A Verification Framework For Stateful Security Protocols, Li Li, Naipeng Dong, Jun Pang, Jun Sun, Guangdong Bai, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A long-standing research problem is how to efficiently verify security protocols with tamper-resistant global states, especially when the global states evolve unboundedly. We propose a protocol specification framework, which facilitates explicit modeling of states and state transformations. On the basis of that, we develop an algorithm for verifying security properties of protocols with unbounded state-evolving, by tracking state transformation and checking the validity of the state-evolving traces. We prove the correctness of the verification algorithm, implement both of the specification framework and the algorithm, and evaluate our implementation using a number of stateful security protocols. The experimental results show that …

Intensive longitudinal and cluster-correlated data (ILCCD) can be generated in any situation where numerical or categorical characteristics of multiple individuals or study units are observed and measured at tens, hundreds, or thousands of occasions. The spacing of measurements in time for each individual can be regular or irregular, fixed or random, and the number of characteristics measured at each occasion may be few or many. Such data can also arise in situations involving continuous-time measurements of recurrent events. Generalized linear models (GLMs) are usually considered for the analysis of correlated non-normal data, while multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) is another …

On Demonstrating The Impact Of Defeasible Reasoning Via A Multi-Layer Argument-Based Framework (Doctoral Consortium), Lucas Middeldorf Rizzo
Conference papers
Promising results have indicated Argumentation Theory as a solid research area for implementing defeasible reasoning in practice. However, applications are usually domain dependent, not incorporating all the layers and steps required in an argumentation process, thus limit- ing their applicability in different areas. This PhD project is focused on the development of a multi-layer defeasible argument-based framework which is in turn used across different applications in the fields of decision making and knowledge representation and reasoning. The inference produced is compared against the inference of different quantitative theories of reasoning under uncertainty such as expert systems and fuzzy logic. The …

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) propagation is known to be severely affected by the blockage of the line-of-sight (LoS) path. In contrast to microwave systems, at shorter mmWave wavelengths such blockage can be caused by human bodies, where their mobility within environment makes wireless channel alternate between the blocked and non-blocked LoS states. Following the recent 3GPP requirements on modeling the dynamic blockage as well as the temporal consistency of the channel at mmWave frequencies, in this paper a new model for predicting the state of a user in the presence of mobile blockers for representative 3GPP scenarios is developed: urban micro cell …

Researchers, governments, and funding agencies are calling on research disciplines to embrace open data - data that is publicly accessible and usable beyond the original authors. The premise is that research efforts can draw and generate several benefits from open data, as such data might provide further insight, enabling the replication and extension of current knowledge in different contexts. These potential benefits, coupled with a global push towards open data policies, brings open data into the agenda of research disciplines – including Information Systems (IS). This paper responds to these developments as follows. We outline themes in the ongoing discussion …
Separating Markup From Text, Ronald I. Greenberg, George K. Thiruvathukal
Separating Markup From Text, Ronald I. Greenberg, George K. Thiruvathukal
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
As more and more online versions of Humanities texts are created, it is becoming commonplace to embed elaborate formatting, for example, through the use of HTML. But this can interfere with computerized analyses of the original text. While it may seem, at first, straightforward to simply strip markup from text, this is not the reality. Many digital texts add things that appear to be legitimate content according to the markup syntax, for example, line numbers, and even apart from this issue, existing tools for stripping markup produce inconsistent results. Apart from adopting and enforcing strict conventions for adding markup to …

Classification-Based Parameter Synthesis For Parametric Timed Automata, Jiaying Li, Jun Sun, Bo Gao, Étienne Andre
Classification-Based Parameter Synthesis For Parametric Timed Automata, Jiaying Li, Jun Sun, Bo Gao, Étienne Andre
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Parametric timed automata are designed to model timed systems with unknown parameters, often representing design uncertainties of external environments. In order to design a robust system, it is crucial to synthesize constraints on the parameters, which guarantee the system behaves according to certain properties. Existing approaches suffer from scalability issues. In this work, we propose to enhance existing approaches through classification-based learning. We sample multiple concrete values for parameters and model check the corresponding non-parametric models. Based on the checking results, we form conjectures on the constraint through classification techniques, which can be subsequently confirmed by existing model checkers for …

Spice: Secure Proximity-Based Infrastructure For Close Encounters, Aarathi Prasad, Xiaohui Liang, David Kotz
Spice: Secure Proximity-Based Infrastructure For Close Encounters, Aarathi Prasad, Xiaohui Liang, David Kotz
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present a crowdsourcing system that extends the capabilities of location-based applications and allows users to connect and exchange information with users in spatial and temporal proximity. We define this incident of spatio-temporal proximity as a \em close encounter. Typically, location-based application users store their information on a server, and trust the server to provide access only to authorized users, not misuse the data or disclose their location history. Our system, called SPICE, addresses these privacy issues by leveraging Wi-Fi access points to connect users and encrypt their information before it is exchanged, so only users in close encounters have …

Method We collect 2,374,474 records of activities in 37 popular projects, and 797,756 records of activities in 687 projects …
A Fast Trajectory Outlier Detection Approach Via Driving Behavior Modeling, Hao Wu, Weiwei Sun, Baihua Zheng
A Fast Trajectory Outlier Detection Approach Via Driving Behavior Modeling, Hao Wu, Weiwei Sun, Baihua Zheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Trajectory outlier detection is a fundamental building block for many location-based service (LBS) applications, with a large application base. We dedicate this paper on detecting the outliers from vehicle trajectories efficiently and effectively. In addition, we want our solution to be able to issue an alarm early when an outlier trajectory is only partially observed (i.e., the trajectory has not yet reached the destination). Most existing works study the problem on general Euclidean trajectories and require accesses to the historical trajectory database or computations on the distance metric that are very expensive. Furthermore, few of existing works consider some specific …

Exploratory analysis of a text corpus is an important task that can be aided by informative visualization. One spatially-oriented form of document visualization is a scatterplot, whereby every document is associated with a coordinate, and relationships among documents can be perceived through their spatial distances. Semantic visualization further infuses the visualization space with latent semantics, by incorporating a topic model that has a representation in the visualization space, allowing users to also perceive relationships between documents and topics spatially. We illustrate how a semantic visualization system called SemVis could be used to navigate a text corpus interactively and topically via …

The Impact Of Coverage On Bug Density In A Large Industrial Software Project, Thomas Bach, Artur Andrzejak, Ralf Pannemans, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Measuring quality of test suites is one of the major challenges of software testing. Code coverage identifies tested and untested parts of code and is frequently used to approximate test suite quality. Multiple previous studies have investigated the relationship between coverage ratio and test suite quality, without a clear consent in the results. In this work we study whether covered code contains a smaller number of future bugs than uncovered code (assuming appropriate scaling). If this correlation holds and bug density is lower in covered code, coverage can be regarded as a meaningful metric to estimate the adequacy of testing. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To devise efficient approaches and tools for detecting malicious packages in the Android ecosystem, researchers are increasingly required to have a deep understanding of malware. There is thus a need to provide a framework for dissecting malware and locating malicious program fragments within app code in order to build a comprehensive dataset of malicious samples. Towards addressing this need, we propose in this work a tool-based approach called HookRanker, which provides ranked lists of potentially malicious packages based on the way malware behaviour code is triggered. With experiments on a ground truth of piggybacked apps, we are able to automatically …

The prevalence of questions and answers on domain-specific Q&A sites like Stack Overflow constitutes a core knowledge asset for software engineering domain. Although search engines can return a list of questions relevant to a user query of some technical question, the abundance of relevant posts and the sheer amount of information in them makes it difficult for developers to digest them and find the most needed answers to their questions. In this work, we aim to help developers who want to quickly capture the key points of several answer posts relevant to a technical question before they read the details …

As the carrier of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) knowledge, API documentation plays a crucial role in how developers learn and use an API. It is also a valuable information resource for answering API-related questions, especially when developers cannot find reliable answers to their questions online/offline. However, finding answers to API-related questions from API documentation might not be easy because one may have to manually go through multiple pages before reaching the relevant page, and then read and understand the information inside the relevant page to figure out the answers. To deal with this challenge, we develop APIBot, a bot that …

Learning to optimize AUC performance for classifying label imbalanced data in online scenarios has been extensively studied in recent years. Most of the existing work has attempted to address the problem directly in the original feature space, which may not suitable for non-linearly separable datasets. To solve this issue, some kernel-based learning methods are proposed for non-linearly separable datasets. However, such kernel approaches have been shown to be inefficient and failed to scale well on large scale datasets in practice. Taking this cue, in this work, we explore the use of scalable kernel-based learning techniques as surrogates to existing approaches: …

Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are unemployed at a high rate, in part because the constraints and expectations of traditional employment can be difficult for them. In this paper, we report on our work in introducing people with ASD to remote work on a crowdsourcing platform and a prototype tool we developed by working with participants. We conducted a six-week long user-centered design study with three participants with ASD. The early stage of the study focused on assessing the abilities of our participants to search and work on micro-tasks available on the crowdsourcing market. Based on our preliminary findings, …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Electroencephalography (EEG) signal based intent recognition has recently attracted much attention in both academia and industries, due to helping the elderly or motor-disabled people controlling smart devices to communicate with outer world. However, the utilization of EEG signals is challenged by low accuracy, arduous and time-consuming feature extraction. This paper proposes a 7-layer deep learning model to classify raw EEG signals with the aim of recognizing subjects’ intents, to avoid the time consumed in pre-processing and feature extraction. The hyper-parameters are selected by an Orthogonal Array experiment method for efficiency. Our model is applied to an open EEG dataset provided …

Tweet Geolocation: Leveraging Location, User And Peer Signals, Wen-Haw Chong, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Which venue is a tweet posted from? We referred this as fine-grained geolocation. To solve this problem effectively, we develop novel techniques to exploit each posting user's content history. This is motivated by our finding that most users do not share their visitation history, but have ample content history from tweet posts. We formulate fine-grained geolocation as a ranking problem whereby given a test tweet, we rank candidate venues. We propose several models that leverage on three types of signals from locations, users and peers. Firstly, the location signals are words that are indicative of venues. We propose a location-indicative …

An Integrated Framework For Modeling And Predicting Spatiotemporal Phenomena In Urban Environments, Tuc Viet Le
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This thesis proposes a general solution framework that integrates methods in machine learning in creative ways to solve a diverse set of problems arising in urban environments. It particularly focuses on modeling spatiotemporal data for the purpose of predicting urban phenomena. Concretely, the framework is applied to solve three specific real-world problems: human mobility prediction, trac speed prediction and incident prediction. For human mobility prediction, I use visitor trajectories collected a large theme park in Singapore as a simplified microcosm of an urban area. A trajectory is an ordered sequence of attraction visits and corresponding timestamps produced by a visitor. …
