Predictive Insights For Improving The Resilience Of Global Food Security Using Artificial Intelligence, Meng Leong How, Yong Jiet Chan, Sin Mei Cheah
Predictive Insights For Improving The Resilience Of Global Food Security Using Artificial Intelligence, Meng Leong How, Yong Jiet Chan, Sin Mei Cheah
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Unabated pressures on food systems affect food security on a global scale. A human-centric artificial intelligence-based probabilistic approach is used in this paper to perform a unified analysis of data from the Global Food Security Index (GFSI). The significance of this intuitive probabilistic reasoning approach for predictive forecasting lies in its simplicity and user-friendliness to people who may not be trained in classical computer science or in software programming. In this approach, predictive modeling using a counterfactual probabilistic reasoning analysis of the GFSI dataset can be utilized to reveal the interplay and tensions between the variables that underlie food affordability, …
A Multicut Outer-Approximation Approach For Competitive Facility Location Under Random Utilities, Tien Mai, Andrea Lodi
A Multicut Outer-Approximation Approach For Competitive Facility Location Under Random Utilities, Tien Mai, Andrea Lodi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This work concerns the maximum capture facility location problem with random utilities, i.e., the problem of seeking to locate new facilities in a competitive market such that the captured demand of users is maximized, assuming that each individual chooses among all available facilities according to a random utility maximization model. The main challenge lies in the nonlinearity of the objective function. Motivated by the convexity and separable structure of such an objective function, we propose an enhanced implementation of the outer approximation scheme. Our algorithm works in a cutting plane fashion and allows to separate the objective function into a …

Off-Policy Reinforcement Learning For Efficient And Effective Gan Architecture Search, Tian Yuan, Wang Qin, Zhiwu Huang, Wen Li, Dengxin Dai, Minghao Yang, Jun Wang, Olga Fink
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we introduce a new reinforcement learning (RL) based neural architecture search (NAS) methodology for effective and efficient generative adversarial network (GAN) architecture search. The key idea is to formulate the GAN architecture search problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) for smoother architecture sampling, which enables a more effective RL-based search algorithm by targeting the potential global optimal architecture. To improve efficiency, we exploit an off-policy GAN architecture search algorithm that makes efficient use of the samples generated by previous policies. Evaluation on two standard benchmark datasets (i.e., CIFAR-10 and STL-10) demonstrates that the proposed method is …

Feature interactions across space and scales underpin modern visual recognition systems because they introduce beneficial visual contexts. Conventionally, spatial contexts are passively hidden in the CNN’s increasing receptive fields or actively encoded by non-local convolution. Yet, the non-local spatial interactions are not across scales, and thus they fail to capture the non-local contexts of objects (or parts) residing in different scales. To this end, we propose a fully active feature interaction across both space and scales, called Feature Pyramid Transformer (FPT). It transforms any feature pyramid into another feature pyramid of the same size but with richer contexts, by using …

An Ensemble Of Epoch-Wise Empirical Bayes For Few-Shot Learning, Yaoyao Liu, Bernt Schiele, Qianru Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Few-shot learning aims to train efficient predictive models with a few examples. The lack of training data leads to poor models that perform high-variance or low-confidence predictions. In this paper, we propose to meta-learn the ensemble of epoch-wise empirical Bayes models (E3BM) to achieve robust predictions. “Epoch-wise'' means that each training epoch has a Bayes model whose parameters are specifically learned and deployed. ”Empirical'' means that the hyperparameters, e.g., used for learning and ensembling the epoch-wise models, are generated by hyperprior learners conditional on task-specific data. We introduce four kinds of hyperprior learners by considering inductive vs. transductive, and epoch-dependent …

An Attention-Based Rumor Detection Model With Tree-Structured Recursive Neural Networks, Jing Ma, Wei Gao, Shafiq Joty, Kam-Fai Wong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Rumor spread in social media severely jeopardizes the credibility of online content. Thus, automatic debunking of rumors is of great importance to keep social media a healthy environment. While facing a dubious claim, people often dispute its truthfulness sporadically in their posts containing various cues, which can form useful evidence with long-distance dependencies. In this work, we propose to learn discriminative features from microblog posts by following their non-sequential propagation structure and generate more powerful representations for identifying rumors. For modeling non-sequential structure, we first represent the diffusion of microblog posts with propagation trees, which provide valuable clues on how …

Intersentiment: Combining Deep Neural Models On Interaction And Sentiment For Review Rating Prediction, Shi Feng, Kaisong Song, Daling Wang, Wei Gao, Yifei Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Review rating prediction is commonly approached from the perspective of either Collaborative Filtering (CF) or Sentiment Classification (SC). CF-based approach usually resorts to matrix factorization based on user–item interaction, and does not fully utilize the valuable review text features. In contrast, SC-based approach is focused on mining review content, but can just incorporate some user- and product-level features, and fails to capture sufficient interactions between them represented typically in a sparse matrix as CF can do. In this paper, we propose a novel, extensible review rating prediction model called InterSentiment by bridging the user-product interaction model and the sentiment model …

Commanding And Re-Dictation: Developing Eyes-Free Voice-Based Interaction For Editing Dictated Text, Debjyoti Ghosh, Can Liu, Shengdong Zhao, Kotaro Hara
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Existing voice-based interfaces have limited support for text editing, especially when seeing the text is difficult, e.g., while walking or cooking. This research develops voice interaction techniques for eyes-free text editing. First, with a Wizard-of-Oz study, we identified two primary user strategies: using commands, e.g., “replace go with goes” and re-dictating over an erroneous portion, e.g., correcting “he go there” by saying “he goes there.” To support these user strategies with an actual system implementation, we developed two eyes-free voice interaction techniques, Commanding and Re-dictation, and evaluated them with a controlled experiment. Results showed that while Re-dictation performs significantly better …

An Analysis Of Sketched Irls For Accelerated Sparse Residual Regression, Daichi Iwata, Michael Waechter, Wen-Yan Lin, Yasuyuki Matsushita
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper studies the problem of sparse residual regression, i.e., learning a linear model using a norm that favors solutions in which the residuals are sparsely distributed. This is a common problem in a wide range of computer vision applications where a linear system has a lot more equations than unknowns and we wish to find the maximum feasible set of equations by discarding unreliable ones. We show that one of the most popular solution methods, iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS), can be significantly accelerated by the use of matrix sketching. We analyze the convergence behavior of the proposed method …

We study whether humans or machine learning (ML) classification models are better at classifying scientific research abstracts according to a fixed set of discipline groups. We recruit both undergraduate and postgraduate assistants for this task in separate stages, and compare their performance against the support vectors machine ML algorithm at classifying European Research Council Starting Grant project abstracts to their actual evaluation panels, which are organised by discipline groups. On average, ML is more accurate than human classifiers, across a variety of training and test datasets, and across evaluation panels. ML classifiers trained on different training sets are also more …

Skin-Mimo: Vibration-Based Mimo Communication Over Human Skin, Dong Ma, Yuezhong Wu, Ming Ding, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We explore the feasibility of Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication through vibrations over human skin. Using off-the-shelf motors and piezo transducers as vibration transmitters and receivers, respectively, we build a 2x2 MIMO testbed to collect and analyze vibration signals from real subjects. Our analysis reveals that there exist multiple independent vibration channels between a pair of transmitter and receiver, confirming the feasibility of MIMO. Unfortunately, the slow ramping of mechanical motors and rapidly changing skin channels make it impractical for conventional channel sounding based channel state information (CSI) acquisition, which is critical for achieving MIMO capacity gains. To solve this problem, we …

Cross-docking is considered as a method to manage and control the inventory flow, which is essential in the context of supply chain management. This paper studies the integration of the vehicle routing problem with cross-docking, namely VRPCD which has been extensively studied due to its ability to reducethe overall costs occurring in a supply chain network. Given a fleet of homogeneous vehicles for delivering a single type of product from suppliers to customers through a cross-dock facility, the objective of VRPCD is to determine the number of vehicles used and the corresponding vehicle routes, such that the vehicleoperational and transportation …
Query Graph Generation For Answering Multi-Hop Complex Questions From Knowledge Bases, Yunshi Lan, Jing Jiang
Query Graph Generation For Answering Multi-Hop Complex Questions From Knowledge Bases, Yunshi Lan, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Previous work on answering complex questions from knowledge bases usually separately addresses two types of complexity: questions with constraints and questions with multiple hops of relations. In this paper, we handle both types of complexity at the same time. Motivated by the observation that early incorporation of constraints into query graphs can more effectively prune the search space, we propose a modified staged query graph generation method with more flexible ways to generate query graphs. Our experiments clearly show that our method achieves the state of the art on three benchmark KBQA datasets.

Trajectory Similarity Learning With Auxiliary Supervision And Optimal Matching, Hanyuan Zhang, Xingyu Zhang, Qize Jiang, Baihua Zheng, Zhenbang Sun, Weiwei Sun, Changhu Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Trajectory similarity computation is a core problem in the field of trajectory data queries. However, the high time complexity of calculating the trajectory similarity has always been a bottleneck in real-world applications. Learning-based methods can map trajectories into a uniform embedding space to calculate the similarity of two trajectories with embeddings in constant time. In this paper, we propose a novel trajectory representation learning framework Traj2SimVec that performs scalable and robust trajectory similarity computation. We use a simple and fast trajectory simplification and indexing approach to obtain triplet training samples efficiently. We make the framework more robust via taking full …

Video-Grounded Dialogues With Pretrained Generation Language Models, Hung Le, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Pre-trained language models have shown remarkable success in improving various downstream NLP tasks due to their ability to capture dependencies in textual data and generate natural responses. In this paper, we leverage the power of pre-trained language models for improving video-grounded dialogue, which is very challenging and involves complex features of different dynamics: (1) Video features which can extend across both spatial and temporal dimensions; and (2) Dialogue features which involve semantic dependencies over multiple dialogue turns. We propose a framework by extending GPT-2 models to tackle these challenges by formulating video-grounded dialogue tasks as a sequence-to-sequence task, combining both …

Efficient sequential matching of supply and demand is a problem of interest in many online to offline services. For instance, Uber, Lyft, Grab for matching taxis to customers; Ubereats, Deliveroo, FoodPanda etc. for matching restaurants to customers. In these systems, a centralized entity (e.g., Uber) aggregates supply and assigns them to demand so as to optimize a central metric such as profit, number of requests, delay etc. However, individuals (e.g., drivers, delivery boys) in the system are self interested and they try to maximize their own long term profit. The central entity has the full view of the system and …

The rapid growth of cities in developing world coupled with the increase in rural to urban migration have led to cities being identified as the key actor for any nation's economy. Shared mobility has become an integral part of life of people in cities as it improves efficiency and enhances transportation accessibility. As a result, the mismatch between the demand and supply of shared mobility resources has a direct impact on people's life. Thus, the goal of my dissertation is to develop solution strategies for these real-time (online) spatio-temporal demand supply matching problems for shared mobility resources which can enhance …

The rise of fake news has resulted in a wide discrepancy between the attention given to the scientific understanding of an issue versus misinformed and sometimes purposefully disinformed claims (false information that is purposely spread to deceive people) coming from outside the scientific community. One such example relates to climate change, where a nature study shows that climate change contrarians are featured in 49% more media articles than scientists, despite the overwhelming consensus in the scientific community over the significance of anthropogenic climate change. In addition, many companies worldwide make inaccurate and often misleading claims about their environmental and social …

With the growing number of deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure for a wide variety of applications, the battery maintenance has become a major limitation for the sustainability of such infrastructure. To overcome this problem, energy harvesting offers a viable alternative to autonomously power IoT devices, resulting in a number of battery-less energy harvesting IoTs (or EH-IoTs) appearing in the market in recent years. Standards activities are also underway, which involve wireless protocol design suitable for EH-IoTs as well as testing procedures for various energy harvesting methods. Despite the early commercial and standards activities, IoT sensing, computing and communications …

Depression is among the most prevalent mental disorders, affecting millions of people of all ages globally. Machine learning techniques have shown effective in enabling automated detection and prediction of depression for early intervention and treatment. However, they are challenged by the relative scarcity of instances of depression in the data. In this work we introduce a novel deep multi-task recurrent neural network to tackle this challenge, in which depression classification is jointly optimized with two auxiliary tasks, namely one-class metric learning and anomaly ranking. The auxiliary tasks introduce an inductive bias that improves the classification model’s generalizability on small depression …

Motivation: Identification of virulence factors (VFs) is critical to the elucidation of bacterial pathogenesis and prevention of related infectious diseases. Current computational methods for VF prediction focus on binary classification or involve only several class(es) of VFs with sufficient samples. However, thousands of VF classes are present in real-world scenarios, and many of them only have a very limited number of samples available. Results: We first construct a large VF dataset, covering 3446 VF classes with 160 495 sequences, and then propose deep convolutional neural network models for VF classification. We show that (i) for common VF classes with sufficient samples, …

We present a novel unsupervised feature representation learning method, Visual Commonsense Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (VC R-CNN), to serve as an improved visual region encoder for high-level tasks such as captioning and VQA. Given a set of detected object regions in an image (e.g., using Faster R-CNN), like any other unsupervised feature learning methods (e.g., word2vec), the proxy training objective of VC R-CNN is to predict the contextual objects of a region. However, they are fundamentally different: the prediction of VC R-CNN is by using causal intervention: P(Y|do(X)), while others are by using the conventional likelihood: P(Y|X). This is also …

Fashion trend forecasting is a crucial task for both academia andindustry. Although some efforts have been devoted to tackling this challenging task, they only studied limited fashion elements with highly seasonal or simple patterns, which could hardly reveal thereal fashion trends. Towards insightful fashion trend forecasting, this work focuses on investigating fine-grained fashion element trends for specific user groups. We first contribute a large-scale fashion trend dataset (FIT) collected from Instagram with extracted time series fashion element records and user information. Furthermore, to effectively model the time series data of fashion elements with rather complex patterns, we propose a Knowledge Enhanced …

Target-level sentiment classification aims at assigning sentiment polarities to opinion targets in a sentence, for which it is significantly more challenging to obtain large-scale labeled data than sentence/document-level sentiment classification due to the intricate contexts and relations of the target words. To address this challenge, we propose a novel semi-supervised approach to learn sentiment-aware representations from easily accessible unlabeled data specifically for the finegrained sentiment learning. This is very different from current popular semi-supervised solutions that use the unlabeled data via pretraining to generate generic representations for various types of downstream tasks. Particularly, we show for the first time that …
