Cross-Modal Recipe Retrieval With Rich Food Attributes, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua
Cross-Modal Recipe Retrieval With Rich Food Attributes, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Food is rich of visible (e.g., colour, shape) and procedural (e.g., cutting, cooking) attributes. Proper leveraging of these attributes, particularly the interplay among ingredients, cutting and cooking methods, for health-related applications has not been previously explored. This paper investigates cross-modal retrieval of recipes, specifically to retrieve a text-based recipe given a food picture as query. As similar ingredient composition can end up with wildly different dishes depending on the cooking and cutting procedures, the difficulty of retrieval originates from fine-grained recognition of rich attributes from pictures. With a multi-task deep learning model, this paper provides insights on the feasibility of …

Jsforce: A Forced Execution Engine For Malicious Javascript Detection, Xunchao Hu, Yao Cheng, Yue Duan, Andrew Henderson, Heng Yin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The drastic increase of JavaScript exploitation attacks has led to a strong interest in developing techniques to analyze malicious JavaScript. Existing analysis techniques fall into two general categories: static analysis and dynamic analysis. Static analysis tends to produce inaccurate results (both false positive and false negative) and is vulnerable to a wide series of obfuscation techniques. Thus, dynamic analysis is constantly gaining popularity for exposing the typical features of malicious JavaScript. However, existing dynamic analysis techniques possess limitations such as limited code coverage and incomplete environment setup, leaving a broad attack surface for evading the detection. To overcome these limitations, …
Ideas And Graphs, Martin Zwick
Ideas And Graphs, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
A graph can specify the skeletal structure of an idea, onto which meaning can be added by interpreting the structure.
This paper considers graphs (but not hypergraphs) consisting of four nodes, and suggests meanings that can be associated with several different directed and undirected graphs.
Drawing on Bennett's "systematics," specifically on the Tetrad that systematics offers as a model of 'activity,' the analysis here shows that the Tetrad is versatile model of problem-solving, regulation and control, and other processes.

Automatic Music Transcription With Convolutional Neural Networks Using Intuitive Filter Shapes, Jonathan Sleep
Automatic Music Transcription With Convolutional Neural Networks Using Intuitive Filter Shapes, Jonathan Sleep
Master's Theses
This thesis explores the challenge of automatic music transcription with a combination of digital signal processing and machine learning methods. Automatic music transcription is important for musicians who can't do it themselves or find it tedious. We start with an existing model, designed by Sigtia, Benetos and Dixon, and develop it in a number of original ways. We find that by using convolutional neural networks with filter shapes more tailored for spectrogram data, we see better and faster transcription results when evaluating the new model on a dataset of classical piano music. We also find that employing better practices shows …

Computational Modeling For Abnormal Brain Tissue Segmentation, Brain Tumor Tracking, And Grading, Syed Mohammad Shamin Reza
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation proposes novel texture feature-based computational models for quantitative analysis of abnormal tissues in two neurological disorders: brain tumor and stroke. Brain tumors are the cells with uncontrolled growth in the brain tissues and one of the major causes of death due to cancer. On the other hand, brain strokes occur due to the sudden interruption of the blood supply which damages the normal brain tissues and frequently causes death or persistent disability. Clinical management of these brain tumors and stroke lesions critically depends on robust quantitative analysis using different imaging modalities including Magnetic Resonance (MR) and Digital Pathology …

A Comparative Study On Machine Learning Algorithms For Network Defense, Abdinur Ali, Yen-Hung Hu, Chung-Chu (George) Hsieh, Mushtaq Khan
Virginia Journal of Science
Network security specialists use machine learning algorithms to detect computer network attacks and prevent unauthorized access to their networks. Traditionally, signature and anomaly detection techniques have been used for network defense. However, detection techniques must adapt to keep pace with continuously changing security attacks. Therefore, machine learning algorithms always learn from experience and are appropriate tools for this adaptation. In this paper, ten machine learning algorithms were trained with the KDD99 dataset with labels, then they were tested with a different dataset without labels. The researchers investigate the speed and the efficiency of these machine learning algorithms in terms of …
A Statistical Prior For Photo Forensics: Object Removal, Wei Fan, Hany Farid
A Statistical Prior For Photo Forensics: Object Removal, Wei Fan, Hany Farid
Computer Science Technical Reports
If we consider photo forensics within a Bayesian framework, then the probability that an image has been manipulated given the results of a forensic test can be expressed as a product of a likelihood term (the probability of a forensic test detecting manipulation given that an image was manipulated) and a prior term (the probability that an image was manipulated). Despite the success of many forensic techniques, the incorporation of a statistical prior has not been previously considered. We describe a framework for incorporating statistical priors into any forensic analysis and specifically address the problem of quantifying the probability that …

In this paper we examine the case of Tay, the Microsoft AI chatbot that was launched in March, 2016. After less than 24 hours, Microsoft shut down the experiment because the chatbot was generating tweets that were judged to be inappropriate since they included racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic language. We contend that the case of Tay illustrates a problem with the very nature of learning software (LS is a term that describes any software that changes its program in response to its interactions) that interacts directly with the public, and the developer’s role and responsibility associated with it. We make …

Streaming Vr For Immersion: Quality Aspects Of Compressed Spatial Audio, Miroslaw Narbutt, Sean O’Leary, Andrew Allen, Jan Skoglund, Andrew Hines
Conference papers
Delivering a 360-degree soundscape that matches full sphere visuals is an essential aspect of immersive VR. Ambisonics is a full sphere surround sound technique that takes into account the azimuth and elevation of sound sources, portraying source location above and below as well as around the horizontal plane of the listener. In contrast to channel-based methods, ambisonics representation offers the advantage of being independent of a specific loudspeaker set-up. Streaming ambisonics over networks requires efficient encoding techniques that compress the raw audio content without compromising quality of experience (QoE). This work investigates the effect of audio channel compression via the …

The Double-Edged Sword: A Mixed Methods Study Of The Interplay Between Bipolar Disorder And Technology Use, Mark Matthews, Elizabeth Murnane, Jaime Snyder, Shion Guha, Pamara Chang, Gavin Doherty, Geri K. Gay
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Human behavior is increasingly reflected or acted out through technology. This is of particular salience when it comes to changes in behavior associated with serious mental illnesses including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Early detection is crucial for these conditions but presently very challenging to achieve. Potentially, characteristics of these conditions' traits and symptoms, at both idiosyncratic and collective levels, may be detectable through technology use patterns. In bipolar disorder specifically, initial evidence associates changes in mood with changes in technology-mediated communication patterns. However much less is known about how people with bipolar disorder use technology more generally in their lives, …
On Congruence Lattices Of Nilsemigroups, Alexander L. Popovich, Peter R. Jones
On Congruence Lattices Of Nilsemigroups, Alexander L. Popovich, Peter R. Jones
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
We prove that the congruence lattice of a nilsemigroup is modular if and only if the width of the semigroup, as a poset, is at most two, and distributive if and only if its width is one. In the latter case, such semigroups therefore coincide with the nil Δ">Δ Δ -semigroups. It is further shown that if a finitely generated nilsemigroup has modular congruence lattice, then the semigroup is finite.
Time Reversed Smoke Simulation, Jeremy Michael Oborn
Time Reversed Smoke Simulation, Jeremy Michael Oborn
Theses and Dissertations
Physics-based fluid simulation often produces unpredictable behavior that is difficult for artists to control. We present a new method for art directing smoke animation using time reversed simulation. Given a final fluid configuration, our method steps backward in time generating a sequence that, when played forward, is visually similar to traditional forward simulations. This will give artists better control by allowing them to start from any timestep of the simulation. We address a number of challenges associated with time reversal including generating a believable final configuration and reversing entropy.

Today, nearly 1 in 5 people have a disability that affects their daily life. These varied disabilities can include blindness, low vision or mobility impairments. When interacting with web content, users with such disabilities rely heavily on various assistive technologies, such as screen readers, keyboard, voice recognition software, etc. Here, assistive technologies are software applications or hardware devices that allows users with disabilities to interact with web and software applications. For instance, a screen reader is a software application that navigates through the page and speaks the content to users. Web accessibility is defined as the ability for assistive technology …
Metamorphic Code Generation Using Llvm, Michael Crawford
Metamorphic Code Generation Using Llvm, Michael Crawford
Master's Projects
Each instance of metamorphic software changes its internal structure, but the function remains essentially the same. Such metamorphism has been used primarily by malware writers as a means of evading signature-based detection. However, metamorphism also has potential beneficial uses in fields related to software protection. In this research, we develop a practical framework within the LLVM compiler that automatically generates metamorphic code, where the user has well-defined control over the degree of morphing applied to the code. We analyze the effectiveness of this metamorphic generator based on Hidden Markov Model (HMM) analysis, and discover that HMMs are effective at detection …
Implementation Of Faceted Values In Node.Js., Andrew Kalenda
Implementation Of Faceted Values In Node.Js., Andrew Kalenda
Master's Projects
Information flow analysis is the study of mechanisms by which developers may protect sensitive data within an ecosystem containing untrusted third-party code. Secure multi-execution is one such mechanism that reliably prevents undesirable information flows, but a programmer’s use of secure multi-execution is itself challenging and prone to error. Faceted values have been shown to provide an alternative to secure multi-execution which is, in theory, functionally equivalent. The purpose of this work is to show that the theory holds in practice by implementing usable faceted values in JavaScript via source code transformation. The primary contribution of this project is to provide …

Detecting Encrypted Malware Using Hidden Markov Models, Dhiviya Dhanasekar
Master's Projects
Encrypted code is often present in some types of advanced malware, while such code virtually never appears in legitimate applications. Hence, the presence of encrypted code within an executable file could serve as a strong heuristic for detecting malware. In this research, we consider the feasibility of detecting encrypted code using hidden Markov models.
Measuring The Effectiveness Of Generic Malware Models, Naman Bagga
Measuring The Effectiveness Of Generic Malware Models, Naman Bagga
Master's Projects
Malware detection based on machine learning techniques is often treated as a problem specific to a particular malware family. In such cases, detection involves training and testing models for each malware family. This approach can generally achieve high accuracy, but it requires many classification steps, resulting in a slow, inefficient, and impractical process. In contrast, classifying samples as malware or be- nign based on a single model would be far more efficient. However, such an approach is extremely challenging—extracting common features from a variety of malware fam- ilies might result in a model that is too generic to be useful. …
Word Sense Determination From Wikipedia Data Using Neural Networks, Qiao Liu
Word Sense Determination From Wikipedia Data Using Neural Networks, Qiao Liu
Master's Projects
Many words have multiple meanings. For example, “plant” can mean a type of living organism or a factory. Being able to determine the sense of such words is very useful in natural language processing tasks, such as speech synthesis, question answering, and machine translation. For the project described in this report, we used a modular model to classify the sense of words to be disambiguated. This model consisted of two parts: The first part was a neural-network-based language model to compute continuous vector representations of words from data sets created from Wikipedia pages. The second part classified the meaning of …

Multi Language Browser Support, Swapnil Mohan Patil
Master's Projects
Web browsers have become an increasingly appealing platform for application developers. Browsers make it relatively easy to deliver cross-platform applications. Web browsers have become a de facto universal operating system, and JavaScript its instruction set. Unfortunately, executing any other language than JavaScript in web browser is not usually possible. Previous approaches are either non-portable or demand extensive modifications for programs to work in the browser. Translation to JavaScript (JS) is one option but that can be challenging if the language is sufficiently different from JS. Also, debugging translated applications can be difficult. This paper presents how languages like Scheme and …

High-Order Relaxed Multirate Infinitesimal Step Methods For Multiphysics Applications, Jean Sexton
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
In this work, we consider numerical methods for integrating multirate ordinary differential equations. We are interested in the development of new multirate methods with good stability properties and improved efficiency over existing methods. We discuss the development of multirate methods, particularly focusing on those that are based on Runge-Kutta theory. We introduce the theory of Generalized Additive Runge-Kutta methods proposed by Sandu and Günther. We also introduce the theory of Recursive Flux Splitting Multirate Methods with Sub-cycling described by Schlegel, as well as the Multirate Infinitesimal Step methods this work is based on. We propose a generic structure called Flexible …

Fastshrinkage: Perceptually-Aware Retargeting Toward Mobile Platforms, Zhenguang Liu, Zepeng Wang, Luming Zhang, Rajiv Ratn Shah, Yingjie Xia, Yi Yang, Wei Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Retargeting aims at adapting an original high-resolution photo/video to a low-resolution screen with an arbitrary aspect ratio. Conventional approaches are generally based on desktop PCs, since the computation might be intolerable for mobile platforms (especially when retargeting videos). Besides, only low-level visual features are exploited typically, whereas human visual perception is not well encoded. In this paper, we propose a novel retargeting framework which fast shrinks photo/video by leveraging human gaze behavior. Specifically, we first derive a geometry-preserved graph ranking algorithm, which efficiently selects a few salient object patches to mimic human gaze shifting path (GSP) when viewing each scenery. …

Online reviews are prevalent. When recounting their experience with a product, service, or venue, in addition to textual narration, a reviewer frequently includes images as photographic record. While textual sentiment analysis has been widely studied, in this paper we are interested in visual sentiment analysis to infer whether a given image included as part of a review expresses the overall positive or negative sentiment of that review. Visual sentiment analysis can be formulated as image classification using deep learning methods such as Convolutional Neural Networks or CNN. However, we observe that the sentiment captured within an image may be affected …

Virtualized Baseband Units Consolidation In Advanced Lte Networks Using Mobility- And Power-Aware Algorithms, Uladzimir Karneyenka
Master's Projects
Virtualization of baseband units in Advanced Long-Term Evolution networks and a rapid performance growth of general purpose processors naturally raise the interest in resource multiplexing. The concept of resource sharing and management between virtualized instances is not new and extensively used in data centers. We adopt some of the resource management techniques to organize virtualized baseband units on a pool of hosts and investigate the behavior of the system in order to identify features which are particularly relevant to mobile environment. Subsequently, we introduce our own resource management algorithm specifically targeted to address some of the peculiarities identified by experimental …
