Juvenile Hackers: An Empirical Test Of Self-Control Theory And Social Bonding Theory, Sinchul Back, Sadhika Soor, Jennifer Laprade
Juvenile Hackers: An Empirical Test Of Self-Control Theory And Social Bonding Theory, Sinchul Back, Sadhika Soor, Jennifer Laprade
International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime
In accordance with a similar growth in information technology, computer hacking has become a pervasive issue as a form of crime worldwide in recent years. Self-control theory and social bonding theory have frequently been employed to explain various types of crimes, but rarely to explore computer hacking. Drawing from Gottfredson and Hirschi’s (1990) self-control theory and Hirschi’s (1969) social bonding theory, the purpose of this study is to empirically examine the suitability of these two theories in explaining juvenile computer hacking offenses. The self-report survey data utilized for the present study was derived from middle school and high school students …

Architecture Of Aggression In Cyberspace. Testing Cyber Aggression In Young Adults In Hungary, Katalin Parti, Tibor Kiss, Gergely Koplányi
International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime
In order to test whether and how violence is exacerbated in online social networking sites, we utilized the BryantSmith Aggression Scale (Bryant & Smith, 2001), and included examples in the questionnaire offering solutions for 7 different hypothetical cases occurring online (Kiss, 2017). The questionnaire was sent to social work and law school students in Hungary. Prevalence and levels of aggression and its manifestation as violence online proved to be not more severe than in offline social relations. Law students were more aware than students of social work that online hostile acts are discrediting. Students of social work were significantly more …
An Argument For Interdisciplinary Programs In Cybersecurity, Dennis Giever
An Argument For Interdisciplinary Programs In Cybersecurity, Dennis Giever
International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime
In this commentary Dr. Giever presents a compelling argument for interdisciplinary programs in cybersecurity at the university level. He argues that we no longer have the luxury of allowing barriers to exist between those tasked with IT security and those who provide physical security. He recommends that any security program take an “all possible paths” or “balanced approach” to the protection of assets within an organization. Students in computer science, criminal justice, business, human resources, and others should work collaboratively within education programs learning these necessary skills. A team effort is needed to accomplish the myriad of tasks necessary to …
Scaling Up An Infrastructure For Controlled Experimentation With Testing Techniques, Wayne D. Motycka
Scaling Up An Infrastructure For Controlled Experimentation With Testing Techniques, Wayne D. Motycka
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Software testing research often involves reproducing previous experimental results. Previous work created a repository infrastructure for containment and dissemination of testable research subjects using a private centralized storage mechanism for hosting these test subject archives. While this is a good way to store these subjects it can be inefficient when the size of subjects increases or the number of versions of the subject’s source code is large. The delivery of these large subjects from a centralized repository can be quite large and on occasion may not succeed requiring the user to repeat the download request. Coupled with the limited resources …

Offline Signature Verification Via Structural Methods: Graph Edit Distance And Inkball Models, Paul Maergner, Nicholas Howe, Kaspar Riesen, Rolf Ingold, Andreas Fischer
Offline Signature Verification Via Structural Methods: Graph Edit Distance And Inkball Models, Paul Maergner, Nicholas Howe, Kaspar Riesen, Rolf Ingold, Andreas Fischer
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
For handwritten signature verification, signature images are typically represented with fixed-sized feature vectors capturing local and global properties of the handwriting. Graphbased representations offer a promising alternative, as they are flexible in size and model the global structure of the handwriting. However, they are only rarely used for signature verification, which may be due to the high computational complexity involved when matching two graphs. In this paper, we take a closer look at two recently presented structural methods for handwriting analysis, for which efficient matching methods are available: keypoint graphs with approximate graph edit distance and inkball models. Inkball models, …
Bayesian Analytical Approaches For Metabolomics : A Novel Method For Molecular Structure-Informed Metabolite Interaction Modeling, A Novel Diagnostic Model For Differentiating Myocardial Infarction Type, And Approaches For Compound Identification Given Mass Spectrometry Data., Patrick J. Trainor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Metabolomics, the study of small molecules in biological systems, has enjoyed great success in enabling researchers to examine disease-associated metabolic dysregulation and has been utilized for the discovery biomarkers of disease and phenotypic states. In spite of recent technological advances in the analytical platforms utilized in metabolomics and the proliferation of tools for the analysis of metabolomics data, significant challenges in metabolomics data analyses remain. In this dissertation, we present three of these challenges and Bayesian methodological solutions for each. In the first part we develop a new methodology to serve a basis for making higher order inferences in metabolomics, …
Evaluation Of Drug-Loaded Gold Nanoparticle Cytotoxicity As A Function Of Tumor Tissue Heterogeneity., Hunter Allan Miller
Evaluation Of Drug-Loaded Gold Nanoparticle Cytotoxicity As A Function Of Tumor Tissue Heterogeneity., Hunter Allan Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The inherent heterogeneity of tumor tissue presents a major challenge to nanoparticle-medicated drug delivery. This heterogeneity spans from the molecular to the cellular (cell types) and to the tissue (vasculature, extra-cellular matrix) scales. Here we employ computational modeling to evaluate therapeutic response as a function of vascular-induced tumor tissue heterogeneity. Using data with three-layered gold nanoparticles loaded with cisplatin, nanotherapy is simulated with different levels of tissue heterogeneity, and the treatment response is measured in terms of tumor regression. The results show that tumor vascular density non-trivially influences the nanoparticle uptake and washout, and the associated tissue response. The drug …
Empirical Bayesian Approach To Testing Multiple Hypotheses With Separate Priors For Left And Right Alternatives, Naveen K. Bansal, Mehdi Maadooliat, Steven J. Schrodi
Empirical Bayesian Approach To Testing Multiple Hypotheses With Separate Priors For Left And Right Alternatives, Naveen K. Bansal, Mehdi Maadooliat, Steven J. Schrodi
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
We consider a multiple hypotheses problem with directional alternatives in a decision theoretic framework. We obtain an empirical Bayes rule subject to a constraint on mixed directional false discovery rate (mdFDR≤α) under the semiparametric setting where the distribution of the test statistic is parametric, but the prior distribution is nonparametric. We proposed separate priors for the left tail and right tail alternatives as it may be required for many applications. The proposed Bayes rule is compared through simulation against rules proposed by Benjamini and Yekutieli and Efron. We illustrate the proposed methodology for two sets of …
Theatrical Genre Prediction Using Social Network Metrics, Manisha Shukla
Theatrical Genre Prediction Using Social Network Metrics, Manisha Shukla
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the emergence of digitization, large text corpora are now available online that provide humanities scholars an opportunity to perform literary analysis leveraging the use of computational techniques. This work is focused on applying network theory concepts in the field of literature to explore correlations between the mathematical properties of the social networks of plays and the plays’ dramatic genre, specifically how well social network metrics can identify genre without taking vocabulary into consideration. Almost no work has been done to study the ability of mathematical properties of network graphs to predict literary features. We generated character interaction networks of …

Trajectory-Driven Influential Billboard Placement, Ping Zhang, Zhifeng Bao, Yuchen Li, Guoliang Li, Yipeng Zhang, Zhiyong Peng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper we propose and study the problem of trajectory-driven influential billboard placement: given a set of billboards U (each with a location and a cost), a database of trajectories T and a budget L, find a set of billboards within the budget to influence the largest number of trajectories. One core challenge is to identify and reduce the overlap of the influence from different billboards to the same trajectories, while keeping the budget constraint into consideration. We show that this problem is NP-hard and present an enumeration based algorithm with (1−1/e) approximation ratio. However, the enumeration should be …

Anonymous Privacy-Preserving Task Matching In Crowdsourcing, Jiangang Shu, Ximeng Liu, Xiaohua Jia, Kan Yang, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the development of sharing economy, crowdsourcing as a distributed computing paradigm has become increasingly pervasive. As one of indispensable services for most crowdsourcing applications, task matching has also been extensively explored. However, privacy issues are usually ignored during the task matching and few existing privacy-preserving crowdsourcing mechanisms can simultaneously protect both task privacy and worker privacy. This paper systematically analyzes the privacy leaks and potential threats in the task matching and proposes a single-keyword task matching scheme for the multirequester/multiworker crowdsourcing with efficient worker revocation. The proposed scheme not only protects data confidentiality and identity anonymity against the crowd-server, …

Lightweight Break-Glass Access Control System For Healthcare Internet-Of-Things, Yang Yang, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Healthcare Internet-of-things (IoT) has been proposed as a promising means to greatly improve the efficiency and quality of patient care. Medical devices in healthcare IoT measure patients' vital signs and aggregate these data into medical files which are uploaded to the cloud for storage and accessed by healthcare workers. To protect patients' privacy, encryption is normally used to enforce access control of medical files by authorized parties while preventing unauthorized access. In healthcare, it is crucial to enable timely access of patient files in emergency situations. In this paper, we propose a lightweight break-glass access control (LiBAC) system that supports …
Transaction Cost Optimization For Online Portfolio Selection, Bin Li, Jialei Wang, Dingjiang Huang, Steven C. H. Hoi
Transaction Cost Optimization For Online Portfolio Selection, Bin Li, Jialei Wang, Dingjiang Huang, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To improve existing online portfolio selection strategies in the case of non-zero transaction costs, we propose a novel framework named Transaction Cost Optimization (TCO). The TCO framework incorporates the L1 norm of the difference between two consecutive allocations together with the principles of maximizing expected log return. We further solve the formulation via convex optimization, and obtain two closed-form portfolio update formulas, which follow the same principle as Proportional Portfolio Rebalancing (PPR) in industry. We empirically evaluate the proposed framework using four commonly used data-sets. Although these data-sets do not consider delisted firms and are thus subject to survival bias, …
Code Smells For Model-View-Controller Architectures, Maurício Aniche, Gabriele Bavota, Christoph Treude, Marco Aurélio Gerosa, Arie Van Deursen
Code Smells For Model-View-Controller Architectures, Maurício Aniche, Gabriele Bavota, Christoph Treude, Marco Aurélio Gerosa, Arie Van Deursen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Previous studies have shown the negative effects that low-quality code can have on maintainability proxies, such as code change- and defect-proneness. One of the symptoms of low-quality code are code smells, defined as sub-optimal implementation choices. While this definition is quite general and seems to suggest a wide spectrum of smells that can affect software systems, the research literature mostly focuses on the set of smells defined in the catalog by Fowler and Beck, reporting design issues that can potentially affect any kind of system, regardless of their architecture (e.g., Complex Class). However, systems adopting a specific architecture (e.g., the …

Customer Segmentation Using Online Platforms: Isolating Behavioral And Demographic Segments For Persona Creation Via Aggregated User Data, Jisun An, Haewoon Kwak, Soon‑Gyo Jung, Joni Salminen, Bernard J. Jansen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose a novel approach for isolating customer segments using online customer data for products that are distributed via online social media platforms. We use non-negative matrix factorization to first identify behavioral customer segments and then to identify demographic customer segments. We employ a methodology for linking the two segments to present integrated and holistic customer segments, also known as personas. Behavioral segments are generated from customer interactions with online content. Demographic segments are generated using the gender, age, and location of these customers. In addition to evaluating our approach, we demonstrate its practicality via a system leveraging these customer …

Proactive And Reactive Resource/Task Allocation For Agent Teams In Uncertain Environments, Pritee Agrawal
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Synergistic interactions between task/resource allocation and multi-agent coordinated planning/assignment exist in many problem domains such as trans- portation and logistics, disaster rescue, security patrolling, sensor networks, power distribution networks, etc. These domains often feature dynamic environments where allocations of tasks/resources may have complex dependencies and agents may leave the team due to unforeseen conditions (e.g., emergency, accident or violation, damage to agent, reconfiguration of environment).
Secure Enforcement Of Isolation Policy On Multicore Platforms With Virtualization Techniques, Siqi Zhao
Secure Enforcement Of Isolation Policy On Multicore Platforms With Virtualization Techniques, Siqi Zhao
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
A number of virtualization based systems have been proposed in the literature as an effective measure against the adversaries with the kernel privilege. However, under a systematic analysis, such systems exhibit vulnerabilities that can still be exploited by such an attacker with the kernel privilege. The fundamental reason is that there is an inherent incompatibility between the tamper-proof requirement and the complete mediation requirement of the reference monitor model. The incompatibility manifests in the virtualization based systems in the form of a discrepancy between the enforcement capability demanded by the high-level policy and the one achievable through the system design …
Detecting Saliency By Combining Speech And Object Detection In Indoor Environments, Kiran Thapa
Detecting Saliency By Combining Speech And Object Detection In Indoor Environments, Kiran Thapa
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Describing scenes such as rooms, city streets, or routes, is a very common human task that requires the ability to identify and describe the scene sufficiently for a hearer to develop a mental model of the scene. When people talk about such scenes, they mention some objects of the scene at the exclusion of others. We call the mentioned objects salient objects as people consider them noticeable or important in comparison to other non-mentioned objects. In this thesis, we look at saliency of visual scenes and how visual saliency informs what can and should be said about a scene when …

Robotic Arm Remote Control Framework, Anthony La Rosa
Robotic Arm Remote Control Framework, Anthony La Rosa
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a robot control framework to aid in research using a robotic arm. The scope of this current study is to develop a framework to allow controlling the robotic arm from either a remote network or locally in the lab. A previous method of remote control was present using a Java applet that is no longer supported. The new framework allows communication through REST calls to a server controlling the robot and also tests direct commands to the robot controller to evaluate the overhead of all communication methods.
Deep Reinforcement Learning For Autonomous Search And Rescue, Juan Gonzalo Cárcamo Zuluaga
Deep Reinforcement Learning For Autonomous Search And Rescue, Juan Gonzalo Cárcamo Zuluaga
Masters Theses
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming more prevalent every day. In addition, advances in battery life and electronic sensors have enabled the development of diverse UAV applications outside their original military domain. For example, Search and Rescue (SAR) operations can benefit greatly from modern UAVs since even the simplest commercial models are equipped with high-resolution cameras and the ability to stream video to a computer or portable device. As a result, autonomous unmanned systems (ground, aquatic, and aerial) have recently been employed for such typical SAR tasks as terrain mapping, task observation, and early supply delivery. However, these systems were …

Spreading Propaganda In Cyberspace: Comparing Cyber-Resource Usage Of Al Qaeda And Isis, Kyung-Shick Choi, Claire Seungeun Lee, Robert Cadigan
International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime
Terrorists in cyberspace are increasingly utilizing social media to promote their ideologies, recruit new members, and justify terrorist attacks and actions. This study explores the ways in which types of social media, message contents, and motives for spreading propaganda take shape in cyberspace. In order to empirically test these relations, we created a dataset with annual terrorism reports from 2011 to 2016. In our global cyberterrorism dataset, we used and connected cyber-resources (Facebook, online forum, Twitter mentions, websites, and YouTube videos) and legal documents of individual cases that were mentioned in the reports. The results show that YouTube videos were …

Unusual Events In Github Repositories, Christoph Treude, Larissa Leite, Maurício Aniche
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In large and active software projects, it becomes impractical for a developer to stay aware of all project activity. While it might not be necessary to know about each commit or issue, it is arguably important to know about the ones that are unusual. To investigate this hypothesis, we identified unusual events in 200 GitHub projects using a comprehensive list of ways in which an artifact can be unusual and asked 140 developers responsible for or affected by these events to comment on the usefulness of the corresponding information. Based on 2,096 answers, we identify the subset of unusual events …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
When developers gain thorough understanding and knowledge of software security, they can produce more secure software. This study aims at empirically identifying and understanding the security issues posted on a random sample of GitHub repositories. We tried to understand the presence of security issues and their key themes and topics. We applied a mixedmethods approach, combining topic modeling techniques and qualitative analysis. Our findings have revealed that a) the rate of security-related issues was rather small (approx. 3% of all issues), b) the majority of the security issues were related to identity management and cryptography topics. We present 7 high-level …

Customer Level Predictive Modeling For Accounts Receivable To Reduce Intervention Actions, Michelle L. F. Cheong, Wen Shi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
One of the main costs associated with Accounts receivable (AR) collection is related to the intervention actions taken to remind customers to pay their outstanding invoices. Apart from the cost, intervention actions may lead to poor customer satisfaction, which is undesirable in a competitive industry. In this paper, we studied the payment behavior of invoices for customers of a logistics company, and used predictive modeling to predict if a customer will pay the outstanding invoices with high probability, in an attempt to reduce intervention actions taken, thus reducing cost and improving customer relationship. We defined a pureness measure to classify …
