Evaluating The Variable Stride Algorithm In The Identification Of Diabetic Retinopathy, Ying Zheng, Brian Danaher, Matthew Brown
Evaluating The Variable Stride Algorithm In The Identification Of Diabetic Retinopathy, Ying Zheng, Brian Danaher, Matthew Brown
Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal
An experiment was performed to investigate a modified pooling method for use in convolutional neural networks for image recognition. This algorithm–Variable Stride–allows the user to segment an image and change the amount of subsampling in each region. This control allows for the user to maintain a higher amount of data retention in more important regions of the image, while more aggressively subsampling the less important regions to increase training speed. Three Variable Stride methods were compared to the preexisting pooling algorithms, Maximum Pool and Average Pool, in three different network configurations tasked with classifying Diabetic Retinopathy images between its early …

Machine Learning Faculty Publications
This paper addresses the mobility problem in massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, which leads to significant performance losses in the practical deployment of the fifth generation mobile communication networks. We propose a novel channel prediction method based on multi-dimensional matrix pencil (MDMP), which estimates the path parameters by exploiting the angular-frequency-domain and angular-timedomain structures of the wideband channel. The MDMP method also entails a novel path pairing scheme to pair the delay and Doppler, based on the super-resolution property of the angle estimation. Our method is able to deal with the realistic constraint of time-varying path delays introduced by user movements, …

Radiological imaging techniques, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), are the standard-of-care non-invasive diagnostic approaches widely applied in neuro-oncology. Unfortunately, accurate interpretation of radiological imaging data is constantly challenged by the indistinguishable radiological image features shared by different pathological changes associated with tumor progression and/or various therapeutic interventions. In recent years, machine learning (ML)-based artificial intelligence (AI) technology has been widely applied in medical image processing and bioinformatics due to its advantages in implicit image feature extraction and integrative data analysis. Despite its recent rapid development, ML technology still faces many hurdles for its broader applications …

Dissertations
Large-scale collection of pedestrian facility (crosswalks, sidewalks, etc.) presence data is vital to the success of efforts to improve pedestrian facility management, safety analysis, and road network planning. However, this kind of data is typically not available on a large scale due to the high labor and time costs that are the result of relying on manual data collection methods. Therefore, methods for automating this process using techniques such as machine learning are currently being explored by researchers. In our work, we mainly focus on machine learning methods for the detection of crosswalks and sidewalks from both aerial and street-view …

Data-Driven Research On Engineering Design Thinking And Behaviors In Computer-Aided Systems Design: Analysis, Modeling, And Prediction, Molla Hafizur Rahman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research on design thinking and design decision-making is vital for discovering and utilizing beneficial design patterns, strategies, and heuristics of human designers in solving engineering design problems. It is also essential for the development of new algorithms embedded with human intelligence and can facilitate human-computer interactions. However, modeling design thinking is challenging because it takes place in the designer’s mind, which is intricate, implicit, and tacit. For an in-depth understanding of design thinking, fine-grained design behavioral data are important because they are the critical link in studying the relationship between design thinking, design decisions, design actions, and design performance. Therefore, …

Deep Active Genetic Learning With Evidential Uncertainty For Agriculture Crops And Lake Water Quality Assessment, Oguz M. Aranay
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Despite significant advancements in the field of machine learning, there are two issues that still require further exploration. First, how to learn from a small dataset; and second, how to select appropriate features from the data. Although there exist many techniques to address these issues, choosing a combination of the techniques from these two groups is challenging, and worth investigating. To address these concerns, this thesis presents a learning framework that is based on a deep learning model utilizing active learning (with evidential uncertainty as a basis for acquisition function) for the first issue and a genetic algorithm for the …

Towards Making Transformer-Based Language Models Learn How Children Learn, Yousra Mahdy
Towards Making Transformer-Based Language Models Learn How Children Learn, Yousra Mahdy
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Transformer-based Language Models (LMs), learn contextual meanings for words using a huge amount of unlabeled text data. These models show outstanding performance on various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. However, what the LMs learn is far from what the meaning is for humans, partly due to the fact that humans can differentiate between concrete and abstract words, but language models make no distinction. Concrete words are words that have a physical representation in the world such as “chair”, while abstract words are ideas such as “democracy”. The process of learning word meanings starts from early childhood when children acquire their …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Processing visual data on mobile devices has many applications, e.g., emergency response and tracking. State-of-the-art computer vision techniques rely on large Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) that are usually too power-hungry to be deployed on resource-constrained edge devices. Many techniques improve DNN efficiency of DNNs by compromising accuracy. However, the accuracy and efficiency of these techniques cannot be adapted for diverse edge applications with different hardware constraints and accuracy requirements. This paper demonstrates that a recent, efficient tree-based DNN architecture, called the hierarchical DNN, can be converted into a Directed Acyclic Graph-based (DAG) architecture to provide tunable accuracy-efficiency tradeoff options. We …

In recent years, deep learning has grown rapidly, and it has been creatively implemented for various applications. In 2019, deep learning based EdgeConnect image inpainting algorithm came out and occupied a place in the image inpainting field. Unlike traditional image inpainting methods which mainly read and use the color information of the remaining part of the image to fill the missing regions of the image, EdgeConnect uses the innovative edge-first and color-next approach. It uses an edge detector to generate an edge map of an image with missing regions, then the missing edges are completed by an edge model, finally …
Distributed Learning With Automated Stepsizes, Benjamin Liggett
Distributed Learning With Automated Stepsizes, Benjamin Liggett
All Theses
Stepsizes for optimization problems play a crucial role in algorithm convergence, where the stepsize must undergo tedious manual tuning to obtain near-optimal convergence. Recently, an adaptive method for automating stepsizes was proposed for centralized optimization. However, this method is not directly applicable to decentralized optimization because it allows for heterogeneous agent stepsizes. Furthermore, directly using consensus between agent stepsizes to mitigate stepsize heterogeneity can decrease performance and even lead to divergence.
This thesis proposes an algorithm to remedy the tedious manual tuning of stepsizes in decentralized optimization. Our proposed algorithm automates the stepsize and uses dynamic consensus between agents’ stepsizes …

In this paper, we are concerned with the automated exchange of orders between logistics companies in a marketplace platform to optimize total revenues. We introduce a novel multi-agent approach to this problem, focusing on the Collaborative Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) through the lens of individual rationality. Our proposed algorithm applies the principles of Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) to pairs of vehicles from different logistics companies, optimizing the overall routes while considering standard VRP constraints plus individual rationality constraints. By facilitating cooperation among competing logistics agents through a Give-and-Take approach, we show that it is possible to reduce travel distance and …

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have been widely adopted, yet DNN models are surprisingly unreliable, which raises significant concerns about their use in critical domains. In this work, we propose that runtime DNN mistakes can be quickly detected and properly dealt with in deployment, especially in settings like self-driving vehicles. Just as software engineering (SE) community has developed effective mechanisms and techniques to monitor and check programmed components, our previous work, SelfChecker, is designed to monitor and correct DNN predictions given unintended abnormal test data. SelfChecker triggers an alarm if the decisions given by the internal layer features of the model …

Increasing maritime trade often results in congestion in busy ports, thereby necessitating planning methods to avoid close quarter risky situations among vessels. Rapid digitization and automation of port operations and vessel navigation provide unique opportunities for significantly improving navigation safety. Our key contributions are as follows. First, given a set of future candidate trajectories for vessels in a traffic hotspot zone, we develop a multiagent trajectory optimization method to choose trajectories that result in the best overall close quarter risk reduction. Our novel MILP-based optimization method is more than an order-of-magnitude faster than a standard MILP for this problem, and …

Crosscbr: Cross‑View Contrastive Learning For Bundle Recommendation, Yunshan Ma, Yingzhi He, An Zhang, Xiang Wang, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Bundle recommendation aims to recommend a bundle of related items to users, which can satisfy the users' various needs with one-stop convenience. Recent methods usually take advantage of both user-bundle and user-item interactions information to obtain informative representations for users and bundles, corresponding to bundle view and item view, respectively. However, they either use a unified view without differentiation or loosely combine the predictions of two separate views, while the crucial cooperative association between the two views' representations is overlooked. In this work, we propose to model the cooperative association between the two different views through cross-view contrastive learning. By encouraging …

Identifying genes involved in disease pathology has been a goal of genomic research since the early days of the field. However, as technology improves and the body of research grows, we are faced with more questions than answers. Among these is the pressing matter of our incomplete understanding of the genetic underpinnings of complex diseases. Many hypotheses offer explanations as to why direct and independent analyses of variants, as done in genome-wide association studies (GWAS), may not fully elucidate disease genetics. These range from pointing out flaws in statistical testing to invoking the complex dynamics of epigenetic processes. In the …
Unsupervised Contrastive Representation Learning For Knowledge Distillation And Clustering, Fei Ding
Unsupervised Contrastive Representation Learning For Knowledge Distillation And Clustering, Fei Ding
All Dissertations
Unsupervised contrastive learning has emerged as an important training strategy to learn representation by pulling positive samples closer and pushing negative samples apart in low-dimensional latent space. Usually, positive samples are the augmented versions of the same input and negative samples are from different inputs. Once the low-dimensional representations are learned, further analysis, such as clustering, and classification can be performed using the representations. Currently, there are two challenges in this framework. First, the empirical studies reveal that even though contrastive learning methods show great progress in representation learning on large model training, they do not work well for small …

Reduced Fuel Emissions Through Connected Vehicles And Truck Platooning, Paul D. Brummitt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication enable the sharing, in real time, of vehicular locations and speeds with other vehicles, traffic signals, and traffic control centers. This shared information can help traffic to better traverse intersections, road segments, and congested neighborhoods, thereby reducing travel times, increasing driver safety, generating data for traffic planning, and reducing vehicular pollution. This study, which focuses on vehicular pollution, used an analysis of data from NREL, BTS, and the EPA to determine that the widespread use of V2V-based truck platooning—the convoying of trucks in close proximity to one another so as to reduce air drag …
Joint Chance-Constrained Staffing Optimization In Multi-Skill Call Centers, Tien Thanh Dam, Thuy Anh Ta, Tien Mai
Joint Chance-Constrained Staffing Optimization In Multi-Skill Call Centers, Tien Thanh Dam, Thuy Anh Ta, Tien Mai
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper concerns the staffing optimization problem in multi-skill call centers. The objective is to find a minimal cost staffing solution while meeting a target level for the quality of service (QoS) to customers. We consider a staffing problem in which joint chance constraints are imposed on the QoS of the day. Our joint chance-constrained formulation is more rational capturing the correlation between different call types, as compared to separate chance-constrained versions considered in previous studies. We show that, in general, the probability functions in the joint-chance constraints display S-shaped curves, and the optimal solutions should belong to the concave …

Evaluation Of Generative Models For Predicting Microstructure Geometries In Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing, Andy Ramlatchan
Evaluation Of Generative Models For Predicting Microstructure Geometries In Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing, Andy Ramlatchan
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
In-situ process monitoring for metals additive manufacturing is paramount to the successful build of an object for application in extreme or high stress environments. In selective laser melting additive manufacturing, the process by which a laser melts metal powder during the build will dictate the internal microstructure of that object once the metal cools and solidifies. The difficulty lies in that obtaining enough variety of data to quantify the internal microstructures for the evaluation of its physical properties is problematic, as the laser passes at high speeds over powder grains at a micrometer scale. Imaging the process in-situ is complex …
Using Ensemble Learning Techniques To Solve The Blind Drift Calibration Problem, Devin Scott Drake
Using Ensemble Learning Techniques To Solve The Blind Drift Calibration Problem, Devin Scott Drake
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Large sets of sensors deployed in nearly every practical environment are prone to drifting out of calibration. This drift can be sensor-based, with one or several sensors falling out of calibration, or system-wide, with changes to the physical system causing sensor-reading issues. Recalibrating sensors in either case can be both time and cost prohibitive. Ideally, some technique could be employed between the sensors and the final reading that recovers the drift-free sensor readings. This paper covers the employment of two ensemble learning techniques — stacking and bootstrap aggregation (or bagging) — to recover drift-free sensor readings from a suite of …
