Cross-Domain Crowd Counting Model Based On Frequency Domain Enhancement, De Zhang, Zishan Liang, Ningning Liu
Cross-Domain Crowd Counting Model Based On Frequency Domain Enhancement, De Zhang, Zishan Liang, Ningning Liu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Crowd counting takes video surveillance data as input and can be applied to the construction of city digital twin platforms, virtual city modeling and smart city management, etc. However, when there are data domain differences between the application scenario and training scenario, counting performance often significantly decreases. A cross-domain crowd counting model based on frequency domain enhancement is proposed. To alleviate the distribution differences between domains, a frequency domain feature enhancement module and a domain invariant frequency domain adapter module are constructed: the former uses discrete cosine transform to extract key statistical features to enhance spatial representation ability, while …

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Real-time animatable 3D human avatar generation technology hold significant application value in fields such as virtual reality and remote collaboration. To address the limitations of existing methods in detail modeling, real-time performance, and robustness under novel pose driving, an efficient human avatar generation and driving method based on 3D Gaussian splatting (3DGS) is proposed. This method integrates optimized parametric human reconstruction, tri-plane feature encoding, and dynamic offset prediction to achieve efficient modeling from monocular video input. By introducing a skeleton binding and visibility analysis strategy, while designing a multi-scale regularization loss to address the overfitting problem. Simulation experiments demonstrate …

Universal Sound Separation: Distance-Aware Mixture Simulation, Co-Occurrence Conditioning, And Chain-Of-Inference, Wonjun Park
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Universal Sound Separation (USS) -- the task of disentangling arbitrary sound sources from a single-channel acoustic mixture -- remains an open challenge due to the ill-posed nature of the problem and the distributional gap between synthetic training data and real-world recordings. This thesis addresses three distinct bottlenecks in the USS pipeline: training data realism, inference strategy, and conditioning richness. We first present two knowledge-guided approaches to sound source separation. The first is a distance-aware mixing strategy that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to assign plausible loudness relationships between audio sources during training data synthesis. By querying an LLM about the …

A. Vs. I In Ai: Is There A Threshold To "Engineered" Intelligence?, Joshit Mohanty
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
Despite artificial intelligence reshaping the world, its development generates uncertainties regarding future capabilities. AI simultaneously exists as an artifact of engineering design and as autonomous intelligence, creating an observer-participant feedback loop. This paper proposes that embodied AI faces a bandwidth-limited intelligence threshold T_h that it arises from B = min(C_sens,C_Act). However, Shannon capacity measures bits while intelligence operates on concepts, necessitating a dual-channel model separating physical bandwidth B_io from representational capacity B_rep. Intelligence emerges as multi-dimensional rather than scalar, with components exhibiting different bandwidth dependencies. Surpassing T_h requires either new sensing methods expanding B, enhanced representational frameworks, or reconceptualization within …

This article studies the practical predefined-time synchronization (PPTS) for complex networks (CNs) under deception attacks based on the asynchronously intermittent event-triggered control (AIE-TC). Notably, AIE-TC effectively integrates the advantages of asynchronously intermittent control (AIC) and event-triggered control, where AIC provides each subsystem node with independent control and rest intervals. Besides, all synchronization errors of the CNs converge to an adjustable neighborhood within the predefined time by designing a bounded time-varying function into the controller. Moreover, this article considers that the transmission network is subjected to stochastic deception attacks modeled by a Markov process, which captures the state-driven dynamic transition characteristics …

Bridge-pier scour is a leading cause of flood-induced bridge failure, yet practice still lacks transparent, physics-informed tools that link data-driven prediction with design guidance. This study develops an interpretable, physics-aware machine-learning framework to predict equilibrium scour depth and translate those predictions into actionable strategies for flood-resilient infrastructure. Using the 2014 U.S. Geological Survey Pier-Scour Database (569 laboratory cases), five models: Gradient Boosting, AdaBoost (Tree), XGBoost, Gaussian Process (RBF kernel), and Kernel Ridge (polynomial), were trained and evaluated with K-fold cross-validation. Model performance was evaluated using R², RMSE, and MAE. Gradient Boosting performed best, achieving training and testing R² of 0.99 …

In recent years, vision-language models (VLMs) have been applied to various fields, including healthcare, education, finance, and manufacturing, with remarkable performance. However, concerns remain regarding VLMs' consistency and uncertainty, particularly in critical applications such as healthcare, which demand a high level of trust and reliability. This paper proposes a novel approach to evaluate uncertainty in VLMs' responses using a convex hull approach on a healthcare application for visual question answering (VQA). For any VLM, temperature refers to a sampling parameter used in probabilistic generation, which controls the randomness of the model's output. The LLM-CXR model is selected as the medical …

Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM) enables super-resolution imaging by encoding high-frequency spatial information through patterned light. While traditional Fourier-based reconstruction methods are prone to artifacts under suboptimal conditions, recent deep learning approaches often require large training datasets and lack adaptability across different imaging setups. In this work, we present Position Encoded Multi-Layer Perceptron (PEM) network that leverages implicit neural representations (INRs) and SIM forward-model-driven modeling to reconstruct super-resolved images without any training data. PEM-SIM represents each spatial coordinate as a combination of sinusoidal functions across multiple frequencies, enabling rich encoding of fine spatial detail. A forward model grounded in SIM image …

Traditional detection methods often struggle to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated fraudulent schemes. Semantic modeling, which focuses on understanding the meaning and relationships within data, offers a promising avenue for enhancing fraud detection and risk identification. This review paper explores the application paths of semantic modeling in this domain. We begin with a historical overview of fraud detection techniques, highlighting the limitations of traditional approaches. Subsequently, we delve into core themes, including knowledge graph-based fraud detection and semantic rule-based inference for risk assessment. We then compare and …

Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming critical infrastructure in scientific, healthcare, and governmental contexts. As frontier AI laboratories increasingly partner with government agencies, a fundamental question arises: Who should control the safety and policy-enforcement layers that constrain model behavior? Current safety mechanisms (LLM guardrails) are typically designed for generic "harmlessness" and operate by detecting semantic patterns and refusing requests. However, they are inadequate governance instruments because they cannot implement auditable, domain-specific controls tied to external regulatory policy objects (e.g., control lists or rules governing personally identifying information). Even a perfectly aligned model is not able to express institution-specific policy without …

Background/Objectives: Accurate assessment of neuromuscular reflexes, such as the Hoffmann reflex (H-reflex), plays a critical role in sports science, rehabilitation, and clinical neurology. Conventional interpretation of H-reflex electromyography (EMG) waveforms is subject to inter-rater variability and interpretive bias, limiting reliability and standardization. This study aims to develop an automated, interpretable, and robust agentic AI–driven framework for H-reflex waveform analysis. Methods: We propose a fine-tuned Vision–Language Model (VLM) consortium combined with a reasoning Large Language Model (LLM)–enabled decision support system for automated H-reflex interpretation. Multiple VLMs were fine-tuned on curated datasets of H-reflex EMG waveform images annotated with expert clinical observations, …
A Specification-Driven Framework For Self-Supervised Learning In Specialized Vision Domains, Mahmut S. Gokmen
A Specification-Driven Framework For Self-Supervised Learning In Specialized Vision Domains, Mahmut S. Gokmen
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Self-supervised learning (SSL) has emerged as a principled approach to visual representation learning that derives supervisory signal directly from unlabeled data, enabling foundation models to be trained at scale without manual annotation. Deployments in medical imaging and biometric recognition have demonstrated the potential of this paradigm, yet the assumptions that make SSL effective on natural image benchmarks fail systematically in specialized domains. Generic SSL pipelines encode a tacit assumption that the most informative correspondence is spatial proximity within a single acquisition. In specialized domains this assumption breaks at the level of the data-generating process: the signal that carries domain-specific information …

Communicating the design and results of agent-based models (ABMs) to subject matter experts is challenging, which hinders participation and limits trust in simulation-based decision support. Large language models (LLMs) can communicate ABMs as textual summaries, thus complementing traditional disclosure through statistical and visualization techniques. While prior work translated the structure of conceptual models into narratives via LLMs, our extension covers the dynamics of simulation models via an automated simulation-to-text method that extracts contextual information from NetLogo ABMs, performs repeated simulations, and generates narrative descriptions (including the model’s purpose, parameters, and simulation dynamics) using mutimodal LLMs. Furthermore, four summarization algorithms spanning …

A Web-Based Wizard-Of-Oz Platform For Collaborative And Reproducible Human-Robot Interaction Research, Sean O'Connor
Honors Theses
The Wizard-of-Oz (WoZ) technique is widely used in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) research, but two persistent problems limit its effectiveness: existing tools impose technical barriers that exclude non-engineering domain experts (the Accessibility Problem), and the fragmented landscape of robot-specific implementations makes interaction scripts difficult to port across platforms (the Reproducibility Problem- concerning execution consistency and portability, not third-party replication). Through a literature review, I identified three design principles to address both: a hierarchical specification model, an event-driven execution model, and a plugin architecture that decouples experiment logic from robot-specific implementations. I realized these principles in HRIStudio, an open-source, web-based platform providing …

Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC) frameworks coordinate access requests based on subject, object, and environment attributes, as well as policy rules, and are widely used in corporate security systems. Recently, machine learning has been applied to ABAC to address policy-generation imbalances, misassigned privileges, and attribute leakages. However, existing MLBAC techniques do not consider the structural constraints and attribute interdependencies present in traditional ABAC systems. Moreover, these frameworks have not been extensively evaluated under black-box attack scenarios. To address these gaps, we propose extensions to MLBAC that integrate structural constraints, attribute dynamism, and attribute weighting into the MLBAC objective function. Additionally, we …

This article investigates the problem of prescribed-time Nash equilibrium (NE) seeking for a multicluster pursuit–evasion game (PEG) subject to external disturbances. To mitigate the impact of disturbances and reach the NE within a user-defined prescribed time, a prescribed-time disturbance observer (PTDO) is devised to estimate and compensate for them. Based on this observation, a novel control algorithm is developed, which facilitates collaboration among multiple pursuers to capture multiple evaders within the prescribed time. It is theoretically demonstrated that the designed algorithm ensures prescribed-time convergence to the NE of the multicluster PEG with disturbances. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to verify …

Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a potential distributed learning paradigm that enables model training on edge devices (i.e., workers) while preserving data privacy. However, its reliance on a centralized server leads to limited scalability. Decentralized federated learning (DFL) eliminates the dependency on a centralized server by enabling peer-to-peer model exchange. Existing DFL mechanisms mainly employ synchronous communication, which may result in training inefficiencies under heterogeneous and dynamic edge environments. Although a few recent asynchronous DFL (ADFL) mechanisms have been proposed to address these issues, they typically yield stale model aggregation and frequent model transmission, leading to degraded training performance …

Every year there are an estimated 80,000–90,000 new glioma cases, highlighting the need for reliable imaging-based decision support. Although deep learning has improved tumor sub-region segmentation, many state-of-the-art models fail to fully capture complementary information across T1, T1Gd, T2, and FLAIR MRI modalities and often operate as “black boxes,” limiting physician trust when precise delineation is critical for surgical planning, radiation targeting, and treatment monitoring. To address these limitations, we propose AIMS, an Adaptive Integrated Multi-Modal Segmentation framework that maintains modality-specific feature streams and employs adaptive self-attention within a hierarchical CNN-Transformer architecture to prioritize and fuse multi-modal MRI features.
