Designing Light Filters To Detect Skin Using A Low-Powered Sensor, Muhammad Uzair Tariq Jan 2017

Designing Light Filters To Detect Skin Using A Low-Powered Sensor, Muhammad Uzair Tariq

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Detection of nudity in photos and videos, especially prior to uploading to the internet, is vital to solving many problems related to adolescent sexting, the distribution of child pornography, and cyber-bullying. The problem with using nudity detection algorithms as a means to combat these problems is that: 1) it implies that a digitized nude photo of a minor already exists (i.e., child pornography), and 2) there are real ethical and legal concerns around the distribution and processing of child pornography. Once a camera captures an image, that image is no longer secure. Therefore, we need to develop new privacy-preserving solutions …

Adversarial Attacks On Vision Algorithms Using Deep Learning Features, Andy Michel Jan 2017

Adversarial Attacks On Vision Algorithms Using Deep Learning Features, Andy Michel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Computer vision algorithms, such as those implementing object detection, are known to be susceptible to adversarial attacks. Small barely perceptible perturbations to the input can cause vision algorithms to incorrectly classify inputs that they would have otherwise classified correctly. A number of approaches have been recently investigated to generate such adversarial examples for deep neural networks. Many of these approaches either require grey-box access to the deep neural net being attacked or rely on adversarial transfer and grey-box access to a surrogate neural network. In this thesis, we present an approach to the synthesis of adversarial examples for computer vision …

Discovery And Characterization Of Small Molecule Rac1 Inhibitors, Jamie L. Arnst, Ashley L. Hein, Margaret A. Taylor, Nick Y. Palermo, Jacob I. Contreras, Yogesh A. Sonawane, Andrw O. Wahl, Michel M. Ouellette, Amarnath Natarajan, Ying Yan

Holland Computing Center: Faculty Publications

Aberrant activation of Rho GTPase Rac1 has been observed in various tumor types, including pancreatic cancer. Rac1 activates multiple signaling pathways that lead to uncontrolled proliferation, invasion and metastasis. Thus, inhibition of Rac1 activity is a viable therapeutic strategy for proliferative disorders such as cancer. Here we identified small molecule inhibitors that target the nucleotide-binding site of Rac1 through in silico screening. Follow up in vitro studies demonstrated that two compounds blocked active Rac1 from binding to its effector PAK1. Fluorescence polarization studies indicate that these compounds target the nucleotide-binding site of Rac1. In cells, both compounds blocked Rac1 binding …

Resource Allocation And Pricing In Secondary Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks, Enas Khairullah Jan 2017

Resource Allocation And Pricing In Secondary Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks, Enas Khairullah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The paradigm shift from static spectrum allocation to a dynamic one has opened many challenges that need to be addressed for the true vision of Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) to materialize. This dissertation proposes novel solutions that include: spectrum allocation, routing, and scheduling in DSA networks. First, we propose an auction-based spectrum allocation scheme in a multi-channel environment where secondary users (SUs) bid to buy channels from primary users (PUs) based on the signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR). The channels are allocated such that i) the SUs get their preferred channels, ii) channels are re-used, and iii) there …

A Workload-Centered Perspective On Reduced Crew Operations In Commercial Aviation, Daniela Schmid Jan 2017

A Workload-Centered Perspective On Reduced Crew Operations In Commercial Aviation, Daniela Schmid

H-Workload 2017: Models and Applications (Works in Progress)

Mental workload of a pilot, in short workload, depends on various characteristics of different accumulated tasks on the flight deck. Exogenous task demands and endogenous supply of attentional or information processing resources determine workload [1]. Performance is expect to drop if the demand exceeds the available resources of the pilot. Expertise and experience modulate the endogenous sup- ply of resources like perceiving, updating memory, planing, making a decision, and executing and processing a response. Subsequently, workload manifests in performance variables, subjective experience, and physiological parameters [2]. This is how we can summarize workload very brie y to introduce a model …

A Systems Approach To Predicting And Measuring Workload In Rail Traffic Management Systems, Joanna Evans Jan 2017

A Systems Approach To Predicting And Measuring Workload In Rail Traffic Management Systems, Joanna Evans

H-Workload 2017: Models and Applications (Works in Progress)

The introduction of systems such as Traffic Management (TM) will result in a number of changes in how the railway is managed for operations and maintenance staff such as, an increase in collaborative working styles and shared responsibilities. In order to react to these changing operational demands and user needs, TM workstation designs need to have greater flexibility and be configurable to support the information requirements for each specific role as well as support each role during different scenarios. Although this flexibility in system design has the potential to enhance performance, it increases the complexity of measuring operator workload. The …

Forcing Optimality And Brandt's Principle, Domenico Napoletani, Marco Panza, Daniele C. Struppa Jan 2017

Forcing Optimality And Brandt's Principle, Domenico Napoletani, Marco Panza, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

We argue that many optimization methods can be viewed as representatives of “forcing”, a methodological approach that attempts to bridge the gap between data and mathematics on the basis of an a priori trust in the power of a mathematical technique, even when detailed, credible models of a phenomenon are lacking or do not justify the use of this technique. In particular, we show that forcing is implied in particle swarms optimization methods, and in modeling image processing problems through optimization. From these considerations, we extrapolate a principle for general data analysis methods, what we call ‘Brandt’s principle’, namely the …

An Efficient Global Technique For Solving The Network Constrained Static And Dynamic Economic Dispatch Problem, Aamir Nawaz, Nasir Saleem, Ehtasham Mustafa, Umair Ali Khan Jan 2017

An Efficient Global Technique For Solving The Network Constrained Static And Dynamic Economic Dispatch Problem, Aamir Nawaz, Nasir Saleem, Ehtasham Mustafa, Umair Ali Khan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new approach for solving the economic load dispatch (ELD) problem with generator constraints and transmission losses. The constrained globalized Nelder-Mead algorithm is a newly proposed algorithm for solving economic dispatch problems with and without valve-point effects. Convex and nonconvex cost functions with equality and inequality constraints are difficult to optimize. To circumvent these problems, a robust global technique is desirable. In this paper, the constrained globalized Nelder--Mead algorithm is proposed to optimize the ELD problem globally using variance variable probability. To validate the proficiency of the proposed approach, statistical studies have been accomplished for different test …

Comparing Of Phase Shifting Method And One-Dimensional Continuous Wavelet Transform Method For Reconstruction Using Phase-Only Information, Gülhan Ustabaş Kaya, Zehra Saraç Jan 2017

Comparing Of Phase Shifting Method And One-Dimensional Continuous Wavelet Transform Method For Reconstruction Using Phase-Only Information, Gülhan Ustabaş Kaya, Zehra Saraç

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The one-dimensional continuous wavelet transform method has some advantages in hologram reconstruction, when used in the only phase, compared with the phase shifting method. This paper aims to discuss these advantages. One advantage is related to image quality. Another advantage is less power spent and saving time, because the one-dimensional continuous wavelet transform method uses only one hologram and the phase shifting method uses four holograms for recording and reconstruction processes. One final advantage is that the one-dimensional continuous wavelet transform method can also be used in real-time applications. Within the context of the ongoing optimization studies, this study will …

A Marching Algorithm For Isosurface Extraction From Face-Centered Cubic Lattices, Yusuf Sahi̇lli̇oğlu Jan 2017

A Marching Algorithm For Isosurface Extraction From Face-Centered Cubic Lattices, Yusuf Sahi̇lli̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This work provides a novel method that extracts isosurfaces from face-centered cubic (FCC) lattices. It has been theoretically shown that sampling volumetric data on an FCC lattice tiled with rhombic dodecahedra is more efficient than sampling them on a Cartesian lattice tiled with cubes, in that the FCC lattice can represent the same data set as a Cartesian lattice with the same accuracy, yet with approximately 23% fewer samples. This fact, coupled with the good properties of rhombic dodecahedra, encouraged us to develop this related isosurface extraction technique. Thanks to the sparser sampling required by the FCC lattices, the de …

Robust Seed Detection For Coronary Arteries Segmentation Using Thresholded Frangi Response, Sammer Zai, Muhammad Ahsan Ansari, Soon-Young Song, Young Shik Moon Jan 2017

Robust Seed Detection For Coronary Arteries Segmentation Using Thresholded Frangi Response, Sammer Zai, Muhammad Ahsan Ansari, Soon-Young Song, Young Shik Moon

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Automatic detection of initial seed points has become an essential step towards delineating coronary arteries in coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) images due to image inhomogeneity and other factors. Most coronary segmentation algorithms require user interaction for seed point selection, which may lead to erroneous segmentation. In this study, we present an improved technique of seed detection for coronary segmentation using a thresholded Frangi response. Before computing region of interest (ROI), the proposed method first computes the Frangi response of the complete CCTA volume, followed by thresholding with respect to quantile and median values, and then the ROI selection procedure …

A Novel Hybrid Approach Based On A Chaotic Cloud Gravitational Search Algorithm To Complicated Image Template Matching, Weijia Cui, Yuzhu He Jan 2017

A Novel Hybrid Approach Based On A Chaotic Cloud Gravitational Search Algorithm To Complicated Image Template Matching, Weijia Cui, Yuzhu He

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Template matching is the process of accurately extracting the interesting regions in a source image according to reference templates. In this paper, the gravitational search algorithm (GSA) is employed as a novel search strategy for template matching. However, the basic GSA is easily trapped in a local optimum and has a poor exploitation ability. In this paper, to enhance the optimization performance of GSA, a novel cross-search strategy based on chaotic global search (CGS) and cloud local search (CLS) is incorporated into GSA. The new variant is named chaotic cloud GSA (CCGSA). CGS makes full use of the ergodicity of …

A Novel Approach To Solve Transient Stability Constrained Optimal Power Flow Problems, Huy Nguyen-Duc, Linh Tran-Hoai, Dieu Vo Ngoc Jan 2017

A Novel Approach To Solve Transient Stability Constrained Optimal Power Flow Problems, Huy Nguyen-Duc, Linh Tran-Hoai, Dieu Vo Ngoc

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes an approach to solve the transient stability constraint optimal power flow (TSC-OPF) problem. The transient stability constraints are expressed as the critical clearing time (CCT) of different contingencies, and are approximated using artificial neural networks (ANNs). The ANNs provide a nonlinear, differentiable mapping between the load flow variables and the CCT. As a result, the TSC-OPF with multiple transient stability constraints can be solved very efficiently with little additional computational burden. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated with the IEEE 39 bus and the IEEE 300 bus systems.

Low-Power Voltage To A Frequency-Based Smart Temperature Sensor With +0.8/-0.75 $^{\Circ}$C Accuracy For -55 $^{\Circ}$C To 125 $^{\Circ}$C, Mudasir Bashir, Sreehari Rao Patri, Krishna Prasad Jan 2017

Low-Power Voltage To A Frequency-Based Smart Temperature Sensor With +0.8/-0.75 $^{\Circ}$C Accuracy For -55 $^{\Circ}$C To 125 $^{\Circ}$C, Mudasir Bashir, Sreehari Rao Patri, Krishna Prasad

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The high power densities in system-on-chips demand accurate, low power, and compact smart temperatures for thermal monitoring. In this paper, a low-power CMOS-based smart temperature sensor, operating in the subthreshold region, for military applications (-55 $^{\circ}$C to 125 $^{\circ}$C) is presented. The sensor exploits the thermal dependency of the threshold voltage of MOS transistors to generate a voltage proportional to absolute temperature ($V_{PTAT})$. A frequency locked loop technique is employed to generate frequency from $V_{PTAT}$. The frequency variation due to temperature is measured by counting the rising edge with an asynchronous 12-bit counter. The large die area and requirement of …

Research@SMU: Connecting the Dots

The word “Management” in the name of our university was carefully and deliberately chosen to address the needs of institutions and decisionmakers across all segments of society: business enterprises and the private sector, government and the public sector, and civil society and the people sector. Unless you are already familiar with the breadth and depth of research output from Singapore Management University (SMU), you would naturally assume that we were a “management” university that was focusing exclusively on business – in essence, a large business school. The reality is quite different.

Through this book, you will gain a more complete …
