Name List Only? Target Entity Disambiguation In Short Texts, Yixin Cao, Juanzi Li, Xiaofei Guo, Shuanhu Bai, Heng Ji, Jie Tang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Target entity disambiguation (TED), the task of identifying target entities of the same domain, has been recognized as a critical step in various important applications. In this paper, we propose a graphbased model called TremenRank to collectively identify target entities in short texts given a name list only. TremenRank propagates trust within the graph, allowing for an arbitrary number of target entities and texts using inverted index technology. Furthermore, we design a multi-layer directed graph to assign different trust levels to short texts for better performance. The experimental results demonstrate that our model outperforms state-of-the-art methods with an average gain …
Summarizing And Measuring Development Activity, Christoph Treude, Fernando Figueira Filho, Uirá Kulesza
Summarizing And Measuring Development Activity, Christoph Treude, Fernando Figueira Filho, Uirá Kulesza
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Software developers pursue a wide range of activities as part of their work, and making sense of what they did in a given time frame is far from trivial as evidenced by the large number of awareness and coordination tools that have been developed in recent years. To inform tool design for making sense of the information available about a developer’s activity, we conducted an empirical study with 156 GitHub users to investigate what information they would expect in a summary of development activity, how they would measure development activity, and what factors influence how such activity can be condensed …
Uedashboard: Awareness Of Unusual Events In Commit Histories, Larissa Leite, Christoph Treude, Fernando Figueira Filho
Uedashboard: Awareness Of Unusual Events In Commit Histories, Larissa Leite, Christoph Treude, Fernando Figueira Filho
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To be able to respond to source code modifications with large impact or commits that necessitate further examination, developers and managers in a software development team need to be aware of anything unusual happening in their software projects. To address this need, we introduce UEDashboard, a tool which automatically detects unusual events in a commit history based on metrics and smells, and surfaces them in an event feed. Our preliminary evaluation with a team of professional software developers showed that our conceptualization of unusual correlates with developers' perceptions of task difficulty, and that UEDashboard could be useful in supporting development …

Mining Biological Networks Towards Protein Complex Detection And Gene-Disease Association, Eileen Marie Hanna
Dissertations
Large amounts of biological data are continuously generated nowadays, thanks to the advancements of high-throughput experimental techniques. Mining valuable knowledge from such data still motivates the design of suitable computational methods, to complement the experimental work which is often bound by considerable time and cost requirements. Protein complexes or groups of interacting proteins, are key players in most cellular events. The identification of complexes not only allows to better understand normal biological processes but also to uncover Disease-triggering malfunctions. Ultimately, findings in this research branch can highly enhance the design of effective medical treatments. The aim of this research is …

Yinyang Bipolar Quantum Geometry And Bipolar Quantum Superposition Part I—A Background Independent Geometrical And Logical Exposition Of Dirac 3-Polarizer Experiment, Wen-Ran Zhang, Francesco Marchetti
Yinyang Bipolar Quantum Geometry And Bipolar Quantum Superposition Part I—A Background Independent Geometrical And Logical Exposition Of Dirac 3-Polarizer Experiment, Wen-Ran Zhang, Francesco Marchetti
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Bipolar quantum agent (BQA), bipolar quantum geometry (BQG) and bipolar dynamic logic (BDL) are introduced based on bipolar complementarity – a logical extension to Niels Bohr’s particle-wave YinYang duality principle. Complete geometrical background independence is proposed and BQG is proven completely background independent which leads to the notion of bipolar quantum superposition – an equilibrium-based logical approach to superposition. It is shown that the logical linearity of BDL can be unified with the physical nonlinearity of bipolar dynamic equilibrium. It is proven that a single polarized photon as a BQA can be logically channeled through the three polarizers in Dirac’s …

Yinyang Bipolar Quantum Geometry And Bipolar Quantum Superposition Part Ii—Toward An Equilibrium-Based Analytical Paradigm Of Quantum Mechanics And Quantum Biology, Wen-Ran Zhang, Francesco Marchetti
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
In Part I of this paper, YinYang bipolar quantum agent (BQA), bipolar quantum geometry (BQG) and 2-dimensional generic bipolar quantum superposition are introduced with a geometrical and logical exposition of Dirac 3-polarizer experiment. While the exposition qualifies BQG as a geometry of light, it is shown in this paper that the logical exposition can be extended to an analytical paradigm of quantum mechanics and quantum biology. It is shown that BQG as the geometry of light is also the geometry of Nature with a logical unification of matter and antimatter atoms into a bipolar quantum cellular automaton (BQCA) through multidimensional …
Modeling The Antipodal Connectivity Structure Of Neural Communities, Bayazit Karaman
Modeling The Antipodal Connectivity Structure Of Neural Communities, Bayazit Karaman
Theses and Dissertations
Positive electrical charges in a solid conductor generate an outward electrical field emanating from the charged conductor. In this context, overall cognitive decisions, which were initiated by the electrical activities of neural modules at different parts of the cerebrum, are completed at the highest spatial and hierarchical level. EEG systems are capable of detecting these electrical activities, however, a unified mathematical model of these highest-level cognitive interactions has not yet been stated. Recent studies support the theory that brain is composed of modules and certain nodes establish connections between the modules. Within the scope of this study, the highest spatial …
Harnessing The Transient Sound Waves From Space Repository For Source Identification, Onur Kececi
Harnessing The Transient Sound Waves From Space Repository For Source Identification, Onur Kececi
Theses and Dissertations
We believe that the sound waves originated from a given source have unique patterns that are damped down in time but maintain their inherent characteristics. These sound waves travel through the air and are echoed upon encountering a new (harder) surface. These waves are short lived and transitional in nature, and so far no successful attempt has been made to capture and analyze the aftermath of sound waves after their release. Considering the hypothesis principle of conservation of acoustic energy and uniqueness of sound signal patterns and echoes, and by employing some of the known techniques selectively, we designed an …

Fuzzy Logic-Based Guaranteed Lifetime Protocol For Real-Time Wireless Sensor Networks, Babar Shah, Farkhund Iqbal, Ali Abbas, Ki Il Kim
All Works
© 2015 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Few techniques for guaranteeing a network lifetime have been proposed despite its great impact on network management. Moreover, since the existing schemes are mostly dependent on the combination of disparate parameters, they do not provide additional services, such as real-time communications and balanced energy consumption among sensor nodes; thus, the adaptability problems remain unresolved among nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To solve these problems, we propose a novel fuzzy logic model to provide real-time communication in a guaranteed WSN lifetime. The proposed fuzzy logic controller accepts the input descriptors energy, …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Software metrics are a critical tool which provide continuous insight to products and processes and help build reliable software in mission critical environments. Using software metrics we can perform calculations that help assess the effectiveness of the underlying software or process. The two types of metrics relevant to our work is complexity metrics and in-process metrics. Complexity metrics tend to focus on intrinsic code properties like code complexity. In-process metrics focus on a higher-level view of software quality, measuring information that can provide insight into the underlying software development process.
Our aim is to develop and evaluate a metrics dashboard …
Large-Scale And High-Resolution 3-D Cave Mapping By Terrestrial Laser Scanning: A Case Study Of The Domica Cave, Slovakia, Michal Gallay, Ján Kaňuk, Zdenko Hochmuth, John D. Meneely, Jaroslav Hofierka, Vladimír Sedlák
Large-Scale And High-Resolution 3-D Cave Mapping By Terrestrial Laser Scanning: A Case Study Of The Domica Cave, Slovakia, Michal Gallay, Ján Kaňuk, Zdenko Hochmuth, John D. Meneely, Jaroslav Hofierka, Vladimír Sedlák
International Journal of Speleology
Mapping and modelling the complicated geometry of caves is a challenging task that has traditionally been undertaken by tacheometric surveying methods. These methods are excellent for capturing the general shape of a cave system but they are not suitable for high-speed, high-resolution mapping of complex surfaces found in this environment. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) technologies can acquire millions of points represented by 3-D coordinates, at very high spatial densities on complex multifaceted surfaces within minutes. In the last few years, advances in measurement speed, reduction in size / cost and increased portability of this technology has revolutionised the collection of …
Human Action Recognition In Multimedia Using Space-Time Approach, Salim Ganim Saeed Al-Ali
Human Action Recognition In Multimedia Using Space-Time Approach, Salim Ganim Saeed Al-Ali
Theses and Dissertations
Human Action Recognition in Multimedia, in the context of this dissertation work, is called Human Action Recognition in Videos (HARV). It is a system that used to identify human actions happened in testing videos based on some training video samples. In general, the HARV consists of three stages: human object tracking, feature extraction, and training or action classification. Primarily, the system is composed of two modes: first, the training mode in which the system learns about human actions from training video samples, second, the testing mode that allows this system to recognize unknown human actions in testing videos. In this …
A System To Support Clerical Review, Correction, And Confirmation Assertions In Entity Identity Information Management, Cheng Chen
Theses and Dissertations
Clerical review of Entity Resolution(ER) is crucial for maintaining the entity identity integrity of an Entity Identity Information Management (EIIM) system. However, the clerical review process presents several problems. These problems include Entity Identity Structures (EIS) that are difficult to read and interpret, excessive time and effort to review large Identity Knowledgebase (IKB), and the duplication of effort in repeatedly reviewing the same EIS in same EIIM review cycle or across multiple review cycles. Although the original EIIM model envisioned and demonstrated the value of correction assertions, these are applied to correct errors after they have been found. The original …
Api-Based Acquisition Of Evidence From Cloud Storage Providers, Andres E. Barreto
Api-Based Acquisition Of Evidence From Cloud Storage Providers, Andres E. Barreto
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Cloud computing and cloud storage services, in particular, pose a new challenge to digital forensic investigations. Currently, evidence acquisition for such services still follows the traditional approach of collecting artifacts on a client device. In this work, we show that such an approach not only requires upfront substantial investment in reverse engineering each service, but is also inherently incomplete as it misses prior versions of the artifacts, as well as cloud-only artifacts that do not have standard serialized representations on the client.
In this work, we introduce the concept of API-based evidence acquisition for cloud services, which addresses these concerns …
Creating Volatility Support For Freebsd, Elyse Bond
Creating Volatility Support For Freebsd, Elyse Bond
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Digital forensics is the investigation and recovery of data from digital hardware. The field has grown in recent years to include support for operating systems such as Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. However, little to no support has been provided for less well known systems such as the FreeBSD operating system.
The project presented in this paper focuses on creating the foundational support for FreeBSD via Volatility, a leading forensic tool in the digital forensic community. The kernel and source code for FreeBSD were studied to understand how to recover various data from analysis of a given system’s memory …
Concerns About Least Squares Estimation For The Three-Parameter Weibull Distribution: Case Study Of Statistical Software, William V. Harper, Thomas R. James
Concerns About Least Squares Estimation For The Three-Parameter Weibull Distribution: Case Study Of Statistical Software, William V. Harper, Thomas R. James
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
Least Squares estimation of the 2-parameter Weibull distribution is straightforward; however, there are multiple methods for least squares estimation of the 3-parameter Weibull. The third parameter for the 3-parameter Weibull distribution shifts the origin from 0 to some generally positive value sometimes called the location, threshold, or minimum life. The different methods used by the packages result in fairly major differences in the estimated parameters between the statistical packages. This may have implications for those needing to estimate or apply the results of a 3-parameter Weibull distribution that is used frequently in practice. The results are analyzed in detail based …
Evaluation Of Data-Path Topologies For Self-Timed Conditional Statements, Navaneeth Prasannakumar Jamadagni
Evaluation Of Data-Path Topologies For Self-Timed Conditional Statements, Navaneeth Prasannakumar Jamadagni
Dissertations and Theses
This research presents a methodology to evaluate data path topologies that implement a conditional statement for an average-case performance that is better than the worst-case performance. A conditional statement executes one of many alternatives depending on how Boolean conditions evaluate to true or false. Alternatives with simple computations take less time to execute. The self-timed designs can exploit the faster executing alternatives and provide an average-case behavior, where the average depends on the frequency of simple and complex computations, and the difference in the completion times of simple and complex computations. The frequency of simple and complex computations depends on …

Secure And Authenticated Data Communication In Wireless Sensor Networks, Omar Alfandi, Arne Bochem, Ansgar Kellner, Christian Göge, Dieter Hogrefe
All Works
© 2015 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Securing communications in wireless sensor networks is increasingly important as the diversity of applications increases. However, even today, it is equally important for the measures employed to be energy efficient. For this reason, this publication analyzes the suitability of various cryptographic primitives for use in WSNs according to various criteria and, finally, describes a modular, PKI-based framework for confidential, authenticated, secure communications in which most suitable primitives can be employed. Due to the limited capabilities of common WSN motes, criteria for the selection of primitives are security, power efficiency and memory …

Subgoals, Context, And Worked Examples In Learning Computing Problem Solving, Briana B. Morrison, Lauren E. Margulieux, Mark Guzdial
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Recent empirical results suggest that the instructional material used to teach computing may actually overload students' cognitive abilities. Better designed materials may enhance learning by reducing unnecessary load. Subgoal labels have been shown to be effective at reducing the cognitive load during problem solving in both mathematics and science. Until now, subgoal labels have been given to students to learn passively. We report on a study to determine if giving learners subgoal labels is more or less effective than asking learners to generate subgoal labels within an introductory CS programming task. The answers are mixed and depend on other features …
Tweakable Ciphers: Constructions And Applications, Robert Seth Terashima
Tweakable Ciphers: Constructions And Applications, Robert Seth Terashima
Dissertations and Theses
Tweakable ciphers are a building block used to construct a variety of cryptographic algorithms. Typically, one proves (via a reduction) that a tweakable-cipher-based algorithm is about as secure as the underlying tweakable cipher. Hence improving the security or performance of tweakable ciphers immediately provides corresponding benefits to the wide array of cryptographic algorithms that employ them. We introduce new tweakable ciphers, some of which have better security and others of which have better performance than previous designs. Moreover, we demonstrate that tweakable ciphers can be used directly (as opposed to as a building block) to provide authenticated encryption with associated …

Gpu/Cpu Performance Of Image Processing Tasks For Use In The Cam 2 System, Jonathan Cottom, Yung-Hsiang Lu, Young-Sol Koh
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Over the past several years, graphics processing units (GPU) have increasingly been viewed as the future of image processing engines. Currently, the Continuous Analysis of Many CAMeras (CAM2) project performs its processing on CPUs, which will potentially be more costly as the system scales to service more users. This study seeks to analyze the performance gains of GPU processing and evaluate the advantage of supporting GPU-accelerated analysis for CAM2 users. The platform for comparing the CPU and GPU performance has been the NVIDIA Jetson TK1. The target hardware implementation is an Amazon cloud instance, where final cost …

Web-Based Fragment Library, Junjie Wang, Lyudmila Slipchenko
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
A new polarized force field BioEFP for modeling process in biology is far superior in accuracy to the common classical force fields. One of the main shortcomings of BioEFP is that the parameters are not readily available, thus it will take a lot of time to be calculated.
Developing an online repository of pre-computed fragment parameters and a similarity algorithm will allow ascribing each fragment of a biological macromolecule to a pre-defined fragment.
This study incorporates three parts to create the online repository. First, the visual design for the website using the Hypertext Markup Language and the Cascading Style Sheets …

Implementation Of A Speech Recognition Algorithm To Facilitate Verbal Commands For Visual Analytics Law Enforcement Toolkit, Shubham S. Rastogi, David L. Wiszowaty, Hanye Xu, Abish Malik, David S. Ebert
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The VALET (Visual Analytics Law Enforcement Toolkit) system allows the user to visualize and predict crime hotspots and analyze crime data. Police officers have difficulty in using VALET in a mobile situation, since the system allows only conventional input interfaces (keyboard and mouse). This research focuses on introducing a new input interface to VALET in the form of speech recognition, which allows the user to interact with the software without losing functionality. First an Application Program Interface (API) that was compatible with the VALET system was found and initial code scripts to test its functionality were written. Next, the code …
Classification And Visualization Of Crime-Related Tweets, Ransen Niu, Jiawei Zhang, David S. Ebert
Classification And Visualization Of Crime-Related Tweets, Ransen Niu, Jiawei Zhang, David S. Ebert
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Millions of Twitter posts per day can provide an insight to law enforcement officials for improved situational awareness. In this paper, we propose a natural-language-processing (NLP) pipeline towards classification and visualization of crime-related tweets. The work is divided into two parts. First, we collect crime-related tweets by classification. Unlike written text, social media like Twitter includes substantial non-standard tokens or semantics. So we focus on exploring the underlying semantic features of crime-related tweets, including parts-of-speech properties and intention verbs. Then we use these features to train a classification model via Support Vector Machine. The second part is to utilize visual …
Spontaneous Synchrony On Graphs And The Emergence Of Order From Disorder, Dylan Linville, Daniel Trugillo Martins Fontes
Spontaneous Synchrony On Graphs And The Emergence Of Order From Disorder, Dylan Linville, Daniel Trugillo Martins Fontes
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Research Publications
From pulsars to pedestrians and bacteria to brain cells, objects that exhibit cyclical behavior, called oscillators, are found in a variety of different settings. When oscillators adjust their behavior in response to nearby oscillators, they often achieve a state of synchrony, in which they all have the same phase and frequency. Here, we explore the Kuramoto model, a simple and general model which describes oscillators as dynamical systems on a graph and has been used to study synchronization in systems ranging from firefly swarms to the power grid. We discuss analytical and numerical methods used to investigate the governing system …
Scalable Equivalence Checking For Behavioral Synthesis, Zhenkun Yang
Scalable Equivalence Checking For Behavioral Synthesis, Zhenkun Yang
Dissertations and Theses
Behavioral synthesis is the process of compiling an Electronic System Level (ESL) design to a register-transfer level (RTL) implementation. ESL specifications define the design functionality at a high level of abstraction (e.g., with C/C++ or SystemC), and thus provide a promising approach to address the exacting demands to develop feature-rich, optimized, and complex hardware systems within aggressive time-to-market schedules. Behavioral synthesis entails application of complex and error-prone transformations during the compilation process. Therefore, the adoption of behavioral synthesis highly depends on our ability to ensure that the synthesized RTL conforms to the ESL description. This dissertation provides an end-to-end scalable …

Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), a standardized lossy compression scheme for digital audio, which was designed to be the successor of the MP3 format, generally achieves better sound quality than MP3 at similar bit rates. While AAC is also the default or standard audio format for many devices and AAC audio files may be presented as important digital evidences, the authentication of the audio files is highly needed but relatively missing. In this paper, we propose a scheme to expose tampered AAC audio streams that are encoded at the same encoding bit-rate. Specifically, we design a shift-recompression based method to retrieve …
