Survey On Remnant Data Research: The Artefacts Recovered And The Implications In A Cyber Security Conscious World, Michael James, Patryk Szewczyk Jan 2016

Survey On Remnant Data Research: The Artefacts Recovered And The Implications In A Cyber Security Conscious World, Michael James, Patryk Szewczyk

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

The prevalence of remnant data in second hand storage media is well documented. Since 2004 there have been ten separate papers released through Edith Cowan University alone. Despite numerous government agencies providing advice on securing personal and corporate information, and news articles highlighting the need for data security, the availability of personal and confidential data on second hand storage devices is continuing, indicating a systemic laissez faire attitude to data security, even in our supposedly cyber security conscious world. The research continues, but there seems to be a lack of correlation of these studies to identify trends or common themes …

De-Anonymization Attack Anatomy And Analysis Of Ohio Nursing Workforce Data Anonymization, Jacob M. Miracle Jan 2016

De-Anonymization Attack Anatomy And Analysis Of Ohio Nursing Workforce Data Anonymization, Jacob M. Miracle

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Data generalization (anonymization) is a widely misunderstood technique for preserving individual privacy in non-interactive data publishing. Easily avoidable anonymization failures are still occurring 14 years after the discovery of basic techniques to protect against them. Identities of individuals in anonymized datasets are at risk of being disclosed by cyber attackers who exploit these failures. To demonstrate the importance of proper data anonymization we present three perspectives on data anonymization. First, we examine several de-anonymization attacks to formalize the anatomy used to conduct attacks on anonymous data. Second, we examine the vulnerabilities of an anonymous nursing workforce survey to convey how …

Dynamic Privacy Management In Services Based Interactions, Nariman Tm Ammar Jan 2016

Dynamic Privacy Management In Services Based Interactions, Nariman Tm Ammar

Wayne State University Dissertations

Technology advancements have enabled the distribution and sharing of users personal data over several data sources. Each data source is potentially managed by a different organization, which may expose its data as a Web service. Using such Web services, dynamic composition of atomic data items coupled with the context in which the data is accessed may breach sensitive data that may not comply with the users preference at the time of data collection. Thus, providing uniform access policies to such data can lead to privacy problems. Some fairly recent research has focused on providing solutions for dynamic privacy management. This …

When Disclosure Is Involuntary: Empowering Users With Control To Reduce Concerns, David W. Wilson, Ryan M. Schuetzler, Bradley Dorn, Jeffrey Gainer Proudfoot

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Modern organizations must carefully balance the practice of gathering large amounts of valuable data from individuals with the associated ethical considerations and potential negative public image inherent in breaches of privacy. As it becomes increasingly commonplace for many types of information to be collected without individuals' knowledge or consent, managers and researchers alike can benefit from understanding how individuals react to such involuntary disclosures, and how these reactions can impact evaluations of the data-collecting organizations. This research develops and empirically tests a theoretical model that shows how empowering individuals with a sense of control over their personal information can help …

Multi Layer Security (MLS) is the art of hiding the fact that communication is taking place, by hiding information in other information. Many different carrier file formats can be used, but digital images are the most popular because of their frequency on the internet. For hiding secret information in images, there exists a large variety of techniques some are more complex than others and all of them have respective strong and weak points. Different applications may require absolute invisibility of the secret information, while others require a large secret message to be hidden. This project report intends to give an …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Location-based services (LBSs) flood mobile phones nowadays, but their use poses an evident privacy risk. The locations accompanying the LBS queries can be exploited by the LBS provider to build the user profile of visited locations, which might disclose sensitive data, such as work or home locations. The classic concept of entropy is widely used to evaluate privacy in these scenarios, where the information is represented as a sequence of independent samples of categorized data. However, since the LBS queries might be sent very frequently, location profiles can be improved by adding temporal dependencies, thus becoming mobility profiles, where location …

Pinpoint: Efficient And Effective Resource Isolation For Mobile Security And Privacy, Paul Ratazzi, Ashok Bommisetti, Nian Ji, Wenliang Du May 2015

Pinpoint: Efficient And Effective Resource Isolation For Mobile Security And Privacy, Paul Ratazzi, Ashok Bommisetti, Nian Ji, Wenliang Du

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Virtualization is frequently used to isolate untrusted processes and control their access to sensitive resources. However, isolation usually carries a price in terms of less resource sharing and reduced inter-process communication. In an open architecture such as Android, this price and its impact on performance, usability, and transparency must be carefully considered. Although previous efforts in developing general-purpose isolation solutions have shown that some of these negative sideeffects can be mitigated, doing so involves overcoming significant design challenges by incorporating numerous additional platform complexities not directly related to improved security. Thus, the general purpose solutions become inefficient and burdensome if …

Privacy-Aware Access Control For Message Exchange In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Sushama Karumanchi, Anna Squicciarini, Dan Lin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vehicular ad hoc networks are a promising and increasingly important paradigm. Their applications range from safety enhancement to mobile entertainment services. However, their deployment requires several security issues to be resolved, particularly, since they rely on insecure wireless communication. In this paper, we propose a cryptographic-based access control framework for vehicles to securely exchange messages in a controlled fashion by integrating moving object modeling techniques with cryptographic policies. To our knowledge, this is the first time a comprehensive framework for access control in VANETs is proposed.

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The emerging growth of online social networks has opened new doors for various kinds of applications such as business intelligence and expanding social connections through friend recommendations. In particular, friend recommendation facilitates users to explore new friendships based on social network structures, user profile information (similar interest) or both. However, as the privacy concerns of users are on the rise, searching for new friends is not a straightforward task under the assumption that users' information is kept private. Along this direction, this paper proposes two private friend recommendation algorithms based on the social network structure and the users' social tags. …

Municipal open data raises hopes and concerns. The activities of cities produce a wide array of data, data that is vastly enriched by ubiquitous computing. Municipal data is opened as it is pushed to, pulled by, and spilled to the public through online portals, requests for public records, and releases by cities and their vendors, contractors, and partners. By opening data, cities hope to raise public trust and prompt innovation. Municipal data, however, is often about the people who live, work, and travel in the city. By opening data, cities raise concern for privacy and social justice.

Amulet: A Secure Architecture For Mhealth Applications For Low-Power Wearable Devices, Andrés Molina-Markham, Ronald Peterson, Joseph Skinner, Tianlong Yun, Bhargav Golla, Kevin Freeman, Travis Peters, Jacob Sorber, Ryan Halter, David Kotz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Interest in using mobile technologies for health-related applications (mHealth) has increased. However, none of the available mobile platforms provide the essential properties that are needed by these applications. An mHealth platform must be (i) secure; (ii) provide high availability; and (iii) allow for the deployment of multiple third-party mHealth applications that share access to an individual's devices and data. Smartphones may not be able to provide property (ii) because there are activities and situations in which an individual may not be able to carry them (e.g., while in a contact sport). A low-power wearable device can provide higher availability, remaining …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile instant messengers serve as major interaction media for everyday chats. Contrary to the belief that a message is seen only by a designated receiver, it can be accidentally exposed to someone nearby and could result in embarrassing moments, for example, when the receiver is viewing pictures together with his friend upon the message arrival. To understand the significance of the problem and core factors that cause such embarrassments, we collected 961 in-situ responses from 14 participants upon the actual message arrival and analyzed them from the perspective of the receiver's situation. The results showed that 29% of message arrivals …

A Wearable System That Knows Who Wears It, Cory Cornelius, Ronald Peterson, Joseph Skinner, Ryan Halter, David Kotz Jun 2014

A Wearable System That Knows Who Wears It, Cory Cornelius, Ronald Peterson, Joseph Skinner, Ryan Halter, David Kotz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Body-area networks of pervasive wearable devices are increasingly used for health monitoring, personal assistance, entertainment, and home automation. In an ideal world, a user would simply wear their desired set of devices with no configuration necessary: the devices would discover each other, recognize that they are on the same person, construct a secure communications channel, and recognize the user to which they are attached. In this paper we address a portion of this vision by offering a wearable system that unobtrusively recognizes the person wearing it. Because it can recognize the user, our system can properly label sensor data or …

Mobile Banking Security Using Gps And Ldpc Codes, Matthew Francis Moccaro May 2014

Mobile Banking Security Using Gps And Ldpc Codes, Matthew Francis Moccaro

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mobile Banking is becoming a major part of our world's financial system. Being able to manage one's finances on a mobile device can provide services that can make users more productive. It can also serve as a means of financial freedom to those who are unable to access physical banking facilities due to distance, or other problems. However, with such freedom also comes the need for security. A person's financial information is one of the most targeted groups of information by attackers. To secure these mobile freedoms, this paper presents a system to secure mobile banking procedures using global positioning …

Towards Semantically Secure Outsourcing Of Association Rule Mining On Categorical Data, Junzuo Lai, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Jian Weng, Chaowen Guan, Qiang Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

When outsourcing association rule mining to cloud, it is critical for data owners to protect both sensitive raw data and valuable mining results from being snooped at cloud servers. Previous solutions addressing this concern add random noise to the raw data and/or encrypt the raw data with a substitution mapping. However, these solutions do not provide semantic security; partial information about raw data or mining results can be potentially discovered by an adversary at cloud servers under a reasonable assumption that the adversary knows some plaintext–ciphertext pairs. In this paper, we propose the first semantically secure solution for outsourcing association …

Predicting Human Behavior, Tamara Kneese Mar 2014

Predicting Human Behavior, Tamara Kneese

Media Studies

Countless highly accurate predictions can be made from trace data, with varying degrees of personal or societal consequence (e.g., search engines predict hospital admission, gaming companies can predict compulsive gambling problems, government agencies predict criminal activity). Predicting human behavior can be both hugely beneficial and deeply problematic depending on the context. What kinds of predictive privacy harms are emerging? And what are the implications for systems of oversight and due process protections? For example, what are the implications for employment, health care and policing when predictive models are involved? How should varied organizations address what they can predict?

Vehicle Re-Routing Strategies For Congestion Avoidance, Juan Pan Jan 2014

Vehicle Re-Routing Strategies For Congestion Avoidance, Juan Pan

Dissertations

Traffic congestion causes driver frustration and costs billions of dollars annually in lost time and fuel consumption. This dissertation introduces a cost-effective and easily deployable vehicular re-routing system that reduces the effects of traffic congestion. The system collects real-time traffic data from vehicles and road-side sensors, and computes proactive, individually tailored re-routing guidance, which is pushed to vehicles when signs of congestion are observed on their routes. Subsequently, this dissertation proposes and evaluates two classes of re-routing strategies designed to be incorporated into this system, namely, Single Shortest Path strategies and Multiple Shortest Paths Strategies.

These strategies are firstly implemented …

This paper identifies MapReduce issues and challenges in handling Big Data with the objective of providing an overview of the field, facilitating better planning and management of Big Data projects, and identifying opportunities for future research in this field. The identified challenges are grouped …

Privacy And Trustworthiness Management In Moving Object Environments, Sashi Gurung Jan 2014

Privacy And Trustworthiness Management In Moving Object Environments, Sashi Gurung

Doctoral Dissertations

"The use of location-based services (LBS) (e.g., Intel's Thing Finder) is expanding. Besides the traditional centralized location-based services, distributed ones are also emerging due to the development of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), a dynamic network which allows vehicles to communicate with one another. Due to the nature of the need of tracking users' locations, LBS have raised increasing concerns on users' location privacy. Although many research has been carried out for users to submit their locations anonymously, the collected anonymous location data may still be mapped to individuals when the adversary has related background knowledge.

To improve location privacy, in …

Mining Privacy Settings To Find Optimal Privacy-Utility Tradeoffs For Social Network Services, Shumin Guo Jan 2014

Mining Privacy Settings To Find Optimal Privacy-Utility Tradeoffs For Social Network Services, Shumin Guo

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Privacy has been a big concern for users of social network services (SNS). On recent criticism about privacy protection, most SNS now provide fine privacy controls, allowing users to set visibility levels for almost every profile item. However, this also creates a number of difficulties for users. First, SNS providers often set most items by default to the highest visibility to improve the utility of social network, which may conflict with users' intention. It is often formidable for a user to fine-tune tens of privacy settings towards the user desired settings. Second, tuning privacy settings involves an intricate tradeoff between …
