Scoped: Evaluating A Composite Visualisation Of The Scope Chain Hierarchy Within Source Code, Ivan Bacher, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
This paper presents two studies that evaluate the effectiveness of a software visualisation tool which uses a com- posite visualisation to encode the scope chain and information related to the scope chain within source code. The first study evaluates the effectiveness of adding the composite visualisation to a source code editor to help programmers understand scope relationships within source code. The second study evaluates the effectiveness of each individual component within the composite visualisation. The composite visualisation is composed of a packed circle tree diagram (overview component) and a list view (detail view component). The packed circle tree functions as …

The Code Mini-Map Visualisation: Encoding Conceptual Structures Within Source Code, Ivan Bacher, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
Modern source code editors typically include a code mini-map visualisation, which provides programmers with an overview of the currently open source code document. This paper proposes to add a layering mechanism to the code mini- map visualisation in order to provide programmers with visual answers to questions related to conceptual structures that are not manifested directly in the code. Details regarding the design and implementation of this scope information layer, which displays additional encodings that correspond to the scope chain and information related to the scope chain within a source code document, is presented. The scope information layer can be …

Strategic Players For Identifying Optimal Social Network Intervention Subjects, Miles Q. Ott, John M. Light, Melissa A. Clark, Nancy P. Barnett
Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
We present a method whereby social network ties are used to identify behavioral leaders who are situated in the network such that these individuals are: 1) able to influence other individuals who are in need of and most receptive to intervention, thereby optimizing the impact of the intervention; and 2) not embedded with ties to individuals that are likely to be behaviorally antagonistic to the intervention or that would compromise the optimal impact of intervention. In this study we developed a method that we call Strategic Players, which is a solution for identifying a set of players who are close …

Orecchio: Extending Body-Language Through Actuated Static And Dynamic Auricular Postures, Da-Yuan Huang, Teddy Seyed, Jun Gong, Zhihao Yao, Yuchen Jiao, Xiang Anthony Chen, Xing-Dong Yang
Dartmouth Scholarship
In this paper, we propose using the auricle – the visible part of the ear – as a means of expressive output to extend body language to convey emotional states. With an initial exploratory study, we provide an initial set of dynamic and static auricular postures. Using these results, we examined the relationship between emotions and auricular postures, noting that dynamic postures involving stretching the top helix in fast (e.g., 2Hz) and slow speeds (1Hz) conveyed intense and mild pleasantness while static postures involving bending the side or top helix towards the center of the ear were associated with intense …

Self-Powered Gesture Recognition With Ambient Light, Yichen Li, Tianxing Li, Ruchir Patel, Xia Zhou, Xing-Dong Yang
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present a self-powered module for gesture recognition that utilizes small, low-cost photodiodes for both energy harvesting and gesture sensing. Operating in the photovoltaic mode, photodiodes harvest energy from ambient light. In the meantime, the instantaneously harvested power from individual photodiodes is monitored and exploited as a clue for sensing finger gestures in proximity. Harvested power from all photodiodes are aggregated to drive the whole gesture-recognition module including a micro-controller running the recognition algorithm. We design robust, lightweight algorithm to recognize finger gestures in the presence of ambient light fluctuations. We fabricate two prototypes to facilitate user’s interaction with smart …

A Quantitative Study Of The Deployment Of The Sender Policy Framework, Eunice Zsu Tan
Theses and Dissertations
Email has become a standard form of communication between businesses. With the prevalent use of email as a form of communication between businesses and customers, phishing emails have emerged as a popular social engineering approach. With phishing, attackers trick users into divulging their personal information through email spoofing. Thus, it is imperative to verify the sender of an email. Anti-spoofing mechanisms such as the Sender Policy Framework (SPF) have been developed as the first line of defense against spoofing by validating the source of an email as well as the presenting options of how to handle emails that fail to …

Developing Accessible Collection And Presentation Methods For Observational Data, Drew Marie Williams
Dissertations (1934 -)
The processes of collecting, cleaning, and presenting data are critical in ensuring the proper analysis of data at a later date. An opportunity exists to enhance the data collection and presentation process for those who are not data scientists – such as healthcare professionals and businesspeople interested in using data to help them make decisions. In this work, creating an observational data collection and presentation tool is investigated, with a focus on developing a tool prioritizing user-friendliness and context preservation of the data collected. This aim is achieved via the integration of three approaches to data collection and presentation. In …

Indutivo: Contact-Based, Object-Driven Interactions With Inductive Sensing, Jun Gong, Xin Yang, Teddy Seyed, Josh Urban Davis, Xing-Dong Yang
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present Indutivo, a contact-based inductive sensing technique for contextual interactions. Our technique recognizes conductive objects (metallic primarily) that are commonly found in households and daily environments, as well as their individual movements when placed against the sensor. These movements include sliding, hinging, and rotation. We describe our sensing principle and how we designed the size, shape, and layout of our sensor coils to optimize sensitivity, sensing range, recognition and tracking accuracy. Through several studies, we also demonstrated the performance of our proposed sensing technique in environments with varying levels of noise and interference conditions. We conclude by presenting demo …
Battery-Free Eye Tracker On Glasses, Tianxing Li, Xia Zhou
Battery-Free Eye Tracker On Glasses, Tianxing Li, Xia Zhou
Dartmouth Scholarship
This paper presents a battery-free wearable eye tracker that tracks both the 2D position and diameter of a pupil based on its light absorption property. With a few near-infrared (NIR) lights and photodiodes around the eye, NIR lights sequentially illuminate the eye from various directions while photodiodes sense spatial patterns of reflected light, which are used to infer pupil’s position and diameter on the fly via a lightweight inference algorithm. The system also exploits characteristics of different eye movement stages and adjusts its sensing and computation accordingly for further energy savings. A prototype is built with off-the-shelf hardware components and …

Measuring Program Comprehension: A Large-Scale Field Study With Professionals, Xin Xia, Lingfeng Bao, David Lo, Zhengchang Xing, Ahmed E. Hassan, Shanping Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
During software development and maintenance, developers spend a considerable amount of time on program comprehension activities. Previous studies show that program comprehension takes up as much as half of a developer's time. However, most of these studies are performed in a controlled setting, or with a small number of participants, and investigate the program comprehension activities only within the IDEs. However, developers' program comprehension activities go well beyond their IDE interactions. In this paper, we extend our ActivitySpace framework to collect and analyze Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) data across many applications (not just the IDEs). We follow Minelli et al.'s approach …

Initializing Trust In Smart Devices Via Presence Attestation, Xuhua Ding, Gene Tsudik
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many personal computing and more specialized (e.g., high-end IoT) devices are now equipped with sophisticated processors that only a few years ago were present only on high-end desktops and servers. Such processors often include an important hardware security component in the form of a DRTM (Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement) which initiates trust and resists software (and even some physical) attacks. However, despite substantial prior research on trust establishment with secure hardware, DRTM security was always considered without any involvement of the human user, who represents a vital missing link. This prompts an important challenge: how can a user …

Exploring Experiential Learning Model And Risk Management Process For An Undergraduate Software Architecture Course, Eng Lieh Ouh, Yunghans Irawan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper shares our insights on exploring theexperiential learning model and risk management process todesign an undergraduate software architecture course. The keychallenge for undergraduate students to appreciate softwarearchitecture design is usually their limited experience in thesoftware industry. In software architecture, the high-level designprinciples are heuristics lacking the absoluteness of firstprinciples which for inexperienced undergraduate students, thisis a frustrating divergence from what they used to value. From aneducator's perspective, teaching software architecture requirescontending with the problem of how to express this level ofabstraction practically and also make the learning realistic. Inthis paper, we propose a model adapting the concepts ofexperiential learning …

Teacher evaluation is a vital element inimproving student learning outcomes. Course and instructor feedback given bystudents, provides insights that can help improve student learning outcomes andteaching quality. Teaching and course evaluation systems help to collectquantitative and qualitative feedback from students. Since manually analysingthe qualitative feedback is painstaking and a tedious process, usually, onlythe quantitative feedback is often used for evaluating the course and theinstructor. However, useful knowledge is hidden in the qualitative comments, inthe form of sentiments and suggestions that can provide valuable insights tohelp plan improvements in the course content and delivery. In order toefficiently gather, analyse and provide …
Exploiting The Interdependency Of Land Use And Mobility For Urban Planning, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Andrew Tan, Archan Misra
Exploiting The Interdependency Of Land Use And Mobility For Urban Planning, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Andrew Tan, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Urban planners and economists alike have strong interest in understanding the inter-dependency of land use and people flow. The two-pronged problem entails systematic modeling and understanding of how land use impacts crowd flow to an area and in turn, how the influx of people to an area (or lack thereof) can influence the viability of business entities in that area. With cities becoming increasingly sensor-rich, for example, digitized payments for public transportation and constant trajectory tracking of buses and taxis, understanding and modelling crowd flows at the city scale, as well as, at finer granularity such as at the neighborhood …

Inferring Trip Occupancies In The Rise Of Ride-Hailing Services, Meng-Fen Chiang, Ee-Peng Lim, Wang-Chien Lee, Tuan-Anh Hoang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The knowledge of all occupied and unoccupied trips made by self-employed drivers are essential for optimized vehicle dispatch by ride-hailing services (e.g., Didi Dache, Uber, Lyft, Grab, etc.). However, the occupancy status of vehicles is not always known to the service operators due to adoption of multiple ride-hailing apps. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, Learning to INfer Trips (LINT), to infer occupancy of car trips by exploring characteristics of observed occupied trips. Two main research steps, stop point classification and structural segmentation, are included in LINT. In the stop point classification step, we represent a vehicle trajectory …

Prediction Of Relatedness In Stack Overflow: Deep Learning Vs. Svm: A Reproducibility Study, Bowen Xu, Amirreza Shirani, David Lo, Mohammad Amin Alipour
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Background Xu et al. used a deep neural network (DNN) technique to classify the degree of relatedness between two knowledge units (question-answer threads) on Stack Overflow. More recently, extending Xu et al.'s work, Fu and Menzies proposed a simpler classification technique based on a fine-tuned support vector machine (SVM) that achieves similar performance but in a much shorter time. Thus, they suggested that researchers need to compare their sophisticated methods against simpler alternatives.Aim The aim of this work is to replicate the previous studies and further investigate the validity of Fu and Menzies' claim by evaluating the DNN- and SVM-based …

Every substation is controlled by a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system which communicates on DNP3 protocol on Internet/IP which has many security vulnerabilities. This research will focus on Distributed Network Protocol (DNP3) communication which is used in the smart grid to communicate between the controller devices. We …
Interfacing Iconicity - Addressing Software Divarication Through Diagrammatic Design Principles, George Akhvlediani
Interfacing Iconicity - Addressing Software Divarication Through Diagrammatic Design Principles, George Akhvlediani
Theses and Dissertations
This research examines conflicts accompanying the proliferation of computer technology and, more specifically, constellations of dependency in the always expanding volume of software, platforms, and the firms/individuals using them. We identify a pervasive phenomenon of “divarication” in the growing variety of progressively specialized systems and system roles. As software systems enter new thresholds of sophistication, they effectively aggregate many distinct components and protocols. Consequently, we are confronted with a diverse ecology of stratified and thereby incompatible software systems. Software inherits the limitations and potential flaws of its constituent parts, but unlike physical machinery, it isn’t readily disassembled in instances of …
Efficient Attribute-Based Encryption With Blackbox Traceability, Shengmin Xu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Ximeng Liu
Efficient Attribute-Based Encryption With Blackbox Traceability, Shengmin Xu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Ximeng Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Traitor tracing scheme can be used to identify a decryption key is illegally used in public-key encryption. In CCS’13, Liu et al. proposed an attribute-based traitor tracing (ABTT) scheme with blackbox traceability which can trace decryption keys embedded in a decryption blackbox/device rather than tracing a well-formed decryption key. However, the existing ABTT schemes with blackbox traceability are based on composite order group and the size of the decryption key depends on the policies and the number of system users. In this paper, we revisit blackbox ABTT and introduce a new primitive called attribute-based set encryption (ABSE) based on key-policy …
Multiperspective Graph-Theoretic Similarity Measure, Dung D. Le, Hady W. Lauw
Multiperspective Graph-Theoretic Similarity Measure, Dung D. Le, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Determining the similarity between two objects is pertinent to many applications. When the basis for similarity is a set of object-to-object relationships, it is natural to rely on graph-theoretic measures. One seminal technique for measuring the structural-context similarity between a pair of graph vertices is SimRank, whose underlying intuition is that two objects are similar if they are connected by similar objects. However, by design, SimRank as well as its variants capture only a single view or perspective of similarity. Meanwhile, in many real-world scenarios, there emerge multiple perspectives of similarity, i.e., two objects may be similar from one perspective, …
Phasorsec: Protocol Security Filters For Wide Area Measurement Systems, Prashant Anantharaman, Kartik Palani, Rafael Brantley, Sergey Bratus, Sean W. Smith
Phasorsec: Protocol Security Filters For Wide Area Measurement Systems, Prashant Anantharaman, Kartik Palani, Rafael Brantley, Sergey Bratus, Sean W. Smith
Dartmouth Scholarship
The addition of synchrophasors to the power grid to improve observability comes at the cost of an increased attack surface: the wide area measurement system. A common source of zero-days, that can be used to exploit the system, is improper input validation. The strict availability and timing requirements of the grid make it critical that input validation be done right and in a timely fashion. PhasorSec is a hardened security filter for the synchrophasor communication protocol, C37.118. PhasorSec is built using language theoretic principles which treat all input as a language with a specific grammar that defines what input must …
Investigating Multimodal Affect Sensing In An Affective Tutoring System Using Unobtrusive Sensors, Hua Leong Fwa, Lindsay Marshall
Investigating Multimodal Affect Sensing In An Affective Tutoring System Using Unobtrusive Sensors, Hua Leong Fwa, Lindsay Marshall
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Affect inextricably plays a critical role in the learning process. In this study, we investigate the multimodal fusion of facial, keystrokes, mouse clicks, head posture and contextual features for the detection of student’s frustration in an Affective Tutoring System. The results (AUC=0.64) demonstrated empirically that a multimodal approach offers higher accuracy and better robustness as compared to a unimodal approach. In addition, the inclusion of keystrokes and mouse clicks makes up for the detection gap where video based sensing modes (facial and head postures) are not available. The findings in this paper will dovetail to our end research objective of …

Mixed-Reality For Object-Focused Remote Collaboration, Martin Feick, Anthony Tang, Scott Bateman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper we outline the design of a mixed-reality system to support object-focused remote collaboration. Here, being able to adjust collaborators' perspectives on the object as well as understand one another's perspective is essential to support effective collaboration over distance. We propose a low-cost mixed-reality system that allows users to: (1) quickly align and understand each other's perspective; (2) explore objects independently from one another, and (3) render gestures in the remote's workspace. In this work, we focus on the expert's role and we introduce an interaction technique allowing users to quickly manipulation 3D virtual objects in space.

Knowledge-Aware Multimodal Dialogue Systems, Lizi Liao, Yunshan Ma, Xiangnan He, Richang Huang, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
By offering a natural way for information seeking, multimodal dialogue systems are attracting increasing attention in several domains such as retail, travel etc. However, most existing dialogue systems are limited to textual modality, which cannot be easily extended to capture the rich semantics in visual modality such as product images. For example, in fashion domain, the visual appearance of clothes and matching styles play a crucial role in understanding the user’s intention. Without considering these, the dialogue agent may fail to generate desirable responses for users. In this paper, we present a Knowledge-aware Multimodal Dialogue (KMD) model to address the …

Enabling Verifiable Multiple Keywords Search Over Encrypted Cloud Data, Yinbin Miao, Jian Weng, Ximeng Liu, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Zhiquan Liu, Hongwei Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Searchable Encryption (SE) enables a user to search over encrypted data, such as data stored in a remote cloud server. Existing certificate-, identity-, and attribute-based SE schemes suffer from certificate management or key escrow limitations. Furthermore, the semi-honest-but-curious cloud may conduct partial search operations and return a fraction of the search results (i.e., incomplete results) in order to reduce costs. In this paper, we present a secure cryptographic primitive, Verifiable Multiple Keywords Search (VMKS) over ciphertexts, which leverages the Identity-Based Encryption (IBE) and certificateless signature techniques. The VMKS scheme allows the user to verify the correctness of …
