Deep Learning On Graphs Using Graph Convolutional Networks, Saurabh Mithe
Deep Learning On Graphs Using Graph Convolutional Networks, Saurabh Mithe
Master's Projects
Graphs are a powerful way to model network data with the objects as nodes and the relationship between the various objects as links. Such graphs contain a plethora of valuable information about the underlying data which can be extracted, analyzed, and visualized using Machine Learning (ML). The challenge to this task is that graphs are non-Euclidean structures which means that they cannot be directly used with ML techniques because ML techniques only work with Euclidean structures like grids or sequences. In order to overcome this challenge, the graph structure first needs to be encoded into an equivalent Euclidean representation in …

Geometric Problems In Robot Exploration, Wyatt Preston Clements
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Robots are increasingly utilized to perform tasks in today's world. This has varied from vacuuming to building advanced structures. With robots being used for tasks such as these, new challenges are introduced. Problems that have been previously researched to be performed, either theoretically or implemented, need to be redesigned to be able to better handle these challenges. In this thesis, I will discuss multiple problems that have previously been researched and I have redesigned to be possible to be implemented by robots or that I have developed a new way for the robots to solve the problem. I focus on …

SMU Data Science Review
Planet identification has typically been a tasked performed exclusively by teams of astronomers and astrophysicists using methods and tools accessible only to those with years of academic education and training. NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration program has introduced modern satellites capable of capturing a vast array of data regarding celestial objects of interest to assist with researching these objects. The availability of satellite data has opened up the task of planet identification to individuals capable of writing and interpreting machine learning models. In this study, several classification models and datasets are utilized to assign a probability of an observation being an exoplanet. …
Clustering Of Multiple Instance Data., Andrew D. Karem
Clustering Of Multiple Instance Data., Andrew D. Karem
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An emergent area of research in machine learning that aims to develop tools to analyze data where objects have multiple representations is Multiple Instance Learning (MIL). In MIL, each object is represented by a bag that includes a collection of feature vectors called instances. A bag is positive if it contains at least one positive instance, and negative if no instances are positive. One of the main objectives in MIL is to identify a region in the instance feature space with high correlation to instances from positive bags and low correlation to instances from negative bags -- this region is …

The Challenges Of Creating Engaging Content: Results From A Focus Group Study Of A Popular News Media Organization, Kholoud Khalil Aldous, Jisun An, Bernard J. Jansen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The process of content creation for distribution via social media platforms is not a trivial one for social media editors as the goal of creating both serious and engaging content is challenging, with no clear or differing guidelines or rules across and between platforms. For creators of serious content, such as news organizations, advertisers, or educational institutions, engagement has a deeper meaning beyond likes, shares, etc. that is aimed at the audience actually processing the underlying content associated with a social media post. In this research, we report findings from a group study that aimed to understand the process and …

The lack of transparency surrounding cloud service provision makes it difficult for consumers to make knowledge based purchasing decisions. As a result, consumer trust has become a major impediment to cloud computing adoption. Cloud Trust Labels represent a means of communicating relevant service and security information to potential customers on the cloud service provided, thereby facilitating informed decision making. This research investigates the potential of a Cloud Trust Label system to overcome the trust barrier. Specifically, it examines the impact of a Cloud Trust Label on consumer perceptions of a service and cloud service provider trustworthiness and trust in the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper focuses on a recent variant of the Orienteering Problem (OP), namely the Capacitated Team OP (CTOP) which arises in the logistics industry. In this problem, each node is associated with a demand that needs to be satisfied and a score that need to be collected. Given a set of homogeneous fleet of vehicles, the objective is to find a path for each vehicle in order to maximize the total collected score, without violating the capacity and time budget. We propose an Iterated Local Search (ILS) algorithm for solving the CTOP. Two strategies, either accepting a new solution as …

Distributed Gibbs: A Linear-Space Sampling-Based Dcop Algorithm, Duc Thien Nguyen, William Yeoh, Hoong Chuin Lau, Roie Zivan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Researchers have used distributed constraint optimization problems (DCOPs) to model various multi-agent coordination and resource allocation problems. Very recently, Ottens et al. proposed a promising new approach to solve DCOPs that is based on confidence bounds via their Distributed UCT (DUCT) sampling-based algorithm. Unfortunately, its memory requirement per agent is exponential in the number of agents in the problem, which prohibits it from scaling up to large problems. Thus, in this article, we introduce two new sampling-based DCOP algorithms called Sequential Distributed Gibbs (SD-Gibbs) and Parallel Distributed Gibbs (PD-Gibbs). Both algorithms have memory requirements per agent that is linear in …
Dish: Democracy In State Houses, Nicholas A. Russo
Dish: Democracy In State Houses, Nicholas A. Russo
Master's Theses
In our current political climate, state level legislators have become increasingly impor- tant. Due to cuts in funding and growing focus at the national level, public oversight for these legislators has drastically decreased. This makes it difficult for citizens and activists to understand the relationships and commonalities between legislators. This thesis provides three contributions to address this issue. First, we created a data set containing over 1200 features focused on a legislator’s activity on bills. Second, we created embeddings that represented a legislator’s level of activity and engagement for a given bill using a custom model called Democracy2Vec. Third, we …

Improving Vix Futures Forecasts Using Machine Learning Methods, James Hosker, Slobodan Djurdjevic, Hieu Nguyen, Robert Slater
SMU Data Science Review
The problem of forecasting market volatility is a difficult task for most fund managers. Volatility forecasts are used for risk management, alpha (risk) trading, and the reduction of trading friction. Improving the forecasts of future market volatility assists fund managers in adding or reducing risk in their portfolios as well as in increasing hedges to protect their portfolios in anticipation of a market sell-off event. Our analysis compares three existing financial models that forecast future market volatility using the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index (VIX) to six machine/deep learning supervised regression methods. This analysis determines which models provide best …

A Comparative Evaluation Of Recommender Systems For Hotel Reviews, Ryan Khaleghi, Kevin Cannon, Raghuram Srinivas
SMU Data Science Review
There has been increasing growth in deployment of recommender systems across Internet sites, with various models being used. These systems have been particularly valuable for review sites, as they seek to add value to the user experience to gain market share and to create new revenue streams through deals. Hotels are a prime target for this effort, as there is a large number for most destinations and a lot of differentiation between them. In this paper, we present an evaluation of two of the most popular methods for hotel review recommender systems: collaborative filtering and matrix factorization. The accuracy of …
Radically Simplifying Gated Recurrent Architectures Without Loss Of Performance, Jonathan Boardman, Ying Xie
Radically Simplifying Gated Recurrent Architectures Without Loss Of Performance, Jonathan Boardman, Ying Xie
Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates
Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) units are a family of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) architectures that have proven incredibly effective at learning from sequence data. They are also extremely complex, making them expensive to train and difficult to understand. A recent trend towards simplification has produced the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) and the Minimal Gated Unit (MGU), both of which perform as well as the LSTM (or better) on a variety of tasks. The MGU is one of the simplest gated recurrent architectures at the moment. Our study demonstrates that it is possible to radically simplify the MGU without significant loss …

Learning To Map The Visual And Auditory World, Tawfiq Salem
Learning To Map The Visual And Auditory World, Tawfiq Salem
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
The appearance of the world varies dramatically not only from place to place but also from hour to hour and month to month. Billions of images that capture this complex relationship are uploaded to social-media websites every day and often are associated with precise time and location metadata. This rich source of data can be beneficial to improve our understanding of the globe. In this work, we propose a general framework that uses these publicly available images for constructing dense maps of different ground-level attributes from overhead imagery. In particular, we use well-defined probabilistic models and a weakly-supervised, multi-task training …
Transdimensional Transformation Based Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Moumita Das, Sourabh Bhattacharya
Transdimensional Transformation Based Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Moumita Das, Sourabh Bhattacharya
Journal Articles
Variable dimensional problems, where not only the parameters, but also the number of parameters are random variables, pose serious challenge to Bayesians. Although in principle the Reversible Jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo (RJMCMC) methodology is a response to such challenges, the dimension-hopping strategies need not be always convenient for practical implementation, particularly because efficient “move-types” having reasonable acceptance rates are often difficult to devise. In this article, we propose and develop a novel and general dimension-hopping MCMC methodology that can update all the parameters as well as the number of parameters simultaneously using simple deterministic transformations of some low-dimensional (often …
Hedonic Coalition Formation For Task Allocation With Heterogeneous Robots, Emily Czarnecki
Hedonic Coalition Formation For Task Allocation With Heterogeneous Robots, Emily Czarnecki
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tasks in the real world are complex in nature and often require multiple robots to collaborate in order to be accomplished. However, multiple robots with the same set of sensors working together might not be the optimal solution. In many cases a task might require different sensory inputs and outputs. However, allocating a large variety of sensors on each robot is not a cost-effective solution. As such, robots with different attributes must be considered. In this thesis we study the coalition formation problem for task allocation with multiple heterogeneous (equipped with a different set of sensors) robots. The proposed solution …
Distributed Multi-Label Learning On Apache Spark, Jorge Gonzalez Lopez
Distributed Multi-Label Learning On Apache Spark, Jorge Gonzalez Lopez
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis proposes a series of multi-label learning algorithms for classification and feature selection implemented on the Apache Spark distributed computing model. Five approaches for determining the optimal architecture to speed up multi-label learning methods are presented. These approaches range from local parallelization using threads to distributed computing using independent or shared memory spaces. It is shown that the optimal approach performs hundreds of times faster than the baseline method. Three distributed multi-label k nearest neighbors methods built on top of the Spark architecture are proposed: an exact iterative method that computes pair-wise distances, an approximate tree-based method that indexes …

Quantifying Human Biological Age: A Machine Learning Approach, Syed Ashiqur Rahman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Quantifying human biological age is an important and difficult challenge. Different biomarkers and numerous approaches have been studied for biological age prediction, each with its advantages and limitations. In this work, we first introduce a new anthropometric measure (called Surface-based Body Shape Index, SBSI) that accounts for both body shape and body size, and evaluate its performance as a predictor of all-cause mortality. We analyzed data from the National Health and Human Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Based on the analysis, we introduce a new body shape index constructed from four important anthropometric determinants of body shape and body size: body …

Data Center Holistic Demand Response Algorithm To Smooth Microgrid Tie-Line Power Fluctuation, Ting Yang, Yingjie Zhao, Haibo Pen, Zhaoxia Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the rapid development of cloud computing, artificial intelligence technologies and big data applications, data centers have become widely deployed. High density IT equipment in data centers consumes a lot of electrical power, and makes data center a hungry monster of energy consumption. To solve this problem, renewable energy is increasingly integrated into data center power provisioning systems. Compared to the traditional power supply methods, renewable energy has its unique characteristics, such as intermittency and randomness. When renewable energy supplies power to the data center industrial park, this kind of power supply not only has negative effects on the normal …
Sequence Pattern Mining With Variables, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson, Robert F. Mills, Michael R. Grimaila
Sequence Pattern Mining With Variables, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson, Robert F. Mills, Michael R. Grimaila
Faculty Publications
Sequence pattern mining (SPM) seeks to find multiple items that commonly occur together in a specific order. One common assumption is that all of the relevant differences between items are captured through creating distinct items, e.g., if color matters then the same item in two different colors would have two items created, one for each color. In some domains, that is unrealistic. This paper makes two contributions. The first extends SPM algorithms to allow item differentiation through attribute variables for domains with large numbers of items, e.g, by having one item with a variable with a color attribute rather than …
A Multi-Task Approach To Incremental Dialogue State Tracking, Anh Duong Trinh, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher
A Multi-Task Approach To Incremental Dialogue State Tracking, Anh Duong Trinh, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
Incrementality is a fundamental feature of language in real world use. To this point, however, the vast majority of work in automated dialogue processing has focused on language as turn based. In this paper we explore the challenge of incremental dialogue state tracking through the development and analysis of a multi-task approach to incremental dialogue state tracking. We present the design of our incremental dialogue state tracker in detail and provide evaluation against the well known Dialogue State Tracking Challenge 2 (DSTC2) dataset. In addition to a standard evaluation of the tracker, we also provide an analysis of the Incrementality …
Manana: A Generalized Heuristic Scoring Approach For Concept Map Analysis As Applied To Cybersecurity Education, Sharon Elizabeth Blake Gatto
Manana: A Generalized Heuristic Scoring Approach For Concept Map Analysis As Applied To Cybersecurity Education, Sharon Elizabeth Blake Gatto
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Concept Maps (CMs) are considered a well-known pedagogy technique in creating curriculum, educating, teaching, and learning. Determining comprehension of concepts result from comparisons of candidate CMs against a master CM, and evaluate "goodness". Past techniques for comparing CMs have revolved around the creation of a subjective rubric. We propose a novel CM scoring scheme called MAnanA based on a Fuzzy Similarity Scaling (FSS) score to vastly remove the subjectivity of the rubrics in the process of grading a CM. We evaluate our framework against a predefined rubric and test it with CM data collected from the Introduction to …

Online Spatio-Temporal Matching In Stochastic And Dynamic Domains, Meghna Lowalekar, Pradeep Varakantham, Patrick Jaillet
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Online spatio-temporal matching of servers/services to customers is a problem that arises at a large scale in many domains associated with shared transportation (e.g., taxis, ride sharing, super shuttles, etc.) and delivery services (e.g., food, equipment, clothing, home fuel, etc.). A key characteristic of these problems is that the matching of servers/services to customers in one stage has a direct impact on the matching in the next stage. For instance, it is efficient for taxis to pick up customers closer to the drop off point of the customer from the first stage of matching. Traditionally, greedy/myopic approaches have been adopted …

The Price Of Usability: Designing Operationalizable Strategies For Security Games, Sara Marie Mccarthy, Corine M. Laan, Kai Wang, Phebe Vayanos, Arunesh Sinha, Milind Tambe
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We consider the problem of allocating scarce security resources among heterogeneous targets to thwart a possible attack. It is well known that deterministic solutions to this problem being highly predictable are severely suboptimal. To mitigate this predictability, the game-theoretic security game model was proposed which randomizes over pure (deterministic) strategies, causing confusion in the adversary. Unfortunately, such mixed strategies typically involve randomizing over a large number of strategies, requiring security personnel to be familiar with numerous protocols, making them hard to operationalize. Motivated by these practical considerations, we propose an easy to use approach for computing strategies that are easy …
The Effect Of Endgame Tablebases On Modern Chess Engines, Christopher D. Peterson
The Effect Of Endgame Tablebases On Modern Chess Engines, Christopher D. Peterson
Computer Engineering
Modern chess engines have the ability to augment their evaluation by using massive tables containing billions of positions and their memorized solutions. This report examines the importance of these tables to better understand the circumstances under which they should be used. The analysis conducted in this paper empirically examines differences in size and speed of memorized positions and their impacts on engine strength. Using this technique, situations where memorized tables improve play (and situations where they do not) are discovered.

Applications Of Artificial Intelligence In Power Systems, Samin Rastgoufard
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Artificial intelligence tools, which are fast, robust and adaptive can overcome the drawbacks of traditional solutions for several power systems problems. In this work, applications of AI techniques have been studied for solving two important problems in power systems.
The first problem is static security evaluation (SSE). The objective of SSE is to identify the contingencies in planning and operations of power systems. Numerical conventional solutions are time-consuming, computationally expensive, and are not suitable for online applications. SSE may be considered as a binary-classification, multi-classification or regression problem. In this work, multi-support vector machine is combined with several evolutionary computation …

Computer Vision Evidence Supporting Craniometric Alignment Of Rat Brain Atlases To Streamline Expert-Guided, First-Order Migration Of Hypothalamic Spatial Datasets Related To Behavioral Control, Arshad Khan, Jose Perez, Claire Wells, Olac Fuentes
Selected Works Temporary Series
The rat has arguably the most widely studied brain among all animals, with numerous reference atlases for rat brain having been published since 1946. For example, many neuroscientists have used the atlases of Paxinos and Watson (PW, first published in 1982) or Swanson (S, first published in 1992) as guides to probe or map specific rat brain structures and their connections. Despite nearly three decades of contemporaneous publication, no independent attempt has been made to establish a basic framework that allows data mapped in PW to be placed in register with S, or vice versa. Such data migration would allow …

Multi Self-Adapting Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm (Msapso)., Gerhard Koch
Multi Self-Adapting Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm (Msapso)., Gerhard Koch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The performance and stability of the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm depends on parameters that are typically tuned manually or adapted based on knowledge from empirical parameter studies. Such parameter selection is ineffectual when faced with a broad range of problem types, which often hinders the adoption of PSO to real world problems. This dissertation develops a dynamic self-optimization approach for the respective parameters (inertia weight, social and cognition). The effects of self-adaption for the optimal balance between superior performance (convergence) and the robustness (divergence) of the algorithm with regard to both simple and complex benchmark functions is investigated. This work …
