Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Consumer credit scoring and credit risk management have been the core research problem in financial industry for decades. In this paper, we target at inferring this particular user attribute called credit, i.e., whether a user is of the good credit class or not, from online social data. However, existing credit scoring methods, mainly relying on financial data, face severe challenges when tackling the heterogeneous social data. Moreover, social data only contains extremely weak signals about users’ credit label. To that end, we put forward a Latent User Behavior Dimension based Credit Model (LUBD-CM) to capture these small signals for personal …

—Many elderly prefer to live independently at their own homes. However, how to use modern technologies to ensure their safety presents vast challenges and opportunities. Being able to non-intrusively sense the activities performed by the elderly definitely has great advantages in various circumstances. Non-intrusive activity recognition can be performed using the embedded sensors in modern smartphones. However, not many activity recognition models are robust enough that allow the subjects to carry the smartphones in different pockets with unrestricted orientations and varying deviations. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, no existing literature studied the difference between the youth and the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While a variety of persuasion agents have been created and applied in different domains such as marketing, military training and health industry, there is a lack of a model which can provide a unified framework for different persuasion strategies. Specifically, persuasion is not adaptable to the individuals’ personal states in different situations. Grounded in the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM), this paper presents a computational model called Model for Adaptive Persuasion (MAP) for virtual agents. MAP is a semi-connected network model which enables an agent to adapt its persuasion strategies through feedback. We have implemented and evaluated a MAP-based virtual nurse …

The Value Of Diagnostic Software And Doctors' Decision Making, Babatunde Ayodele Alaofin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The prevalence of medical misdiagnosis has remained high despite the adoption of diagnostic software. This ongoing controversy about the role of technology in mitigating the problem of misdiagnosis centers on the question of whether diagnostic software does reduce the incidence of misdiagnosis if properly relied upon by physicians. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional study based on planned behavior theory was to measure doctors' opinions of diagnostic technology's medical utility. Recruitment e-mails were sent to 3,100 AMA-accredited physicians through their database that yielded a sample of 99 physicians for the study. One-sample t tests and, where appropriate because of non-normal …

Research Agenda Into Human-Intelligence/Machine-Intelligence Governance, Teddy Steven Cotter

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Since the birth of modern artificial intelligence (AI) at the 1956 Dartmouth Conference, the AI community has pursued modeling and coding of human intelligence into AI reasoning processes (HI Þ MI). The Dartmouth Conference's fundamental assertion was that every aspect of human learning and intelligence could be so precisely described that it could be simulated in AI. With the exception of knowledge specific areas (such as IBM's Big Blue and a few others), sixty years later the AI community is not close to coding global human intelligence into AI. In parallel, the knowledge management (KM) community has pursued understanding of …

Robots are increasingly becoming key players in human-robot teams. To become effective teammates, robots must possess profound understanding of an environment, be able to reason about the desired commands and goals within a specific context, and be able to communicate with human teammates in a clear and natural way. To address these challenges, we have developed an intelligence architecture that combines cognitive components to carry out high-level cognitive tasks, semantic perception to label regions in the world, and a natural language component to reason about the command and its relationship to the objects in the world. This paper describes recent …

Integrating Motivated Learning And K-Winner-Take-All To Coordinate Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, Teck-Hou Teng, Ah-Hwee Tan, Janusz Starzyk, Yuan-Sin Tan, Loo-Nin Teow

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This work addresses the coordination issue in distributed optimization problem (DOP) where multiple distinct and time-critical tasks are performed to satisfy a global objective function. The performance of these tasks has to be coordinated due to the sharing of consumable resources and the dependency on non-consumable resources. Knowing that it can be sub-optimal to predefine the performance of the tasks for large DOPs, the multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) framework is adopted wherein an agent is used to learn the performance of each distinct task using reinforcement learning. To coordinate MARL, we propose a novel coordination strategy integrating Motivated Learning (ML) …

Cenknn: A Scalable And Effective Text Classifier, Guansong Pang, Huidong Jin, Shengyi Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A big challenge in text classification is to perform classification on a large-scale and high-dimensional text corpus in the presence of imbalanced class distributions and a large number of irrelevant or noisy term features. A number of techniques have been proposed to handle this challenge with varying degrees of success. In this paper, by combining the strengths of two widely used text classification techniques, K-Nearest-Neighbor (KNN) and centroid based (Centroid) classifiers, we propose a scalable and effective flat classifier, called CenKNN, to cope with this challenge. CenKNN projects high-dimensional (often hundreds of thousands) documents into a low-dimensional (normally a few …

It has been well recognized that human makes use of both declarative memory and procedural memory for decision making and problem solving. In this paper, we propose a computational model with the overall architecture and individual processes for realizing the interaction between the declarative and procedural memory based on self-organizing neural networks. We formalize two major types of memory interactions and show how each of them can be embedded into autonomous reinforcement learning agents. Our experiments based on the Toad and Frog puzzle and a strategic game known as Starcraft Broodwar have shown that the cooperative interaction between declarative knowledge …

Conference papers

Rapid growth in the number of measures available to describe customer-organization relationships has presented a serious challenge for Business Intelligence (BI) interface developers as they attempt to provide business users with key customer information without requiring users to painstakingly sift through many interface windows and layers. In this paper we introduce a prototype Intelligent User Interface that we have deployed to partially address this issue. The interface builds on machine learning techniques to construct a ranking model of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that are used to select and present the most important customer metrics that can be made available to …

Semantic Services For Enterprise Data Exchange, James A. Sauvinet Dec 2013

Semantic Services For Enterprise Data Exchange, James A. Sauvinet

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Data exchange between different information systems is a complex issue. Each system, designed for a specific purpose, is defined using a vocabulary of the specific business. While Web services allow interoperations and data communications between multiple systems, the clients of the services must understand the vocabulary of the targeting data resources to select services or to construct queries. In this thesis we explore an ontology-based approach to facilitate clients’ queries in the vocabulary of the clients’ own domain, and to automate the query processing. A governmental inter-department data query process has been used to illustrate the capability of the semantic …

Short-Term Inflation Forecasting Models For Nigeria, Sani I. Doguwa, Sarah O. Alade Dec 2013

Short-Term Inflation Forecasting Models For Nigeria, Sani I. Doguwa, Sarah O. Alade

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

Short-term inflation forecasting is an essential component of the monetary policy projections at the Central Bank of Nigeria. This paper proposes four short-term headline inflation forecasting models using the SARIMA and SARIMAX processes and compares their performance using the pseudo-out-of-sample forecasting procedure over July 2011 to September 2013. According to the results the best forecasting performance is demonstrated by the model based on the all items CPI estimated using the SARIMAX model. This model is, therefore, recommended for use in short-term forecasting of headline inflation in Nigeria. The forecasting performance up to eight months ahead, of the models based on …

An Efficient Two Sample Capture-Recapture Model With High Recaptures, Danjuma Jibasen, Yusuf J. Adams Dec 2013

An Efficient Two Sample Capture-Recapture Model With High Recaptures, Danjuma Jibasen, Yusuf J. Adams

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper proposed an efficient two sample capture-recapture model (Ma) with high recaptures and compared it with the existing models like the model of no factor effect (Mo), behavioral response model (Mb) and the Petersen model (Ms), using simulated data. We found that the Petersen model provides a better estimate of the population size when the observations follow a hypergeometric distribution and the population is overestimated when recapture is high. It was also found that the proposed model provides a better estimator of the population size than the existing ones when the recapture is high. This model is particularly useful …

Causal Relationship Between Stock Market Index And Exchange Rate: Evidence From Nigeria, Abdulrasheed Zubair Dec 2013

Causal Relationship Between Stock Market Index And Exchange Rate: Evidence From Nigeria, Abdulrasheed Zubair

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper uses Johansen’s cointegration to test for the possibility of cointegration and Granger-causality to estimate the causal relationship between stock market index and monetary indicators (exchange rate and M2) before and during the global financial crisis for Nigeria, using monthly data for the period 2001–2011. Results suggest absence of long-run relationship before and during the crisis. The Granger-causality tests show a uni-directional causality running from M2 to ASI before the crisis while during the period of the crisis there is absence of causality between the variables. This suggests that ASI show responsiveness to M2. Thus, absence of the direct …
