Intensity Exposure-Based Bi-Histogram Equalization For Image Enhancement, Tang Jing Rui, Nor Ashidi Mat Isa Jan 2016

Intensity Exposure-Based Bi-Histogram Equalization For Image Enhancement, Tang Jing Rui, Nor Ashidi Mat Isa

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we present a study of the usage of intensity exposure in histogram segmentation and its performance in histogram equalization. Two techniques are proposed: the mean-based bi-histogram equalization plateau limit (mean-BHEPL) or median-based BHEPL (median-BHEPL) and adaptive bi-histogram equalization algorithm (ABHE). Both techniques initially divide the input histogram into two subhistograms through a threshold value computed from the intensity exposure of the image. Histogram clipping for mean-BHEPL and median-BHEPL is then performed on these subhistograms using the mean and median values, respectively. Conventional histogram equalization is also implemented on each clipped subhistogram. The second proposed technique, ABHE, applies …

Pure Fuzzy Hall Effect Sensors For Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor, İbrahi̇m Alişkan, Rüstem Yilmazel

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

An investigation about Hall effect sensors' efficiency is confirmed in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive systems. A fuzzy control algorithm is used as an artificial intelligence controller. Large scale and low slopes are used for creating membership functions and a sensitive controller is obtained. Speed is wanted to be taken under control and a minimum error value is aimed. PMSM drive systems are established using MATLAB-Simulink/SimPower. Simulations are realized with real-time parameters in discrete mode. A fuzzy logic controller is designed by using the MATLAB/Fuzzy Logic Toolbox. A normalization technique and high resolution output of the fuzzy logic controller …

A Current-Based Simple Analog Mppt Circuit For Pv Systems, Bülent Büyükgüzel, Murat Aksoy Jan 2016

A Current-Based Simple Analog Mppt Circuit For Pv Systems, Bülent Büyükgüzel, Murat Aksoy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new single pilot-sensor maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system, consisting of a buck type DC/DC converter, was developed. It is controlled by an analog-based unit. The main difference between the proposed MPPT system and other systems is that the short circuit current of the pilot-PV module in our system is used to control the DC/DC converter. The circuit of the proposed system does not utilize an expensive digital signal processor nor a microcontroller; hence, the cost and the complexity of the system are reduced.

Wireless Sensor Network-Based Extension To Knx Home Automation System, Ahmet Burak Gökbayrak, Sermi̇n Kilivan, Semavi̇ Akin, Anil Çelebi̇, Oğuzhan Urhan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a seamless wireless extension approach to a KNX-based home automation system. The system consists of gateway and switch units specifically designed for this purpose. The gateway acts as the coordinator of the wireless network and a bridge between wireless and KNX networks. Switch units can be operated by a power outlet or battery. With the proposed architecture, it is possible to extend functionality of the KNX to wireless nodes, which consume very low power when they are operated by battery. Experimental results show that a simple yet efficient wireless extension to the KNX system is possible by …

We present the research framework for a taxonomy of online educational peer-assessment systems. This framework enables researchers in technology-supported peer assessment to understand the current landscape of technologies supporting student peer review and assessment, specifically, its affordances and constraints. The framework helps identify the major themes in existing and potential research and formulate an agenda for future studies. It also informs educators and system design practitioners about use cases and design options.

Garbage Collection For General Graphs, Hari Krishnan Jan 2016

Garbage Collection For General Graphs, Hari Krishnan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Garbage collection is moving from being a utility to a requirement of every modern programming language. With multi-core and distributed systems, most programs written recently are heavily multi-threaded and distributed. Distributed and multi-threaded programs are called concurrent programs. Manual memory management is cumbersome and difficult in concurrent programs. Concurrent programming is characterized by multiple independent processes/threads, communication between processes/threads, and uncertainty in the order of concurrent operations. The uncertainty in the order of operations makes manual memory management of concurrent programs difficult. A popular alternative to garbage collection in concurrent programs is to use smart pointers. Smart pointers can collect …

Ambiguityvis: Visualization Of Ambiguity In Graph Layouts, Yong Wang, Qiaomu Shen, Zhiguang Zhou, Min Zhu, Sixiao Yang, Qu Huamin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Node-link diagrams provide an intuitive way to explore networks and have inspired a large number of automated graph layout strategies that optimize aesthetic criteria. However, any particular drawing approach cannot fully satisfy all these criteria simultaneously, producing drawings with visual ambiguities that can impede the understanding of network structure. To bring attention to these potentially problematic areas present in the drawing. this paper presents a technique that highlights common types of visual ambiguities: ambiguous spatial relationships between nodes and edges, visual overlap between community structures, and ambiguity in edge bundling and metanodes. Metrics, including newly proposed metrics for abnormal edge …

Hidden Ciphertext Policy Attribute-Based Encryption Under Standard Assumptions, Tran Viet Xuan Phuong, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo Jan 2016

Hidden Ciphertext Policy Attribute-Based Encryption Under Standard Assumptions, Tran Viet Xuan Phuong, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose two new ciphertext policy attributebased encryption (CP-ABE) schemes where the access policy is defined by AND-gate with wildcard. In the first scheme, we present a new technique that uses only one group element to represent an attribute, while the existing ABE schemes of the same type need to use three different group elements to represent an attribute for the three possible values (namely, positive, negative, and wildcard). Our new technique leads to a new CP-ABE scheme with constant ciphertext size, which, however, cannot hide the access policy used for encryption. The main contribution of this paper is to …

Information Source Detection Via Maximum A Posteriori Estimation, Biao Chang, Feida Zhu, Enhong Chen, Qi. Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The problem of information source detection, whose goal is to identify the source of a piece of information from a diffusion process (e.g., computer virus, rumor, epidemic, and so on), has attracted ever-increasing attention from research community in recent years. Although various methods have been proposed, such as those based on centrality, spectral and belief propagation, the existing solutions still suffer from high time complexity and inadequate effectiveness. To this end, we revisit this problem in the paper and present a comprehensive study from the perspective of likelihood approximation. Different from many previous works, we consider both infected and uninfected …

3d Fpga Cell Matrix By Self-Assembly, Jeffrey Udall Jan 2016

3d Fpga Cell Matrix By Self-Assembly, Jeffrey Udall

Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience

Physical size limitations in miniaturizing two-dimensional (2D) transistors are becoming more difficult to overcome. In order to continue increasing the processing power of electronic circuits, new design paradigms are needed. Three-dimensional (3D) architectures provide a solution to this issue and are currently being implemented via wafer stacking. However, more significant gains in terms of packing and speed can be achieved by CMOS components with truly integrated 3D cellular architectures. One of these is the Cell Matrix, a self-configurable defect- and fault-tolerant architecture, which is ideally suited for ultra large-scale integration. For this project, we worked to expand the Cell Matrix …

Emerging Adaptive Architectures For Biomolecular Computation, Matthew Fleetwood Jan 2016

Emerging Adaptive Architectures For Biomolecular Computation, Matthew Fleetwood

Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience

The goal of this work is to explore applications of reservoir computing in biomolecular computation. Reservoir computing is a unique model for representing a mapping from one instance in time to a specific output. A neural network of randomly connected neurons is linked with a single output neuron or multiple output neurons. The output neurons are capable of mapping inputs to desired outputs using adaptable algorithms. This framework is investigated by using the Python programming language and object oriented design and programming. Neurons are created in programs by bundling information like input data and attributes of the network, which utilize …

Elderly Medication Adherence With The Internet Of Things, Xiaoping Toh, Hwee Xian Tan, Hwee-Pink Tan, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the growth in elderly population in Singapore, healthcare expenditure and prevalence of age-related illnesses are expected to increase. Non-adherence among the elderly is a common issue that leads to adverse health complications, particularly among those with chronic conditions. However, existing studies typically focus on identifying predictors of medication adherence, and provide neither user-friendly nor actionable solutions that can be easily adopted by the elderly. In this paper, we use the Internet of Things to monitor medication adherence and detect changes in medication consumption patterns among the elderly, thus enabling timely interventions by caregivers to take place. Sensor-enabled medication boxes …

Smart Ambient Sound Analysis Via Structured Statistical Modeling, Jialie Shen, Liqiang Nie, Tat Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we introduce a novel framework called SASA (Smart Ambient Sound Analyser) to support different ambient audio mining tasks (e.g., audio classification and location estimation). To gain comprehensive ambient sound modelling, SASA extracts a variety of acoustic features from different sound components (e.g., music, voice and background), and translates them into structured information. This significantly enhances quality of audio content representation. Further, distinguished from existing approaches, SASA’s multilayered architecture seamlessly integrates mixture models and aPEGASOS (adaptive PEGASOS) SVM algorithm into a unified classification framework. The approach can leverage complimentary strengths of both models. Experimental results based on three …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We espouse a vision of small data-based immersive retail analytics, where a combination of sensor data, from personal wearable-devices and store-deployed sensors & IoT devices, is used to create real-time, individualized services for in-store shoppers. Key challenges include (a) appropriate joint mining of sensor & wearable data to capture a shopper’s product level interactions, and (b) judicious triggering of power-hungry wearable sensors (e.g., camera) to capture only relevant portions of a shopper’s in-store activities. To explore the feasibility of our vision, we conducted experiments with 5 smartwatch-wearing users who interacted with objects placed on cupboard racks in our lab (to …

Data Analytics On Consumer Behavior In Omni-Channel Retail Banking, Card And Payment Services, Geng Dan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Innovations in financial services have created challenges for banks that Information Systems (IS) research can address. My interests involve transaction cost theory, substitution and complementarity theory, and consumer informedness theory to understand consumer behavior and firm performance in the omni-channel world of digital banking. At a high level, my research inquiry asks: How can financial institutions take advantage of the deep insights that data analytics and management science modeling create on consumer behavior and channel management decision-making? And how can changes in payments and services in retail banking be understood in spatial and temporal terms? I am working on three …

Online Arima Algorithms For Time Series Prediction, Chenghao Liu, Hoi, Steven C. H., Peilin Zhao, Jianling Sun Jan 2016

Online Arima Algorithms For Time Series Prediction, Chenghao Liu, Hoi, Steven C. H., Peilin Zhao, Jianling Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) is one of the most popular linear models for time series forecasting due to its nice statistical properties and great flexibility. However, its parameters are estimated in a batch manner and its noise terms are often assumed to be strictly bounded, which restricts its applications and makes it inefficient for handling large-scale real data. In this paper, we propose online learning algorithms for estimating ARIMA models under relaxed assumptions on the noise terms, which is suitable to a wider range of applications and enjoys high computational efficiency. The idea of our ARIMA method is to …

On Detecting Maximal Quasi Antagonistic Communities In Signed Graphs, Ming Gao, Ee-Peng Lim, David Lo, Philips Kokoh Prasetyo Jan 2016

On Detecting Maximal Quasi Antagonistic Communities In Signed Graphs, Ming Gao, Ee-Peng Lim, David Lo, Philips Kokoh Prasetyo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many networks can be modeled as signed graphs. These include social networks, and relationships/interactions networks. Detecting sub-structures in such networks helps us understand user behavior, predict links, and recommend products. In this paper, we detect dense sub-structures from a signed graph, called quasi antagonistic communities (QACs). An antagonistic community consists of two groups of users expressing positive relationships within each group but negative relationships across groups. Instead of requiring complete set of negative links across its groups, a QAC allows a small number of inter-group negative links to be missing. We propose an algorithm, Mascot, to find all maximal quasi …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multi-agent teamwork and defender-attacker security games are two areas that are currently receiving significant attention within multi-agent systems research. Unfortunately, despite the need for effective teamwork among multiple defenders, little has been done to harness the teamwork research in security games. The problem that this paper seeks to solve is the coordination of decentralized defender agents in the presence of uncertainty while securing targets against an observing adversary. To address this problem, we offer the following novel contributions in this paper: (i) New model of security games with defender teams that coordinate under uncertainty; (ii) New algorithm based on column …

Adaptive Speed Observer With Disturbance Torque Compensation For Sensorless Induction Motor Drives Using Rt-Lab, Mohan Krishna, Febin Daya Jan 2016

Adaptive Speed Observer With Disturbance Torque Compensation For Sensorless Induction Motor Drives Using Rt-Lab, Mohan Krishna, Febin Daya

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents an improved version of the extended Luenberger observer with joint estimation of rotor speed and disturbance torque. The mechanical model of the induction motor is also utilized for the estimation of disturbance torque to add to the robustness of the observer. The estimated disturbance torque is treated as a model disturbance and physically incorporated into the observer state dynamic equation. The dynamic performance and efficacy of the modified observer is tested for variations in external load and inertia coefficient in the mechanical model. The above observer model is first built offline, using MATLAB/Simulink block sets, and simulated. …

The Phononic Crystal Interface Layer Determines Slow-Wave And Pulse Broadening Effects, Li Sun, Aiming Ji, Jialing Hu, Canyan Zhu, Lijun Zhang, Jianfeng Yang, Lingfeng Mao Jan 2016

The Phononic Crystal Interface Layer Determines Slow-Wave And Pulse Broadening Effects, Li Sun, Aiming Ji, Jialing Hu, Canyan Zhu, Lijun Zhang, Jianfeng Yang, Lingfeng Mao

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The relationship among the slow-wave and echo pulse broadening effects in reflected acoustic waves and the width of the interface layer of phononic crystal has been theoretically investigated. It has been observed that not only the slow time for the reflected acoustic wave but also the echo pulse broadening reaches a saturation point as the size of the phononic crystal increases. From the viewpoint of the acoustic wave, there is an interface layer in the crystal that determines the slow-wave and the echo pulse broadening effects. The longest slow time, which is the time needed for transmitting 0.08 periods of …

A Hybrid Search Method Of Wrapper Feature Selection By Chaos Particle Swarm Optimization And Local Search, Mohammad Masoud Javidi, Nasibeh Emami Jan 2016

A Hybrid Search Method Of Wrapper Feature Selection By Chaos Particle Swarm Optimization And Local Search, Mohammad Masoud Javidi, Nasibeh Emami

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Finding a subset of features from a large dataset is a problem that arises in many fields of study. Since the increasing number of features has extended the computational cost of a system, it is necessary to design and implement a system with the least number of features. The purpose of feature selection is to find the best subset of features from the original ones. The result of the best selection is improving the computational cost and the accuracy of the prediction. A large number of algorithms have been proposed for feature subset selection. In this paper, we propose a …

A Ring Crossover Genetic Algorithm For The Unit Commitment Problem, Syed Basit Ali Bukhari, Aftab Ahmad, Syed Auon Raza, Muhammad Noman Siddique Jan 2016

A Ring Crossover Genetic Algorithm For The Unit Commitment Problem, Syed Basit Ali Bukhari, Aftab Ahmad, Syed Auon Raza, Muhammad Noman Siddique

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The unit commitment problem (UCP) is a nonlinear, mixed-integer, constraint optimization problem and is considered a complex problem in electrical power systems. It is the combination of two interlinked subproblems, namely the generator scheduling problem and the generation allocation problem. In large systems, the UCP turns out to be increasingly complicated due to the large number of possible ON and OFF combinations of units in the power system over a scheduling time horizon. Due to the insufficiency of conventional approaches in handling large systems, numerous metaheuristic techniques are being developed for solving this problem. The genetic algorithm (GA) is one …

A Multiobjective Tuning Approach Of Power System Stabilizers Using Particle Swarm Optimization, Hilal Labdelaoui, Fares Boudjema, Djamel Boukhetala

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This work presents an optimal tuning approach of power system stabilizers (PSSs) using multiobjective particle swarm optimization. Two types of PSSs are investigated, the conventional speed-based PSS type and a dual-input PSS type that uses the accelerating power as an additional input. The tuning problem of these PSSs is formulated as a minimization problem of a vector objective function characterizing the damping and the transient performance of the closed-loop system. A 3-machine 9-bus power system example is considered, and the speed-constrained multiobjective particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to solve the optimization problem. The results show that trade-offs exist between …

The matrix converter or pulse width modulated frequency changer, invented in the mid-1980s, is a direct power conversion device that can generate a variable voltage and frequency from a variable input source. Industrially, it is applied in adjustable speed control of induction motor drive, power quality conditioner, and traction applications. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the steady state characteristic behavior of an induction machine in terms of its speed and torque when driven by a three phase indirect matrix converter at reduced harmonics. Similarly, projecting an AC-AC matrix converter that ensures a uniform synchronization in frequency and …

An Hf/Uhf Dual Mode Rfid Transponder Antenna And Hf Range Extension Using Uhf Wireless Power Transmission, Mustafa Murat Bi̇lgi̇ç, Korkut Yeği̇n Jan 2016

An Hf/Uhf Dual Mode Rfid Transponder Antenna And Hf Range Extension Using Uhf Wireless Power Transmission, Mustafa Murat Bi̇lgi̇ç, Korkut Yeği̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

An HF/UHF compatible RFID transponder antenna is designed, simulated, and measured for dual band operation and HF range extension. A dual mode compatible RFID transponder antenna has the benefits of each mode and eliminates the disadvantages of single mode operation. One of the major drawbacks of UHF antennas is their poor performance when the tag is placed on or near metallic objects. To overcome this shortcoming, two-layer substrate with degenerate grounded is used and a 4-turn spiral antenna is placed on the top and bottom parts of the substrate for HF operation. The co-existence of both antennas affects standalone performances …

Electric Arc Furnace Power Quality Improvement By Applying A New Digital And Predicted-Based Tsc Control, Mehdi Torabian Esfahani, Behrooz Vahidi Jan 2016

Electric Arc Furnace Power Quality Improvement By Applying A New Digital And Predicted-Based Tsc Control, Mehdi Torabian Esfahani, Behrooz Vahidi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Static VAR compensators (SVC) can improve some of the power quality (PQ) indices such as voltage flicker, unbalances, and power factors in power systems if properly controlled. Different nonlinear and time-varying loads generate these parameters. One of the great nonlinear loads is the electric arc furnace (EAF), which causes waveform distortions, voltage unbalances, and fluctuations. In this paper, a new digital and prediction-based control for thyristor switched capacitors (TSCs) was proposed to compensate an actual steel industrial plant. The digital control was based on generating adequate synchronous pulses, calculating required suitable susceptance, and measuring correct reactive power. The proposed TSC …

Optimal Siting And Sizing Of Rapid Charging Station For Electric Vehicles Considering Bangi City Road Network In Malaysia, Mainul Islam, Hussain Shareef, Azah Mohamed

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Recently, electric vehicles (EVs) have been seen as a felicitous option towards a less carbon-intensive road transport. The key issue in this system is recharging the EV batteries before they are exhausted. Thus, charging stations (CSs) should be carefully located to make sure EV users can access a CS within their driving range. Considering geographic information and traffic density, this paper proposes an optimization overture for optimal siting and sizing of a rapid CS (RCS). It aims to minimize the daily total cost (which includes the cost of substation energy loss, traveling cost of EVs to the CS, and investment, …
