Identifying Parkinson’S Patients: A Functional Gradient Boosting Approach, D. S. Dhami, Ameet Soni, D. Page, S. Natarajan

Computer Science Faculty Works

Parkinson’s, a progressive neural disorder, is difficult to identify due to the hidden nature of the symptoms associated. We present a machine learning approach that uses a definite set of features obtained from the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) study as input and classifies them into one of two classes: PD (Parkinson’s disease) and HC (Healthy Control). As far as we know this is the first work in applying machine learning algorithms for classifying patients with Parkinson’s disease with the involvement of domain expert during the feature selection process. We evaluate our approach on 1194 patients acquired from Parkinson’s Progression …

Conceptual Primitive Decomposition For Knowledge Sharing Via Natural Language, Jamie C. Macbeth Jan 2017

Conceptual Primitive Decomposition For Knowledge Sharing Via Natural Language, Jamie C. Macbeth

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Natural language is an ideal mode of interaction and knowledge sharing between intelligent computer systems and their human users. But a major problem that natural language interaction poses is linguistic variation, or the "paraphrase problem": there are a variety of ways of referring to the same idea. This is a special problem for intelligent systems in domains such as information retrieval, where a query presented in natural language is matched against an ontology or knowledge base, particularly when its representation uses a vocabulary based in natural language. This paper proposes solutions to these problems in primitive decomposition methods that represent …

Image Schemas And Conceptual Dependency Primitives: A Comparison, Jamie C. Macbeth, Dagmar Gromann, Maria M. Hedblom Jan 2017

Image Schemas And Conceptual Dependency Primitives: A Comparison, Jamie C. Macbeth, Dagmar Gromann, Maria M. Hedblom

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

A major challenge in natural language understanding research in artificial intelligence (AI) has been and still is the grounding of symbols in a representation that allows for rich semantic interpretation, inference, and deduction. Across cognitive linguistics and other disciplines, a number of principled methods for meaning representation of natural language have been proposed that aim to emulate capacities of human cognition. However, little cross-fertilization among those methods has taken place. A joint effort of human-level meaning representation from AI research and from cognitive linguistics holds the potential of contributing new insights to this profound challenge. To this end, this paper …

Angle-Monotone Paths In Non-Obtuse Triangulations, Anna Lubiw, Joseph O'Rourke Jan 2017

Angle-Monotone Paths In Non-Obtuse Triangulations, Anna Lubiw, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We reprove a result of Dehkordi, Frati, and Gudmundsson: every two vertices in a non-obtuse triangulation of a point set are connected by an angle-monotone path-an xy-monotone path in an appropriately rotated coordinate system. We show that this result cannot be extended to angle-monotone spanning trees, but can be extended to boundary-rooted spanning forests. The latter leads to a conjectural edge-unfolding of sufficiently shallow polyhedral convex caps.

Temporal Alignment Using The Incremental Unit Framework, Casey Kennington, Ting Han, David Schlangen Jan 2017

Temporal Alignment Using The Incremental Unit Framework, Casey Kennington, Ting Han, David Schlangen

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We propose a method for temporal alignments--a precondition of meaningful fusions--of multimodal systems, using the incremental unit dialogue system framework, which gives the system flexibility in how it handles alignment: either by delaying a modality for a specified amount of time, or by revoking (i.e., backtracking) processed information so multiple information sources can be processed jointly. We evaluate our approach in an offline experiment with multimodal data and find that using the incremental framework is flexible and shows promise as a solution to the problem of temporal alignment in multimodal systems.

Analysis On The Security And Use Of Password Managers, Carlos Luevanos, John Elizarraras, Khai Hirschi, Jyh-Haw Yeh

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cybersecurity has become one of the largest growing fields in computer science and the technology industry. Faulty security has cost the global economy immense losses. Oftentimes, the pitfall in such financial loss is due to the security of passwords. Companies and regular people alike do not do enough to enforce strict password guidelines like the NIST (National Institute of Standard Technology) recommends. When big security breaches happen, thousands to millions of passwords can be exposed and stored into files, meaning people are susceptible to dictionary and rainbow table attacks. Those are only two examples of attacks that are used to …

A Novel Approach For Classifying Gene Expression Data Using Topic Modeling, Soon Jye Kho, Himi Yalamanchili, Michael L. Raymer, Amit Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Understanding the role of differential gene expression in cancer etiology and cellular process is a complex problem that continues to pose a challenge due to sheer number of genes and inter-related biological processes involved. In this paper, we employ an unsupervised topic model, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to mitigate overfitting of high-dimensionality gene expression data and to facilitate understanding of the associated pathways. LDA has been recently applied for clustering and exploring genomic data but not for classification and prediction. Here, we proposed to use LDA inclustering as well as in classification of cancer and healthy tissues using lung cancer …

Supporting Education For Students With Children Through Mobile Technology, Brenda C. Varner Jan 2017

Supporting Education For Students With Children Through Mobile Technology, Brenda C. Varner

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The original goal of this project was to build a peer e-mentoring program for parents and measure the effect of the program on persistence. In spite of strong mentor participation, two terms of focused recruiting did not attract mentees. This sparked the question of why those who had successfully navigated the higher education system thought a peer e-mentoring program was needed but those in the process did not. A focused ethnography was designed to try to understand why students with children were resistant to peer e-mentoring. Students with children used technology to integrate the various roles of life. They used …

Measuring Cybersecurity Competency: An Exploratory Investigation Of The Cybersecurity Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Necessary For Organizational Network Access Privileges, Richard Nilsen

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Organizational information system users (OISU) that are victimized by cyber threats are contributing to major financial and information losses for individuals, businesses, and governments. Moreover, it has been argued that cybersecurity competency is critical for advancing economic prosperity and maintaining national security. The fact remains that technical cybersecurity controls may be rendered useless due to a lack of cybersecurity competency of OISUs. All OISUs, from accountants to cybersecurity forensics experts, can place organizational assets at risk. However, that risk is increased when OISUs do not have the cybersecurity competency necessary for operating an information system (IS). The main goal of …

Oasis - Identifying The Core Attributes For Rdbms Alternatives, Benjamin P. Mcpherson Jan 2017

Oasis - Identifying The Core Attributes For Rdbms Alternatives, Benjamin P. Mcpherson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Since their introduction in the 1970s, relational database management systems have served as the dominate data storage technology. However, the demands of big data and Web 2.0 necessitated a change in the market, sparking the beginning of the NoSQL movement in the late 2000s. NoSQL databases exchanged the relational model and the guaranteed consistency of ACID transactions for improved performance and massive scalability [1]. While the benefits NoSQL provided proved useful, the lack of sufficient SQL functionality presented a major hurdle for organizations which require it to properly operate. It was clear that new RDBMS solutions which did not compromise …

Robust Scale-Invariant Normalization And Similarity Measurement For Time Series Data, Ariyawat Chonbodeechalermroong Jan 2017

Robust Scale-Invariant Normalization And Similarity Measurement For Time Series Data, Ariyawat Chonbodeechalermroong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Classification is one of the most prevalent tasks in time series mining. Dynamic Time Warping and Longest Common Subsequence are well-known and widely used algorithms to measure similarity between two time series sequences using non-linear alignment. However, these algorithms work best when the time series pair has similar amplitude scaling. Unfortunately, sensor data and most real-world time series data usually contain noise, missing values, outlier, and variability or scaling in both axes, which is not suitable for the widely used Z-normalization. This research introduces the Local Feature Normalization (LFN) and its Local Scaling Feature (LSF), which can be used to …

Building A Dataset For Image Steganography, Chris Woolley, Ahmed Ibrahim, Peter Hannay Jan 2017

Building A Dataset For Image Steganography, Chris Woolley, Ahmed Ibrahim, Peter Hannay

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Image steganography and steganalysis techniques discussed in the literature rely on using a dataset(s)created based on cover images obtained from the public domain, through the acquisition of images from Internet sources, or manually. This issue often leads to challenges in validating, benchmarking, and reproducing reported techniques in a consistent manner. It is our view that the steganography/steganalysis research community would benefit from the availability of common datasets, thus promoting transparency and academic integrity. In this research, we have considered four aspects: image acquisition, pre-processing, steganographic techniques, and embedding rate in building a dataset for image steganography.

Iseek, A Tool For High Speed, Concurrent, Distributed Forensic Data Acquisition, Richard Adams, Graham Mann, Valerie Hobbs Jan 2017

Iseek, A Tool For High Speed, Concurrent, Distributed Forensic Data Acquisition, Richard Adams, Graham Mann, Valerie Hobbs

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Electronic discovery (also written as e-discovery or eDiscovery) and digital forensics are processes in which electronic data is sought, located, secured, and processed with the expectation that it may be used as evidence in legal proceedings. Electronic evidence plays a fundamental role in many aspects of litigation (Stanfield, 2009). However, both eDiscovery and digital forensic approaches that rely on the creation of an index as part of their processing are struggling to cope with the huge increases in hard disk storage capacity. This paper introduces a novel technology that meets the existing and future data volume challenges faced by practitioners …

Our successful multimedia event detection system at TREC-VID 2015 showed its strength on handling complex concepts in a query. The system was based on a large number of pre-trained concept detectors for textual-to-visual relation. In this paper, we enhance the system by enabling human-in-the-loop. In order to facilitate a user to quickly find an information need, we incorporate concept screening, video reranking by highlighted concepts, relevance feedback and color sketch to refine a coarse retrieval result. The aim is to eventually come up with a system suitable for both Ad-hoc Video Search and Known-Item Search. In addition, as the increasing …

A Two-Sided Collaborative Transparent Display Supporting Workspace Awareness, Jiannan Li, Saul Greenberg, Ehud Sharlin Jan 2017

A Two-Sided Collaborative Transparent Display Supporting Workspace Awareness, Jiannan Li, Saul Greenberg, Ehud Sharlin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Transparent displays naturally support workspace awareness during face-to-face interactions. Viewers see another person’s actions through the display: gestures, gaze, body movements, and what one is manipulating on the display. Yet we can design even better collaborative transparent displays. First, collaborators on either side should be able to directly interact with workspace objects. Second, and more controversially, both sides should be capable of presenting different content. This affords: reversal of images/text in place (so that people on both sides see objects correctly); personal and private territories aligned atop each other; and GUI objects that provide different visuals for feedthrough vs. feedback. …

Intelligent Profiling Of Blood Donors In Ireland, Joanna Kossakowska Jan 2017

Intelligent Profiling Of Blood Donors In Ireland, Joanna Kossakowska

Theses

The demand for blood products in Ireland is constantly rising due to population growth and population ageing. It is believed that within the next decade these two factors will present challenges to blood donor recruitment and the availability of blood supplies. Improving the retention of blood donors will have a positive impact on the availability of blood products. Identification of suitable donors with the potential for long-term donating can potentially enhance the predictability of blood supply levels.

This research proposes that the patterns of blood donation behaviours of donors can be isolated from blood donor databases held by blood collecting …

Enhanced Breast Cancer Classification With Automatic Thresholding Using Support Vector Machine And Harris Corner Detection, Mohammad Taheri Jan 2017

Enhanced Breast Cancer Classification With Automatic Thresholding Using Support Vector Machine And Harris Corner Detection, Mohammad Taheri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Image classification and extracting the characteristics of a tumor are the powerful tools in medical science. In case of breast cancer medical treatment, the breast cancer classification methods can be used to classify input images as benign and malignant classes for better diagnoses and earlier detection with breast tumors. However, classification process can be challenging because of the existence of noise in the images, and complicated structures of the image. Manual classification of the images is timeconsuming, and need to be done only by medical experts. Hence using an automated medical image classification tool is useful and necessary. In addition, …

Detecting if a population is in decline is an important objective for biologists and conservationists who are monitoring threatened populations. As genetic methods improve effective population size (Ne) and effective number of breeders (Nb) continue to gain popularity as a way to monitor species. Using simulated populations and linkage disequilibrium, we explored detecting population decline through Nb in age structured populations. Through comparisons of sensitivity (1 – false negatives) and specificity (1- false positives) over 1000 replicates, we explored how factors such as starting Nb, number of SNPs, number of individuals …

Mirage: A Novel Multiple Protein Sequence Alignment Tool, Alex Nord Jan 2017

Mirage: A Novel Multiple Protein Sequence Alignment Tool, Alex Nord

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A fundamental problem in computational biology is the organization of many related sequences into a multiple sequence alignment (MSA) [2]. MSAs have a range of research applications, such as inferring phylogeny [22] and identifying regions of conserved sequence that indicate functional similarity [18]. In the case of protein isoforms, MSAs are valuable tools for transitively annotating post-translational modifications (PTMs) by enabling information transfer between known PTM sites and the sites that they align to [11].

For protein MSA tools, one challenging biological phenomenon is alternative splicing, wherein identical genomic sequence will differentially select from a subset of available coding regions …
