Joint Lattice Of Reconstructability Analysis And Bayesian Network General Graphs, Marcus Harris, Martin Zwick
Joint Lattice Of Reconstructability Analysis And Bayesian Network General Graphs, Marcus Harris, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper integrates the structures considered in Reconstructability Analysis (RA) and those considered in Bayesian Networks (BN) into a joint lattice of probabilistic graphical models. This integration and associated lattice visualizations are done in this paper for four variables, but the approach can easily be expanded to more variables. The work builds on the RA work of Klir (1985), Krippendorff (1986), and Zwick (2001), and the BN work of Pearl (1985, 1987, 1988, 2000), Verma (1990), Heckerman (1994), Chickering (1995), Andersson (1997), and others. The RA four variable lattice and the BN four variable lattice partially overlap: there are ten …
Reconstructability Analysis And Its Occam Implementation, Martin Zwick
Reconstructability Analysis And Its Occam Implementation, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
This talk will describe Reconstructability Analysis (RA), a probabilistic graphical modeling methodology deriving from the 1960s work of Ross Ashby and developed in the systems community in the 1980s and afterwards. RA, based on information theory and graph theory, resembles and partially overlaps Bayesian networks (BN) and log-linear techniques, but also has some unique capabilities. (A paper explaining the relationship between RA and BN will be given in this special session.) RA is designed for exploratory modeling although it can also be used for confirmatory hypothesis testing. In RA modeling, one either predicts some DV from a set of IVs …

The seed oil of Carum Carvi has been reported to be antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperlipidemic, antidiabetic, and hepatoprotective. Methods: The antidiabetic potential of carveol was investigated by employing in-vitro, in-vivo, and in-silico approaches. Moreover, alpha-amylase inhibitory assay and an alloxan-induced diabetes model were used for in-vitro and in-vivo analysis, respectively. Results: Carveol showed its maximum energy values (≥ -7 Kcal/mol) against sodium-glucose co-transporter, aldose reductase, and sucrose-isomaltase intestinal, whereas it exhibited intermediate energy …
Effect Of Text Processing Steps On Twitter Sentiment Classification Using Word Embedding, Manar D. Samad, Nalin D. Khounviengxay, Megan A. Witherow
Effect Of Text Processing Steps On Twitter Sentiment Classification Using Word Embedding, Manar D. Samad, Nalin D. Khounviengxay, Megan A. Witherow
Computer Science Faculty Research
Processing of raw text is the crucial first step in text classification and sentiment analysis. However, text processing steps are often performed using off-the-shelf routines and pre-built word dictionaries without optimizing for domain, application, and context. This paper investigates the effect of seven text processing scenarios on a particular text domain (Twitter) and application (sentiment classification). Skip gram-based word embeddings are developed to include Twitter colloquial words, emojis, and hashtag keywords that are often removed for being unavailable in conventional literature corpora. Our experiments reveal negative effects on sentiment classification of two common text processing steps: 1) stop word removal …

From The Tree Of Knowledge And The Golem Of Prague To Kosher Autonomous Cars: The Ethics Of Artificial Intelligence Through Jewish Eyes, Nachshon Goltz, John Zeleznikow, Tracey Dowdeswell
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This article discusses the regulation of artificial intelligence from a Jewish perspective, with an emphasis on the regulation of machine learning and its application to autonomous vehicles and machine learning. Through the Biblical story of Adam and Eve as well as Golem legends from Jewish folklore, we derive several basic principles that underlie a Jewish perspective on the moral and legal personhood of robots and other artificially intelligent agents. We argue that religious ethics in general, and Jewish ethics in particular, show us that the dangers of granting moral personhood to robots and in particular to autonomous vehicles lie not …
A Computer Science Academic Vocabulary List, David Roesler
A Computer Science Academic Vocabulary List, David Roesler
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis documents the development of the Computer Science Academic Vocabulary List (CSAVL), a pedagogical tool intended for use by English-for-specific-purpose educators and material developers. A 3.5-million-word corpus of academic computer science textbooks and journal articles was developed in order to produce the CSAVL. This study draws on the improved methodologies used in the creation of recent lemma-based word lists such as the Academic Vocabulary List (AVL) and the Medical Academic Vocabulary List (MAVL), which take into account the discipline-specific meanings of academic vocabulary. The CSAVL provides specific information for each entry, including part of speech and CS-specific meanings in …

What for and how will we design children’s technologies in the transhumanism age, and what stance will we take as designers? This paper aims to answer this question with 13 fictional abstracts from sixteen authors of different countries, institutions and disciplines. Transhumanist thinking envisions enhancing human body and mind by blending human biology with technological augmentations. Fundamentally, it seeks to improve the human species, yet the impacts of such movement are unknown and the implications on children’s lives and technologies were not explored deeply. In an age, where technologies can clearly be defined as transhumanist, such as under-skin chips or …
Exploring User Interface Improvements For Software Developers Who Are Blind, Guarionex J. Salivia, Flint D. Million, Megan E. Bening
Exploring User Interface Improvements For Software Developers Who Are Blind, Guarionex J. Salivia, Flint D. Million, Megan E. Bening
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
Software developers who are blind and interact with the computer non-visually face unique challenges with information retrieval. We explore the use of speech and Braille combined with software to provide an improved interface to aid with challenges associated with information retrieval. We motivate our design on common tasks performed by students in a software development course using a Microprocessor without Interlocked Pipeline Stages (MIPS) architecture simulation tool. We test our interface via a single-subject longitudinal study, and we measure and show improvement in both the user’s performance and the user experience.

Critical Media, Information, And Digital Literacy: Increasing Understanding Of Machine Learning Through An Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Course, Barbara R. Burke, Elena Machkasova
Irish Communication Review
Widespread use of Artificial Intelligence in all areas of today’s society creates a unique problem: algorithms used in decision-making are generally not understandable to those without a background in data science. Thus, those who use out-of-the-box Machine Learning (ML) approaches in their work and those affected by these approaches are often not in a position to analyze their outcomes and applicability.
Our paper describes and evaluates our undergraduate course at the University of Minnesota Morris, which fosters understanding of the main ideas behind ML. With Communication, Media & Rhetoric and Computer Science faculty expertise, students from a variety of majors, …

Geometry Aided Sonification, Michael Tecce
Geometry Aided Sonification, Michael Tecce
Computer Science Summer Fellows
Sonification is the process of deriving an audio representation of a time series which conveys important information about that time series. Otology and vision science have established that humans process audio information more quickly than visual information, and sonification can convey data to the visually impaired. In our work, we implement pipelines using Python/Numpy, and we handle both ordinary 1D time series and multivariate time series. For 1D time series, we find that using data to modulate the pitch or timing of preselected sounds (such as sine waves) simply and effectively captures repeating patterns and anomalies/outliers within the data. To …

Some Polycubes Have No Edge Zipper Unfolding, Erik D. Demaine, Martin L. Demaine, David Eppstein, Joseph O'Rourke
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
It is unknown whether every polycube (polyhedron constructed by gluing cubes face-to-face) has an edge unfolding, that is, cuts along edges of the cubes that unfolds the polycube to a single nonoverlapping polygon in the plane. Here we construct polycubes that have no edge zipper unfolding where the cut edges are further restricted to form a path.

Real-Time Counting Of Vehicles Stopped At A Traffic Light Using Vehicular Network Technology, Manuel Contreras, Eric Gamess
Research, Publications & Creative Work
Vehicular Adhoc NETworks (VANETs) is a new and emerging technology for wireless communications that has attracted considerable attention in the last years from the academic, scientific, industrial and governmental communities, due to the improvements and the new features that it brings to the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). In this paper, we present an algorithm that uses VANET technology to determine the total number of vehicles that are stopped at a traffic light at an intersection. To facilitate an efficient counting, we divide the road into fixed-size road regions and through a leader election mechanism, we designate one vehicle in each …

Digital Modeling Of Cultural Heritage Objects, Snehal Padhye, James Ferwerda
Digital Modeling Of Cultural Heritage Objects, Snehal Padhye, James Ferwerda
Frameless
Cultural heritage objects are a rich source of information about human history. Due to the physical nature of these often old and typically rare or unique objects, humanity is at risk of losing this history. Given their importance, preservation is an active area of interest in the research community. While, digitally capturing images of the objects is common practice, we propose a more comprehensive approach to preserving these objects. It involves creating digital models that represent both the three-dimensional shapes of the objects and the materials they are made of.

A Machine Learning Approach To Delineating Neighborhoods From Geocoded Appraisal Data, Rao Hamza Ali, Josh Graves, Stanley Wu, Jenny Lee, Erik Linstead
A Machine Learning Approach To Delineating Neighborhoods From Geocoded Appraisal Data, Rao Hamza Ali, Josh Graves, Stanley Wu, Jenny Lee, Erik Linstead
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Identification of neighborhoods is an important, financially-driven topic in real estate. It is known that the real estate industry uses ZIP (postal) codes and Census tracts as a source of land demarcation to categorize properties with respect to their price. These demarcated boundaries are static and are inflexible to the shift in the real estate market and fail to represent its dynamics, such as in the case of an up-and-coming residential project. Delineated neighborhoods are also used in socioeconomic and demographic analyses where statistics are computed at a neighborhood level. Current practices of delineating neighborhoods have mostly ignored the information …
