Vulnerabilities, Attacks, And Countermeasures In Balise-Based Train Control Systems, Yongdong Wu, Jian Weng, Zhe Tang, Xin Li, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In modern rail transport systems, balises are widely used to exchange track-train information via air-gap interface. In this paper, we first present the vulnerabilities on the standard balise air-gap interface, and then conduct vulnerability simulations using the system parameters that were specified in the European Train Control System. The simulation results show that the vulnerabilities can be exploited to launch effective and practical attacks, which could lead to catastrophic consequences, such as train derailment or collision. To mitigate the vulnerabilities and attacks, we propose to implement a challenge-response authentication process in the air-gap interface in the existing transport infrastructure.

Retaining players over an extended period of time is a long-standing challenge in game industry. Significant effort has been paid to understanding what motivates players enjoy games. While individuals may have varying reasons to play or abandon a game at different stages within the game, previous studies have looked at the retention problem from a snapshot view. This study, by analyzing in-game logs of 51,104 distinct individuals in an online multiplayer game, uniquely offers a multifaceted view of the retention problem over the players' virtual life phases. We find that key indicators of longevity change with the game level. Achievement …

Design Concept For A Failover Mechanism In Distributed Sdn Controllers, Nathan Kong
Design Concept For A Failover Mechanism In Distributed Sdn Controllers, Nathan Kong
Master's Projects
Software defined networking allows the separation of the control plane and data plane in networking. It provides scalability, programmability, and centralized control. It will use these traits to reach ubiquitous connectivity. Like all concepts software defined networking does not offer these advantages without a cost. By utilizing a centralized controller, a single point of failure is created. To address this issue, this paper proposes a distributed controller failover. This failover will provide a mechanism for recovery when controllers are not located in the same location. This failover mechanism is based on number of hops from orphan nodes to the controller …

This paper proposes a new approach for generating pseudo random multi-valued (including binary-valued) sequences. The approach uses a primitive polynomial over an odd characteristic prime field $\f{p}$, where p is an odd prime number. Then, for the maximum length sequence of vectors generated by the primitive polynomial, the trace function is used for mapping these vectors to scalars as elements in the prime field. Power residue symbol (Legendre symbol in binary case) is applied to translate the scalars to k-value scalars, where k is a prime factor of p-1. Finally, a pseudo random k-value sequence is obtained. Some important properties …

Pythagorean Approximations For Lego: Merging Educational Robot Construction With Programming And Data Analysis, Ronald I. Greenberg
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Abstract. This paper can be used in two ways. It can provide reference information for incorporating diagonal elements (for bracing or gear meshing) in educational robots built from standard LEGO kits. Alternatively, it can be used as the basis for an assignment for high school or college students to recreate this information; in the process, students will exercise skills in both computer programming and data analysis. Using the paper in the second way can be an excellent integrative experience to add to an existing course; for example, the Exploring Computer Science high school curriculum concludes with the units “Introduction to …

A Secure And Efficient Id-Based Aggregate Signature Scheme For Wireless Sensor Networks, Limin Shen, Jianfeng Ma, Ximeng Liu, Fushan Wei, Meixia Miao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Affording secure and efficient big data aggregation methods is very attractive in the field of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) research. In real settings, the WSNs have been broadly applied, such as target tracking and environment remote monitoring. However, data can be easily compromised by a vast of attacks, such as data interception and data tampering, etc. In this paper, we mainly focus on data integrity protection, give an identity-based aggregate signature (IBAS) scheme with a designated verifier for WSNs. According to the advantage of aggregate signatures, our scheme not only can keep data integrity, but also can reduce bandwidth and …

Cloud storage system provides facilitative file storage and sharing services for distributed clients. To address integrity, controllable outsourcing, and origin auditing concerns on outsourced files, we propose an identity-based data outsourcing (IBDO) scheme equipped with desirable features advantageous over existing proposals in securing outsourced data. First, our IBDO scheme allows a user to authorize dedicated proxies to upload data to the cloud storage server on her behalf, e.g., a company may authorize some employees to upload files to the company's cloud account in a controlled way. The proxies are identified and authorized with their recognizable identities, which eliminates complicated certificate …

Due to numerous benefits, sensor-rich smartwatchesand wrist-worn wearable devices are quickly gaining popularity. The popularity of these devices also raises privacy concerns. Inthis paper we explore one such privacy concern: the possibility ofextracting the location of a user’s touch-event on a smartphone, using the inertial sensor data of a smartwatch worn by the useron the same arm. This is a major concern not only because itmight be possible for an attacker to extract private and sensitiveinformation from the inputs provided but also because the attackmode utilises a device (smartwatch) that is distinct from thedevice being attacked (smartphone). Through a user study wefind …
A Compare-Aggregate Model For Matching Text Sequences, Shuohang Wang, Jing Jiang
A Compare-Aggregate Model For Matching Text Sequences, Shuohang Wang, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many NLP tasks including machine comprehension, answer selection and text entailment require the comparison between sequences. Matching the important units between sequences is a key to solve these problems. In this paper, we present a general "compare-aggregate" framework that performs word-level matching followed by aggregation using Convolutional Neural Networks. We particularly focus on the different comparison functions we can use to match two vectors. We use four different datasets to evaluate the model. We find that some simple comparison functions based on element-wise operations can work better than standard neural network and neural tensor network.

Context: State-of-the-art works on automated detection of Android malware have leveraged app descriptions to spot anomalies w.r.t the functionality implemented, or have used data flow information as a feature to discriminate malicious from benign apps. Although these works have yielded promising performance,we hypothesize that these performances can be improved by a better understanding of malicious behavior. Objective: To characterize malicious apps, we take into account both information on app descriptions, which are indicative of apps’ topics, and information on sensitive data flow, which can be relevant todiscriminate malware from benign apps. Method: In this paper, we propose a topic-specific approach to …

As a special type of fault injection attacks, Related-Key Attacks (RKAs) allow an adversary to manipulate a cryptographic key and subsequently observe the outcomes of the cryptographic scheme under these modified keys. In the real life, related-key attacks are already practical enough to be implemented on cryptographic devices. To avoid cryptographic devices suffering from related-key attacks, it is necessary to design a cryptographic scheme that resists against such attacks. This paper proposes an efficient RKA-secure Key Encapsulation Mechanism (KEM), in which the adversary can modify the secret key sk to any value f(sk), as long as, f is a polynomial …
Collective Entity Linking In Tweets Over Space And Time, Wen Haw Chong, Ee-Peng Lim, William Cohen
Collective Entity Linking In Tweets Over Space And Time, Wen Haw Chong, Ee-Peng Lim, William Cohen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose collective entity linking over tweets that are close in space and time. This exploits the fact that events or geographical points of interest often result in related entities being mentioned in spatio-temporal proximity. Our approach directly applies to geocoded tweets. Where geocoded tweets are overly sparse among all tweets, we use a relaxed version of spatial proximity which utilizes both geocoded and non-geocoded tweets linked by common mentions. Entity linking is affected by noisy mentions extracted and incomplete knowledge bases. Moreover, to perform evaluation on the entity linking results, much manual annotation of mentions is often required. To …

Online reviews are important decision aids to consumers. Other than helping users to evaluate individual products, reviews also support comparison shopping by comparing two (or more) products based on a specific aspect. However, making a comparison across two different reviews, written by different authors, is not always equitable due to the different standards and preferences of authors. Therefore, we focus on comparative sentences, whereby two products are compared directly by a review author within a sentence. We study the problem of comparative relation mining. Given a set of comparative sentences, each relating a pair of entities, our objective is three-fold: …

The world economy is undergoing dramatic changes, largely driven by the new availability of fine-grained information. Innovative ways of using data—large and small—have also prompted a rethinking of the boundaries for the combination and use of knowledge. The strategic design of information flows in the economy has the upside of higher economic rents and competitive advantage, as well as the downsides of wealth inequality and abuse of power. This has brought a wide range of regulatory challenges. To understand the nature of these sweeping changes, it is important to examine the new ways information is used, and how information flows …

During software maintenance and evolution, one of the important tasks faced by developers is to understand a system quickly and accurately. With the increasing size and complexity of an evolving system, program comprehension becomes an increasingly difficult activity. Given a target system for comprehension, developers may first focus on the package comprehension. The packages in the system are of different sizes. For small-sized packages in the system, developers can easily comprehend them. However, for large-sized packages, they are difficult to understand. In this article, we focus on understanding these large-sized packages and propose a novel program comprehension approach for large-sized …

Should We Learn Probabilistic Models For Model Checking? A New Approach And An Empirical Study, Jingyi Wang, Jun Sun, Qixia Yuan, Jun Pang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many automated system analysis techniques (e.g., model checking, model-based testing) rely on first obtaining a model of the system under analysis. System modeling is often done manually, which is often considered as a hindrance to adopt model-based system analysis and development techniques. To overcome this problem, researchers have proposed to automatically “learn” models based on sample system executions and shown that the learned models can be useful sometimes. There are however many questions to be answered. For instance, how much shall we generalize from the observed samples and how fast would learning converge? Or, would the analysis result based on …

In this work, we use player behavior during the closed beta test of the MMORPG ArcheAge as a proxy for an extreme situation: at the end of the closed beta test, all user data is deleted, and thus, the outcome (or penalty) of players' in-game behaviors in the last few days loses its meaning. We analyzed 270 million records of player behavior in the 4th closed beta test of ArcheAge. Our findings show that there are no apparent pandemic behavior changes, but some outlierswere more likely to exhibit anti-social behavior (e.g., player killing). We also found that contrary to the …

Role Of Requirements Engineering In Software Project’S Success, Sujatha Alla
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Despite considerable time and resources spent on the initiation phase of software projects, discrepancies often exist between formal project documentation, customer requirements, and final project specifications. Such discrepancies in the requirements management process can have a very negative impact on final project outcomes. A Business Requirements Document (BRD) constitutes the formal software requirements documentation, which typically includes stakeholders’ needs and expectations and project scope while providing a clear project roadmap and project plan. According to IEEE standards, a BRD should be a structured document that includes specific elements such as functional and technical requirements while incorporating certain traits such as …

Artificial Immune Systems: Applications, Multi-Class Classification, Optimizations, And Analysis, Brian Haroldo Schmidt
Dissertations
The focus of this research is the application of the Artificial Immune System (AIS) paradigm to a new research area along with the modifications necessary to adapt it to a new problem. In the past 10 years, there has been much research into the use of various Machine Learning (ML) algorithms in Network Flow Traffic Classification. AIS algorithms have thus far not been applied to this problem. Because AIS algorithms have been used extensively for Network Intrusion Detection applications, which is a similar area of research, the motivation to extend them to the network flow classification problem is clear.

Protecting Sensitive Data In Clouds Using Active Data Bundles And Agent-Based Secure Multi-Party Computation, Akram Y. Sarhan
Dissertations
Protection of data in cloud computing including distributed environments is a critical concern for many enterprises. This study proposes a solution that protects sensitive data outsourced to a cloud throughout their entire life cycle—both in the cloud as well as outside of the cloud (e.g., during transmission to or from the cloud). The solution enhances the existing data protection approach known as Active Bundle scheme, which uses a Trusted Third Party (ABTTP).
The Active Data Bundle (ADB) was formerly called an Active Bundle (AB). It is a software construct that encapsulates data, metadata, and a virtual machine (VM). The metadata …

Libraries
Academic web search engines have become central to scholarly research. While the fitness of Google Scholar for research purposes has been examined repeatedly, Microsoft Academic and Google Books have not received much attention. Recent studies have much to tell us about the coverage and utility of Google Scholar, its coverage of the sciences, and its utility for evaluating researcher impact. But other aspects have been understudied, such as coverage of the arts and humanities, books, and non-Western, non-English publications. User research has also tapered off. A small number of articles hint at the opportunity for librarians to become expert advisors …

Compression Of Virtual-Machine Memory In Dynamic Malware Analysis, James E. Fowler Ph.D.
Compression Of Virtual-Machine Memory In Dynamic Malware Analysis, James E. Fowler Ph.D.
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Lossless compression of memory dumps from virtual machines that run malware samples is considered with the goal of significantly reducing archival costs in dynamic-malware-analysis applications. Given that, in such dynamic-analysis scenarios, malware samples are typically run in virtual machines just long enough to activate any self-decryption or other detection- avoidance maneuvers, the virtual-machine memory typically changes little from that of the baseline state, with the difference being attributable in large degree to the loading of additional executables and libraries. Consequently, delta coding is proposed to compress the current virtual-machine memory dump by coding its differences with respect to a predicted …

Communication between people counts to the most important information of today’s business. As a result, in case of forensic investigations in big companies, analysis of communication data in general and especially email, as the still most widely used business communication platform with an immense and still growing volume, is a typical task in digital forensics. One of the challenges is to identify the relevant communication partners and structures in the suspects surrounding as quickly as possible in order to react appropriately and identify further targets of evaluation. Due to the amount of emails in typical inboxes, reading through all the …
