Augmenting Amdahl's Second Law: A Theoretical Model To Build Cost-Effective Balanced Hpc Infrastructure For Data-Driven Science, Arghya Kusum Das, Jaeki Hong, Sayan Goswami, Richard Platania, Kisung Lee, Wooseok Chang, Seung Jong Park, Ling Liu
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
High-performance analysis of big data demands more computing resources, forcing similar growth in computation cost. So, the challenge to the HPC system designers is providing not only high performance but also high performance at lower cost. For high performance yet cost-effective cyberinfrastructure, we propose a new system model augmenting Amdahl's second law for balanced system to optimize price-performance-ratio. We express the optimal balance among CPU-speed, I/O-bandwidth and DRAM-size (i.e., Amdahl's I/O-and memory-number) in terms of application characteristics and hardware cost. Considering Xeon processor and recent hardware prices, we showed that a system needs almost 0.17GBPS I/O-bandwidth and 3GB DRAM per …

Coflourish: An Sdn-Assisted Coflow Scheduling Framework For Clouds, Chui Hui Chiu, Dipak Kumar Singh, Qingyang Wang, Seung Jong Park
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Existing coflow scheduling frameworks effectively shorten communication time and completion time of cluster applications. However, existing frameworks only consider available bandwidth on hosts and overlook congestion in the network when making scheduling decisions. Through extensive simulations using the realistic workload probability distribution from Facebook, we observe the performance degradation of the state-of-the-art coflow scheduling framework, Varys, in the cloud environment on a shared data center network (DCN) because of the lack of network congestion information. We propose Coflourish, the first coflow scheduling framework that exploits the congestion feedback assistances from the software-defined-networking (SDN)-enabled switches in the networks for available bandwidth …
Security, Computation And Data Issues In Clouds, Lifeng Li
Security, Computation And Data Issues In Clouds, Lifeng Li
Student Theses and Dissertations
Recently, Cloud has become quite attractive due to its elasticity, availability, and scalability. However, the technologies such as virtualization build up Cloud appear like a double-edged sword because of the expansion on attacking surfaces to entire hardware-software stack. Moreover, homogeneous computing in Cloud severely limits the computational power it could potentially provide. As a result, it is strongly desired to have new and comprehensive solutions to take in all benefits from Cloud and suppress backsides. This thesis proposes three new solutions to address security, computation and data issues in Cloud. Firstly, a GPU MapReduce framework specifically aims at improving performance …

Graphh: High Performance Big Graph Analytics In Small Clusters, Peng Sun, Yonggang Wen, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Xiaokui Xiao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
It is common for real-world applications to analyze big graphs using distributed graph processing systems. Popular in-memory systems require an enormous amount of resources to handle big graphs. While several out-of-core approaches have been proposed for processing big graphs on disk, the high disk I/O overhead could significantly reduce performance. In this paper, we propose GraphH to enable highperformance big graph analytics in small clusters. Specifically, we design a two-stage graph partition scheme to evenly divide the input graph into partitions, and propose a GAB (GatherApply-Broadcast) computation model to make each worker process a partition in memory at a time. …

JoanAudit is a static analysis tool to assist security auditors in auditing Web applications and Web services for common injection vulnerabilities during software development. It automatically identifies parts of the program code that are relevant for security and generates an HTML report to guide security auditors audit the source code in a scalable way. JoanAudit is configured with various security-sensitive input sources and sinks relevant to injection vulnerabilities and standard sanitization procedures that prevent these vulnerabilities. It can also automatically fix some cases of vulnerabilities in source code — cases where inputs are directly used in sinks without any form …
A System For Stratified Sampling Of Entity Resolution Results To Assess And Improve Accuracy With Minimal Clerical Review Effort, Daniel L. Pullen
A System For Stratified Sampling Of Entity Resolution Results To Assess And Improve Accuracy With Minimal Clerical Review Effort, Daniel L. Pullen
Theses and Dissertations
Organizations across many industries from banking to medicine depend on master data that describe their customers, products and services. Data integration and unique representations of master data are supported by Entity Resolution processes to link records for the same master entity. Master data is key to the core operations of these organizations. Unfortunately, many of these organizations do not use a systematic method, or in some cases, use no method for measuring and improving the quality of record linkage provided by Entity Resolution. This research presents an implementation and proposed methodology for routinely and systematically measuring the quality of Entity …
A Digital Practice Tool For Chemical Resonance, Kimball Jaclyn
A Digital Practice Tool For Chemical Resonance, Kimball Jaclyn
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Digital practice tools support online learning in math, language, computer science, and other subjects, but practice with problems whose answers are not well represented by text or quantities is underrepresented in the digital learning ecosystem beyond multiple-choice questions. This thesis project explored an alternative to multiple choice practice problems in organic chemistry that does not rely on a molecule drawing interface. This project included development and evaluation of a proof-of-concept digital practice tool for chemical resonance problems. Results of a utility study strongly suggest that the practice tool could fill a learning niche within organic chemistry practice as part of …
Sequential Schemes For Frequentist Estimation Of Properties In Statistical Model Checking, Cyrille Jegourel, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong
Sequential Schemes For Frequentist Estimation Of Properties In Statistical Model Checking, Cyrille Jegourel, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Statistical Model Checking (SMC) is an approximate verification method that overcomes the state space explosion problem for probabilistic systems by Monte Carlo simulations. Simulations might be however costly if many samples are required. It is thus necessary to implement efficient algorithms to reduce the sample size while preserving precision and accuracy. In the literature, some sequential schemes have been provided for the estimation of property occurrence based on predefined confidence and absolute or relative error. Nevertheless, these algorithms remain conservative and may result in huge sample sizes if the required precision standards are demanding. In this article, we compare some …

The concept of automating the testing of software-intensive systems has been around for decades, but the practice of automating testing is scarce in many industries, especially in the government defense sector. A one-year project initiated by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), Scientific Test and Analysis Techniques Center of Excellence (STAT COE) and sponsored by Navy OPNAV N94 set out to:
- study the degree to which the Department of Defense (DoD) has adopted automated software testing (AST);
- share the best software practices used by industry; and
-
develop and distribute an AST implementation guide intended for program management and …
Lung Ct Radiomics: An Overview Of Using Images As Data, Samuel Hunt Hawkins
Lung Ct Radiomics: An Overview Of Using Images As Data, Samuel Hunt Hawkins
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States and worldwide. Early detection of lung cancer can help improve patient outcomes, and survival prediction can inform plans of treatment. By extracting quantitative features from computed tomography scans of lung cancer, predictive models can be built that can achieve both early detection and survival prediction. To build these predictive models, first a detected lung nodule is segmented, then image features are extracted, and finally a model can be built utilizing image features to make predictions. These predictions can help radiologists improve cancer care.
Building predictive models based …
Improving Speech Recognition For Interviews With Both Clean And Telephone Speech, Sung Woo Choi
Improving Speech Recognition For Interviews With Both Clean And Telephone Speech, Sung Woo Choi
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
High quality automatic speech recognition (ASR) depends on the context of the speech. Cleanly recorded speech has better results than speech recorded over telephone lines. In telephone speech, the signal is band-pass filtered which limits frequencies available for computation. Consequently, the transmitted speech signal may be distorted by noise, causing higher word error rates (WER). The main goal of this research project is to examine approaches to improve recognition of telephone speech while maintaining or improving results for clean speech in mixed telephone-clean speech recordings, by reducing mismatches between the test data and the available models. The test data includes …

Understanding how the brain encodes information and performs computation requires statistical and functional analysis. Given the complexity of the human brain, simple methods that facilitate the interpretation of statistical correlations among different brain regions can be very useful. In this report we introduce a numerical correlation measure that may serve the interpretation of correlational neuronal data, and may assist in the evaluation of different brain states. The description of the dynamical brain system, through a global numerical measure may indicate the presence of an action principle which may facilitate a application of physics principles in the study of the human …
Impacts Of Java Language Features On The Memory Performances Of Android Apps, Yoonsik Cheon, Adriana Escobar De La Torre
Impacts Of Java Language Features On The Memory Performances Of Android Apps, Yoonsik Cheon, Adriana Escobar De La Torre
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Android apps are written in Java, but unlike Java applications they are resource-constrained in storage capacity and battery lifetime. In this document, we perform an experiment to measure quantitatively the impact of Java language and standard API features on the memory efficiency of Android apps. We focus on garbage collection because it is a critical process for performance affecting user experience. We learned that even Java language constructs and standard application programming interfaces (APIs) may be a source of a performance problem causing a significant memory overhead for Android apps. Any critical section of code needs to be scrutinized on …

We propose and compare combinations of several methods for classifying transportation activity data from smartphone GPS and accelerometer sensors. We have two main objectives. First, we aim to classify our data as accurately as possible. Second, we aim to reduce the dimensionality of the data as much as possible in order to reduce the computational burden of the classification. We combine dimension reduction and classification algorithms and compare them with a metric that balances accuracy and dimensionality. In doing so, we develop a classification algorithm that accurately classifies five different modes of transportation (i.e., walking, biking, car, bus and rail) …

Need For A Large-N Array (And Wavelets And Differences) To Determine The Assumption-Free 3-D Earth Model, Solymar Ayala Cortez, Aaron A. Velasco, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
One of the main objectives of geophysical seismic analysis is to determine the Earth's structure. Usually, to determine this structure, geophysicists supplement the measurement results with additional geophysical assumptions. An important question is: when is it possible to reconstruct the Earth's structure uniquely based on the measurement results only, without the need to use any additional assumptions? In this paper, we show that for this, one needs to use large-N arrays -- 2-D arrays of seismic sensors. To actually perform this reconstruction, we need to use differences between measurements by neighboring sensor and we need to apply wavelet analysis to …

Possession Of Child Exploitation Material In Computer Temporary Internet Cache, Sungmi Park, Yunsik Jake Jang, Joshua I. James
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
When considering the possession of child exploitation material U.S. and German courts have the same focus, but slightly different interpretations. This slight difference in interpretation could mean that in one country a defendant will be found guilty of possession while in the other country he or she could be found not guilty. In this work we examine the standards courts in Germany and the United States have used to combat child pornography, and analyze the approaches specifically related to viewing and possession of CEM. A uniform solution is suggested that criminalizes “knowing access with the intention to view” as a …

Digital Forensics is one of the latest challenges for the use of forensics in the investigative process in the United States. Some of the challenges are created by conditions and circumstances present for law enforcement around the world. However, many are unique to the United States and created by the standards of evidence within our courts, nature of our law enforcement organizations, and structure of our judicial and prosecutorial systems. It is essential for the preservation of public security and individual safety that competent systems of digital forensics are developed for law enforcement at all levels. The failure to do …
