A Machine-Verified Proof Of Linearizability For A Queue Algorithm, Ugur Yavuz May 2022

A Machine-Verified Proof Of Linearizability For A Queue Algorithm, Ugur Yavuz

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Proofs of linearizability are typically intricate and lengthy, and readers may find it difficult to verify their correctness. We present a unique technique for producing proofs of linearizability that are fully verifiable by a mechanical proof system, thereby eliminating the need for any manual verification. Specifically, we reduce the burden of proving linearizable object implementations correct to the proof of a particular invariant whose correctness can be shown inductively. Noting that the latter is a task that many proof systems (such as the TLA+ Proof System we chose to work with) are well-suited to handle, this technique allows us to …

Modeling Of Cns Cancer With A Focus On The Immune Component, Daniel Zamler May 2022

Modeling Of Cns Cancer With A Focus On The Immune Component, Daniel Zamler

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The knowledge surrounding cancers of the central nervous system remains poorly developed, in particular with regard to the immune component. The works contained in this thesis look at craniopharyngioma, glioblastoma, and several forms of brain metastasis. While some attention is given to the tumor cells themselves, as well as the patient setting which these studies model, the immune component of disease progression and treatment plays a strong role in each and is the primary focus of the works contained.

Craniopharyngioma is a relatively rare tumor in adults. Although histologically benign, it can be locally aggressive and may require additional therapeutic …

A Method To Evaluate The Impact Of Assistive Displays On The Comfort And Safety Of Driving In Low Visibility Conditions, Hussain Talal Alatiyyah

Theses and Dissertations

Natural phenomena may affect car drivers in terms of having a clear view. It may hinder or distract the driver’s eyesight from essential objects, such as traffic signs, people, or other obstacles in the street. A poor view for a driver could cause accidents that lead to significant harm. Fog is one of these natural phenomena that could impact a driver’s concentration. This study aims to test a methodology for evaluating the use of an assistive computer display, especially in fog situations. An experiment is performed with participants who perform simulated driving under controlled fog conditions with or without an …

Automated Parallel Optimization Of Simulation Parameters Using Modified Nelder-Mead Simplex Algorithm, Erina Mills May 2022

Automated Parallel Optimization Of Simulation Parameters Using Modified Nelder-Mead Simplex Algorithm, Erina Mills

All Dissertations

Computational simulations used in many fields have parameters that define models that are used to evaluate simulated properties. When developing these models, the goal is to choose the parameters that best replicate a set of desired properties. Mathematical optimization methods can be used to optimize the simulation parameters by defining a function that uses simulation parameters as input and outputs a value describing how well a set of experimental properties are reproduced.

Because simulated properties are often calculated using stochastic sampling methods, this optimization involves an objective function that is noisy and expensive to evaluate. Also, optimization of the simulation …

Does This Apply To Me? An Empirical Study Of Technical Context In Stack Overflow, Akalanka Galappaththi, Sarah Nadi, Christoph Treude May 2022

Does This Apply To Me? An Empirical Study Of Technical Context In Stack Overflow, Akalanka Galappaththi, Sarah Nadi, Christoph Treude

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stack Overflow has become an essential technical resource for developers. However, given the vast amount of knowledge available on Stack Overflow, finding the right information that is relevant for a given task is still challenging, especially when a developer is looking for a solution that applies to their specific requirements or technology stack. Clearly marking answers with their technical context, i.e., the information that characterizes the technologies and assumptions needed for this answer, is potentially one way to improve navigation. However, there is no information about how often such context is mentioned, and what kind of information it might offer. …

Structure-Aware Visualization Retrieval, Haotian Li, Yong Wang, Wu Aoyu, Huan Wei, Huamin Qu May 2022

Structure-Aware Visualization Retrieval, Haotian Li, Yong Wang, Wu Aoyu, Huan Wei, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the wide usage of data visualizations, a huge number of Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG)-based visualizations have been created and shared online. Accordingly, there has been an increasing interest in exploring how to retrieve perceptually similar visualizations from a large corpus, since it can beneft various downstream applications such as visualization recommendation. Existing methods mainly focus on the visual appearance of visualizations by regarding them as bitmap images. However, the structural information intrinsically existing in SVG-based visualizations is ignored. Such structural information can delineate the spatial and hierarchical relationship among visual elements, and characterize visualizations thoroughly from a new perspective. …

Exais: Executable Ai Semantics, Richard Schumi, Jun Sun May 2022

Exais: Executable Ai Semantics, Richard Schumi, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Neural networks can be regarded as a new programming paradigm, i.e., instead of building ever-more complex programs through (often informal) logical reasoning in the programmers' mind, complex 'AI' systems are built by optimising generic neural network models with big data. In this new paradigm, AI frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch play a key role, which is as essential as the compiler for traditional programs. It is known that the lack of a proper semantics for programming languages (such as C), i.e., a correctness specification for compilers, has contributed to many problematic program behaviours and security issues. While it is …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

People engage in different activities while eating alone, such as watching television or scrolling through social media on their phones. However, the impacts of these visual contents on human cognitive processes, particularly related to flavor perception and its attributes, are still not thoroughly explored. This paper presents a user study to evaluate the influence of six different types of video content (including nature, cooking, and a new food video genre known as mukbang) on people’s flavor perceptions in terms of taste sensations, liking, and emotions while eating plain white rice. Our findings revealed that the participants’ flavor perceptions are augmented …

Probabilistic Path Prioritization For Hybrid Fuzzing, Lei Zhao, Pengcheng Cao, Yue Duan, Heng Yin, Jifeng Xuan May 2022

Probabilistic Path Prioritization For Hybrid Fuzzing, Lei Zhao, Pengcheng Cao, Yue Duan, Heng Yin, Jifeng Xuan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hybrid fuzzing that combines fuzzing and concolic execution has become an advanced technique for software vulnerability detection. Based on the observation that fuzzing and concolic execution are complementary in nature, state-of-the-art hybrid fuzzing systems deploy “optimal concolic testing” and “demand launch” strategies. Although these ideas sound intriguing, we point out several fundamental limitations in them, due to unrealistic or oversimplified assumptions. Further, we propose a novel “discriminative dispatch” strategy and design a probabilistic hybrid fuzzing system to better utilize the capability of concolic execution. Specifically, we design a Monte Carlo-based probabilistic path prioritization model to quantify each path’s difficulty, and …

Adaptive Task Planning For Large-Scale Robotized Warehouses, Dingyuan Shi, Yongxin Tong, Zimu Zhou, Ke Xu, Wenzhe Tan, Hongbo Li May 2022

Adaptive Task Planning For Large-Scale Robotized Warehouses, Dingyuan Shi, Yongxin Tong, Zimu Zhou, Ke Xu, Wenzhe Tan, Hongbo Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Robotized warehouses are deployed to automatically distribute millions of items brought by the massive logistic orders from e-commerce. A key to automated item distribution is to plan paths for robots, also known as task planning, where each task is to deliver racks with items to pickers for processing and then return the rack back. Prior solutions are unfit for large-scale robotized warehouses due to the inflexibility to time-varying item arrivals and the low efficiency for high throughput. In this paper, we propose a new task planning problem called TPRW, which aims to minimize the end-to-end makespan that incorporates the entire …

Feasibility Studies In Indoor Localization Through Intelligent Conversation, Sheshadri Smitha, Linus Cheng, Kotaro Hara

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a model to achieve human localization in indoor environments through intelligent conversation between users and an agent. We investigated the feasibility of conversational localization by conducting two studies. First, we conducted a Wizard-of-Oz study with N = 7 participants and studied the feasibility of localizing users through conversation. We identified challenges posed by users’ language and behavior. Second, we collected N = 800 user descriptions of virtual indoor locations from N = 80 Amazon Mechanical Turk participants to analyze user language. We explored the effects of conversational agent behavior and observed that people describe indoor locations differently based …

Deep Depression Prediction On Longitudinal Data Via Joint Anomaly Ranking And Classification, Guansong Pang, Ngoc Thien Anh Pham, Emma Baker, Rebecca Bentley, Anton Van Den Hengel

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A wide variety of methods have been developed for identifying depression, but they focus primarily on measuring the degree to which individuals are suffering from depression currently. In this work we explore the possibility of predicting future depression using machine learning applied to longitudinal socio-demographic data. In doing so we show that data such as housing status, and the details of the family environment, can provide cues for predicting future psychiatric disorders. To this end, we introduce a novel deep multi-task recurrent neural network to learn time-dependent depression cues. The depression prediction task is jointly optimized with two auxiliary anomaly …

Smile: Secure Memory Introspection For Live Enclave, Lei Zhou, Xuhua Ding, Zhang Fengwei May 2022

Smile: Secure Memory Introspection For Live Enclave, Lei Zhou, Xuhua Ding, Zhang Fengwei

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

SGX enclaves prevent external software from accessing their memory. This feature conflicts with legitimate needs for enclave memory introspection, e.g., runtime stack collection on an enclave under a return-oriented-programming attack. We propose SMILE for enclave owners to acquire live enclave contents with the assistance of a semi-trusted agent installed by the host platform’s vendor as a plug-in of the System Management Interrupt handler. SMILE authenticates the enclave under introspection without trusting the kernel nor depending on the SGX attestation facility. SMILE is enclave security preserving as breaking of SMILE does not undermine enclave security. It allows a cloud server to …

Xai4fl: Enhancing Spectrum-Based Fault Localization With Explainable Artificial Intelligence, Ratnadira Widyasari, Gede Artha Azriadi Prana, Stefanus Agus Haryono, Yuan Tian, Hafil Noer Zachiary, David Lo May 2022

Xai4fl: Enhancing Spectrum-Based Fault Localization With Explainable Artificial Intelligence, Ratnadira Widyasari, Gede Artha Azriadi Prana, Stefanus Agus Haryono, Yuan Tian, Hafil Noer Zachiary, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Manually finding the program unit (e.g., class, method, or statement) responsible for a fault is tedious and time-consuming. To mitigate this problem, many fault localization techniques have been proposed. A popular family of such techniques is spectrum-based fault localization (SBFL), which takes program execution traces (spectra) of failed and passed test cases as input and applies a ranking formula to compute a suspiciousness score for each program unit. However, most existing SBFL techniques fail to consider two facts: 1) not all failed test cases contribute equally to a considered fault(s), and 2) program units collaboratively contribute to the failure/pass of …

Competition And Third-Party Platform-Integration In Ride-Sourcing Markets, Yaqian Zhou, Hai Yang, Jintao Ke, Hai Wang, Xinwei Li May 2022

Competition And Third-Party Platform-Integration In Ride-Sourcing Markets, Yaqian Zhou, Hai Yang, Jintao Ke, Hai Wang, Xinwei Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, some third-party integrators attempt to integrate the ride services offered by multiple independent ride-sourcing platforms. Accordingly, passengers can request ride through the integrators and receive ride service from any one of the ride-sourcing platforms. This novel business model, termed as third-party platform-integration in this work, has potentials to alleviate market fragmentation cost resulting from demand splitting among multiple platforms. Although most existing studies focus on operation strategies for one single monopolist platform, much less is known about the competition and platform-integration and their implications on operation strategy and system efficiency. In this work, we propose mathematical models to describe …

On Recruiting Experienced Github Contributors For Interviews And Surveys On Prolific, Felipe Ebert, Alexander Serebrenik, Christoph Treude, Nicole Novielli, Fernando Castor

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software engineering researchers have been using general purpose online tools for crowd-sourcing for quite some time. Those tools can be useful to recruit participants for research studies as they are paid for their time. However, those tools should be used carefully. In this paper, we have described the issues we faced when recruiting participants on Prolific. We used Prolific to recruit open-source developers with experience in submitting and reviewing pull requests (PRs). However, we did not succeed in obtaining valid participants for either the interview or the survey, which led us to change the approach of our study and not …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the periodic goals of reaching carbon emission peak before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060 (“dual carbon” goals), China shows its unprecedented determination to coal power phaseout. This research takes Jilin Province to showcase possible pathways of coal power units’ phaseout on provincial level. We set up four different coal power phaseout scenarios, under which their transition cost and effectiveness would be calculated, respectively. In terms of natural resource endowment and electricity demand, Jilin Province would achieve a complete coal power phaseout by 2045 or even by 2040. However, after assessing the effectiveness of power transition under the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to address social, economic, and environmental challenges. However, effective use of AI in organizations relies on the establishment of an AI governance framework. Although existing studies have discussed a variety of issues raised by AI-based systems and proposed AI governance frameworks to overcome those issues, organizations face challenges in adopting AI governance. Informed by innovation diffusion theory, this research evaluates the impact of internal and external influences on AI governance adoption between highly regulated and less regulated industries. We also assess the effect of adopting AI governance on organizational performance. Findings from this study …

Lexglue: A Benchmark Dataset For Legal Language Understanding In English, Ilias Chalkidis, Abhik Jana, Dirk Hartung, Michael Bommarito, Ion Androutsopoulos, Daniel Katz, Nikolaos Aletras

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Lawsandtheirinterpretations, legal arguments and agreements are typically expressed in writing, leading to the production of vast corpora of legal text. Their analysis, which is at the center of legal practice, becomes increasingly elaborate as these collections grow in size. Natural language understanding (NLU) technologies can be a valuable tool to support legal practitioners in these endeavors. Their usefulness, however, largely depends on whether current state-of-the-art models can generalize across various tasks in the legal domain. To answer this currently open question, we introduce the Legal General Language Understanding Evaluation (LexGLUE) benchmark, a collection of datasets for evaluating model performance across …

Detecting False Alarms From Automatic Static Analysis Tools: How Far Are We?, Hong Jin Kang, Khai Loong Aw, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatic static analysis tools (ASATs), such as Findbugs, have a high false alarm rate. The large number of false alarms produced poses a barrier to adoption. Researchers have proposed the use of machine learning to prune false alarms and present only actionable warnings to developers. The state-of-the-art study has identified a set of “Golden Features” based on metrics computed over the characteristics and history of the file, code, and warning. Recent studies show that machine learning using these features is extremely effective and that they achieve almost perfect performance. We perform a detailed analysis to better understand the strong performance …

Practitioners' Expectations On Automated Code Comment Generation, Xing Hu, Xin Xia, David Lo, Zhiyuan Wan, Qiuyuan Chen, Thomas Zimmermann May 2022

Practitioners' Expectations On Automated Code Comment Generation, Xing Hu, Xin Xia, David Lo, Zhiyuan Wan, Qiuyuan Chen, Thomas Zimmermann

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Good comments are invaluable assets to software projects, as they help developers understand and maintain projects. However, due to some poor commenting practices, comments are often missing or inconsistent with the source code. Software engineering practitioners often spend a significant amount of time and effort reading and understanding programs without or with poor comments. To counter this, researchers have proposed various techniques to automatically generate code comments in recent years, which can not only save developers time writing comments but also help them better understand existing software projects. However, it is unclear whether these techniques can alleviate comment issues and …

Missing Samples Reconstruction Using An Efficient And Robust Instantaneous Frequency Estimation Algorithm, Sadiq Ali, Nabeel Ali Khan May 2022

Missing Samples Reconstruction Using An Efficient And Robust Instantaneous Frequency Estimation Algorithm, Sadiq Ali, Nabeel Ali Khan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In order to recover missing samples in a nonstationary signal, this paper employs a time-signal analysis and filtering method. The instantaneous frequency of a multicomponent signal is first estimated by employing a robust and computationally efficient method. Then the time-frequency filtering is performed using a dechirping operation to recover missing samples. These steps are repeated until convergence. The proposed method achieves better performance than the state of art methods both in terms of the accuracy of the recovered signal and computational efficiency.

Binary Flower Pollination Algorithm Based User Scheduling For Multiuser Mimo Systems, Jyoti Mohanty, Prabina Pattanayak, Arnab Nandi, Krishna Lal Baishnab, Fazal Ahmed Talukdar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this article, a multiuser (MU) multiinput multioutput (MIMO) system is considered, which is essential to support a huge number of subscribers without consuming extra bandwidth or power. Dirty paper coding (DPC) for MU MIMO channel achieves the peak sum-rate for the MU multiple antenna system at the cost of high computational complexity. Both user and antenna scheduling with a population based meta-heuristic algorithm, i.e. binary flower pollination algorithm (binary FPA) has been demonstrated in this article to achieve system sum-rate comparable to DPC with very less computational complexity and time complexity. Moreover, binary FPA shows a significant improvement in …

Multimicrogrid system is a novel notion in modern power systems as a result of developing renewable-based generation units and accordingly microgrids in distribution networks. Their energy management might be challenging due to presence of independent units. Thus, in this paper, a decentralized method for energy management of multimicrogrid systems has been proposed. Decentralized methods can enhance the privacy of users and reduce the burden of calculations. Alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is selected as a decentralized approach which has the capability of breaking problems with complicating constraints in order to facilitate the solving process. Using decentralized approach not only …

Estimation Of Mode Shape In Power Systems Under Ambient Conditions Using Advanced Signal Processing Approach, Rahul S, Sunitha R May 2022

Estimation Of Mode Shape In Power Systems Under Ambient Conditions Using Advanced Signal Processing Approach, Rahul S, Sunitha R

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a dynamic approach for the monitoring and estimation of electromechanical oscillatory modes in the power system in real time with less computational burden. Extensive implementation of phasor measurement units (PMU) and the utilization of advanced signal processing techniques help in identifying the dynamic behaviors of oscillatory modes. Conventional nonstationary analysis techniques are computationally weak to handle a larger quantity of data in real-time. This research utilizes the variational mode decomposition (VMD) for signal decomposition, which is highly tolerant to noise and computationally more robust. The predefined parameters of the VMD process are assigned using FFT analysis of …
