Open Access Dissertations

Engineering education research has grown into a flourishing community with an-ever increasing number of publications and scholars. However, recent studies show that a significant amount of engineering education knowledge retains a clear disciplinary orientation. If the gaps in scholarly collaboration continue to be prevalent within the entire community, it will become increasingly difficult to sustain community memory. This will eventually inhibit the propagation of innovations and slow the movement of research findings into practice.

This dissertation studies scholarly collaboration in the engineering education research community. It provides a clear characterization of collaboration problems and proposes potential solutions. The dissertation is …

Using Fpgas As A Reconfigurable Teaching Tool Throughout Cs Systems Curriculum, D. Brian Larkins, William M. Jones, H. Erin Rickard

Computing Sciences

This paper describes the adaptation of several common computer science courses to include the use of FPGA-based systems for project and assignment work. One of the principal challenges in modern curriculum design is balancing between breadth and depth of course topics while simultaneously reinforcing the interconnections among topics in the field. To address these challenges, faculty are often forced to approximate real-world systems, sometimes at the expense of any hands-on experience. At Coastal Carolina, we have integrated FPGA systems first used in our hardware-based courses into several higher-level systems and applications courses. This allows us to leverage student familiarity with …

An Experience-Driven Pedagogy For The Instruction Of Software Testing In Computer Science, Christopher Duane Brown

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

In the realm of computer programming, the experience of writing a program is used to reinforce concepts and evaluate ability. This research uses three case studies to evaluate the introduction of testing through Kolb's Experiential Learning Model (ELM). We then analyze the impact of those testing experiences to determine methods for improving future courses.

The first testing experience that students encounter are unit test reports in their early courses. This course demonstrates that automating and improving feedback can provide more ELM iterations. The JUnit Generation (JUG) tool also provided a positive experience for the instructor by reducing the overall workload. …

Web Based Virtual Environment For Education - S'Cape, Atul Thapliyal Dec 2012

Web Based Virtual Environment For Education - S'Cape, Atul Thapliyal

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Simulations provide an environment to experiment safely, openly, and repeatedly for learning mastery. However, many simulation environments experienced within a classroom fail to include automated assessment components or automated data collection. Even when assessments are included, often they fail to account for the unpredictable nature of decision-making within a complex, 3D, open-ended simulation environment. Embedding assessments within a virtual simulation environment poses several challenges. First, the program must provide assessments aligned with educational requirements that will not take the learner cognitively “away” from their activities. Second, the program must not detract from the game-like experience that learners find engaging. Third, …

Effective Computer Programming Instruction For Pre-University Albanian Students, Robert Mccloud, Ardiana Sula

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

The relationship between pre-university students and technology is frequently overrated. While we receive glowing reports about how young people are knowledgeable about computers, the truth is that their knowledge is typically about computer content and the manipulation of applications. Young students too often treat the actual programming and understanding of computers as a sort of magical mystery.

In this paper we look at a new Albanian initiative to identify and nurture the most talented of our pre-university students. In particular we look at contributions to the goal of making Albanians the most talented programmers in this area of Europe.

The …

Teaching Introductory Programming Concepts: A Comparison Of Scratch And Arduino, Anne Beug Jun 2012

Teaching Introductory Programming Concepts: A Comparison Of Scratch And Arduino, Anne Beug

Master's Theses

Computing has become an integral part of modern America. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that between 2008 and 2018, the United States will have 1.4 million job openings in computing fields [1]. Since the early 2000's (just after the "dot com bust"), the number of students enrolled in computing majors (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, etc.) dropped precipitously by over 50%, only starting to rise again in 2009 [2]. One way to rectify to this gap between demand and supply is to start training students in computational thinking during high school. While the Computer Science Advanced Placement AB test has …

Tangible Interaction And Learning: The Case For A Hybrid Approach, Michael S. Horn, R. Jordan Crouser, Marina U. Bers Jun 2011

Tangible Interaction And Learning: The Case For A Hybrid Approach, Michael S. Horn, R. Jordan Crouser, Marina U. Bers

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Research involving tangible interaction and children has often focused on how tangibles might sup- port or improve learning compared to more traditional methods. In this paper, we review three of our research studies involving tangible computer programming that have addressed this question in a variety of learning environments with a diverse population of children. Through these studies, we identify situations in which tangible interaction seems to offer advantages for learning; how- ever, we have also identify situations in which tangible interaction proves less useful and an alternative interaction style provides a more appropriate medium for learning. Thus, we advocate for …

This report describes a software system that supports the tracking of child and program outcomes for special education within Utah. …

Targeting Fpga-Based Processors For An Implementation-Driven Compiler Construction Course, D. Brian Larkins, William M. Jones Mar 2011

Targeting Fpga-Based Processors For An Implementation-Driven Compiler Construction Course, D. Brian Larkins, William M. Jones

Computing Sciences

This paper describes the adaptation of a modern compiler construction course to target an FPGA-based hardware platform used throughout our computer science curriculum. One of the significant challenges in teaching using modern hardware platforms is the inordinate complexity of commonly used systems. To avoid this, many compiler courses target a less complex platform implemented via a simulator or a higher-level virtual or abstract hardware platform. To avoid the complexity of a modern superscalar multicore architecture and to improve the kinesthetic experience of students implementing the course compiler, we have provided a framework and runtime support for using an FPGA-based RISC …

Lessons Learned From Comprehensive Deployments Of Multiagent Cscl Applications I-Minds And Classroomwiki, Nobel Khandaker, Leen-Kiat Soh, L.D. Miller, Adam D. Eck, Hong Jiang

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Recent years have seen a surge in the use of intelligent computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) tools for improving student learning in traditional classrooms. However, adopting such a CSCL tool in a classroom still requires the teacher to develop (or decide on which to adopt) the CSCL tool and the CSCL script, design the relevant pedagogical aspects (i.e., the learning objectives, assessment method, etc.) to overcome the associated challenges (e.g., free riding, student assessment, forming student groups that improve student learning, etc). We have used a multiagent-based system to develop a CSCL application and multiagent frameworks to form student groups that …

Mapping The Organizational Relations Within Physical Security’S Body Of Knowledge: A Management Heuristic Of Sound Theory And Best Practice, Richard Coole, David J. Brooks

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

Security Science education at university levels is still in its infancy, with little agreement towards knowledge, curriculum and competency. Therefore, it is essential that educators draw on relevant literature highlighting means of efficient and effective knowledge transfer for tertiary students within the Security Science domain. Such knowledge transfer will reduce the gap between academic knowledge (explicit) and professional competency (tacit knowledge). This paper presents phase one of a multiphase study. A qualitative “systems based knowledge structure” of security domain categories has been conceptually mapped as a domain heuristic. The heuristic drew on research highlighting that experts have both richer depths …

Information Warfare: Time For A Redefinition, Patricia A H Williams

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

Information warfare has become an increasingly diverse field. The changes to its composition have been primarily driven by changes in technology and the resulting increased access to information. Further, it has been the progressively more diverse methods available for communication that has fuelled expanding applications for information warfare techniques into non-military environments. In order for younger generations of students to understand the place of information warfare in the larger security picture, there is a need to shift the emphasis from many of the military underpinnings to its relevance in modern society and the challenges in the commercial environment. This paper …

Universal Design, Education And Technology, Ciaran O'Leary, Damian Gordon Oct 2009

Universal Design, Education And Technology, Ciaran O'Leary, Damian Gordon

9th. IT & T Conference

Universal Design is an approach to design which insists upon the consideration of users with diverse levels of ability. Rather than representing a specialist approach to design, it is recognised that Universal Design results in a better design for all. Furthermore, by isolating design for disability as an independent topic in education, or ignoring it altogether, educators create an exclusionist perception of the role and place of individuals with disability in modern society. Modern education programmes which teach design skills are enhanced in quality by mainstreaming Universal Design as a core topic, permeating all that surrounds it. This paper describes …
