Systems Evolution And Engineering Thermodynamics, Terry Bristol Oct 2018

Systems Evolution And Engineering Thermodynamics, Terry Bristol

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Despite impressive contributions, the philosophical foundations of systems theory remain in flux. In the practical context, the proper understanding of the relation of the systems framework to classical mechanics and quantum theory remains unresolved.

I argue our understanding of systems theory is advanced by recognizing the crucial link to engineering and thermodynamics. Engineering thermodynamics is more general than the historically dominant ‘rational mechanical’ thermodynamics of Clausius, Boltzmann, the Entropy Cult (viz. Jaynes’s MEP) and the recent information theory.

That systems theory’s philosophical foundations are in a philosophy of engineering and an engineering worldview should be no surprise, given the modern …

The Role Of Antipodal Connectivity Structure On Cognitive Functions And Mental Disorders, Bayazit Karaman Oct 2018

The Role Of Antipodal Connectivity Structure On Cognitive Functions And Mental Disorders, Bayazit Karaman

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding physiological processes in the brain requires formal system models. Furthermore, connectivity is a core component of such models. According to recent studies, 70% of all information within the cortical regions in the brain passed through only 20\% of information processing nodes, commonly referred as "Connector Hub Nodes" (CHNs). Knowledge of these CHNs not only help to understand the information processing behavior of the cortex but also reveals the impact of neurogenerative diseases that affect the functional brain connectivity. CHNs have been previously identified using functional magnetic resonance imaging (f-MRI) method, however, we believe that Electroencephalography (EEG), despite its low …

How We Done It Good: Research Through Design As A Legitimate Methodology For Librarianship, Rachel Ivy Clarke Oct 2018

How We Done It Good: Research Through Design As A Legitimate Methodology For Librarianship, Rachel Ivy Clarke

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

“How we done it good” publications—a genre concerning project-based approaches that describe how (and sometimes why) something was done—are often rebuked in the library research community for lacking traditional scientific validity, reliability, and generalizability. While scientific methodologies may be a common approach to research and inquiry, they are not the only methodological paradigms. This research posits that the “how we done it good” paradigm in librarianship reflects a valid and legitimate approach to research. By drawing on the concept of research through design, this study shows how these “how we done it good” projects reflect design methodologies which draw …

Modern marine biologists seeking to study or interact with deep-sea organisms are confronted with few options beyond industrial robotic arms, claws, and suction samplers. This limits biological interactions to a subset of “rugged” and mostly immotile fauna. As the deep sea is one of the most biologically diverse and least studied ecosystems on the planet, there is much room for innovation in facilitating delicate interactions with a multitude of organisms. The biodiversity and physiology of shallow marine systems, such as coral reefs, are common study targets due to the easier nature of access; SCUBA diving allows for in situ delicate …

Design And Development Of A Preliminary Virtual Endoluminal Surgical Simulation (Vess) For Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (Esd) Surgery, Berk Cetinsaya

Theses and Dissertations

Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) is an endoscopic technique for en bloc resection of gastrointestinal lesions. Inadequate training platforms and lack of established training curricula have restricted its wide acceptance in the US. Thus, we aim to develop a Virtual Endoluminal Surgery Simulator (VESS) for objective ESD training and assessment. We performed a detailed colorectal ESD task analysis and identified the critical ESD steps. We constructed a hierarchical task tree that elaborates the order of tasks in these steps. Furthermore, we generated quantitative ESD performance metrics. We measured task times and scores of 16 ESD surgeries performed by four different endoscopic …

Building Iot Based Applications For Smart Cities: How Can Ontology Catalogs Help?, Amelia Gyrard, Antoine Zimmermann, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Internet of Things (IoT) plays an ever-increasing role in enabling smart city applications. An ontology-based semantic approach can help improve interoperability between a variety of IoT-generated as well as complementary data needed to drive these applications. While multiple ontology catalogs exist, using them for IoT and smart city applications require significant amount of work. In this paper, we demonstrate how can ontology catalogs be more effectively used to design and develop smart city applications? We consider four ontology catalogs that are relevant for IoT and smart cities: 1) READY4SmartCities; 2) linked open vocabulary (LOV); 3) OpenSensingCity (OSC); and 4) …

Capturing The Fast-Food Landscape In England Using Large-Scale Network Analysis, Magda Baniukiewicz, Zachariah L. Dick, Philippe J. Giabbanelli

Computer Science Publications

Fast-food outlets play a significant role in the nutrition of British children who get more food from such shops than the school canteen. To reduce young people’s access to fast-food meals during the school day, many British cities are implementing zoning policies. For instance, cities can create buffers around schools, and some have used 200 meters buffers while others used 400 meters. But how close is too close? Using the road network is needed to precisely computing the distance between fast-food outlets (for policies limiting the concentration), or fast-food outlets and the closest school (for policies using buffers). This estimates …

March Of The Silent Bots, Paul Robert Griffin

MITB Thought Leadership Series

Self-intelligent software robots, or ‘bots’ are everywhere. These small pieces of code run automated tasks when you order a taxi, search for a restaurant or check the weather. Quietly beavering away, it is unknown how many bots exist, but undoubtedly this number is set to surge over time. Already, bots comprise roughly half of all internet traffic.

Psychological Behavior Of English Learners Utilizing A Cognitive Tutor In An Online Pre-Calculus, Julian Viera Jr., Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The educational landscape is becoming a digital learning environment. Students in today's digital world draw from multiple sources of information; from hypertext, videos, social media, to video games and internet searches. English Learners, individuals learning two languages at once, who use software written in English have a passive relationship with the computer when software is not in their native language. They feel that this educational software belongs to another culture. This paper will present findings from a study with English Learners' engagement in a fully online pre-calculus course. The authors utilized Cultural-Historical Activity Theory to describe how English Learners' created …

Probability-Based Approach Explains (And Even Improves) Heuristic Formulas Of Defuzzification, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Fuzzy techniques have been successfully used in many applications. However, often, formulas for processing fuzzy information are often heuristic: they lack a convincing justification, and thus, users are sometimes reluctant to use them. In this paper, we show that we can justify (and sometimes even improve) these methods if we use a probability-based approach.

Experimental Determination Of Mechanical Properties Is, In General, Np-Hard -- Unless We Measure Everything, Yan Wang, Oscar Galindo, Michael Baca, Jake Lasley, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

When forces are applied to different parts of a construction, they cause displacements. In practice, displacements are usually reasonably small. In this case, we can safely ignore quadratic and higher order terms in the corresponding dependence and assume that the forces linear depend on displacements. The coefficients of this linear dependence determine the mechanical properties of the construction and thus, need to be experimentally determined. In the ideal case, when we measure the forces and displacements at all possible locations, it is easy to find the corresponding coefficients: it is sufficient to solve the corresponding system of linear equations. In …

In The Discrete Case, Averaging Cannot Be Consistent, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2018

In The Discrete Case, Averaging Cannot Be Consistent, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

When we have two estimates of the same quantity, it is desirable to combine them into a single more accurate estimate. In the usual case of continuous quantities, a natural idea is to take the arithmetic average of the two estimates. If we have four estimates, then we can divide them into two pairs, average each pair, and then average the resulting averages. Arithmetic average is consistent in the sense that the result does not depend on how we divide the original four estimates into two pairs. For discrete quantities -- e.g., quantities described by integers -- the arithmetic average …

Preferences (Partial Pre-Orders) On Complex Numbers -- In View Of Possible Use In Quantum Econometrics, Songsak Sriboonchitta, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva Oct 2018

Preferences (Partial Pre-Orders) On Complex Numbers -- In View Of Possible Use In Quantum Econometrics, Songsak Sriboonchitta, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In economic application, it is desirable to find an optimal solution -- i.e., a solution which is preferable to any other possible solution. Traditionally, the state of an economic system has been described by real-valued quantities such as profit, unemployment level, etc. For such quantities, preferences correspond to natural order between real numbers: all things being equal, the more profit the better, and the smaller unemployment, the better. Lately, it turned out that to adequately describe economic phenomena, it is often convenient to use complex numbers. From this viewpoint, a natural question is: what are possible orders on complex numbers? …

Comparing Us And Russian Grading Scales, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2018

Comparing Us And Russian Grading Scales, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the US, grades are usually based on comprehensive written exams: the larger the proportion of topic in which the student shows knowledge, the higher the student's grade. In contrast, in Russia, the grades are based on oral exams, and the bulk of the grade comes from a student answering questions of a few (usually, three) randomly selected topics. A natural question is: what is the relation between the two grading scales? It turns out that "excellent" and "good" grades means the same in both scales, while the US "satisfactory" level is higher than a similar Russian level.

Objective

To characterize nonpsychiatric prescription patterns of antidepressants according to drug labels and evidence assessments (on-label, evidence-based, and off-label) using structured outpatient electronic health record (EHR) data. Methods

A retrospective analysis was conducted using deidentified EHR data from an outpatient practice at a New York City-based academic medical center. Structured “medication–diagnosis” pairs for antidepressants from 35 325 patients between January 2010 and December 2015 were compared to the latest drug product labels and evidence assessments. Results

Of 140 929 antidepressant prescriptions prescribed by primary care providers (PCPs) and nonpsychiatry specialists, 69% were characterized as “on-label/evidence-based uses.” Depression diagnoses were associated …

Exploring The Effect Of Different Numbers Of Convolutional Filters And Training Loops On The Performance Of Alphazero, Jared Prince Oct 2018

Exploring The Effect Of Different Numbers Of Convolutional Filters And Training Loops On The Performance Of Alphazero, Jared Prince

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this work, the algorithm used by AlphaZero is adapted for dots and boxes, a two-player game. This algorithm is explored using different numbers of convolutional filters and training loops, in order to better understand the effect these parameters have on the learning of the player. Different board sizes are also tested to compare these parameters in relation to game complexity. AlphaZero originated as a Go player using an algorithm which combines Monte Carlo tree search and convolutional neural networks. This novel approach, integrating a reinforcement learning method previously applied to Go (MCTS) with a supervised learning method (neural networks) …
