The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has brought numerous benefits, such as improved efficiency, smart analytics, and increased automation. However, it also exposes connected devices, users, applications, and data generated to cyber security threats that need to be addressed. This work investigates hybrid cyber threats (HCTs), which are now working on an entirely new level with the increasingly adopted IIoT. This work focuses on emerging methods to model, detect, and defend against hybrid cyber attacks using machine learning (ML) techniques. Specifically, a novel ML-based HCT modelling and analysis framework was proposed, in which regularisation and Random Forest …

Acquiring the necessary skills to perform a work effectively and efficiently requires a significant investment of time and computing power. Previous applications of Reinforcement Learning (RL) for action optimization in humanoid robotics have shown how promising this technology is for moving robotics towards true autonomy and versatility. Therefore, this study offers the first use of RL to create an entirely optimal kicking action for the Alderbaran Nao robot. Kicking motions that were steady, precise, quick, and able to kick farther than any existing RoboCup squad were generated by optimizing for a multi-objective reward function. We demonstrate that the ideal kicking …

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a commonly encountered diagnosis at pediatric urgent care (UC) centers. The urinalysis (UA) is usually the initial study in UC settings used to guide decisions regarding initiating empiric antibiotics and/or pursuing urine culture. However, studies in pediatric UC settings examining the ideal threshold for a positive result are lacking.
Methods: UA result data were extracted from the records of 6,327 pediatric patients, which were collected as part of a previous QI project. Logistic regression was used to determine the predictors of positive urine cultures. Decision trees for a positive UA result for both clean …

Sparse Representer Theorems For Learning In Reproducing Kernel Banach Spaces, Rui Wang, Yuesheng Xu, Mingsong Yan
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Sparsity of a learning solution is a desirable feature in machine learning. Certain reproducing kernel Banach spaces (RKBSs) are appropriate hypothesis spaces for sparse learning methods. The goal of this paper is to understand what kind of RKBSs can promote sparsity for learning solutions. We consider two typical learning models in an RKBS: the minimum norm interpolation (MNI) problem and the regularization problem. We first establish an explicit representer theorem for solutions of these problems, which represents the extreme points of the solution set by a linear combination of the extreme points of the subdifferential set, of the norm function, …

One of the major neuropathological consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), which requires swift diagnosis to avert perilous outcomes. We present a new automatic hemorrhage segmentation technique via curriculum-based semi-supervised learning. It employs a pre-trained lightweight encoder-decoder framework (MobileNetV2) on labeled and unlabeled data. The model integrates consistency regularization for improved generalization, offering steady predictions from original and augmented versions of unlabeled data. The training procedure employs curriculum learning to progressively train the model at diverse complexity levels. We utilize the PhysioNet dataset to train and evaluate the proposed approach. The performance results surpass those of …

Addressing Spectral Bias Of Deep Neural Networks By Multi-Grade Deep Learning, Ronglong Fang, Yuesheng Xu
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Deep neural networks (DNNs) have showcased their remarkable precision in approximating smooth functions. However, they suffer from the spectral bias, wherein DNNs typically exhibit a tendency to prioritize the learning of lower-frequency components of a function, struggling to effectively capture its high-frequency features. This paper is to address this issue. Notice that a function having only low frequency components may be well-represented by a shallow neural network (SNN), a network having only a few layers. By observing that composition of low frequency functions can effectively approximate a high-frequency function, we propose to learn a function containing high-frequency components by composing …
Latent Space Dynamics Learning For Stiff Collisional-Radiative Models, Xuping Xie, Qi Tang, Xianzhu Tang
Latent Space Dynamics Learning For Stiff Collisional-Radiative Models, Xuping Xie, Qi Tang, Xianzhu Tang
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
In this work, we propose a data-driven method to discover the latent space and learn the corresponding latent dynamics for a collisional-radiative (CR) model in radiative plasma simulations. The CR model, consisting of high-dimensional stiff ordinary differential equations, must be solved at each grid point in the configuration space, leading to significant computational costs in plasma simulations. Our method employs a physics-assisted autoencoder to extract a low-dimensional latent representation of the original CR system. A flow map neural network is then used to learn the latent dynamics. Once trained, the reduced surrogate model predicts the entire latent dynamics given only …

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease in the elderly. This disease has no cure, but assessing these motor symptoms will help slow down that progression. Inertial sensing-based wearable devices (ISWDs) such as mobile phones and smartwatches have been widely employed to analyse the condition of PD patients. However, most studies purely focused on a single activity or symptom, which may ignore the correlation between activities and complementary characteristics. In this paper, a novel technical pipeline is proposed for fine-grained classification of PD severity grades, which identify the most representative activities. We also propose a multi-activities combination scheme based …

Learning Optimal Inter-Class Margin Adaptively For Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning Via Neural Collapse-Based Meta-Learning, Hang Ran, Weijun Li, Lusi Li, Songsong Tian, Xin Ning, Prayag Tiwari
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning (FSCIL) aims to learn new classes incrementally with a limited number of samples per class. It faces issues of forgetting previously learned classes and overfitting on few-shot classes. An efficient strategy is to learn features that are discriminative in both base and incremental sessions. Current methods improve discriminability by manually designing inter-class margins based on empirical observations, which can be suboptimal. The emerging Neural Collapse (NC) theory provides a theoretically optimal inter-class margin for classification, serving as a basis for adaptively computing the margin. Yet, it is designed for closed, balanced data, not for sequential or few-shot …

Deep neural networks (DNNs) excel at learning from static datasets but struggle with continual learning, where data arrives sequentially. Catastrophic forgetting, the phenomenon of forgetting previously learned knowledge, is a primary challenge. This paper introduces EXponentially Averaged Class-wise Feature Significance (EXACFS) to mitigate this issue in the class incremental learning (CIL) setting. By estimating the significance of model features for each learned class using loss gradients, gradually aging the significance through the incremental tasks and preserving the significant features through a distillation loss, EXACFS effectively balances remembering old knowledge (stability) and learning new knowledge (plasticity). Extensive experiments on CIFAR-100 and …

Zero-shot 3D shape understanding aims to recognize “unseen” 3D categories that are not present in training data. Recently, Contrastive Language–Image Pre-training (CLIP) has shown promising open-world performance in zero-shot 3D shape understanding tasks by information fusion among language and 3D modality. It first renders 3D objects into multiple 2D image views and then learns to understand the semantic relationships between the textual descriptions and images, enabling the model to generalize to new and unseen categories. However, existing studies in zero-shot 3D shape understanding rely on predefined rendering parameters, resulting in repetitive, redundant, and low-quality views. This limitation hinders the model’s …
