Financial Fraud Risk Management And Corporate Governance, Raymond Lutui, Tau'aho 'Ahokovi

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Risk management is important so that risk is assessed, understood and appropriately managed. This is important both for conformance and performance. It is essential that strategic planning and management decisions are made appropriately in the context of the risk appetite of the corporation and its various stakeholders – especially its shareholders. If a company does not have a good understanding of risk, the likelihood of conformance and performance failure is high, this implies good internal and external corporate intelligence. Large global corporations have a significant impact on economies around the world. These entities are subject to intense competition and require …

Assessment Of Security Vulnerabilities In Wearable Devices, Brian Cusack, Bryce Antony, Gerard Ward, Shaunak Mody

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Wearable devices have proliferated in usage and human experience, and they provide convenience for personal information requirements. These devices are both sensory and immersive for the diverse global network that is generally termed the Internet of things (IoT). The immediacy of the two-way communication created in the IoT has made vulnerable human behaviour and raised debate around information ownership and privacy expectations. The legitimacy of ownership of information and its reuse are prevalent problems. In this research, we tested four wearable devices that share 44% of the current market, for security vulnerabilities. We found serious weaknesses that could result in …

This work aims to study the aggregation of dimensional errors in the reengineering processes using 3D scanning and printing without initial design drawings. A 57-tooth spur gear is used as an example to facilitate the discussion. Two approaches are investigated. The first one builds the gear model based upon measurement taken from a caliper, and the second approach uses a 3D scanner to collect geometry data. Dimensional errors in each stage of these two approaches are investigated. Particular attention is paid to the geometry data flow in the reengineering process from data acquisition and editing to model construction. Recommendations are …

Anomaly detection in user access patterns using artificial neural networks is a novel way of combating the ever-present concern of computer network intrusion detection for many entities around the world. Anomaly detection is a technique in network security in which a profile is built around a user's normal daily actions. The data collected for these profiles can be as following: file access attempts; failed login attempts; file creations; file access failures; and countless others. This data is collected and used as training data for a neural network.

There are many types of neural networks, such as multi-layer feed-forward network; recurrent …

Triple Non-Negative Matrix Factorization Technique For Sentiment Analysis And Topic Modeling, Alexander A. Waggoner Jan 2017

Triple Non-Negative Matrix Factorization Technique For Sentiment Analysis And Topic Modeling, Alexander A. Waggoner

CMC Senior Theses

Topic modeling refers to the process of algorithmically sorting documents into categories based on some common relationship between the documents. This common relationship between the documents is considered the “topic” of the documents. Sentiment analysis refers to the process of algorithmically sorting a document into a positive or negative category depending whether this document expresses a positive or negative opinion on its respective topic. In this paper, I consider the open problem of document classification into a topic category, as well as a sentiment category. This has a direct application to the retail industry where companies may want to scour …

An Introduction To The Theory And Applications Of Bayesian Networks, Anant Jaitha Jan 2017

An Introduction To The Theory And Applications Of Bayesian Networks, Anant Jaitha

CMC Senior Theses

Bayesian networks are a means to study data. A Bayesian network gives structure to data by creating a graphical system to model the data. It then develops probability distributions over these variables. It explores variables in the problem space and examines the probability distributions related to those variables. It conducts statistical inference over those probability distributions to draw meaning from them. They are good means to explore a large set of data efficiently to make inferences. There are a number of real world applications that already exist and are being actively researched. This paper discusses the theory and applications of …

A New Frontier: But For Whom? An Analysis Of The Micro-Computer And Women’S Declining Participation In Computer Science, Eliana Keinan Jan 2017

A New Frontier: But For Whom? An Analysis Of The Micro-Computer And Women’S Declining Participation In Computer Science, Eliana Keinan

CMC Senior Theses

Though women’s participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields has greatly increased over the past 60 years, women’s participation in computer science peaked in the 1980s. The paper searches for key motivators for women entering computer science at the peak in order to isolate factors for the subsequent steep decline. A major finding of the paper is that having a computer at home is (weakly) statistically significant as a determinant for female students choosing to pursue computer science. This relationship is insignificant for students in other STEM and non-STEM fields. A final section of the paper examines employment …

Modeling Volatility Of Financial Time Series Using Arc Length, Benjamin H. Hoerlein Jan 2017

Modeling Volatility Of Financial Time Series Using Arc Length, Benjamin H. Hoerlein

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores how arc length can be modeled and used to measure the risk involved with a financial time series. Having arc length as a measure of volatility can help an investor in sorting which stocks are safer/riskier to invest in. A Gamma autoregressive model of order one(GAR(1)) is proposed to model arc length series. Kernel regression based bias correction is studied when model parameters are estimated using method of moment procedure. As an application, a model-based clustering involving thirty different stocks is presented using k-means++ and hierarchical clustering techniques.

Jml Template Generation, Kushal Raghav Poojari Jan 2017

Jml Template Generation, Kushal Raghav Poojari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Java Modeling Language (JML) is a behavioral interface specific language designed to specify Java modules (which are Java classes and interfaces). Specifications are used to describe the intended functionality without considering the way it is implemented. In JML, if a user wants to write specifications for a Java file, he or she must undertake several steps. To help automate the process of creating annotations for method specifications, a tool Jmlspec was created. Jmlspec generated a file that refines the source file and has empty placeholders in which one can write specifications. Although Jmlspec worked with older versions of Java, …

Visual Saliency Detection And Semantic Segmentation, Nasim Souly Jan 2017

Visual Saliency Detection And Semantic Segmentation, Nasim Souly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Visual saliency is the ability to select the most relevant data in the scene and reduce the amount of data that needs to be processed. We propose a novel unsupervised approach to detect visual saliency in videos. For this, we employ a hierarchical segmentation technique to obtain supervoxels of a video, and simultaneously, we build a dictionary from cuboids of the video. Then we create a feature matrix from coefficients of dictionary elements. Next, we decompose this matrix into sparse and redundant parts and obtain salient regions using group lasso. Our experiments provide promising results in terms of predicting eye …

Hindsight: Encouraging Exploration Through Direct Encoding Of Personal Interaction History, Mi Feng, Cheng Deng, Evan M. Peck, Lane Harrison Jan 2017

Hindsight: Encouraging Exploration Through Direct Encoding Of Personal Interaction History, Mi Feng, Cheng Deng, Evan M. Peck, Lane Harrison

Faculty Journal Articles

Physical and digital objects often leave markers of our use. Website links turn purple after we visit them, for example, showing us information we have yet to explore. These “footprints” of interaction offer substantial benefits in information saturated environments - they enable us to easily revisit old information, systematically explore new information, and quickly resume tasks after interruption. While applying these design principles have been successful in HCI contexts, direct encodings of personal interaction history have received scarce attention in data visualization. One reason is that there is little guidance for integrating history into visualizations where many visual channels are …

The personalized semantic search method makes the search system avoids the one-size-fits-all …

Availability Of Datasets For Digital Forensics–And What Is Missing, Cinthya Grajeda, Frank Breitinger, Ibrahim Baggili Jan 2017

Availability Of Datasets For Digital Forensics–And What Is Missing, Cinthya Grajeda, Frank Breitinger, Ibrahim Baggili

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper targets two main goals. First, we want to provide an overview of available datasets that can be used by researchers and where to find them. Second, we want to stress the importance of sharing datasets to allow researchers to replicate results and improve the state of the art. To answer the first goal, we analyzed 715 peer-reviewed research articles from 2010 to 2015 with focus and relevance to digital forensics to see what datasets are available and focused on three major aspects: (1) the origin of the dataset (e.g., real world vs. synthetic), (2) if datasets were released …

Exploring Myths In Digital Forensics: Separating Science From Ritual, Gary C. Kessler, Gregory H. Carlton Jan 2017

Exploring Myths In Digital Forensics: Separating Science From Ritual, Gary C. Kessler, Gregory H. Carlton

Publications

Digital forensic methodology deviates significantly relative to the methods of other forensic sciences for numerous practical reasons, and it has been largely influenced by factors derived from the inception and evolution of this relatively new and rapidly changing field. Digital forensics methodology was developed more by practitioners in its early days rather than by computer scientists. This led to accepted best practices in the field that may not represent the best or, at least, tested, science. This paper explores some of these differences in the practice and evolution between digital and other forensic sciences, and recommends scientific approaches to apply …

A Knowledge-Based Topic Modeling Approach For Automatic Topic Labeling, Mehdi Allahyari, Seyedamin Pouriyeh, Krys Kochut, Hamid Reza Arabnia Jan 2017

A Knowledge-Based Topic Modeling Approach For Automatic Topic Labeling, Mehdi Allahyari, Seyedamin Pouriyeh, Krys Kochut, Hamid Reza Arabnia

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Probabilistic topic models, which aim to discover latent topics in text corpora define each document as a multinomial distributions over topics and each topic as a multinomial distributions over words. Although, humans can infer a proper label for each topic by looking at top representative words of the topic but, it is not applicable for machines. Automatic Topic Labeling techniques try to address the problem. The ultimate goal of topic labeling techniques are to assign interpretable labels for the learned topics. In this paper, we are taking concepts of ontology into consideration instead of words alone to improve the quality …

Automated Refinement Of Hierarchical Object Graphs, Mohammad Ebrahim Khalaj Jan 2017

Automated Refinement Of Hierarchical Object Graphs, Mohammad Ebrahim Khalaj

Wayne State University Dissertations

Object graphs help explain the runtime structure of a system. To make object graphs convey design intent, one insight is to use

abstraction by hierarchy, i.e., to show objects that are implementation details as children of architecturally-relevant objects from the application domain. But additional information is needed to express this object hierarchy, using ownership type qualifiers in the code. Adding qualifiers after the fact involves manual overhead, and requires developers to switch between adding qualifiers in the code and looking at abstract object graphs to understand the object structures that the qualifiers describe. We propose an approach where developers express …

Horizontal And Vertical Integration Of Bio-Molecular Data, Tin Chi Nguyen Jan 2017

Horizontal And Vertical Integration Of Bio-Molecular Data, Tin Chi Nguyen

Wayne State University Dissertations

Modern biomedical research lies at the crossroads of data gathering, interpretation, and hypothesis testing. Due to noise, study bias, or too small changes in biological signals between disease and healthy, individual studies often fail to identify the true phenomenon. Data integration is the key to obtaining the power needed to pinpoint the biological mechanisms of disease states. Given this, we tried to make important contributions in both horizontal and vertical integration of high-throughput data; the former is meta-analysis of independent studies, while the latter is the integration of multi-omics data.

For horizontal meta-analysis, we developed two frameworks: DANUBE and the …
