Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In our preliminary study, we proposed a smartphone-integrated, unobtrusive electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring system, Sinabro, which monitors a user's ECG opportunistically during daily smartphone use without explicit user intervention. The proposed system also monitors ECG-derived features, such as heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV), to support the pervasive healthcare apps for smartphones based on the user's high-level contexts, such as stress and affective state levels. In this study, we have extended the Sinabro system by: (1) upgrading the sensor device; (2) improving the feature extraction process; and (3) evaluating extensions of the system. We evaluated these extensions with a …

Mobile crowd-tasking markets are growing at an unprecedented rate with increasing number of smartphone users. Such platforms differ from their online counterparts in that they demand physical mobility and can benefit from smartphone processors and sensors for verification purposes. Despite the importance of such mobile crowd-tasking markets, little is known about the labor supply dynamics and mobility patterns of the users. In this paper we design, develop and experiment with a realwporld mobile crowd-tasking platform, called TA$Ker. Our contributions are two-fold: (a) We develop TA$Ker, a system that allows us to empirically study the worker responses to push vs. pull …

Learning To Find Topic Experts In Twitter Via Different Relations, Wei Wei, Gao Cong, Chunyan Miao, Feida Zhu, Guohui Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Expert finding has become a hot topic along with the flourishing of social networks, such as micro-blogging services like Twitter. Finding experts in Twitter is an important problem because tweets from experts are valuable sources that carry rich information (e.g., trends) in various domains. However, previous methods cannot be directly applied to Twitter expert finding problem. Recently, several attempts use the relations among users and Twitter Lists for expert finding. Nevertheless, these approaches only partially utilize such relations. To this end, we develop a probabilistic method to jointly exploit three types of relations (i.e., follower relation, user-list relation and list-list …

Improving The Sensitivity Of Unobtrusive Inactivity Detection In Sensor-Enabled Homes For The Elderly, Alvin C. Valera, Hwee-Pink Tan, Liming Bai
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Unobtrusive in-home monitoring systems are gaining acceptability and are being deployed to enable relatives and caregivers to remotely monitor and provide timely care to their elderly loved ones or senior clients, respectively, who are living independently. Such systems can provide information about nonmovement or inactivity of the elderly resident. As prolonged inactivity could mean potential danger, several algorithms have been proposed to automatically detect unusually long durations of inactivity. Such schemes, however, suffer from low sensitivity due to their high detection latency. In this paper, we propose Dwell Time-enhanced Dynamic Threshold (DTDT), a scheme for computing adaptive alert thresholds that …

Value-Inspired Service Design In Elderly Home-Monitoring Systems, Na Liu, Sandeep Purao, Hwee-Pink Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The provision of elderly home-monitoring systems to enhance aging-in-place requires the service to meet the needs of both the elderly and their caregivers. The design of such IT services requires interdisciplinary efforts to look beyond the technical requirements. Taking a value-inspired design perspective, the study argues that service design for promoting aging-in-place needs to reconcile the values of both the elderly and caregivers. Drawn from the framework of basic human values and the unique experience of the SHINESeniors project, the study extracts the core values for elderly and caregivers using a multi-method case analysis. We suggest that both system and …

Cca-Secure Keyed-Fully Homomorphic Encryption, Junzuo Lai, Deng, Robert H., Changshe Ma, Kouichi Sakurai, Jian Weng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To simultaneously achieve CCA security and homomorphic property for encryption, Emura et al. introduced a new cryptographic primitive named keyed-homomorphic encryption, in which homomorphic ciphertext manipulations can only be performed by someone holding a devoted evaluation key which, by itself, does not enable decryption. A keyed-homomorphic encryption scheme should provide CCA2 security when the evaluation key is unavailable to the adversary and remain CCA1-secure when the evaluation key is exposed. While existing keyed-homomorphic encryption schemes only allow simple computations on encrypted data, our goal is to construct CCA-secure keyed-fully homomorphic encryption (keyed-FHE) capable of evaluating any functions on encrypted data …

Prolonged working hours are a primary cause of stress, work related injuries (e.g, RSIs), and work-life imbalance in employees at a workplace. As reported by some studies, taking timely breaks from continuous work not only reduces stress and exhaustion but also improves productivity, employee bonding, and camaraderie. Our goal is to build a system that automatically detects breaks thereby assisting in maintaining healthy work-break balance. In this paper, we focus on detecting foosball breaks of employees at a workplace using a smartwatch. We selected foosball as it is one of the most commonly played games at many workplaces in the …

Developers prefer to utilize third-party libraries when they implement some functionalities and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are frequently used by them. Facing an unfamiliar API, developers tend to consult tutorials as learning resources. Unfortunately, the segments explaining a specific API scatter across tutorials. Hence, it remains a challenging issue to find the relevant segments. In this study, we propose a more accurate model to find the exact tutorial fragments explaining APIs. This new model consists of a text classifier with domain specific features. More specifically, we discover two important indicators to complement traditional text based features, namely co-occurrence APIs and …

Nowadays, most software use multiple programming languages to implement certain functionalities based on the strengths and weaknesses of different languages. Researchers in the past have studied the impact of independent programming languages on software quality, however, there has been little or no research on the impact of multiple languages on the quality of software. Does the use of multiple languages cause more bugs? Are certain languages when used with other languages make software more bug prone? What are the relationships between multi-language usage and various bug categories? In this study, we perform a large scale empirical investigation to shed light …

Detection Of Bird Nests In Overhead Catenary System Images For High-Speed Rail, Xiao Wu, Ping Yuan, Qiang Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo, Jun-Yan He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The high-speed rail system provides a fast, reliable and comfortable means to transport large number of travelers over long distances. The existence of bird nests in overhead catenary system (OCS) can hazard to the safety of the high-speed rails, which will potentially result in long time delays and expensive damages. A vision-based intelligent inspection system capable of automatic detection of bird nests built on overhead catenary would avoid the damages and increase the reliability and punctuality, and therefore is attractive for a high-speed railway system. However, OCS images exhibit great variations with lighting changes, illumination conditions and complex backgrounds, which …

Opinion Question Answering By Sentiment Clip Localization, Lei Pang, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This article considers multimedia question answering beyond factoid and how-to questions. We are interested in searching videos for answering opinion-oriented questions that are controversial and hotly debated. Examples of questions include "Should Edward Snowden be pardoned?" and "Obamacare-unconstitutional or not?". These questions often invoke emotional response, either positively or negatively, hence are likely to be better answered by videos than texts, due to the vivid display of emotional signals visible through facial expression and speaking tone. Nevertheless, a potential answer of duration 60s may be embedded in a video of 10min, resulting in degraded user experience compared to reading the …

The only official documentation of the lawmaking process at the California Legislature is unedited video recordings of committee hearings, bill texts, votes and analyses. While the bills resulting from these hearings are clear, using video recordings to understand how a bill was created is far too laborious for the average citizen. To increase public transparency, a service that provides easier access to the bill creation process was needed. In response to this need, the Digital Democracy initiative was established at Cal Poly by the Honorable Sam Blakeslee, former California State Senator and founder of the Institute for Advanced Technology and …

Understanding Effects Of Autonomous Agent Timing On Human-Agent Teams Using Iterative Modeling, Simulation And Human-In-The-Loop Experimentation, Tyler J. Goodman
Theses and Dissertations
Recent U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory strategy documents have suggested the need for research in human-agent teaming. Teaming supports a dynamic shift in roles between the human and the agent, depending upon human performance and mission needs. Further, because the performance of these agents will be highly dependent upon the state of the human and the mission, this strategy suggests the need for increased use of modeling to provide a broader understanding of the automated agent’s behavior. This thesis applies a combination of static modeling in SysML activity diagrams, dynamic modeling of human and agent behavior in IMPRINT, and human …

Silicon Valley in northern California is the proverbial hub of technological innovation and industry. Its namesake derives from the fact that silicon acts as the main component in modern electronics; however, a new material called graphene is challenging its role. In its early years of research, it was evident that the qualities of graphene far exceeded expectations. Industries are going mad trying to come up with applications and consumer products. While headway has been made, it is hard to say how long it will take to see products advertising their new graphene capabilities. Before touch screens or graphene-based microprocessors can …

The Implications Of Rfid Technology In University Id Cards, Michael Beaver
Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer
Radio frequency identification (RFID) chips have been rising in popularity because of their usefulness and convenience, and have now made their way into the ID cards of universities. An RFID chip is an identification device that, when powered by some nearby source, sends out a signal with information that was stored in the chip. RFID physical security systems work just like a lock and key, with the RFID chip acting as the key. Instead of having a unique pattern, RFID chips have an identification code that is read by the lock. Some RFID chips also hide this code behind a …

The world is in the midst of a technology revolution. Each day, new computing devices are introduced, hundreds of new websites are created, and people who have never used the Internet are trying it out for the first time. Nearly two thirds of Americans currently own a smartphone, and that number will only continue to climb (Fingas, 2014). Even cars, thermostats and refrigerators are becoming computerized and connected. This isn't groundbreaking information; most people are aware of this. What isn’t common knowledge, however, is who creates this technology. How does Google always seem to know exactly what you are asking …

It remains unclear whether causal, rather than merely correlational, relationships in molecular networks can be inferred in complex biological settings. Here we describe the HPN-DREAM network inference challenge, which focused on learning causal influences in signaling networks. We used phosphoprotein data from cancer cell lines as well as in silico data from a nonlinear dynamical model. Using the phosphoprotein data, we scored more than 2,000 networks submitted by challenge participants. The networks spanned 32 biological contexts and were scored in terms of causal validity with respect to unseen interventional data. A number of approaches were effective, and incorporating known biology …

Mdsm - A Systems Architecture Approach To Complex Systems Design, David Sherwin Threm
Theses and Dissertations
The engineering of enterprise software systems suffers from an inherent lack of creativity and innovation, and are often left to user-centric incremental changes that are simply not disruptive enough for business needs. A design-driven approach to systems creates opportunities for transformative evolution of such systems that are both immediate and futuristic in their impact. Software systems stability can be maintained and monitored during evolution utilizing architectural-level, program-level and information-level stability metrics. Despite increasing complexities involved in the design, development and testing of such large-scale software systems, they are often predicated by simple techniques for decomposition, generalization and specification. However, as …

Rowhammering: A Physical Approach To Gaining Unauthorized Access, Niccolas A. Ricci
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
As the information density of DRAM increases, the problems faced by natural decay and cell leakage have become increasingly prevalent. As cells become more closely packed they may leak their charge into adjacent cells, changing their state, and producing memory error. Researchers attempted to intentionally produce memory error by repeatedly accessing cell rows adjacent to each other, a technique which was later labeled "rowhammering". Breakthroughs in research demonstrate working examples of a rowhammer used to exploit memory for unauthorized access. In this paper, I will describe various approaches to rowhammering, discuss potential approaches for protection, and will demonstrate some of …

Concurrent Compaction In Jvm Garbage Collection, Jacob P. Opdahl
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
This paper provides a brief overview of both garbage collection (GC) of memory and parallel processing. We then cover how parallel processing applies to GC. Specifically, these concepts are focused within the context of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). With that foundation, we look at various algorithms that perform compaction of fragmented memory during the GC process. These algorithms are designed to run concurrent to the application running. Such concurrently compacting GC behavior stems from a desire to reduce \stop-the-world" pauses of an application.

DNA methylation is an important epigenetic event that effects gene expression during development and various diseases such as cancer. Understanding the mechanism of action of DNA methylation is important for downstream analysis. In the Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation 450K array, there are tens of probes associated with each gene. Given methylation intensities of all these probes, it is necessary to compute which of these probes are most representative of the gene centric methylation level. In this study, we developed a feature selection algorithm based on sequential forward selection that utilized different classification methods to compute gene centric DNA methylation using probe …

Human Activity Prediction By Mapping Grouplets To Recurrent Self-Organizing Map, Qianru Sun, Hong Liu, Mengyuan Liu, Tianwei Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Human activity prediction is defined as inferring the high-level activity category with the observation of only a few action units. It is very meaningful for time-critical applications such as emergency surveillance. For efficient prediction, we represent the ongoing human activity by using body part movements and taking full advantage of inherent sequentiality, then find the best matching activity template by a proper aligning measurement. In streaming videos, dense spatio-temporal interest points (STIPs) are first extracted as low-level descriptors for their high detection efficiency. Then, sparse grouplets, i.e., clustered point groups, are located to represent body part movements, for which we propose …
