Hierarchical Fusion Based Deep Learning Framework For Lung Nodule Classification, Kazim Sekeroglu
Hierarchical Fusion Based Deep Learning Framework For Lung Nodule Classification, Kazim Sekeroglu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Lung cancer is the leading cancer type that causes the mortality in both men and women. Computer aided detection (CAD) and diagnosis systems can play a very important role for helping the physicians in cancer treatments. This dissertation proposes a CAD framework that utilizes a hierarchical fusion based deep learning model for detection of nodules from the stacks of 2D images. In the proposed hierarchical approach, a decision is made at each level individually employing the decisions from the previous level. Further, individual decisions are computed for several perspectives of a volume of interest (VOI). This study explores three different …

Phylogeny Analysis From Gene-Order Data With Massive Duplications, Lingxi Zhou, Yu Ling, Bing Feng, Jieyi Zhao, Jijun Tang
Faculty Publications
Background: Gene order changes, under rearrangements, insertions, deletions and duplications, have been used as a new type of data source for phylogenetic reconstruction. Because these changes are rare compared to sequence mutations, they allow the inference of phylogeny further back in evolutionary time. There exist many computational methods for the reconstruction of gene-order phylogenies, including widely used maximum parsimonious methods and maximum likelihood methods. However, both methods face challenges in handling large genomes with many duplicated genes, especially in the presence of whole genome duplication.
Methods: In this paper, we present three simple yet powerful methods based on maximum-likelihood (ML) …
Large Scale Entity Identity Management Distributed Processing Strategies Utilizing Multiple Blocking Keys, Reed H. Petty
Large Scale Entity Identity Management Distributed Processing Strategies Utilizing Multiple Blocking Keys, Reed H. Petty
Theses and Dissertations
Entity Resolution (ER) can be characterized as the process by which various records (references) become linked to the entities (identities) with which they related. The ER process becomes exponentially more complex and time consuming as datasets approach “Big Data” volumes. Datasets that are beyond the ER capabilities of even the most powerful computers are no longer unusual. The overarching objective is to significantly reduce the amount of elapsed time required to achieve all aspects of the ER life cycle when contrasted with conventional implementations and algorithms. Reductions approaching an order of magnitude are conceivable. Reductions in Big Data ER from …

Using Tablet Technologies To Engage And Motivate Urban High School Students, Nicol R. Howard, Keith Howard
Education Faculty Articles and Research
In this two-year study, researchers examined the impact of using tablet technologies across content areas in an urban high school setting. Class observations provided notable examples of how student motivation and learning appeared to be enhanced by use of the iPads in conjunction with opportunities to collaborate and be creative in the context of their learning. Interviews from a set of teachers with a range of classroom teaching experience provided multiple perspectives of the program’s impact. The opportunity for teachers and students to have the flexibility to select the apps they believe achieve curricular and/or learning goals supports the shift …
Healthcare It In Skilled Nursing And Post-Acute Care Facilities: Reducing Hospital Admissions And Re-Admissions, Improving Reimbursement And Improving Clinical Operations, Scott L. Hopes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Health information technology (HIT), which includes electronic health record (EHR) systems and clinical data analytics, has become a major component of all health care delivery and care management. The adoption of HIT by physicians, hospitals, post-acute care organizations, pharmacies and other health care providers has been accepted as a necessary (and recently, a government required) step toward improved quality, care coordination and reduced costs: “Better coordination of care provides a path to improving communication, improving quality of care, and reducing unnecessary emergency room use and hospital readmissions. LTPAC providers play a critical role in achieving these goals” (HealthIT.gov, 2013).

Deniable Encryption Storage For Mobile Devices, Bo Chen
Deniable Encryption Storage For Mobile Devices, Bo Chen
TechTalks
I will introduce the progress of our work in building deniable storage systems for mobile devices. Generally, we rely on encryption to protect confidentiality of sensitive data. This conventional approach, however, is vulnerable to a coercive attack, in which the attacker may capture the device’s owner and coerce the owner to disclose the decryption key. We mitigate such a coercive attack by leveraging deniable encryption, to deny the existence of sensitive data even though the decryption key is compromised. This is extremely useful when a professional journalist or human rights worker collects criminal evidence using his/her mobile device in a …
Mean Square Consistency On Numerical Solutions Of Stochastic Wave Equation With Cubic Nonlinearities On 2d Rectangles, Haziem M. Hazaimeh
Mean Square Consistency On Numerical Solutions Of Stochastic Wave Equation With Cubic Nonlinearities On 2d Rectangles, Haziem M. Hazaimeh
All Works
© The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017. In this article we study the mean square consistency on numerical solutions of stochastic wave equations with cubic nonlinearities on two dimensional rectangles. In [8], we proved that the strong Fourier solution of these semi-linear wave equations exists and is unique on an appropriate Hilbert space. A linear-implicit Euler method is used to discretize the related Fourier coefficients. We prove that the linear-implicit Euler method applied to a solution of nonlinear stochastic wave equations in two dimensions is mean square consistency under the geometric condition.
Gradient Descent Localization In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nuha A.S. Alwan, Zahir M. Hussain
Gradient Descent Localization In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nuha A.S. Alwan, Zahir M. Hussain
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Meaningful information sharing between the sensors of a wireless sensor network (WSN) necessitates node localization, especially if the information to be shared is the location itself, such as in warehousing and information logistics. Trilateration and multilateration positioning methods can be employed in two-dimensional and threedimensional space respectively. These methods use distance measurements and analytically estimate the target location; they suffer from decreased accuracy and computational complexity especially in the three-dimensional case. Iterative optimization methods, such as gradient descent (GD), offer an attractive alternative and enable moving target tracking as well. This chapter focuses on positioning in three dimensions using time-of-arrival …

Even though indoor smoking ban is being put into practice in civilized countries, existing vision or sensor-based smoking detection methods cannot provide ubiquitous detection service. In this paper, we take the first attempt to build a ubiquitous passive smoking detection system, Smokey, which leverages the patterns smoking leaves on WiFi signal to identify the smoking activity even in the non-line-of-sight and throughwall environments. We study the behaviors of smokers and leverage the common features to recognize the series of motions during smoking, avoiding the target-dependent training set to achieve the high accuracy. We design a foreground detectionbased motion acquisition method …

Abstract— A key challenge in the automatic verification of robot mission software, especially critical mission software, is to be able to effectively model the performance of a human operator and factor that into the formal performance guarantees for the mission. We present a novel approach to modelling the skill level of the operator and integrating it into automatic verification using a linear Gaussians model parameterized by experimental calibration. Our approach allows us to model different skill levels directly in terms of the behavior of the lumped, robot plus operator, system.

Annotation Of Multimedia Learning Materials For Semantic Search, Sheetal Rajgure
Dissertations
Multimedia is the main source for online learning materials, such as videos, slides and textbooks, and its size is growing with the popularity of online programs offered by Universities and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The increasing amount of multimedia learning resources available online makes it very challenging to browse through the materials or find where a specific concept of interest is covered. To enable semantic search on the lecture materials, their content must be annotated and indexed. Manual annotation of learning materials such as videos is tedious and cannot be envisioned for the growing quantity of online materials. One …

What Does Explainable Ai Really Mean? A New Conceptualization Of Perspectives, Derek Doran, Sarah Schulz, Tarek R. Besold
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
We characterize three notions of explainable AI that cut across research fields: opaque systems that offer no insight into its algo- rithmic mechanisms; interpretable systems where users can mathemat- ically analyze its algorithmic mechanisms; and comprehensible systems that emit symbols enabling user-driven explanations of how a conclusion is reached. The paper is motivated by a corpus analysis of NIPS, ACL, COGSCI, and ICCV/ECCV paper titles showing differences in how work on explainable AI is positioned in various fields. We close by introducing a fourth notion: truly explainable systems, where automated reasoning is central to output crafted explanations without requiring human …

Social media is rapidly becoming the main source of news consumption for users, raising significant challenges to news aggregation and recommendation tasks. One of these challenges concerns the recommendation of very recent news. To tackle this problem, approaches to the prediction of news popularity have been proposed. In this paper, we study the task of predicting news popularity upon their publication, when social feedback is unavailable or scarce, and to use such predictions to produce news rankings. Unlike previous work, we focus on accurately predicting highly popular news. Such cases are rare, causing known issues for standard prediction models and …

Teaching Image Processing And Visualization Principles To Medicine Students, Christina Gillmann, Thomas Wischgoll, Jose T. Hernandez, Hans Hagen
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Although image processing becomes increasingly important in most applications such as medicine, image processing and visualization is usually not a part of the medical education and therefore not widely spread in clinical daily routine. Contrary to students from computer science, medical students are usually not familiar to computational models or algorithms and require a different view of the algorithms instead of knowing each computational detail. To solve this problem this paper presents the concept of a lecture that aims to impart image processing and visualization principals for students in medicine in order to pioneer a higher acceptance and propagation of …

Power-Efficient And Highly Scalable Parallel Graph Sampling Using Fpgas, Usman Tariq, Umer Cheema, Fahad Saeed
Parallel Computing and Data Science Lab Technical Reports
Energy efficiency is a crucial problem in data centers where big data is generally represented by directed or undirected graphs. Analysis of this big data graph is challenging due to volume and velocity of the data as well as irregular memory access patterns. Graph sampling is one of the most effective ways to reduce the size of graph while maintaining crucial characteristics. In this paper we present design and implementation of an FPGA based graph sampling method which is both time- and energy-efficient. This is in contrast to existing parallel approaches which include memory-distributed clusters, multicore and GPUs. Our …

Usable Secure Email Through Short-Lived Keys, Tyler Jay Monson
Theses and Dissertations
Participants from recent secure email user studies have expressed a need to use secure email tools only a few times a year. At the same time, Internet users are expressing concerns over the permanence of personal information on the Internet. Support for short-lived keys has the potential to address both of these problems. However, the short-lived keys usability and security space is underdeveloped and unexplored. In this thesis, we present an exploration of the short-lived keys usability and security design space. We implement both a short-lived keys and a long-term keys secure email prototype. With these two prototypes, we conduct …
