The Communicative Effects Of Anonymity Online: A Natural Language Analysis Of The Faceless, Caleb Johnson
The Communicative Effects Of Anonymity Online: A Natural Language Analysis Of The Faceless, Caleb Johnson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
An ever-increasing number of Americans have an active social media
presence online. As of March 2020, an estimated 79% of Americans were active
monthly users of some sort. Many of these online platforms allow users to
operate anonymously which could potentially lead to shifts in communicative
behavior. I first discuss my compilation process of the Twitter Anonymity
Dataset (TAD), a human-classified dataset of 100,000 Twitter accounts that are
categorized by their level of identifiability to their real-world agent. Next, I
investigate some of the structural differences between the classification levels
and employ a variety of Natural Language Processing models and …

The resurgence of interest in Kabbalistic diagrams (Segol, Busi, Chajes) raises the question of how diagrams function in religious symbolism. This question can be approached via methods used in the graphical modeling of data. Specifically, graph theory lets one define a repertoire of candidate structures that can be applied not only to quantitative data, but also to symbols consisting of qualitative components. A graph is a set of nodes and links between nodes. What nodes and links are is unspecified in this definition. The Kabbalistic Ilan is – partially – a graph. The Sefirot are its nodes; the paths connecting …
Seeking Sustainability For Computing, Stefan A. Robila
Seeking Sustainability For Computing, Stefan A. Robila
Sustainability Seminar Series
The talk will provide two perspectives on how sustainability is considered in computing. First, the impact computing has on energy consumption and on the environment will be discussed through the prism of past and prior research projects. Computing currently drives advances in all areas of science and engineering, generates efficiencies in industries, and dominates the creation and delivery of entertainment. Computing is also a significant consumer of energy accounting for 3% of the global usage. Data centers account of a third of this consumption, yet also provide a case where efficiencies in system design have limited the energy use increase …
Evaluation Of Algorithms For Randomizing Key Item Locations In Game Worlds, Caleb Johnson
Evaluation Of Algorithms For Randomizing Key Item Locations In Game Worlds, Caleb Johnson
LSU Master's Theses
In the past few years, game randomizers have become increasingly popular. In general, a game randomizer takes some aspect of a game that is usually static and shuffles it somehow. In particular, in this paper we will discuss the type of randomizer that shuffles the locations of items in a game where certain key items are needed to traverse the game world and access some of these locations. Examples of these types of games include series such as The Legend of Zelda and Metroid.
In order to accomplish this shuffling in such a way that the player is able to …

Exploring The Use Of Neural Transformers For Psycholinguistics, Antonio Laverghetta Jr.
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Deep learning has the potential to help solve numerous problems in cognitive science andeducation, by providing us a way to model the cognitive profiles of individual people. If this were possible, it would allow us to design targeted tests and suggest specific remediation based on each individual’s needs. On the flip side, employing techniques from psychology can give us insight into the underlying skillsets neural networks have acquired during training, addressing the interpretability concern. This thesis explores these ideas in the context of transformer language models, which have achieved state-of-the-art results on virtually every natural language processing (NLP) task. First, …

As machine learning becomes ubiquitous, the need to deploy models on real-time, embedded systems will become increasingly critical. This is especially true for deep learning solutions, whose large models pose interesting challenges for target architectures at the “edge” that are resource-constrained. The realization of machine learning, and deep learning, is being driven by the availability of specialized hardware, such as system-on-chip solutions, which provide some alleviation of constraints. Equally important, however, are the operating systems that run on this hardware, and specifically the ability to leverage commercial real-time operating systems which, unlike general purpose operating systems such as Linux, can …

Mach-Zehnder Quantum Interference Rules In Hydrocarbons With Substituents, Alaa Al-Jobory, Zainelabideen Y. Mijbil
Mach-Zehnder Quantum Interference Rules In Hydrocarbons With Substituents, Alaa Al-Jobory, Zainelabideen Y. Mijbil
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
We have investigated the conditions of quantum interferences in hydrocarbons with substituents using density functional theory and tight binding approximation combined with non-equilibrium Green’s function technique. The chosen model systems, namely benzene and tripyridyl–triazine molecules, have elucidated three prominent rules. The ‘first rule’ is the occurrence of inevitable, destructive quantum interference when 1,3-benzene ring incorporates single substituent at the fifth site. The ‘second rule’ is the chaotic occurrence of quantum interferences due the position and/or type of the substituents. The ‘third rule’: the substituents decrease (increase) the probability of destructive (constructive) interferences

Multi-Step-Ahead Exchange Rate Forecasting For South Asian Countries Using Multi-Verse Optimized Multiplicative Functional Link Neural Networks, Kishore Kumar Sahu, Sarat Chandra Nayak, Himansu Sekhar Behera
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
The dynamic nonlinearity approach, coupled with the exchange rate data series, makes its future predictions difficult. Sophisticated methods are highly desired for effective prediction of such data. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have shown their ability to model and predict such data. This article presents a multi-verse optimizer (MVO) based multiplicative functional link neural network (MV-MFLN) model to forecast the exchange rate data. Functional link neural network (FLN) makes use of functional expansion for input data with a fewer number of adjustable neuron weights, which makes it capable of learning the uncertainties accompanying the exchange rate data. In contrast to the …

Abstract
In this study, Natural Bonding Orbitals (NBOs) were applied to isatin, 5‑fluoroisatin, 5‑chloroisatin, 5‑methylisatin and 5‑methoxyisatin using the Lee-Yang-Parr correlation functional B3LYP with 6‑311++G(2d,2p) basis set. Natural bonding analysis was performed to consider the transfer interactions of intra-molecular charge, pre-hybridization and electron density within the isatin, 5‑fluoroisatin, 5‑chloroisatin, 5‑methylisatin and 5‑methoxyisatin. In natural bonding orbital analysis, the wave functions of the electrons were explicated in sets of occupied Lewis type terms, (bonds or lone pairs) and sets of unoccupied non‑Lewis (anti‑bond and Rydberg) localized natural bonding orbitals. The electron density between these orbitals was correlated to stabilize the interaction …

Background
In order to be prepared for an infectious disease outbreak it is important to know what interventions will or will not have an impact on reducing the outbreak. While some interventions might have a greater effect in mitigating an outbreak, others might only have a minor effect but all interventions will have a cost in implementation. Estimating the effectiveness of an intervention can be done using computational modelling. In particular, comparing the results of model runs with an intervention in place to control runs where no interventions were used can help to determine what interventions will have the greatest …

Deep learning models suffer from opaqueness. For Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), current research strategies for explaining models focus on the target classes within the associated training dataset. As a result, the understanding of hidden feature map activations is limited by the discriminative knowledge gleaned during training. The aim of our work is to explain and expand CNNs models via the mirroring or alignment of the network to an external knowledge base. This will allow us to give a semantic context or label for each visual feature. Using the resultant aligned embedding space, we can match CNN feature activations to nodes …
Quantum Simulation Of Schrödinger's Equation, Mohamed Eltohfa
Quantum Simulation Of Schrödinger's Equation, Mohamed Eltohfa
Capstone and Graduation Projects
Quantum computing is one of the promising active areas in physics research. This is because of the potential of quantum algorithms to outperform their classical counterparts. Grover’s search algorithm has a quadratic speed-up compared to the classical linear search. The quantum simulation of Schrödinger’s equation has an exponential memory save-up compared to the classical simulation. In this thesis, the ideas and tools of quantum computing are reviewed. Grover’s algorithm is studied and simulated as an example. Using the Qiskit quantum computing library, a code to simulate Schrödinger’s equation for a particle in one dimension is developed, simulated locally, and run …

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience lifelong struggles with both chronic and acute pain, often requiring medical interventMaion. Pain can be managed with medications, but dosages must balance the goal of pain mitigation against the risks of tolerance, addiction and other adverse effects. Setting appropriate dosages requires knowledge of a patient's subjective pain, but collecting pain reports from patients can be difficult for clinicians and disruptive for patients, and is only possible when patients are awake and communicative. Here we investigate methods for estimating SCD patients' pain levels indirectly using vital signs that are routinely collected and documented in …

A Dynamic Programming Approach To Determine Optimum Modularity Level In Industrial Packaging, Marshal Louie, Kumar B
Journal of Applied Packaging Research
Modular packaging facilitate customization for accommodating variable product sizes in a product family. When determining package sizes for product variability, packaging engineers does not find difficulty to determine package dimension for less product variety whereas if the product variety is more, then determining the dimension of modular package involves complex decision-making and time-consuming process to find the optimal solution. This in turn directly impacts the overall lead time of the supply chain. Thus, in this paper a dynamic programming is developed to determine the quantity and dimension of modular packages for every demand of assorted products sizes. The program helps …

In this paper; a novel self-optimizing water level monitoring methodology is proposed for smart city applications. Considering system maintenance; the efficiency of power consumption and accuracy will be important for Internet of Things (IoT) devices and systems. A multi-step measurement mechanism and power self-charging process are proposed in this study for improving the efficiency of a device for water level monitoring applications. The proposed methodology improved accuracy by 0.16–0.39% by moving the sensor to estimate the distance relative to different locations. Additional power is generated by executing a multi-step measurement while the power self-optimizing process used dynamically adjusts the settings …
The Dna Cloud: Is It Alive?, Theodoros Bargiotas
The Dna Cloud: Is It Alive?, Theodoros Bargiotas
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this analysis, I will firstly be presenting the current knowledge concerning the materiality of the internet based Cloud, which I will henceforth be referring to as simply the Cloud. For organisation purposes I have created two umbrella categories under which I place the ongoing research in the field. Scholars have been addressing the issue of Cloud materiality through broadly two prisms: sociological materiality and geopolitical materiality. The literature of course deals with the intricacies of the Cloud based on its present ferromagnetic storage functionality. However, developments in synthetic biology have caused private tech companies and University spin-offs to flirt …

Diverse computer-aided diagnosis systems based on convolutional neural networks were applied to automate the detection of myocardial infarction (MI) found in electrocardiogram (ECG) for early diagnosis and prevention. However; issues; particularly overfitting and underfitting; were not being taken into account. In other words; it is unclear whether the network structure is too simple or complex. Toward this end; the proposed models were developed by starting with the simplest structure: a multi-lead features-concatenate narrow network (N-Net) in which only two convolutional layers were included in each lead branch. Additionally; multi-scale features-concatenate networks (MSN-Net) were also implemented where larger features were being …
An Efficient Algorithm To Test Potential Bipartiteness Of Graphical Degree Sequences, Kai Wang
An Efficient Algorithm To Test Potential Bipartiteness Of Graphical Degree Sequences, Kai Wang
Theory & Applications of Graphs
As a partial answer to a question of Rao, a deterministic and customizable efficient algorithm is presented to test whether an arbitrary graphical degree sequence has a bipartite realization. The algorithm can be configured to run in polynomial time, at the expense of possibly producing an erroneous output on some ``yes'' instances but with very low error rate.

Reporting granular energy usage data from smart meters to power grid enables effective power distribution by smart grid. Demand Response (DR) mechanism incentivize users towards efficient use of energy. However, consumer’s energy consumption pattern can reveal personal and sensitive information regarding their lifestyle. Therefore, to ensure users privacy, differentially distributed noise is added to the original data. This technique comes with a trade off between privacy of the consumer versus utility of the data in terms of providing services like billing, Demand Response schemes, and Load Monitoring. In this paper, we propose a technique - Differential Privacy with Noise Cancellation …

This project proposes the use of asynchronous narrative mechanics and dynamic elements of gameplay to further the player’s sense of interaction with characters and the environment of the game, inspired by interactive theatre performances such as Sleep No More. The player plants seeds in a garden which is maintained by several Non-Playable Characters, influencing both the environment and the narrative. Scenes occur according to the state of the garden, but do not wait for the player to be present. Plants grow and wilt as time passes. Sometimes the player cedes control as the characters tend to or cut down plants, …
