Standard off-host tick census techniques are generally inefficient for larval stages. Also, such techniques expose the investigator to environmental hazards including tick bites. Mechanical devices are an option which were tested under field conditions for proof of concept and in side-by-side comparison to the standard techniques. The tick-vac collected more ticks than the legging technique, but with lower frequency of positive detections. It may have utility for sampling small areas, such as weedy corrals suspected of harboring ticks. Different configurations of tick-bots, robotic vehicles with flags, depended on intensive operator control to avoid obstacles, limiting operation to line of sight. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Ranked keyword search over encrypted data has been extensively studied in cloud computing as it enables data users to find the most relevant results quickly. However, existing ranked multi-keyword search solutions cannot achieve efficient ciphertext search and dynamic updates with forward security simultaneously. To solve the above problems, we first present a basic Machine Learning-based Ranked Keyword Search (ML-RKS) scheme in the static setting by using the k-means clustering algorithm and a balanced binary tree. ML-RKS reduces the search complexity without sacrificing the search accuracy, but is still vulnerable to forward security threats when applied in the dynamic setting. Then, …

The advent of smart digital devices and social media has shaped how consumers interact and transact with their financial institutions. Consumers increasingly want hyperpersonalised interactions that are more frequent and proactive, while financial institutions have a growing need to cater to consumers’ new demands. Financial institutions, such as banks, continuously adapt to the latest technologies to keep pace with evolving customer behaviours, needs, and experiences. One such emerging technology is artificial intelligence (AI). Many organisations realise the potential of AI; however, a human-centred AI system must be capable of understanding human characteristics and making decisions like humans. This paper presents …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
On-demand delivery services are three-sided markets that enable interactions between customers and suppliers with the help of crowdsourced drivers. Customers and suppliers may pay a commission to gain access to the service and drivers are granted a wage for providing their delivery service. This study characterizes the properties of three-side on-demand delivery markets, and proposes pricing strategies that enable the platform to manipulate the market towards profit or social welfare maximizing outcomes. We consider earning-sensitive independent drivers, price-and-time-sensitive customers, and price-sensitive suppliers. By assuming that all players are heterogeneous in their valuation of the service, we model their numbers as …

Machine learning has achieved a great success in the field of Android malware detection. In order to avoid being caught by these ML-based Android malware detection, malware authors are inclined to initiate adversarial sample attacks by tampering with mobile applications. Although machine learning has high capability, it lacks robustness against adversarial attacks. Currently, many of the adversarial attacking tools not only inject dead code into target applications, which can never be executed, but also require the injection of many benign features into a malicious APK. This can be easily noticeable by program analysis techniques. In this paper, we propose SeqAdver, …

Monadic Second-Order Incorrectness Logic For Gp 2, Christopher M. Poskitt, Detlef Plump
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Program logics typically reason about an over-approximation of program behaviour to prove the absence of bugs. Recently, program logics have been proposed that instead prove the presence of bugs by means of under-approximate reasoning, which has the promise of better scalability. In this paper, we present an under-approximate program logic for GP 2, a rule-based programming language for manipulating graphs. We define the proof rules of this program logic extensionally, i.e. independently of fixed assertion languages, then instantiate them with a morphism-based assertion language able to specify monadic second-order properties on graphs (e.g. path properties). We show how these proof …

BACKGROUND: Demand for head and neck cancer (HNC) radiotherapy data in algorithmic development has prompted increased image dataset sharing. Medical images must comply with data protection requirements so that re-use is enabled without disclosing patient identifiers. Defacing, i.e., the removal of facial features from images, is often considered a reasonable compromise between data protection and re-usability for neuroimaging data. While defacing tools have been developed by the neuroimaging community, their acceptability for radiotherapy applications have not been explored. Therefore, this study systematically investigated the impact of available defacing algorithms on HNC organs at risk (OARs).
METHODS: A publicly available dataset …

Nowadays, Vision Transformer (ViT) is widely utilized in various computer vision tasks, owing to its unique self-attention mechanism. However, the model architecture of ViT is complex and often challenging to comprehend, leading to a steep learning curve. ViT developers and users frequently encounter difficulties in interpreting its inner workings. Therefore, a visualization system is needed to assist ViT users in understanding its functionality. This paper introduces EL-VIT, an interactive visual analytics system designed to probe the Vision Transformer and facilitate a better understanding of its operations. The system consists of four layers of visualization views. The first three layers include …

There are known issues in authentic assessment design practices in digital education, which include the lack of freedom-of-choice, lack of focus on the multimodal nature of the digital process, and shortage of effective feedbacks. This study looks to identify an assessment design construct that overcomes these issues. Specifically, this study introduces an authentic assessment that combines gamification (G) with heutagogy (H) and multimodality (M) of assessments, building upon rich pool of multimodal data and learning analytics (A), known as GHMA. This is a skills-oriented assessment approach, where learners determine their own goals and create individualized multimodal artefacts, receive cognitive challenge …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While recommendation systems have been widely deployed, most existing approaches only capture user preferences in the , i.e., the user's general interest across all kinds of items. However, in real-world scenarios, user preferences could vary with items of different natures, which we call the . Both views are crucial for fully personalized recommendation, where an underpinning macro-view governs a multitude of finer-grained preferences in the micro-view. To model the dual views, in this paper, we propose a novel model called Dual-View Adaptive Recommendation (DVAR). In DVAR, we formulate the micro-view based on item categories, and further integrate it with the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Comments are valuable resources for the development, comprehension and maintenance of software. However, while changing code, developers sometimes neglect the evolution of the corresponding comments, resulting in obsolete comments. Such obsolete comments can mislead developers and introduce bugs in the future, and are therefore detrimental. We notice that by detecting and updating obsolete comments in time with code changes, obsolete comments can be effectively reduced and even avoided. We refer to this task as Just-In-Time (JIT) Obsolete Comment Detection and Update. In this work, we propose a two-stage framework named CUP2 (Two-stage Comment UPdater) to automate this task. CUP2 consists …

Contextual Path Retrieval: A Contextual Entity Relation Embedding-Based Approach, Pei-Chi Lo, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Contextual path retrieval (CPR) refers to the task of finding contextual path(s) between a pair of entities in a knowledge graph that explains the connection between them in a given context. For this novel retrieval task, we propose the Embedding-based Contextual Path Retrieval (ECPR) framework. ECPR is based on a three-component structure that includes a context encoder and path encoder that encode query context and path, respectively, and a path ranker that assigns a ranking score to each candidate path to determine the one that should be the contextual path. For context encoding, we propose two novel context encoding methods, …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Over the past few decades, a large number of graph layout techniques have been proposed for visualizing graphs from various domains. In this paper, we present a general framework, Taurus, for unifying popular techniques such as the spring-electrical model, stress model, and maxent-stress model. It is based on a unified force representation, which formulates most existing techniques as a combination of quotient-based forces that combine power functions of graph-theoretical and Euclidean distances. This representation enables us to compare the strengths and weaknesses of existing techniques, while facilitating the development of new methods. Based on this, we propose a new balanced …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the tremendous increase in video data size, search performance could be impacted significantly. Specifically, in an interactive system, a real-time system allows a user to browse, search and refine a query. Without a speedy system quickly, the main ingredient to engage a user to stay focused, an interactive system becomes less effective even with a sophisticated deep learning system. This paper addresses this challenge by leveraging approximate search, Bayesian inference, and reinforcement learning. For approximate search, we apply a hierarchical navigable small world, which is an efficient approximate nearest neighbor search algorithm. To quickly prune the search scope, we …

Dispatching vehicle fleets to serve flights is a key task in airport ground handling (AGH). Due to the notable growth of flights, it is challenging to simultaneously schedule multiple types of operations (services) for a large number of flights, where each type of operation is performed by one specific vehicle fleet. To tackle this issue, we first represent the operation scheduling as a complex vehicle routing problem and formulate it as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model. Then given the graph representation of the MILP model, we propose a learning assisted large neighborhood search (LNS) method using data generated …

UAV-assisted mobile edge computing (UAV-MEC) has been proposed to offer computing resources for smart devices and user equipment. UAV cluster aided MEC rather than one UAV-aided MEC as edge pool is the newest edge computing architecture. Unfortunately, the data packet exchange during edge computing within the UAV cluster hasn't received enough attention. UAVs need to collaborate for the wide implementation of MEC, relying on the gossip-based broadcast protocol. However, gossip has the problem of long propagation delay, where the forwarding probability and neighbors are two factors that are difficult to balance. The existing works improve gossip from only one factor, …
