Robotic Arts: Current Practices, Potentials, And Implications, Myounghoon "Philart" Jeon Jan 2017

Robotic Arts: Current Practices, Potentials, And Implications, Myounghoon "Philart" Jeon

Department of Psychology and Human Factors Publications

Given that the origin of the “robot” comes from efforts to create a worker to help people, there has been relatively little research on making a robot for non-work purposes. However, some researchers have explored robotic arts since Leonardo da Vinci. Many questions can be posed regarding the potentials of robotic arts: (1) Is there anything we can call machine-creativity? (2) Can robots improvise artworks on the fly? and (3) Can art robots pass the Turing test? To ponder these questions and see the current status quo of robotic arts, the present paper surveys the contributions of robotics in diverse …

Influences Of Visual And Auditory Displays On Aimed Movements Using Air Gesture Controls, Jason Sterkenburg, Steven Landry, Myounghoon Jeon Jan 2017

Influences Of Visual And Auditory Displays On Aimed Movements Using Air Gesture Controls, Jason Sterkenburg, Steven Landry, Myounghoon Jeon

Department of Psychology and Human Factors Publications

With the proliferation of technologies operated via in-air hand movements, e.g. virtual/augmented reality, in-vehicle infotainment systems, and large public information displays, there remains an open question about if/how auditory displays can be used effectively to facilitate eyes-free aimed movements. We conducted a within-subjects study, similar to a Fitts paradigm study, in which 24 participants completed simple aimed movements to acquire targets of varying sizes and distances. Participants completed these aimed movements for six conditions – each presenting a unique combination of visual and auditory displays. Results showed participants were generally faster to make selections when using visual displays compared to …

Stochastic Invariants For Probabilistic Termination, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Petr Novotný, Dorde Zikelic Jan 2017

Stochastic Invariants For Probabilistic Termination, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Petr Novotný, Dorde Zikelic

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Termination is one of the basic liveness properties, and we study the termination problem for probabilistic programs with real-valued variables. Previous works focused on the qualitative problem that asks whether an input program terminates with probability 1 (almost-sure termination). A powerful approach for this qualitative problem is the notion of ranking supermartingales with respect to a given set of invariants. The quantitative problem (probabilistic termination) asks for bounds on the termination probability, and this problem has not been addressed yet. A fundamental and conceptual drawback of the existing approaches to address probabilistic termination is that even though the supermartingales consider …

The Habits Of Highly Effective Researchers: An Empirical Study, Subhajit Datta, Partha Basuchowdhuri, Surajit Acharya, Subhashis Majumder

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Interest in the habits of influential individuals cuts across domains. As researchers, we are intrigued why few attain significant eminence in their fields, whereas many operate in obscurity. An empirical examination of this question has been made possible by the recent availability of large scale publication data. In this paper, we use information from the AMiner Paper Citation and Author Collaboration Networks to discern factors that relate to the impact of influential researchers across five domains in the computing discipline. We propose and apply a novel algorithm to identify influential vertices in co-authorship networks built from total corpora of 1,00,000+papers …

Research Strategies For Biomedical And Health Informatics: Some Thought-Provoking And Critical Proposals To Encourage Scientific Debate On The Nature Of Good Research In Medical Informatics, Reinhold Haux, Et Al. Jan 2017

Research Strategies For Biomedical And Health Informatics: Some Thought-Provoking And Critical Proposals To Encourage Scientific Debate On The Nature Of Good Research In Medical Informatics, Reinhold Haux, Et Al.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Medical informatics, or biomedical and health informatics (BMHI), has become an established scientific discipline. In all such disciplines there is a certain inertia to persist in focusing on well-established research areas and to hold on to well-known research methodologies rather than adopting new ones, which may be more appropriate. To search for answers to the following questions: What are research fields in informatics, which are not being currently adequately addressed, and which methodological approaches might be insufficiently used? Do we know about reasons? What could be consequences of change for research and for education? Outstanding informatics scientists were invited to …

Computational Fluid Dynamics In A Terminal Alveolated Bronchiole Duct With Expanding Walls: Proof-Of-Concept In Openfoam, Jeremy Myers Jan 2017

Computational Fluid Dynamics In A Terminal Alveolated Bronchiole Duct With Expanding Walls: Proof-Of-Concept In Openfoam, Jeremy Myers

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical Biology has found recent success applying Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to model airflow in the human lung. Detailed modeling of flow patterns in the alveoli, where the oxygen-carbon dioxide gas exchange occurs, has provided data that is useful in treating illnesses and designing drug-delivery systems. Unfortunately, many CFD software packages have high licensing fees that are out of reach for independent researchers. This thesis uses three open-source software packages, Gmsh, OpenFOAM, and ParaView, to design a mesh, create a simulation, and visualize the results of an idealized terminal alveolar sac model. This model successfully demonstrates that OpenFOAM can be …

Network Analytics For The Mirna Regulome And Mirna-Disease Interactions, Joseph Jayakar Nalluri Jan 2017

Network Analytics For The Mirna Regulome And Mirna-Disease Interactions, Joseph Jayakar Nalluri

Theses and Dissertations

miRNAs are non-coding RNAs of approx. 22 nucleotides in length that inhibit gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. By virtue of this gene regulation mechanism, miRNAs play a critical role in several biological processes and patho-physiological conditions, including cancers. miRNA behavior is a result of a multi-level complex interaction network involving miRNA-mRNA, TF-miRNA-gene, and miRNA-chemical interactions; hence the precise patterns through which a miRNA regulates a certain disease(s) are still elusive. Herein, I have developed an integrative genomics methods/pipeline to (i) build a miRNA regulomics and data analytics repository, (ii) create/model these interactions into networks and use optimization techniques, motif …

Online Hacker Forum Censorship: Would Banning The Bad Guys Attract Good Guys?, Qiu-Hong Wang, Le-Ting Zhang, Meng-Ke Qiao Jan 2017

Online Hacker Forum Censorship: Would Banning The Bad Guys Attract Good Guys?, Qiu-Hong Wang, Le-Ting Zhang, Meng-Ke Qiao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To tackle the ubiquitous cybersecurity threats, a few countries have enacted legislation to criminalize the production, distribution and possession of computer misuse tools. Consequently, online hacker forums, which enable the provision and dissemination of malicious cyber-attack techniques among potential hackers or technology-savvy users, are subject to censorship. This project examines the mixed impacts of online hacker forum censorship on users’ contribution to protection discussion through a natural experiment with large-scale content analysis. We find that while the enforcement indeed reduced the discussion on malicious cyber-attacks, the discussion on cybersecurity protection could increase or decrease in different scenarios. The rationale is …

On The Effectiveness Of Code-Reuse-Based Android Application Obfuscation, Xiaoxiao Tang, Yu Liang, Xinjie Ma, Yan Lin, Debin Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Attackers use reverse engineering techniques to gain detailed understanding of executable for malicious purposes, such as re-packaging an Android app to inject malicious code or advertising components. To make reverse engineering more difficult, researchers have proposed various code obfuscation techniques to conceal purposes or logic of code segments. One interesting idea of code obfuscation is to apply codereuse techniques (e.g., Return-Oriented Programming) to (re-)distribute essential code segments before they are reconstructed at runtime. Such techniques are well understood on x86 platform, but relatively less explored on Android. In this paper, we present an evaluation on the extent to which code-reuse-based …

Technology Mergers And Acquisitions In The Presence Of An Installed Base: A Strategic Analysis, Qiu-Hong Wang, Kai-Lung Hui Jan 2017

Technology Mergers And Acquisitions In The Presence Of An Installed Base: A Strategic Analysis, Qiu-Hong Wang, Kai-Lung Hui

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study the strategic benefits of M&A when competing IT vendors sell different generations of the same product with different quality. We assume the new product arrives unexpectedly when an installed base of old product exists. We show that the combination of consumers' purchase history and heterogeneity leads to new demand complexity that gives rise to innovative product strategies. We find that shelving the old product is an important motivation for M&A. The acquirer may exercise static or intertemporal price discrimination depending on whether it can exercise upgrade pricing. M&A may speed up or slow down new product consumption, and …

Exploring Representativeness And Informativeness For Active Learning, Bo Du, Zengmao Wang, Lefei Zhang, Liangpei Zhang, Wei Liu, Jialie Shen, Dacheng Tao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

How can we find a general way to choose the most suitable samples for training a classifier? Even with very limited prior information? Active learning, which can be regarded as an iterative optimization procedure, plays a key role to construct a refined training set to improve the classification performance in a variety of applications, such as text analysis, image recognition, social network modeling, etc. Although combining representativeness and informativeness of samples has been proven promising for active sampling, state-of-the-art methods perform well under certain data structures. Then can we find a way to fuse the two active sampling criteria without …

High Impact Bug Report Identification With Imbalanced Learning Strategies, Xinli Yang, David Lo, Xin Xia, Qiao Huang, Jianling Sun Jan 2017

High Impact Bug Report Identification With Imbalanced Learning Strategies, Xinli Yang, David Lo, Xin Xia, Qiao Huang, Jianling Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In practice, some bugs have more impact than others and thus deserve more immediate attention. Due to tight schedule and limited human resources, developers may not have enough time to inspect all bugs. Thus, they often concentrate on bugs that are highly impactful. In the literature, high-impact bugs are used to refer to the bugs which appear at unexpected time or locations and bring more unexpected effects (i.e., surprise bugs), or break pre-existing functionalities and destroy the user experience (i.e., breakage bugs). Unfortunately, identifying high-impact bugs from thousands of bug reports in a bug tracking system is not an easy …

Attribute-Based Storage Supporting Secure Deduplication Of Encrypted Data In Cloud, Hui Cui, Robert H. Deng, Yingjiu Li, Guowei Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Attribute-based encryption (ABE) has been widely used in cloud computing where a data provider outsources his/herencrypted data to a cloud service provider, and can share the data with users possessing specific credentials (or attributes). However, the standard ABE system does not support secure deduplication, which is crucial for eliminating duplicate copies of identical data inorder to save storage space and network bandwidth. In this paper, we present an attribute-based storage system with securededuplication in a hybrid cloud setting, where a private cloud is responsible for duplicate detection and a public cloud manages thestorage. Compared with the prior data deduplication systems, our …

Recently group-oriented applications over unsecure open networks such as Internet or wireless networks have become very popular. Thus, group communication security over unsecure open networks has become a vital concern. Group key establishment (GKE) protocols are used to satisfy the confidentiality requirement of a newly started communication session by the generation or sharing of an ephemeral common key between the group members. In this study, we analyze the computation and communication efficiency of GKE protocols. Besides confidentiality, the security characteristics of identification and integrity control are also required for all steps of the protocol implementations. Thus, the main contribution of …

Robust Adaptive Fuzzy Control Of A Three-Phase Active Power Filter Based On Feedback Linearization, Shixi Hou, Juntao Fei Jan 2017

Robust Adaptive Fuzzy Control Of A Three-Phase Active Power Filter Based On Feedback Linearization, Shixi Hou, Juntao Fei

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a robust adaptive fuzzy control system using feedback linearization is proposed for a three-phase active power filter (APF). The APF system is divided into two separate loops: the current dynamic inner loop and the DC voltage dynamic outer loop. Adaptive fuzzy tracking control using feedback linearization is employed for the current dynamic inner loop to overcome the drawbacks of the conventional method. The proposed controller can ensure proper tracking of the reference current and impose desired dynamic behavior, giving robustness and insensitivity to parameter variations. Adaptive fuzzy proportional-integral control is applied to the DC voltage dynamics outer …

Novel Scheduling Algorithm For Optimizing Real-Time Multimedia Performance In Long Term Evolution-Advanced, Huda Adibah Mohd Ramli, Zairi Ismael Rizman

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Real-time multimedia applications are becoming increasingly popular among mobile cellular users. Given that Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A), which is an emerging mobile cellular standard, needs to support these multimedia applications, packet scheduling is of paramount importance in LTE-A. This paper proposes a packet scheduling algorithm known as novel scheduling for usage in the downlink of LTE-A. It takes channel quality, average throughput, and packet delay into account when determining the priority of each user. Simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm in optimizing real-time multimedia performance for more mobile cellular users.

Sotarm: Size Of Transaction-Based Association Rule Mining Algorithm, Asha Pandian, Jebarajan Thaveethu Jan 2017

Sotarm: Size Of Transaction-Based Association Rule Mining Algorithm, Asha Pandian, Jebarajan Thaveethu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Mining of association rules tries to identify the existence of promising and fruitful relations among the items present in a database. The basic a priori algorithm suffers from multiple database scans, and if the database is large, then the time taken for scanning and generation of candidates is also large. The proposed algorithm attempts to reduce the repeated scanning of the whole database. Using this algorithm, scanning time and also the generation of subitems that are not frequent can be reduced. The former can be done by sorting the transaction records in descending order based on the size of transaction …

Exploiting Kernel-Based Feature Weighting And Instance Clustering To Transfer Knowledge Across Domains, Jafar Tahmoresnezhad, Sattar Hashemi Jan 2017

Exploiting Kernel-Based Feature Weighting And Instance Clustering To Transfer Knowledge Across Domains, Jafar Tahmoresnezhad, Sattar Hashemi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Learning invariant features across domains is of vital importance to unsupervised domain adaptation, where classifiers trained on the training examples (source domain) need to adapt to a different set of test examples (target domain) in which no labeled examples are available. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to find the invariant features in the original space and transfer the knowledge across domains. We extract invariant features of input data by a kernel-based feature weighting approach, which exploits distribution difference and instance clustering to find desired features. The proposed method is called the kernel-based feature weighting (KFW) approach and …

A Hybrid Maco And Bfoa Algorithm For Power Loss Minimization And Total Cost Reduction In Distribution Systems, Muthubalaji Sankaramoorthy, Malathi Veluchamy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a multiobjective optimization methodology to optimally place a STATCOM in electric power distribution networks. The combination of multiobjective ant colony optimization (MACO) and the bacterial foraging optimization algorithm (BFOA) is proposed to minimize the power loss and total cost. The main intention of this analysis is to optimally place the STATCOM at multiple locations such as the transmission side, middle, and load side. Identifying the type and location of the STATCOM is a combinatorial optimization problem in power systems. In order to overcome this problem, the combination of hybrid MACO and BFOA algorithms is applied in this …

An Intelligent Approach In Delay Tolerant Network Routing, Azadeh Omidvar, Karim Mohammadi Jan 2017

An Intelligent Approach In Delay Tolerant Network Routing, Azadeh Omidvar, Karim Mohammadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) are wireless intermittent networks. DTNs have different applications such as wildlife tracking, military, and space searching. Conventional mobile ad hoc network (MANET) routing protocols are not efficient in these networks because of intermittency. DTNs use store-carry-forward (SCF) for data transferring. In SCF, nodes store the messages and carry them until finding appropriate nodes for forwarding. Message replication greatly helps to improve the delivery ratio while increasing overhead. This paper examines the use of intelligent routing to choose nodes that have more probability to reach their destination. This will help to increase the message delivery ratio while …

Implementation Of Svc Based On Grey Theory And Fuzzy Logic To Improve Lvrt Capability Of Wind Distributed Generations, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Akbar Itami Jan 2017

Implementation Of Svc Based On Grey Theory And Fuzzy Logic To Improve Lvrt Capability Of Wind Distributed Generations, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Akbar Itami

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Due to the great absorption of reactive power after voltage drops caused by faults in network, the low-voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of squirrel cage induction generators (SCIGs) in wind farms is a great challenge. If a static VAR compensator (SVC) is installed at the point of common coupling (PCC) of a wind farm with a main network, it can improve the wind generation's LVRT capability with reactive power compensation. In the voltage control loop of a conventional SVC, the voltage actual value of the PCC is compared with the reference voltage value. This paper presents a method for implementation …

A New Efficient Block Matching Data Hiding Method Based On Scanning Order Selection In Medical Images, Turgay Aydoğan, Cüneyt Bayilmiş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Digital technology and the widespread use of the Internet has increased the speeds at which digital data can be obtained and shared in daily life. In parallel to this, there are important concerns regarding the confidentiality of private data during data transmissions and the possibility that data might fall into the hands of third parties. Issues relating to data safety can also affect patients' medical images and other information relating to these images. In this study, we propose a new method based on block matching that can be used to hide the patient information in medical images. In this method, …

Adaptive Control Of Pure-Feedback Systems In The Presence Of Parametric Uncertainties, Mehrnoosh Asadi, Heydar Toossian Shandiz Jan 2017

Adaptive Control Of Pure-Feedback Systems In The Presence Of Parametric Uncertainties, Mehrnoosh Asadi, Heydar Toossian Shandiz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The purpose of this study is to investigate an adaptive control approach for completely nonaffine pure-feedback systems with linear/nonlinear parameterization. In this approach, the parameter separation technique and the idea of the positive function of linearly connected parameters are coupled effectively with the combination of backstepping and time-scale separation. Subsequently, a fast dynamical equation is derived from the original subsystem, where the solution is sought to approximate the corresponding ideal virtual/actual control inputs. Furthermore, the adaptation law of unknown parameters can be derived based on Lyapunov theory in the backstepping technique and there is no need to design a state …

Presently, axial flux permanent magnet machines are becoming popular and are being deployed actively for low speed applications. This paper presents an improved model of a multistage axial flux permanent magnet generator (AFPMG). The multistage AFPMG consists of multiple stator and rotor discs. There are three identical 1-phase stator discs and four in-phase rotor discs in the proposed multistage AFPMG. In this research, 4 case studies were analyzed on the design of the multistage AFPMG. First, a phase shift model (PSM) positions the three 1-phase stator discs to behave as a 3-phase generator. Actually, the PSM computes phases for three …

Transmission Power Control Using State Estimation-Based Received Signal Strength Prediction For Energy Efficiency In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ramakrishnan Sabitha, Krishna Bhuma, Thangavelu Thyagarajan Jan 2017

Transmission Power Control Using State Estimation-Based Received Signal Strength Prediction For Energy Efficiency In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ramakrishnan Sabitha, Krishna Bhuma, Thangavelu Thyagarajan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In battery-operated wireless sensor networks, the quality of service requirements such as throughput and energy efficiency must be stringently maintained while the least amount of energy is consumed. Since a major portion of energy is spent by the transceiver operations, transmission power control (TPC) in the medium access control (MAC) layer can bring about considerable energy efficiency. Since TPC algorithms will have a direct impact on the received signal strength index (RSSI) at the receiver, RSSI is the primary input parameter for any TPC algorithm. The objective of the proposed work is to decide on the exact value of transmission …

A New Approach For Digital Image Watermarking To Predict Optimal Blocks Using Artificial Neural Networks, Raheleh Khorsand Movaghar, Hossein Khaleghi Bizaki Jan 2017

A New Approach For Digital Image Watermarking To Predict Optimal Blocks Using Artificial Neural Networks, Raheleh Khorsand Movaghar, Hossein Khaleghi Bizaki

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we propose a novel nonblind digital image watermarking based on discrete wavelet transform and singular value decomposition. This robust scheme takes advantage of artificial neural networks for selecting suitable image blocks in which the watermark signal can be embedded. Local characteristics of the blocks such as luminance and texture sensitivity are the main criteria that the selections are based on. Generally, selection is based on a prediction of the results with the objective of transparency and watermark resilience. In other words, before embedding the water mark signal, it is estimated which blocks would be the best for …

Mutual Correlation Of Nist Statistical Randomness Tests And Comparison Of Their Sensitivities On Transformed Sequences, Ali̇ Doğanaksoy, Fati̇h Sulak, Muhi̇ddi̇n Uğuz, Okan Şeker, Zi̇ya Akcengi̇z Jan 2017

Mutual Correlation Of Nist Statistical Randomness Tests And Comparison Of Their Sensitivities On Transformed Sequences, Ali̇ Doğanaksoy, Fati̇h Sulak, Muhi̇ddi̇n Uğuz, Okan Şeker, Zi̇ya Akcengi̇z

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Random sequences are widely used in many cryptographic applications and hence their generation is one of the main research areas in cryptography. Statistical randomness tests are introduced to detect the weaknesses or nonrandom characteristics that a sequence under consideration may have. In the literature, there exist various statistical randomness tests and test suites, defined as a collection of tests. An efficient test suite should consist of a number of uncorrelated statistical tests each of which measures randomness from another point of view. `Being uncorrelated' is not a well-defined or well-understood concept in the literature. In this work, we apply Pearson's …

Hadoop Framework Implementation And Performance Analysis On A Cloud, Göksu Zeki̇ye Özen, Mehmet Tekerek, Rayi̇mbek Sultanov

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The Hadoop framework uses the MapReduce programming paradigm to process big data by distributing data across a cluster and aggregating. MapReduce is one of the methods used to process big data hosted on large clusters. In this method, jobs are processed by dividing into small pieces and distributing over nodes. Parameters such as distributing method over nodes, the number of jobs held in a parallel fashion, and the number of nodes in the cluster affect the execution time of jobs. The aim of this paper is to determine how the numbers of nodes, maps, and reduces affect the performance of …

A Combined Approach Based On Fuzzy Ahp And Fuzzy Inference System To Rank Reviewers In Online Communities, Hossein Abbasimehr, Mohammadjafar Tarokh Jan 2017

A Combined Approach Based On Fuzzy Ahp And Fuzzy Inference System To Rank Reviewers In Online Communities, Hossein Abbasimehr, Mohammadjafar Tarokh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Online product review communities allow users to share their ideas and opinions about various products and services. Although online reviews as user-generated content can be considered as an invaluable source of information for both consumers and firms, these reviews tend to be of very different quality. To tackle the problem of low quality reviews, we address reviewer credibility and propose an innovative framework. The framework comprises five critical phases for ranking reviewers in terms of credibility using a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy inference system. To determine the weights of the features, a fuzzy AHP method was applied. …
