Gene expression analysis plays a significant role for providing molecular insights in cancer. Various genetic and epigenetic factors (being dealt under multi-omics) affect gene expression giving rise to cancer phenotypes. A recent growth in understanding of multi-omics seems to provide a resource for integration in interdisciplinary biology since they altogether can draw the comprehensive picture of an organism's developmental and disease biology in cancers. Such large scale multi-omics data can be obtained from public consortium like The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and several other platforms. Integrating these multi-omics data from varied platforms is still challenging due to high noise and …

We introduce kernels with random Fourier features in the meta-learning framework for few-shot learning. We propose meta variational random features (MetaVRF) to learn adaptive kernels for the base-learner, which is developed in a latent variable model by treating the random feature basis as the latent variable. We formulate the optimization of MetaVRF as a variational inference problem by deriving an evidence lower bound under the meta-learning framework. To incorporate shared knowledge from related tasks, we propose a context inference of the posterior, which is established by an LSTM architecture. The LSTMbased inference network effectively integrates the context information of previous …
Grading Homeworks, Verifying Code: How Thorough Should The Feedback Be?, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Grading Homeworks, Verifying Code: How Thorough Should The Feedback Be?, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In the ideal world, we should assign many homeworks and give a thorough feedback for each homework. However, in reality, the instructor's time is limited, so we can either assign few homeworks and give a detailed feed back for all of them, or we can assign many homeworks, but give a less thorough feedback. What is the optimal thoroughness? A similar question can be raised for code verification: what is the optimal amount of feedback that should be provided to each programmer? In this paper, we provide answers to these questions.
Why Majority Rule Does Not Work In Quantum Computing: A Pedagogical Explanation, Oscar Galindo, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Why Majority Rule Does Not Work In Quantum Computing: A Pedagogical Explanation, Oscar Galindo, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
To increase the reliability of computations result, a natural idea is to use duplication: we let several computers independently perform the same computations, and then, if their results differ, we select the majority's result. Reliability is an important issue for quantum computing as well, since in quantum physics, all the processes are probabilistic, so there is always a probability that the result will be wrong. It thus seems natural to use the same majority rule for quantum computing as well. However, it is known that for general quantum computing, this scheme does not work. In this paper, we provide a …
Adversarial Teaching Approach To Cybersecurity: A Mathematical Model Explains Why It Works Well, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Adversarial Teaching Approach To Cybersecurity: A Mathematical Model Explains Why It Works Well, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Teaching cybersecurity means teaching all possible ways how software can be attacked -- and how to fight such attacks. From the usual pedagogical viewpoint, a natural idea seems to be to teach all these ways one by one. Surprisingly, a completely different approach works even better: when the class is divided into sparring mini-teams that try their best to attack each other and defend from each other. In spite of the lack of thoroughness, this approach generates good specialists -- but why? In this paper, by analyzing a simple mathematical model of this situation, we explain why this approach work …

Let Us Use Negative Examples In Regression-Type Problems Too, Jonatan Contreras, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Martine Ceberio
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, we need to reconstruct the dependence between quantities x and y based on several situations in which we know both x and y values. Such problems are known as regression problems. Usually, this reconstruction is based on positive examples, when we know y -- at least, with some accuracy. However, in addition, we often also know some examples in which we have negative information about y -- e.g., we know that y does not belong to a certain interval. In this paper, we show how such negative examples can be used to make the solution …
Enumerative Branching With Less Repetition, Thiago Serra
Enumerative Branching With Less Repetition, Thiago Serra
Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations
We can compactly represent large sets of solutions for problems with discrete decision variables by using decision diagrams. With them, we can efficiently identify optimal solutions for different objective functions. In fact, a decision diagram naturally arises from the branch-and-bound tree that we could use to enumerate these solutions if we merge nodes from which the same solutions are obtained on the remaining variables. However, we would like to avoid the repetitive work of finding the same solutions from branching on different nodes at the same level of that tree. Instead, we would like to explore just one of these …

Rrsds: Towards A Robot-Ready Spoken Dialogue System, Casey Kennington, Daniele Moro, Lucas Marchand, Jake Carns, David Mcneill
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Spoken interaction with a physical robot requires a dialogue system that is modular, multimodal, distributive, incremental and temporally aligned. In this demo paper, we make significant contributions towards fulfilling these requirements by expanding upon the ReTiCo incremental framework. We outline the incremental and multimodal modules and how their computation can be distributed. We demonstrate the power and flexibility of our robot-ready spoken dialogue system to be integrated with almost any robot.

Semantics With Feeling: Emotions For Abstract Embedding, Affect For Concrete Grounding, Daniele Moro, Gerardo Caracas, David Mcneill, Casey Kennington
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
An important yet underexplored aspect of meaning in both distributional and grounded models of semantics is emotion. In this paper, we explore how emotion can be predicted from descriptions of robot behaviors represented with embeddings. We then compare this approach with a grounded model that maps corresponding robot behaviors represented as internal states to the same emotion labels and discover comparable results. We then take the predictions from the second model and use them as a proxy for concrete affect (as opposed to abstract emotion) and use this derived affect to ground a semantic classifier in a retrieval task and …
How To Make Sure That Robot's Behavior Is Human-Like, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Laxman Bokati
How To Make Sure That Robot's Behavior Is Human-Like, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Laxman Bokati
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many applications -- e.g., in health care -- it is desirable to make robots behave human-like. This means, in particular, that robotic control should not be optimal, it should be similar to human (suboptimal) behavior. People's decisions are based on bounded rationality: since we cannot compute an optimal solution for all possible situations, we divide situations into groups and come up with a solution appropriate for each group. What is optimal here is the division into groups. It is therefore desirable to implement a similar algorithm for robots. To help with such algorithms, we provide techniques that help optimally …
Human Behavior Is A Significant Flaw In Maintaining Cyber Security, Elizabeth Jackson
Human Behavior Is A Significant Flaw In Maintaining Cyber Security, Elizabeth Jackson
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
Human behavior and data security utilization must be intertwined; in order to mitigate the negative effects of cyber attacks. No consumer wants their data hacked, breached, stolen, shared or wiped out. It is imperative to survey the type of education is needed to keep users safe and interested in securing their data. This can be done by simply seeking out the consumer's view of data security. The information obtained would allow the cybersecurity community to offer a simple way for consumers to protect their mobile data. There is a constant interaction between human behavior and the need for increased data …

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
During my undergraduate research, I spent my time working with a home automation program known as Helion, specifically, its Snapshot module. I was tasked with learning new material and completing part of the webpage that were unfinished. I also had to get a little creative when working on a design that users could find appealing. There were times I found working on Helion difficult but overall, working with Helion’s Snapshot Module is something that will help me improve with my undergraduate studies.
Deep Learning For Real-World Object Detection, Xiongwei Wu
Deep Learning For Real-World Object Detection, Xiongwei Wu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Despite achieving significant progresses, most existing detectors are designed to detect objects in academic contexts but consider little in real-world scenarios. In real-world applications, the scale variance of objects can be significantly higher than objects in academic contexts; In addition, existing methods are designed for achieving localization with relatively low precision, however more precise localization is demanded in real-world scenarios; Existing methods are optimized with huge amount of annotated data, but in certain real-world scenarios, only a few samples are available. In this dissertation, we aim to explore novel techniques to address these research challenges to make object detection algorithms …

Virtual Reality - Vr, Daors Islami
Virtual Reality - Vr, Daors Islami
Theses and Dissertations
The definition of virtual reality or a computer game VR comes, naturally, from the definitions for both ‘virtual’ and ‘reality’. The definition of ‘virtual’ is near and reality is what we experience as citizenry. So the term ‘virtual reality’ basically means ‘near-reality’. This could, of course, mean anything but it always refers to a selected sort of reality emulation. Everything that we all know about our reality comes by way of our senses. In other words, our entire experience of reality is just a mixture of sensory information and our brains sense-making mechanisms for that information. It stands to reason …
Distributed Adaptive State Estimation And Tracking Scheme For Nonlinear Systems Using Active Passive Sensor Networks, Akhilesh Raj, S. Jagannathan, Tansel Yucelen
Distributed Adaptive State Estimation And Tracking Scheme For Nonlinear Systems Using Active Passive Sensor Networks, Akhilesh Raj, S. Jagannathan, Tansel Yucelen
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper proposes a novel adaptive neural network (NN) based distributed state estimation scheme for a heterogeneous sensor network (HSN), to estimate the state vector of an unknown nonlinear process/target by using sensed output when the target input remains unknown. The active nodes in the HSN can sense the target output based on the detection range. By using a connected graph, the active nodes will communicate their estimated state vector from their adaptive NN observer to other passive nodes in the neighborhood that cannot sense the target, so that they can estimate the target state vector. Next, a subset of …

Tree-Augmented Cross-Modal Encoding For Complex-Query Video Retrieval, Xun Yang, Jianfeng Dong, Yixin Cao, Xun Wang, Meng Wang, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The rapid growth of user-generated videos on the Internet has intensified the need for text-based video retrieval systems. Traditional methods mainly favor the concept-based paradigm on retrieval with simple queries, which are usually ineffective for complex queries that carry far more complex semantics. Recently, embedding-based paradigm has emerged as a popular approach. It aims to map the queries and videos into a shared embedding space where semantically-similar texts and videos are much closer to each other. Despite its simplicity, it forgoes the exploitation of the syntactic structure of text queries, making it suboptimal to model the complex queries. To facilitate …
