Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Privacy preservation in RFID systems is a very important issue in modern day world. Privacy activists have been worried about the invasion of user privacy while using various RFID systems and services. Hence, significant efforts have been made to design RFID systems that preserve users' privacy. Majority of the privacy preserving protocols for RFID systems require the reader to search all tags in the system in order to identify a single RFID tag which not efficient for large scale systems. In order to achieve high-speed authentication in large-scale RFID systems, researchers propose tree-based approaches, in which any pair of tags …

Data-Driven Network-Centric Threat Assessment, Dae Wook Kim Jan 2017

Data-Driven Network-Centric Threat Assessment, Dae Wook Kim

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

As the Internet has grown increasingly popular as a communication and information sharing platform, it has given rise to two major types of Internet security threats related to two primary entities: end-users and network services. First, information leakages from networks can reveal sensitive information about end-users. Second, end-users systems can be compromised through attacks on network services, such as scanning-and-exploit attacks, spamming, drive-by downloads, and fake anti-virus software. Designing threat assessments to detect these threats is, therefore, of great importance, and a number of the detection systems have been proposed. However, these existing threat assessment systems face significant challenges in …

Assessment Of Security Vulnerabilities In Wearable Devices, Brian Cusack, Bryce Antony, Gerard Ward, Shaunak Mody

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Wearable devices have proliferated in usage and human experience, and they provide convenience for personal information requirements. These devices are both sensory and immersive for the diverse global network that is generally termed the Internet of things (IoT). The immediacy of the two-way communication created in the IoT has made vulnerable human behaviour and raised debate around information ownership and privacy expectations. The legitimacy of ownership of information and its reuse are prevalent problems. In this research, we tested four wearable devices that share 44% of the current market, for security vulnerabilities. We found serious weaknesses that could result in …

Multiparty Computations In Varying Contexts, Paul Laird, Sarah Jane Delany, Pierpaolo Dondio Jan 2017

Multiparty Computations In Varying Contexts, Paul Laird, Sarah Jane Delany, Pierpaolo Dondio

Conference papers

Recent developments in the automatic transformation of protocols into Secure Multiparty Computation (SMC) interactions, and the selection of appropriate schemes for their implementation have improved usabililty of SMC. Poor performance along with data leakage or errors caused by coding mistakes and complexity had hindered SMC usability. Previous practice involved integrating the SMC code into the application being designed, and this tight integration meant the code was not reusable without modification. The progress that has been made to date towards the selection of different schemes focuses solely on the two-party paradigm in a static set-up, and does not consider changing contexts. …

Video Annotation By Crowd Workers With Privacy-Preserving Local Disclosure, Apeksha Dipak Kumavat Dec 2016

Video Annotation By Crowd Workers With Privacy-Preserving Local Disclosure, Apeksha Dipak Kumavat

Open Access Theses

Advancements in computer vision are still not reliable enough for detecting video content including humans and their actions. Microtask crowdsourcing on task markets such as Amazon Mechnical Turk and Upwork can bring humans into the loop. However, engaging crowd workers to annotate non-public video footage risks revealing the identities of people in the video who may have a right to anonymity.

This thesis demonstrates how we can engage untrusted crowd workers to detect behaviors and objects, while robustly concealing the identities of all faces. We developed a web-based system that presents obfuscated videos to crowd workers, and provides them with …

One-Round Strong Oblivious Signature-Based Envelope, Rongmao Chen, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, Fuchun Guo, Mingwu Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Oblivious Signature-Based Envelope (OSBE) has been widely employed for anonymity-orient and privacy-preserving applications. The conventional OSBE execution relies on a secure communication channel to protect against eavesdroppers. In TCC 2012, Blazy, Pointcheval and Vergnaud proposed a framework of OSBE (BPV-OSBE) without requiring any secure channel by clarifying and enhancing the OSBE security notions. They showed how to generically build an OSBE scheme satisfying the new strong security in the standard model with a common-reference string. Their framework requires 2-round interactions and relies on the smooth projective hash function (SPHF) over special languages, i.e., languages from encryption of signatures. In this …

We use the interview results to guide an exploration of design directions for mobile video.

Anonymous Proxy Signature With Hierarchical Traceability, Jiannan Wei, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Kaitai Liang Apr 2016

Anonymous Proxy Signature With Hierarchical Traceability, Jiannan Wei, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Kaitai Liang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Anonymous proxy signatures are very useful in the construction of anonymous credential systems such as anonymous voting and anonymous authentication protocols. As a basic requirement, we should ensure an honest proxy signer is anonymous. However, in order to prevent the proxy signer from abusing the signing right, we should also allow dishonest signers to be traced. In this paper, we present three novel anonymous proxy signature schemes with different levels of (namely, public, internal and original signer) traceability. We define the formal definitions and security models for these three different settings, and prove the security of our proposed schemes under …

Privacy And Accountability In Black-Box Medicine, Roger Allan Ford, W. Nicholson Price Ii Jan 2016

Privacy And Accountability In Black-Box Medicine, Roger Allan Ford, W. Nicholson Price Ii

Law Faculty Scholarship

Black-box medicine—the use of big data and sophisticated machine learning techniques for health-care applications—could be the future of personalized medicine. Black-box medicine promises to make it easier to diagnose rare diseases and conditions, identify the most promising treatments, and allocate scarce resources among different patients. But to succeed, it must overcome two separate, but related, problems: patient privacy and algorithmic accountability. Privacy is a problem because researchers need access to huge amounts of patient health information to generate useful medical predictions. And accountability is a problem because black-box algorithms must be verified by outsiders to ensure they are accurate and …
