Towards Long-Term Fairness In Sequential Decision Making, Yaowei Hu Dec 2023

Towards Long-Term Fairness In Sequential Decision Making, Yaowei Hu

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the development of artificial intelligence, automated decision-making systems are increasingly integrated into various applications, such as hiring, loans, education, recommendation systems, and more. These machine learning algorithms are expected to facilitate faster, more accurate, and impartial decision-making compared to human judgments. Nevertheless, these expectations are not always met in practice due to biased training data, leading to discriminatory outcomes. In contemporary society, countering discrimination has become a consensus among people, leading the EU and the US to enact laws and regulations that prohibit discrimination based on factors such as gender, age, race, and religion. Consequently, addressing algorithmic discrimination has …

Learning Program Semantics For Vulnerability Detection Via Vulnerability-Specific Inter-Procedural Slicing, Bozhi Wu, Shangqing Liu, Xiao Yang, Zhiming Li, Jun Sun, Shang-Wei Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning-based approaches that learn code representations for software vulnerability detection have been proven to produce inspiring results. However, they still fail to capture complete and precise vulnerability semantics for code representations. To address the limitations, in this work, we propose a learning-based approach namely SnapVuln, which first utilizes multiple vulnerability-specific inter-procedural slicing algorithms to capture vulnerability semantics of various types and then employs a Gated Graph Neural Network (GGNN) with an attention mechanism to learn vulnerability semantics. We compare SnapVuln with state-of-the-art learning-based approaches on two public datasets, and confirm that SnapVuln outperforms them. We further perform an ablation study …

Online Aircraft System Identification Using A Novel Parameter Informed Reinforcement Learning Method, Nathan Schaff Oct 2023

Online Aircraft System Identification Using A Novel Parameter Informed Reinforcement Learning Method, Nathan Schaff

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This thesis presents the development and analysis of a novel method for training reinforcement learning neural networks for online aircraft system identification of multiple similar linear systems, such as all fixed wing aircraft. This approach, termed Parameter Informed Reinforcement Learning (PIRL), dictates that reinforcement learning neural networks should be trained using input and output trajectory/history data as is convention; however, the PIRL method also includes any known and relevant aircraft parameters, such as airspeed, altitude, center of gravity location and/or others. Through this, the PIRL Agent is better suited to identify novel/test-set aircraft.

First, the PIRL method is applied to …

Instance-Specific Algorithm Configuration Via Unsupervised Deep Graph Clustering, Wen Song, Yi Liu, Zhiguang Cao, Yaoxin Wu, Qiqiang Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Instance-specific Algorithm Configuration (AC) methods are effective in automatically generating high-quality algorithm parameters for heterogeneous NP-hard problems from multiple sources. However, existing works rely on manually designed features to describe training instances, which are simple numerical attributes and cannot fully capture structural differences. Targeting at Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) solvers, this paper proposes a novel instances-specific AC method based on end-to-end deep graph clustering. By representing an MIP instance as a bipartite graph, a random walk algorithm is designed to extract raw features with both numerical and structural information from the instance graph. Then an auto-encoder is designed to learn dense …

Multi-Representation Variational Autoencoder Via Iterative Latent Attention And Implicit Differentiation, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Variational Autoencoder (VAE) offers a non-linear probabilistic modeling of user's preferences. While it has achieved remarkable performance at collaborative filtering, it typically samples a single vector for representing user's preferences, which may be insufficient to capture the user's diverse interests. Existing solutions extend VAE to model multiple interests of users by resorting a variant of self-attentive method, i.e., employing prototypes to group items into clusters, each capturing one topic of user's interests. Despite showing improvements, the current design could be more effective since prototypes are randomly initialized and shared across users, resulting in uninformative and non-personalized clusters. To fill the gap, …

Carbon-Aware Mine Planning With A Novel Multi-Objective Framework, Nurul Asyikeen Binte Azhar, Aldy Gunawan, Shih-Fen Cheng, Erwin Leonardi Sep 2023

Carbon-Aware Mine Planning With A Novel Multi-Objective Framework, Nurul Asyikeen Binte Azhar, Aldy Gunawan, Shih-Fen Cheng, Erwin Leonardi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The logistical complication of long-term mine planning involves deciding the sequential extraction of materials from the mine pit and their subsequent processing steps based on geological, geometrical, and resource constraints. The net present value (NPV) of profit over the mine's lifespan usually forms the sole objective for this problem, which is considered as the NP-hard precedence-constrained production scheduling problem (PCPSP) as well. However, increased pressure for more sustainable and carbon-aware industries also calls for environmental indicators to be considered. In this paper, we enhance the generic PCPSP formulation into a multi-objective optimization (MOO) problem whereby carbon cost forms an additional …

Uncertainty-Adjusted Inductive Matrix Completion With Graph Neural Networks, Petr Kasalicky, Antoine Ledent, Rodrigo Alves Sep 2023

Uncertainty-Adjusted Inductive Matrix Completion With Graph Neural Networks, Petr Kasalicky, Antoine Ledent, Rodrigo Alves

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a robust recommender systems model which performs matrix completion and a ratings-wise uncertainty estimation jointly. Whilst the prediction module is purely based on an implicit low-rank assumption imposed via nuclear norm regularization, our loss function is augmented by an uncertainty estimation module which learns an anomaly score for each individual rating via a Graph Neural Network: data points deemed more anomalous by the GNN are downregulated in the loss function used to train the low-rank module. The whole model is trained in an end-to-end fashion, allowing the anomaly detection module to tap on the supervised information available in …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With their flexibility and convenience, taxis play a vital role in urban transportation systems. Understanding how human drivers make decisions in a context of uncertainty and competition is crucial for taxi fleets that depend on drivers to provide their services. As part of this paper, we propose modeling taxi drivers’ behaviors based on behavioral game theory. Based on real-world data, we demonstrate that the behavioral game theory model we select is superior to state-of-the-art baselines. These results provide a solid foundation for improving taxi fleet efficiency in the future.

Learning To Send Reinforcements: Coordinating Multi-Agent Dynamic Police Patrol Dispatching And Rescheduling Via Reinforcement Learning, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau Aug 2023

Learning To Send Reinforcements: Coordinating Multi-Agent Dynamic Police Patrol Dispatching And Rescheduling Via Reinforcement Learning, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address the problem of coordinating multiple agents in a dynamic police patrol scheduling via a Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach. Our approach utilizes Multi-Agent Value Function Approximation (MAVFA) with a rescheduling heuristic to learn dispatching and rescheduling policies jointly. Often, police operations are divided into multiple sectors for more effective and efficient operations. In a dynamic setting, incidents occur throughout the day across different sectors, disrupting initially-planned patrol schedules. To maximize policing effectiveness, police agents from different sectors cooperate by sending reinforcements to support one another in their incident response and even routine patrol. This poses an interesting research challenge …

Document-Level Relation Extraction Via Separate Relation Representation And Logical Reasoning, Heyan Huang, Changsen Yuan, Qian Liu, Yixin Cao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Document-level relation extraction (RE) extends the identification of entity/mentions’ relation from the single sentence to the long document. It is more realistic and poses new challenges to relation representation and reasoning skills. In this article, we propose a novel model, SRLR, using Separate Relation Representation and Logical Reasoning considering the indirect relation representation and complex reasoning of evidence sentence problems. Specifically, we first expand the judgment of relational facts from the entity-level to the mention-level, highlighting fine-grained information to capture the relation representation for the entity pair. Second, we propose a logical reasoning module to identify evidence sentences and conduct …

Balanced Blended Space: Foundational Human–Ai Dialogues In A Symmetry-Based Mediation Framework, David Smith

Publications and Research

This working paper documents the early development of the Balanced Blended Space (BBS) framework through a series of iterative interactions between a cognitive agent (human researcher) and a computational agent (AI system) conducted in 2023. The work is motivated by the need for a universal theoretical model capable of describing the integration of physical, virtual, and conceptual spaces, particularly in response to increasing fragmentation across contemporary communication systems.

BBS is proposed as a symmetry-based mediation framework in which relationships between domains—such as physical and virtual space, cognition and computation, and multiple sensory modalities—are treated as structurally equivalent and mappable. Central …

Structural Anomaly Detection, Shoufu Luo Jun 2023

Structural Anomaly Detection, Shoufu Luo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

As computer systems become more complex and powerful, the threat of sophisticated and persistent computer attacks increases dramatically. Traditional intrusion detection systems that rely on log analysis struggle to keep pace with these evolving threats, as the attacking trails are often buried in high-volume and high-velocity legitimate activities in the system. Despite tremendous progress in applying machine learning techniques to anomaly-based intrusion detection, such methods continue to suffer from a high false positive rate due to the diversity and variability of individual behavior. To address this problem, this thesis proposes a new framework for detecting structural anomalies in computer systems. The …

A Novel Approach To Extending Music Using Latent Diffusion, Keon Roohparvar, Franz J. Kurfess Jun 2023

A Novel Approach To Extending Music Using Latent Diffusion, Keon Roohparvar, Franz J. Kurfess

Master's Theses

Using deep learning to synthetically generate music is a research domain that has gained more attention from the public in the past few years. A subproblem of music generation is music extension, or the task of taking existing music and extending it. This work proposes the Continuer Pipeline, a novel technique that uses deep learning to take music and extend it in 5 second increments. It does this by treating the musical generation process as an image generation problem; we utilize latent diffusion models (LDMs) to generate spectrograms, which are image representations of music. The Continuer Pipeline is able to …

Algorithmic Bias: Causes And Effects On Marginalized Communities, Katrina M. Baha May 2023

Algorithmic Bias: Causes And Effects On Marginalized Communities, Katrina M. Baha

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Individuals from marginalized backgrounds face different healthcare outcomes due to algorithmic bias in the technological healthcare industry. Algorithmic biases, which are the biases that arise from the set of steps used to solve or analyze a problem, are evident when people from marginalized communities use healthcare technology. For example, many pulse oximeters, which are the medical devices used to measure oxygen saturation in the blood, are not able to accurately read people who have darker skin tones. Thus, people with darker skin tones are not able to receive proper health care due to their pulse oximetry data being inaccurate. This …

Feature Selection From Clinical Surveys Using Semantic Textual Similarity, Benjamin Warner May 2023

Feature Selection From Clinical Surveys Using Semantic Textual Similarity, Benjamin Warner

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Survey data collected from human subjects can contain a high number of features while having a comparatively low quantity of examples. Machine learning models that attempt to predict outcomes from survey data under these conditions can overfit and result in poor generalizability. One remedy to this issue is feature selection, which attempts to select an optimal subset of features to learn upon. A relatively unexplored source of information in the feature selection process is the usage of textual names of features, which may be semantically indicative of which features are relevant to a target outcome. The relationships between feature names …

Techsumbot: A Stack Overflow Answer Summarization Tool For Technical Query, Chengran Yang, Bowen Xu, Jiakun Liu, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stack Overflow is a popular platform for developers to seek solutions to programming-related problems. However, prior studies identified that developers may suffer from the redundant, useless, and incomplete information retrieved by the Stack Overflow search engine. To help developers better utilize the Stack Overflow knowledge, researchers proposed tools to summarize answers to a Stack Overflow question. However, existing tools use hand-craft features to assess the usefulness of each answer sentence and fail to remove semantically redundant information in the result. Besides, existing tools only focus on a certain programming language and cannot retrieve up-to-date new posted knowledge from Stack Overflow. …

Algorithms, Leadership, And Morality: Why A Mere Human Effect Drives The Preference For Human Over Algorithmic Leadership, Jack Mcguire, David De Cremer May 2023

Algorithms, Leadership, And Morality: Why A Mere Human Effect Drives The Preference For Human Over Algorithmic Leadership, Jack Mcguire, David De Cremer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Algorithms are increasingly making decisions in organizations that carry moral consequences and such decisions are considered to be ordinarily made by leaders. An important consideration to be made by organizations is therefore whether adopting algorithms in this domain will be accepted by employees and whether this practice will harm their reputation. Considering this emergent phenomenon, we set out to examine employees’ perceptions about (a) algorithmic decision-making systems employed to occupy leadership roles and make moral decisions in organizations, and (b) the reputation of organizations that employ such systems. Furthermore, we examine the extent to which the decision agent needs to …

Machine Learning-Based Data And Model Driven Bayesian Uncertanity Quantification Of Inverse Problems For Suspended Non-Structural System, Zhiyuan Qin

All Dissertations

Inverse problems involve extracting the internal structure of a physical system from noisy measurement data. In many fields, the Bayesian inference is used to address the ill-conditioned nature of the inverse problem by incorporating prior information through an initial distribution. In the nonparametric Bayesian framework, surrogate models such as Gaussian Processes or Deep Neural Networks are used as flexible and effective probabilistic modeling tools to overcome the high-dimensional curse and reduce computational costs. In practical systems and computer models, uncertainties can be addressed through parameter calibration, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty quantification, leading to improved reliability and robustness of decision and …

Loss Scaling And Step Size In Deep Learning Optimizatio, Nora Alosily Apr 2023

Loss Scaling And Step Size In Deep Learning Optimizatio, Nora Alosily

Dissertations

Deep learning training consumes ever-increasing time and resources, and that is
due to the complexity of the model, the number of updates taken to reach good
results, and both the amount and dimensionality of the data. In this dissertation,
we will focus on making the process of training more efficient by focusing on the
step size to reduce the number of computations for parameters in each update.
We achieved our objective in two new ways: we use loss scaling as a proxy for
the learning rate, and we use learnable layer-wise optimizers. Although our work
is perhaps not the first …

Investigating The Use Of Recurrent Neural Networks In Modeling Guitar Distortion Effects, Caleb Koch, Scott Hawley, Andrew Fyfe

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Guitar players have been modifying their guitar tone with audio effects ever since the mid-20th century. Traditionally, these effects have been achieved by passing a guitar signal through a series of electronic circuits which modify the signal to produce the desired audio effect. With advances in computer technology, audio “plugins” have been created to produce audio effects digitally through programming algorithms. More recently, machine learning researchers have been exploring the use of neural networks to replicate and produce audio effects initially created by analog and digital effects units. Recurrent Neural Networks have proven to be exceptional at modeling audio effects …

Fraud Pattern Detection For Nft Markets, Andrew Leppla, Jorge Olmos, Jaideep Lamba

SMU Data Science Review

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) enable ownership and transfer of digital assets using blockchain technology. As a relatively new financial asset class, NFTs lack robust oversight and regulations. These conditions create an environment that is susceptible to fraudulent activity and market manipulation schemes. This study examines the buyer-seller network transactional data from some of the most popular NFT marketplaces (e.g., AtomicHub, OpenSea) to identify and predict fraudulent activity. To accomplish this goal multiple features such as price, volume, and network metrics were extracted from NFT transactional data. These were fed into a Multiple-Scale Convolutional Neural Network that predicts suspected fraudulent activity based …

Solving Fjssp With A Genetic Algorithm, Michael John Srouji Mar 2023

Solving Fjssp With A Genetic Algorithm, Michael John Srouji

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem is an NP-Hard combinatorial problem. This paper aims to find a solution to this problem using genetic algorithms, and discuss the effectiveness of this. Initially, I did exploratory work on whether neural networks would be effective or not, and found a lot of trade offs between using neural networks and chromosome sequencing. In the end, I decided to use chromosome sequencing over neural networks, due to the scope of my problem being on a small scale rather than on a large scale.

Therefore, the genetic algorithm was implemented using chromosome sequencing. My chromosomes were …
