Potential Biases In Bug Localization: Do They Matter?, Pavneet Singh Kochhar, Yuan Tian, David Lo
Potential Biases In Bug Localization: Do They Matter?, Pavneet Singh Kochhar, Yuan Tian, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Issue tracking systems are valuable resources during software maintenance activities and contain information about the issues faced during the development of a project as well as after its release. Many projects receive many reports of bugs and it is challenging for developers to manually debug and fix them. To mitigate this problem, past studies have proposed information retrieval (IR)-based bug localization techniques, which takes as input a textual description of a bug stored in an issue tracking system, and returns a list of potentially buggy source code files. These studies often evaluate their effectiveness on issue reports marked as bugs …
To What Extent Could We Detect Field Defects? An Extended Empirical Study Of False Negatives In Static Bug Finding Tools, Ferdian Thung, Lucia Lucia, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Foyzur Rahman, Premkumar Devanbu
To What Extent Could We Detect Field Defects? An Extended Empirical Study Of False Negatives In Static Bug Finding Tools, Ferdian Thung, Lucia Lucia, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Foyzur Rahman, Premkumar Devanbu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Software defects can cause much loss. Static bug-finding tools are designed to detect and remove software defects and believed to be effective. However, do such tools in fact help prevent actual defects that occur in the field and reported by users? If these tools had been used, would they have detected these field defects, and generated warnings that would direct programmers to fix them? To answer these questions, we perform an empirical study that investigates the effectiveness of five state-of-the-art static bug-finding tools (FindBugs, JLint, PMD, CheckStyle, and JCSC) on hundreds of reported and fixed defects extracted from three open …

Online Probabilistic Learning For Fuzzy Inference System, Richard Jayadi Oentaryo, Meng Joo Er, San Linn, Xiang Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Online learning is a key methodology for expert systems to gracefully cope with dynamic environments. In the context of neuro-fuzzy systems, research efforts have been directed toward developing online learning methods that can update both system structure and parameters on the fly. However, the current online learning approaches often rely on heuristic methods that lack a formal statistical basis and exhibit limited scalability in the face of large data stream. In light of these issues, we develop a new Sequential Probabilistic Learning for Adaptive Fuzzy Inference System (SPLAFIS) that synergizes the Bayesian Adaptive Resonance Theory (BART) and Rule-Wise Decoupled Extended …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Use cases, as the primary techniques in the user requirement analysis, have been widely adopted in the requirement engineering practice. As developed early, use cases also serve as the basis for function requirement development, system design and testing. Errors in the use cases could potentially lead to problems in the system design or implementation. It is thus highly desirable to detect errors in use cases. Automatically analyzing use case documents is challenging primarily because they are written in natural languages. In this work, we aim to achieve automatic defect detection in use case documents by leveraging on advanced parsing techniques. …

Exploring Variety Seeking Behavior In Mobile Users, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Robert J. Kauffman, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Understanding the personality traits and current attitudes of individual consumers is crucial for retailers and mobile advertisers. In this paper, we investigate the phenomenon of “variety seeking tendencies" in mobile users in their (1) online (represented by their App usage behavior), and (2) physical (represented by their location visits) worlds. We show that different categories of users exhibit different levels of variety. Further, by analyzing at various time scales, we show that there exists correlation between when a person is likely to visit new places in the real world and when he/she is likely to explore new Apps in the …
Press: A Novel Framework Of Trajectory Compression In Road Networks, Renchu Song, Weiwei Sun, Baihua Zheng, Yu Zheng
Press: A Novel Framework Of Trajectory Compression In Road Networks, Renchu Song, Weiwei Sun, Baihua Zheng, Yu Zheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Location data becomes more and more important. In this paper, we focus on the trajectory data, and propose a new framework, namely PRESS (Paralleled Road-Network-Based Trajectory Compression), to effectively compress trajectory data under road network constraints. Different from existing work, PRESS proposes a novel representation for trajectories to separate the spatial representation of a trajectory from the temporal representation, and proposes a Hybrid Spatial Compression (HSC) algorithm and error Bounded Temporal Compression (BTC) algorithm to compress the spatial and temporal information of trajectories respectively. PRESS also supports common spatial-temporal queries without fully decompressing the data. Through an extensive experimental study …

Clear: A Real-Time Online Observatory For Bursty And Viral Events, Runquan Xie, Feida Zhu, Hui Ma, Wei Xie, Chen Lin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We describe our demonstration of CLEar (Clairaudient Ear), a real-time online platform for detecting, monitoring, summarizing, contextualizing and visualizing bursty and viral events, those triggering a sudden surge of public interest and going viral on micro-blogging platforms. This task is challenging for existing methods as they either use complicated topic models to analyze topics in a off-line manner or define temporal structure of fixed granularity on the data stream for online topic learning, leaving them hardly scalable for real-time stream like that of Twitter. In this demonstration of CLEar, we present a three-stage system: First, we show …

Interestingness-Driven Diffussion Process Summarization In Dynamic Networks, Qiang Qu, Siyuan Liu, Christian Jensen, Feida Zhu, Christos Faloutsos
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The widespread use of social networks enables the rapid diffusion of information, e.g., news, among users in very large communities. It is a substantial challenge to be able to observe and understand such diffusion processes, which may be modeled as networks that are both large and dynamic. A key tool in this regard is data summarization. However, few existing studies aim to summarize graphs/networks for dynamics. Dynamic networks raise new challenges not found in static settings, including time sensitivity and the needs for online interestingness evaluation and summary traceability, which render existing techniques inapplicable. We study the topic of dynamic …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Interpersonal touch is our most primitive social language strongly governing our emotional well-being. Despite the positive implications of touch in many facets of our daily social interactions, we find wide-spread caution and taboo limiting touch-based interactions in workplace relationships that constitute a significant part of our daily social life. In this paper, we explore new opportunities for ubicomp technology to promote a new meme of casual and cheerful interpersonal touch such as high-fives towards facilitating vibrant workplace culture. Specifically, we propose High5, a mobile service with a smartwatch-style system to promote high-fives in everyday workplace interactions. We first present initial …

Mobile instant messengers serve as major interaction media for everyday chats. Contrary to the belief that a message is seen only by a designated receiver, it can be accidentally exposed to someone nearby and could result in embarrassing moments, for example, when the receiver is viewing pictures together with his friend upon the message arrival. To understand the significance of the problem and core factors that cause such embarrassments, we collected 961 in-situ responses from 14 participants upon the actual message arrival and analyzed them from the perspective of the receiver's situation. The results showed that 29% of message arrivals …
Saliency Detection With Flash And No-Flash Image Pairs, Shengfeng He, Rynson W.H. Lau
Saliency Detection With Flash And No-Flash Image Pairs, Shengfeng He, Rynson W.H. Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose a new saliency detection method using a pair of flash and no-flash images. Our approach is inspired by two observations. First, only the foreground objects are significantly brightened by the flash as they are relatively nearer to the camera than the background. Second, the brightness variations introduced by the flash provide hints to surface orientation changes. Accordingly, the first observation is explored to form the background prior to eliminate background distraction. The second observation provides a new orientation cue to compute surface orientation contrast. These photometric cues from the two observations are independent of visual …

Efficient Hidden Vector Encryption With Constant-Size Ciphertext, Tran Viet Xuan Phuong, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A Hidden Vector Encryption (HVE) scheme is a special type of anonymous identity-based encryption (IBE) scheme where the attribute string associated with the ciphertext or the user secret key can contain wildcards. In this paper, we introduce two constant-size ciphertext-policy hidden vector encryption (CP-HVE) schemes. Our first scheme is constructed on composite order bilinear groups, while the second one is built on prime order bilinear groups. Both schemes are proven secure in a selective security model which captures plaintext (or payload) and attribute hiding. To the best of our knowledge, our schemes are the first HVE constructions that can achieve …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Associating faces appearing in Web videos with names presented in the surrounding context is an important task in many applications. However, the problem is not well investigated particularly under large-scale realistic scenario, mainly due to the scarcity of dataset constructed in such circumstance. In this paper, we introduce a Web video dataset of celebrities, named WebV-Cele, for name-face association. The dataset consists of 75 073 Internet videos of over 4 000 hours, covering 2 427 celebrities and 649 001 faces. This is, to our knowledge, the most comprehensive dataset for this problem. We describe the details of dataset construction, discuss …

Linking Lightweight And Heavyweight Systems Analysis By Converting Service Responsibility Tables Into Uml Diagrams, X. Tan, S. Alter, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Heavyweight systems analysis approaches such as the use of Unified Modeling Language (UML) are inappropriate for business professionals who nonetheless need to participate actively in systems analysis and design processes to ensure that the system requirements reflect their needs. This paper proposes the use of a lightweight analysis approach based on Service Responsibility Tables (SRTs) to serve as a front-end to UML diagrams. Business professionals (with or without the help of IT professionals) can use this lightweight approach to specify at least part of system requirements. Subsequently, IT professionals can perform heavyweight analysis for the design and implementation of hardware …

Crossroad is among the most dangerous parts outside for the visually impaired people. Numerous studies have exploited navigating systems for the visually impaired community, providing services ranging from block detection, route planning to realtime localization. However, none of them have addressed the safety issue in crossroad and integrated three key factors necessary for a practical crossroad navigation system: detecting the crossroad, locating zebra patterns, and guiding the user within zebra crossing when passing the road. Our CrossNavi application responds to these needs, providing an integrated crossroad navigation service that incorporates all the essential functionalities mentioned above. The overall service is …
New Directions For Remote Data Integrity Checking Of Cloud Storage, Bo Chen
New Directions For Remote Data Integrity Checking Of Cloud Storage, Bo Chen
Dissertations
Cloud storage services allow data owners to outsource their data, and thus reduce their workload and cost in data storage and management. However, most data owners today are still reluctant to outsource their data to the cloud storage providers (CSP), simply because they do not trust the CSPs, and have no confidence that the CSPs will secure their valuable data. This dissertation focuses on Remote Data Checking (RDC), a collection of protocols which can allow a client (data owner) to check the integrity of data outsourced at an untrusted server, and thus to audit whether the server fulfills its contractual …
Intent-Based User Segmentation With Query Enhancement, Wei Xiong
Intent-Based User Segmentation With Query Enhancement, Wei Xiong
Dissertations
With the rapid advancement of the internet, accurate prediction of user's online intent underlying their search queries has received increasing attention from the online advertising community. As a rich source of information on web user's behavior, query logs have been leveraged by advertising companies to deliver personalized advertisements. However, a typical query usually contains very few terms, which only carry a small amount of information about a user's interest. The tendency of users to use short and ambiguous queries makes it difficult to fully describe and distinguish a user's intent. In addition, the query feature space is sparse, as only …

Improving The Selection Of Surrogates During The Cold-Start Phase Of A Cyber Foraging Application To Increase Application Performance, Brian Kowalczk
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Mobile devices are generally less powerful and more resource constrained than their desktop counterparts are, yet many of the applications that are of the most value to users of mobile devices are resource intensive and difficult to support on a mobile device. Applications such as games, video playback, image processing, voice recognition, and facial recognition are resource intensive and often exceed the limits of mobile devices.
Cyber foraging is an approach that allows a mobile device to discover and utilize surrogate devices present in the local environment to augment the capabilities of the mobile device. Cyber foraging has been shown …
Dynamic Pricing In Heterogeneous Wireless Cellular Networks, David Shrader
Dynamic Pricing In Heterogeneous Wireless Cellular Networks, David Shrader
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Smart communications devices are giving users instant access to applications that consume large amounts of data. These applications have different requirements on the network for delivery of data. In order to support these different applications, operators are required to support multiple service classes.
Given the regulatory and technology constraints and the relatively high cost associated with wireless spectrum licensing and utilization, demand will exceed supply leading to congestion and overload conditions. In addition to new broadband radio technologies offering higher data rates, operators are looking at deploying alternate heterogeneous technologies, such as WLAN, to provide additional bandwidth for serving customers. …
Comparison Of Optimization Techniques In Large Scale Transportation Problems, Tapojit Kumar
Comparison Of Optimization Techniques In Large Scale Transportation Problems, Tapojit Kumar
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
The Transportation Problem is a classic Operations Research problem where the objective is to determine the schedule for transporting goods from source to destination in a way that minimizes the shipping cost while satisfying supply and demand constraints. Although it can be solved as a Linear Programming problem, other methods exist. Linear Programming makes use of the Simplex Method, an algorithm invented to solve a linear program by progressing from one extreme point of the feasible polyhedron to an adjacent one. The algorithm contains tactics like pricing and pivoting. For a Transportation Problem, a simplified version of the regular Simplex …
Comparison Of Sequence Alignment Algorithms, Tejas Gandhi
Comparison Of Sequence Alignment Algorithms, Tejas Gandhi
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
The fact that biological sequences can be represented as strings belonging to a finite alphabet (A, C, G, and T for DNA) plays an important role in connecting biology to computer science. String representation allows researchers to apply various string comparison techniques available in computer science. As a result, various applications have been developed that facilitate the task of sequence alignment. The problem of finding sequence alignments consists of finding the best match between two biological sequences. A best match can infer an evolutionary relationship and functional similarity. However, there is a lack of research on how reliable and efficient …
Wireless Location Determination: Using Existing 802.11 Wireless Networks To Determine A Users Location, Travis Calvert
Wireless Location Determination: Using Existing 802.11 Wireless Networks To Determine A Users Location, Travis Calvert
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
The ability to determine a user’s location through an existing 802.11 wireless network has vast implications in the area of context-aware and pervasive computing. Such abilities have been developed mainly in the Linux environment to date. To maximize its usefulness, a location determination system was developed for the more dominant Windows operation system. While being able to operate outdoors as well as indoors, this system succeeds where traditional GPS (Global Positioning Systems) fail, namely indoor environments. This system could benefit the large number of existing wireless networks and requires no additional hardware; only a few simple software downloads. The ability …

Towards A Lightweight Approach For Modding Serious Educational Games: Assisting Novice Designers, Jacob Dahleen, Alex Hunsberger, Ryan Weber, Dennis Brylow, C. Shaun Longstreet, Kendra M. L. Cooper
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Serious educational games (SEGs) are a growing segment of the education community’s pedagogical toolbox. Effectively creating such games remains challenging, as teachers and industry trainers are content experts; typically they are not game designers with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience needed to create a quality SEG. Here, a lightweight approach to interactively explore and modify existing SEGs is introduced, a toll that can be broadly adopted by educators for pedagogically sound SEGs. Novice game designers can rapidly explore the educational and traditional elements of a game, with a stress on tracking the SEG learning objectives, as well as allowing …

Implementation Of A Segmented, Transactional Database Caching System, Benjamin J. Sandmann
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Research on algorithms and concepts regarding memory-based data caching can help solve the performance bottleneck in current Database Management Systems. Problems such as data concurrency, persistent storage, and transaction management have limited most memory cache’s capabilities. It has also been tough to develop a proper user- oriented and business friendly way of implementing such a system. The research of this project focused on code implementation, abstract methodologies and how to best prepare such an application for common business usage.
A Cognitive Apprenticeship Approach For Teaching Abstract And Complex Skills In An Online Learning Environment, Reinaldo Fernandez
A Cognitive Apprenticeship Approach For Teaching Abstract And Complex Skills In An Online Learning Environment, Reinaldo Fernandez
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Undergraduate courses such as mathematics, science, and computer programming require high levels of decision making, concentration, and cognitive demand. Researchers in the field of instructional design are interested in effective instructional strategies that can aid practitioners in teaching such abstract and complex skills.
One example of an instructional strategy that has proven effective in teaching these skills is cognitive apprenticeship (CA). While CA has been applied to courses such as mathematics and computer programming in face-to-face and blended learning environments, there is little evidence of the advantages of applying CA in a fully online computer programming course. Specifically, the introductory …
Using Gist Features To Constrain Search In Object Detection, Joanna Browne Solmon
Using Gist Features To Constrain Search In Object Detection, Joanna Browne Solmon
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis investigates the application of GIST features [13] to the problem of object detection in images. Object detection refers to locating instances of a given object category in an image. It is contrasted with object recognition, which simply decides whether an image contains an object, regardless of the object's location in the image.
In much of computer vision literature, object detection uses a "sliding window" approach to finding objects in an image. This requires moving various sizes of windows across an image and running a trained classifier on the visual features of each window. This brute force method can …

In 2007, Microsoft released a new version of MS Office that changed the file platform to a universal data format called Extensible Markup Language or XML. XML is meant to be simple, meaningful, and understood by all computer programs. Since Microsoft has moved its file format to XML, tremendous extendibility can be built by software professionals to link MS Office 2007 documents to data not held within the saved documents. This project tested the levels of interactive data between MS Word 2007 and several other XML data sources.
