Leather is an integral part of the world economy and a substantial income source for developing countries. Despite government regulations on leather tannery waste emissions, inspection agencies lack adequate enforcement resources, and tanneries’ toxic wastewaters wreak havoc on surrounding ecosystems and communities. Previous works in this domain stop short of generating executable solutions for inspection agencies. We introduce NECTAR - the first security game application to generate environmental compliance inspection schedules. NECTAR’s game model addresses many important real-world constraints: a lack of defender resources is alleviated via a secondary inspection type; imperfect inspections are modeled via a heterogeneous failure rate; …

The Frustrations And Benefits Of Mobile Device Usage In The Home When Co-Present With Family Members, Erick Oduor, Carman Neustaedter, William Odom, Anthony Tang, Niala Moallem, Melanie Tory, Pourang Irani Jun 2016

The Frustrations And Benefits Of Mobile Device Usage In The Home When Co-Present With Family Members, Erick Oduor, Carman Neustaedter, William Odom, Anthony Tang, Niala Moallem, Melanie Tory, Pourang Irani

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile devices have begun to raise questions around the potential for overuse when in the presence of family or friends. As such, we conducted a diary and interview study to understand how people use mobile devices in the presence of others at home, and how this shapes their behavior and household dynamics. Results show that family members become frustrated when others do non-urgent activities on their phones in the presence of others. Yet people often guess at what others are doing because of the personal nature of mobile devices. In some cases, people developed strategies to provide a greater sense …

Exemplar-Driven Top-Down Saliency Detection Via Deep Association, Shengfeng He, Rynson W. H. Lau, Qingxiong Yang Jun 2016

Exemplar-Driven Top-Down Saliency Detection Via Deep Association, Shengfeng He, Rynson W. H. Lau, Qingxiong Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Top-down saliency detection is a knowledge-driven search task. While some previous methods aim to learn this "knowledge" from category-specific data, others transfer existing annotations in a large dataset through appearance matching. In contrast, we propose in this paper a locateby-exemplar strategy. This approach is challenging, as we only use a few exemplars (up to 4) and the appearances among the query object and the exemplars can be very different. To address it, we design a two-stage deep model to learn the intra-class association between the exemplars and query objects. The first stage is for learning object-to-object association, and the second …

Recipient Revocable Identity-Based Broadcast Encryption: How To Revoke Some Recipients In Ibbe Without Knowledge Of The Plaintext, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, Rongmao Chen, Yi Mu, Fuchun Guo, Yang-Wai Chow Jun 2016

Recipient Revocable Identity-Based Broadcast Encryption: How To Revoke Some Recipients In Ibbe Without Knowledge Of The Plaintext, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, Rongmao Chen, Yi Mu, Fuchun Guo, Yang-Wai Chow

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present the notion of recipient-revocable identity-based broadcast encryption scheme. In this notion, a content provider will produce encrypted content and send them to a third party (which is a broadcaster). This third party will be able to revoke some identities from the ciphertext. We present a security model to capture these requirements, as well as a concrete construction. The ciphertext consists of k + 3 group elements, assuming that the maximum number of revocation identities is k. That is, the ciphertext size is linear in the maximal size of R, where R is the revocation identity …

Serendipity-Driven Celebrity Video Hyperlinking, Shujun Yang, Lei Pang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Benoit Huet Jun 2016

Serendipity-Driven Celebrity Video Hyperlinking, Shujun Yang, Lei Pang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Benoit Huet

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This demo showcases the utility of video hyperlinks with celebrities as the link anchors and their social circles as targets, aiming to help users quickly explore the aboutness of a celebrity by link traversal. Through content analysis, our system embeds hyperlinks into videos such that users can click-and-jump between celebrity faces in different videos to get-to-know their social circles. One peculiar feature is the ability of the system in providing links that maximize users' chance encounter, or serendipitous experience, beyond information need. Our system is enabled by two key components, name-face association and diversity-based ranking, for the aboutness and serendipity …

Video Modeling And Learning On Riemannian Manifold For Emotion Recognition In The Wild, Mengyi Liu, Ruiping Wang, Shaoxin Li, Zhiwu Huang, Shiguang Shan, Xilin Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present the method for our submission to the emotion recognition in the wild challenge (EmotiW). The challenge is to automatically classify the emotions acted by human subjects in video clips under real-world environment. In our method, each video clip can be represented by three types of image set models (i.e. linear subspace, covariance matrix, and Gaussian distribution) respectively, which can all be viewed as points residing on some Riemannian manifolds. Then different Riemannian kernels are employed on these set models correspondingly for similarity/ distance measurement. For classification, three types of classifiers, i.e. kernel SVM, logistic regression, …

(Deterministic) Hierarchical Identity-Based Encryption From Learning With Rounding Over Small Modulus, Fuyang Fang, Bao Li, Xianhui Lu, Yamin Liu, Dingding Jia, Haiyang Xue Jun 2016

(Deterministic) Hierarchical Identity-Based Encryption From Learning With Rounding Over Small Modulus, Fuyang Fang, Bao Li, Xianhui Lu, Yamin Liu, Dingding Jia, Haiyang Xue

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a hierarchical identity-based encryption (HIBE) scheme in the random oracle (RO) model based on the learning with rounding (LWR) problem over small modulus $q$. Compared with the previous HIBE schemes based on the learning with errors (LWE) problem, the ciphertext expansion ratio of our scheme can be decreased to 1/2. Then, we utilize the HIBE scheme to construct a deterministic hierarchical identity-based encryption (D-HIBE) scheme based on the LWR problem over small modulus. Finally, with the technique of binary tree encryption (BTE) we can construct HIBE and D-HIBE schemes in the standard model based on …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This study explores the proposition that medical facility waiting rooms are an opportune setting to engage with and educate patients while they are waiting for care. In collaboration with emergency department (ED) personnel, we developed ER Hero, a tablet-based application for waiting rooms that introduces patients to ED professionals and operations through mini-games and story-like interaction. We evaluated this prototype with human participants to determine how well it performed when compared to paper-based information disclosure presenting the same information. Participants using the application exhibited increased ED knowledge, decreased nervousness, and increased interest. The gamified application outperformed a paper-based approach on …

Skewer: Sentiment Knowledge Extraction With Entity Recognition, Christopher James Wu Jun 2016

Skewer: Sentiment Knowledge Extraction With Entity Recognition, Christopher James Wu

Master's Theses

The California state legislature introduces approximately 5,000 new bills each legislative session. While the legislative hearings are recorded on video, the recordings are not easily accessible to the public. The lack of official transcripts or summaries also increases the effort required to gain meaningful insight from those recordings. Therefore, the news media and the general population are largely oblivious to what transpires during legislative sessions.

Digital Democracy, a project started by the Cal Poly Institute for Advanced Technology and Public Policy, is an online platform created to bring transparency to the California legislature. It features a searchable database of state …

Master's Theses

The internet has matured into the focal point of our era. Its ecosystem is vast, complex, and in many regards unaccounted for. One of the most prevalent aspects of the internet is spam. Similar to the rest of the internet, spam has evolved from simply meaning ‘unwanted emails’ to a blanket term that encompasses any unsolicited or illegitimate content that appears in the wide range of media that exists on the internet.

Many forms of spam permeate the internet, and spam architects continue to develop tools and methods to avoid detection. On the other side, cyber security engineers continue to …

Packet Filter Approach To Detect Denial Of Service Attacks, Essa Yahya M Muharish Jun 2016

Packet Filter Approach To Detect Denial Of Service Attacks, Essa Yahya M Muharish

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Denial of service attacks (DoS) are a common threat to many online services. These attacks aim to overcome the availability of an online service with massive traffic from multiple sources. By spoofing legitimate users, an attacker floods a target system with a high quantity of packets or connections to crash its network resources, bandwidth, equipment, or servers. Packet filtering methods are the most known way to prevent these attacks via identifying and blocking the spoofed attack from reaching its target. In this project, the extent of the DoS attacks problem and attempts to prevent it are explored. The attacks categories …

Empirical analyses indicate that the surrounding behaviors are robust to variations on the shape of the object of interest, communication loss, and robot failures.

Using Perceptually Grounded Semantic Models To Autonomously Convey Meaning Through Visual Art, Derrall L. Heath Jun 2016

Using Perceptually Grounded Semantic Models To Autonomously Convey Meaning Through Visual Art, Derrall L. Heath

Theses and Dissertations

Developing advanced semantic models is important in building computational systems that can not only understand language but also convey ideas and concepts to others. Semantic models can allow a creative image-producing-agent to autonomously produce artifacts that communicate an intended meaning. This notion of communicating meaning through art is often considered a necessary part of eliciting an aesthetic experience in the viewer and can thus enhance the (perceived) creativity of the agent. Computational creativity, a subfield of artificial intelligence, deals with designing computational systems and algorithms that either automatically create original and functional products, or that augment the ability of humans …

Termination, Correctness And Relative Correctness, Nafi Diallo May 2016

Termination, Correctness And Relative Correctness, Nafi Diallo

Dissertations

Over the last decade, research in verification and formal methods has been the subject of increased interest with the need of more secure and dependable software. At the heart of software dependability is the concept of software fault, defined in the literature as the adjudged or hypothesized cause of an error. This definition, which lacks precision, presents at least two challenges with regard to using formal methods: (1) Adjudging and hypothesizing are highly subjective human endeavors; (2) The concept of error is itself insufficiently defined, since it depends on a detailed characterization of correct system states at each stage of …

A Data Science Approach To Pattern Discovery In Complex Structures With Applications In Bioinformatics, Lei Hua May 2016

A Data Science Approach To Pattern Discovery In Complex Structures With Applications In Bioinformatics, Lei Hua

Dissertations

Pattern discovery aims to find interesting, non-trivial, implicit, previously unknown and potentially useful patterns in data. This dissertation presents a data science approach for discovering patterns or motifs from complex structures, particularly complex RNA structures. RNA secondary and tertiary structure motifs are very important in biological molecules, which play multiple vital roles in cells. A lot of work has been done on RNA motif annotation. However, pattern discovery in RNA structure is less studied. In the first part of this dissertation, an ab initio algorithm, named DiscoverR, is introduced for pattern discovery in RNA secondary structures. This algorithm works by …

Schema-Aware Keyword Search On Linked Data, Ananya Dass May 2016

Schema-Aware Keyword Search On Linked Data, Ananya Dass

Dissertations

Keyword search is a popular technique for querying the ever growing repositories of RDF graph data on the Web. This is due to the fact that the users do not need to master complex query languages (e.g., SQL, SPARQL) and they do not need to know the underlying structure of the data on the Web to compose their queries. Keyword search is simple and flexible. However, it is at the same time ambiguous since a keyword query can be interpreted in different ways. This feature of keyword search poses at least two challenges: (a) identifying relevant results among a multitude …

Collaborative Development Of A Small Business Emergency Planning Model, Arthur Henry Hendela May 2016

Collaborative Development Of A Small Business Emergency Planning Model, Arthur Henry Hendela

Dissertations

Small businesses, which are defined by the US Small Business Administration as entities with less than 500 employees, suffer interruptions from diverse risks such as financial events, legal situations, or severe storms exemplified by Hurricane Sandy. Proper preparations can help lessen the length of the interruption and put employees and owners back to work. Large corporations generally have large budgets available for planning, business continuity, and disaster recovery. Small businesses must decide which risks are the most important and how best to mitigate those risks using minimal resources.

This research uses a series of surveys followed by mathematical modeling to …

Mediating Chance Encounters Through Opportunistic Social Matching, Julia M. Mayer May 2016

Mediating Chance Encounters Through Opportunistic Social Matching, Julia M. Mayer

Dissertations

Chance encounters, the unintended meeting between people unfamiliar with each other, serve as an important social lubricant helping people to create new social ties, such as making new friends or finding an activity, study or collaboration partner. Unfortunately, social barriers often prevent chance encounters in environments where people do not know each other and people have to rely on serendipity to meet or be introduced to interesting people around them. Little is known about the underlying dynamics of chance encounters and how systems could utilize contextual data to mediate chance encounters. This dissertation addresses this gap in research literature by …

Reusing Ambient Light To Recognize Hand Gestures, Mahina-Diana A. Kaholokula May 2016

Reusing Ambient Light To Recognize Hand Gestures, Mahina-Diana A. Kaholokula

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

In this paper, we explore the feasibility of reusing ambient light to recognize human gestures. We present GestureLite, a system that provides hand gesture detection and classification using the pre-existing light in a room. We observe that in an environment with a reasonably consistent lighting scheme, a given gesture will block some light rays and leave others unobstructed, resulting in the user casting a unique shadow pattern for that movement. GestureLite captures these unique shadow patterns using a small array of light sensors. Using standard machine learning techniques, GestureLite can learn these patterns and recognize new instances of specific gestures …

Towards Practical Algorithm Based Fault Tolerance In Dense Linear Algebra, Panruo Wu, Qiang Guan, Nathan Debardeleben, Sean Blanchard, Dingwen Tao, Xin Liang, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Algorithm based fault tolerance (ABFT) attracts renewed interest for its extremely low overhead and good scalability. However the fault model used to design ABFT has been either abstract, simplistic, or both, leaving a gap between what occurs at the architecture level and what the algorithm expects. As the fault model is the deciding factor in choosing an effective checksum scheme, the resulting ABFT techniques have seen limited impact in practice. In this paper we seek to close the gap by directly using a comprehensive architectural fault model and devise a comprehensive ABFT scheme that can tolerate multiple architectural faults of …

New-Sum: A Novel Online Abft Scheme For General Iterative Methods, Dingwen Tao, Shuaiwen Leon Song, Sriram Krishnamoorthy, Panruo Wu, Xin Liang, Eddy Z. Zhang, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Emerging high-performance computing platforms, with large component counts and lower power margins, are anticipated to be more susceptible to soft errors in both logic circuits and memory subsystems. We present an online algorithm-based fault tolerance (ABFT) approach to efficiently detect and recover soft errors for general iterative methods. We design a novel checksum-based encoding scheme for matrix-vector multiplication that is resilient to both arithmetic and memory errors. Our design decouples the checksum updating process from the actual computation, and allows adaptive checksum overhead control. Building on this new encoding mechanism, we propose two online ABFT designs that can effectively recover …

Semi Supervised Weighted Maximum Variance Dimensionality Reduction, Pranitha Surya Andalam May 2016

Semi Supervised Weighted Maximum Variance Dimensionality Reduction, Pranitha Surya Andalam

Theses

In the recent years, we have huge amounts of data which we want to classify with minimal human intervention. Only few features from the data that is available might be useful in some scenarios. In those scenarios, the dimensionality reduction methods play a major role for extracting useful features. The two parameter weighted maximum variance (2P-WMV) is a generalized dimensionality reduction method of which principal component analysis (PCA) and maximum margin criterion (MMC) are special cases.. In this paper, we have extended the 2P-WMV approach from our previous work to a semi-supervised version. The objective of this work is specially …

The Contributions Of Anatol Rapoport To Game Theory, Erika Simpson May 2016

The Contributions Of Anatol Rapoport To Game Theory, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

Game theory is used to rationally and dispassionately examine the strategic behaviour of nations, especially superpower behaviour. This article explains how basic game theory - at its simplest level - was used by Anatol Rapoport to generate ideas about how to enhance world peace. Rapoport was at the forefront of the game theoreticians who sought to conceptualize strategies that could promote international cooperation. Accordingly, the basic logic of game theory is explained using the game models of ‘Chicken’ and ‘Prisoner’s Dilemma’. These models were used by Rapoport in his books and lectures in simple and complex ways. Then Rapoport’s revolutionary …
