Deep Learning Approaches For Robust Heart And Respiratory Rate Estimation From Photoplethysmography, Pongpanut Osathitporn
Deep Learning Approaches For Robust Heart And Respiratory Rate Estimation From Photoplethysmography, Pongpanut Osathitporn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Respiratory rate (RR) is a vital sign widely used to assess patient health. However, estimating RR using photoplethysmography (PPG) signals remains challenging due to noise and signal variability. This paper proposes RRWaveNet, an end-to-end model based on multi-scale convolutional networks with residual connections for robust RR estimation from PPG signals. The model is evaluated on four public datasets BIDMC, CapnoBase, WESAD, and SensAI with optimal performance observed at a 32-second window. RRWaveNet achieves mean absolute errors of 1.66±1.01, 1.59±1.08, 1.92±0.96, and 1.23±0.61 breaths per minute, respectively, outperforming state-of-the-art methods across all datasets and the transfer learning using ICU datasets, which …

Hyperparameter Estimation For Sparse Bayesian Learning Models, Feng Yu, Lixin Shen, Guohui Song
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) models are extensively used in signal processing and machine learning for promoting sparsity through hierarchical priors. The hyperparameters in SBL models are crucial for the model’s performance, but they are often difficult to estimate due to the nonconvexity and the high-dimensionality of the associated objective function. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for hyperparameter estimation in SBL models, encompassing well-known algorithms such as the expectation-maximization, MacKay, and convex bounding algorithms. These algorithms are cohesively interpreted within an alternating minimization and linearization (AML) paradigm, distinguished by their unique linearized surrogate functions. Additionally, a novel algorithm within the …

While there are many different types of 3D Printing techniques, the most common type is Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), mainly due to its relatively low cost compared to other types. However, the technique also present a significant limitation: it tends to struggle with models that have overhanging parts. When a layer is extruded by an …

Surprisingly, the copyright status of generative AI works is pretty straight forward in the US: no one owns the copyright. According to the United States Copyright Office (2023), “copyright can protect only material that is the product of human creativity. Most fundamentally, the term ‘author,’ which is used in both the Constitution and the Copyright Act, excludes non-humans.” This concept is not new as previous court cases had already established this ruling. In the 1884 court case Burrow-Giles Lithographic Company v. Sarony, the defendant made copies of a photograph and claimed the author held no copyright since a machine, a …

Understanding the performance and validity of clustering algorithms is both challenging and crucial, particularly when clustering must be done online. Until recently, most validation methods have relied on batch calculation and have required considerable human expertise in their interpretation. Improving real-time performance and interpretability of cluster validation, therefore, continues to be an important theme in unsupervised learning. Building upon previous work on incremental cluster validity indices (iCVIs), this paper introduces the Meta- iCVI as a tool for explainable and concise labeling of partition quality in online clustering. Leveraging a time-series classifier and data-fusion techniques, the Meta- iCVI combines the outputs …

Secondary Organic Aerosols (SOAs) have been of interest to atmospheric chemists for their harmful effects on human health and implications for climate change. Here, we explore a likely system from the early stages of SOA formation. Using compu- tational methods, water nanoparticles with and without ions were simulated. We observe the effects of ions on the adsorption of SO2 on this system. SO2 in the at- mosphere is associated with greater production of SOAs, so its study is important to SOA formation. We find that the overall structure of water is the most important observable affecting the location of SO2 …

Language Models For Rare Disease Information Extraction: Empirical Insights And Model Comparisons, Shashank Gupta
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
End-to-end relation extraction (E2ERE) is a crucial task in natural language processing (NLP) that involves identifying and classifying semantic relationships between entities in text. This thesis compares three paradigms for end-to-end relation extraction (E2ERE) in biomedicine, focusing on rare diseases with discontinuous and nested entities. We evaluate Named Entity Recognition (NER) to Relation Extraction (RE) pipelines, sequence-to-sequence models, and generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) models using the RareDis information extraction dataset. Our findings indicate that pipeline models are the most effective, followed closely by sequence-to-sequence models. GPT models, despite having eight times as many parameters, perform worse than sequence-to-sequence models and …

Autonomous Shuttle Car Docking To A Continuous Miner Using Rgb-Depth Imagery, Sky Rose
Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering
A great deal of research is currently being conducted in automating mining equipment to improve worker health and safety and increase mine productivity. Significant progress has been made in some applications, e.g., autonomous haul trucks for surface mining. However, little progress has been made in autonomous face haulage in underground room-and pillar coal mines. Accordingly, this thesis addresses automating the operation of a shuttle car, focusing on positioning the shuttle car under the continuous miner coal-discharge conveyor during cutting and loading operations. The approach uses a stereo depth camera as the sensor, and machine-learning algorithms are used to identify various …
