Stochastic Optimal Design For Unknown Linear Discrete-Time System Zero-Sum Games In Input-Output Form Under Communication Constraints, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan, F. L. Lewis Sep 2014

Stochastic Optimal Design For Unknown Linear Discrete-Time System Zero-Sum Games In Input-Output Form Under Communication Constraints, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan, F. L. Lewis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, stochastic optimal strategy for unknown linear discrete-time system quadratic zero-sum games in input-output form with communication imperfections such as network-induced delays and packet losses, otherwise referred to as networked control system (NCS) zero-sum games, relating to the H∞ optimal control problem is solved in a forward-in-time manner. First, the linear discrete-time zero sum state space representation is transformed into a linear NCS in the state space form after incorporating random delays and packet losses and then into the input-output form. Subsequently, the stochastic optimal approach, referred to as adaptive dynamic programming (ADP), is introduced which estimates the …

An Assessment Of Single-Channel Emg Sensing For Gestural Input, Travis Peters Sep 2014

An Assessment Of Single-Channel Emg Sensing For Gestural Input, Travis Peters

Computer Science Technical Reports

Wearable devices of all kinds are becoming increasingly popular. One problem that plagues wearable devices, however, is how to interact with them. In this paper we construct a prototype electromyography (EMG) sensing device that captures a single channel of EMG sensor data corresponding to user gestures. We also implement a machine learning pipeline to recognize gestural input received via our prototype sensing device. Our goal is to assess the feasibility of using a BITalino EMG sensor to recognize gestural input on a mobile health (mHealth) wearable device known as Amulet. We conduct three experiments in which we use the EMG …

Seeing Human Weight From A Single Rgb-D Image, Tam Nguyen, Jiashi Feng, Shuicheng Yan Sep 2014

Seeing Human Weight From A Single Rgb-D Image, Tam Nguyen, Jiashi Feng, Shuicheng Yan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Human weight estimation is useful in a variety of potential applications, e.g., targeted advertisement, entertainment scenarios and forensic science. However, estimating weight only from color cues is particularly challenging since these cues are quite sensitive to lighting and imaging conditions. In this article, we propose a novel weight estimator based on a single RGB-D image, which utilizes the visual color cues and depth information. Our main contributions are three-fold.

First, we construct the W8-RGBD dataset including RGB-D images of different people with ground truth weight.

Second, the novel sideview shape feature and the feature fusion model are proposed to facilitate …

Capacity Planning With Financial And Operational Hedging In Low‐Cost Countries, Lijian Chen, Shanling Li, Letian Wang Sep 2014

Capacity Planning With Financial And Operational Hedging In Low‐Cost Countries, Lijian Chen, Shanling Li, Letian Wang

MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications

The authors of this paper outline a capacity planning problem in which a risk-averse firm reserves capacities with potential suppliers that are located in multiple low-cost countries. While demand is uncertain, the firm also faces multi-country foreign currency exposures. This study develops a mean-variance model that maximizes the firm’s optimal utility and derives optimal utility and optimal decisions in capacity and financial hedging size. The authors show that when demand and exchange rate risks are perfectly correlated, a risk- averse firm, by using financial hedging, will achieve the same optimal utility as a risk-neutral firm. In this paper as well, …

Safe Zero-Cost Coercions For Haskell, Joachim Breitner, Richard A. Eisenberg, Simon Peyton Jones, Stephanie Weirich Sep 2014

Safe Zero-Cost Coercions For Haskell, Joachim Breitner, Richard A. Eisenberg, Simon Peyton Jones, Stephanie Weirich

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

Generative type abstractions – present in Haskell, OCaml, and other languages – are useful concepts to help prevent programmer errors. They serve to create new types that are distinct at compile time but share a run-time representation with some base type. We present a new mechanism that allows for zero-cost conversions between generative type abstractions and their representations, even when such types are deeply nested. We prove type safety in the presence of these conversions and have implemented our work in GHC.

A Crowdsourcing Approach To Identify Common Method Bias And Self-Representation, Margeret A. Hall, Simon Caton Sep 2014

A Crowdsourcing Approach To Identify Common Method Bias And Self-Representation, Margeret A. Hall, Simon Caton

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Pertinent questions on the measurement of social indicators are: the verification of data gained online (e.g., controlling for self-representation on social networks), and appropriate uses in community management and policy-making. Across platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and blogging services, users (sub)consciously represent themselves in a way which is appropriate for their intended audience (Qui et al., 2012; Zhao et al., 2008). However, scholars in the social sciences and computer science have not yet adequately addressed controlling for self-representation, or the propensity to display or censor oneself, in their analyses (Zhao et al., 2008; Das and Kramer, 2013). As such researchers …

Strong-Disorder Magnetic Quantum Phase Transitions: Status And New Developments, Thomas Vojta Sep 2014

Strong-Disorder Magnetic Quantum Phase Transitions: Status And New Developments, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article reviews the unconventional effects of random disorder on magnetic quantum phase transitions, focusing on a number of new experimental and theoretical developments during the last three years. On the theory side, we address smeared quantum phase transitions tuned by changing the chemical composition, for example in alloys of the type A1-xBx. We also discuss how the interplay of order parameter conservation and overdamped dynamics leads to enhanced quantum Griffiths singularities in disordered metallic ferromagnets. Finally, we discuss a semiclassical theory of transport properties in quantum Griffiths phases. Experimental examples include the ruthenates Sr1-x …

Trust, Betrayal, And Whistle-Blowing: Reflections On The Edward Snowden Case, Herman T. Tavani, Frances Grodzinsky Sep 2014

Trust, Betrayal, And Whistle-Blowing: Reflections On The Edward Snowden Case, Herman T. Tavani, Frances Grodzinsky

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

Is every act of whistle blowing, by definition, a betrayal of trust on the part of the whistle-blower? If so, are employees who blow the whistle, by implication, untrustworthy employees? Assuming that they are, would employees who blow the whistle (presumably on the grounds of moral obligation) also be willing to concede that they are not trustworthy employees, by virtue of carrying out their whistle-blowing act(s)? In answering these questions, we first propose some working definitions of whistle-blowing, trust, and trustworthiness. We then ask whether some instances of whistle-blowing are morally permissible (and perhaps also morally required), even if it …

Adapting Monte Carlo Localization To Utilize Floor And Wall Texture Data, Stephanie Krapil Sep 2014

Adapting Monte Carlo Localization To Utilize Floor And Wall Texture Data, Stephanie Krapil

Master's Theses

Monte Carlo Localization (MCL) is an algorithm that allows a robot to determine its location when provided a map of its surroundings. Particles, consisting of a location and an orientation, represent possible positions where the robot could be on the map. The probability of the robot being at each particle is calculated based on sensor input.

Traditionally, MCL only utilizes the position of objects for localization. This thesis explores using wall and floor surface textures to help the algorithm determine locations more accurately. Wall textures are captured by using a laser range finder to detect patterns in the surface. Floor …

Towards Rigorously Faking Bidirectional Model Transformations, Christopher M. Poskitt, Mike Dodds, Richard F. Paige, Arend Rensink Sep 2014

Towards Rigorously Faking Bidirectional Model Transformations, Christopher M. Poskitt, Mike Dodds, Richard F. Paige, Arend Rensink

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bidirectional model transformations (bx) are mechanisms for automatically restoring consistency between multiple concurrently modified models. They are, however, challenging to implement; many model transformation languages not supporting them at all. In this paper, we propose an approach for automatically obtaining the consistency guarantees of bx without the complexities of a bx language. First, we show how to "fake" true bidirectionality using pairs of unidirectional transformations and inter-model consistency constraints in Epsilon. Then, we propose to automatically verify that these transformations are consistency preserving – thus indistinguishable from true bx – by defining translations to graph rewrite rules and nested conditions, …

Characterizations Of A Class Of Distributions By Dual Generalized Order Statistics And Truncated Moments, Filippo Domma, Gholamhossein Hamedani Sep 2014

Characterizations Of A Class Of Distributions By Dual Generalized Order Statistics And Truncated Moments, Filippo Domma, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The problem of characterizing a distribution is an important problem which has recently attracted the attention of many researchers. Thus, various characterizations have been established in many different directions. The present work deals with the characterizations of a general class of distributions. These characterizations are based on: (i) a simple relationship between two truncated moments, (ii) truncated moment of certain functions of the nth order statistic, (iii) single truncated moment of certain functions of the random variable and (iv) moments of dual generalized order statistics. We like to mention that the characterization (i) which is expressed in terms of the ratio …

Pharyngeal And Cervical Cancer Incidences Significantly Correlate With Personal Uv Doses Among Whites In The United States, Dianne E. Godar, Rong Tang, Stephen Merrill Sep 2014

Pharyngeal And Cervical Cancer Incidences Significantly Correlate With Personal Uv Doses Among Whites In The United States, Dianne E. Godar, Rong Tang, Stephen Merrill

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Because we found UV-exposed oral tissue cells have reduced DNA repair and apoptotic cell death compared with skin tissue cells, we asked if a correlation existed between personal UV dose and the incidences of oral and pharyngeal cancer in the United States. We analyzed the International Agency for Research on Cancer's incidence data for oral and pharyngeal cancers by race (white and black) and sex using each state's average annual personal UV dose. We refer to our data as ‘white’ rather than ‘Caucasian,’ which is a specific subgroup of whites, and ‘black’ rather than African-American because blacks from other countries …

Intelligent Indexing: A Semi-Automated, Trainable System For Field Labeling, Robert T. Clawson Sep 2014

Intelligent Indexing: A Semi-Automated, Trainable System For Field Labeling, Robert T. Clawson

Theses and Dissertations

We present Intelligent Indexing: a general, scalable, collaborative approach to indexing and transcription of non-machine-readable documents that exploits visual consensus and group labeling while harnessing human recognition and domain expertise. In our system, indexers work directly on the page, and with minimal context switching can navigate the page, enter labels, and interact with the recognition engine. Interaction with the recognition engine occurs through preview windows that allow the indexer to quickly verify and correct recommendations. This interaction is far superior to conventional, tedious, inefficient post-correction and editing. Intelligent Indexing is a trainable system that improves over time and can provide …

Phaser: Enabling Phased Array Signal Processing On Commodity Wifi Access Points, Jon Gjengset, Jie Xiong, Graeme Mcphilips, Kyle Jamieson Sep 2014

Phaser: Enabling Phased Array Signal Processing On Commodity Wifi Access Points, Jon Gjengset, Jie Xiong, Graeme Mcphilips, Kyle Jamieson

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Signal processing on antenna arrays has received much recent attention in the mobile and wireless networking research communities, with array signal processing approaches addressing the problems of human movement detection, indoor mobile device localization, and wireless network security. However, there are two important challenges inherent in the design of these systems that must be overcome if they are to be of practical use on commodity hardware. First, phase differences between the radio oscillators behind each antenna can make readings unusable, and so must be corrected in order for most techniques to yield high-fidelity results. Second, while the number of antennas …

Across-Speaker Articulatory Normalization For Speaker-Independent Silent Speech Recognition, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan Green Sep 2014

Across-Speaker Articulatory Normalization For Speaker-Independent Silent Speech Recognition, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan Green

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Silent speech interfaces (SSIs), which recognize speech from articulatory information (i.e., without using audio information), have the potential to enable persons with laryngectomy or a neurological disease to produce synthesized speech with a natural sounding voice using their tongue and lips. Current approaches to SSIs have largely relied on speaker-dependent recognition models to minimize the negative effects of talker variation on recognition accuracy. Speaker-independent approaches are needed to reduce the large amount of training data required from each user; only limited articulatory samples are often available for persons with moderate to severe speech impairments, due to the logistic difficulty of …

Sharing Political News: The Balancing Act Of Intimacy And Socialization In Selective Exposure, Jisun An, Daniele Quercia, Meeyoung Cha, Krishna Gummadi, Jon Crowcroft Sep 2014

Sharing Political News: The Balancing Act Of Intimacy And Socialization In Selective Exposure, Jisun An, Daniele Quercia, Meeyoung Cha, Krishna Gummadi, Jon Crowcroft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One might think that, compared to traditional media, social media sites allow people to choose more freely what to read and what to share, especially for politically oriented news. However, reading and sharing habits originate from deeply ingrained behaviors that might be hard to change. To test the extent to which this is true, we propose a Political News Sharing (PoNS) model that holistically captures four key aspects of social psychology: gratification, selective exposure, socialization, and trust & intimacy. Using real instances of political news sharing in Twitter, we study the predictive power of these features. As one might expect, …

Epaminondas: Exploring Combat Tactics, David W. King, Gilbert L. Peterson Sep 2014

Epaminondas: Exploring Combat Tactics, David W. King, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Epaminondas is a two-person, zero-sum strategy game that combines long-term strategic play with highly tactical move sequences. The game has two unique features that make it stand out from other games. The first feature is the creation of phalanxes, which are groups of pieces that can move as a whole unit. As the number of pieces in a phalanx increases, the mobility and capturing power of the phalanx also increases. The second feature differs from many other strategy games: when a player makes a crossing, a winning move in the game, the second player has an opportunity to respond. This …

A Method To Develop Neck Injury Criteria To Aid Design And Test Of Escape Systems Incorporating Helmet Mounted Displays, Jeffrey C. Parr Sep 2014

A Method To Develop Neck Injury Criteria To Aid Design And Test Of Escape Systems Incorporating Helmet Mounted Displays, Jeffrey C. Parr

Theses and Dissertations

HMDs are becoming common human-machine interface equipment in manned military flight, but introducing this equipment into the overall aircraft escape system poses new and significant system design, development, and test concerns. Although HMDs add capabilities, which improve operator performance, the increased capability is often accompanied by increased head supported mass. The increased mass can amplify the risk of pilot neck injury during ejection when compared to lighter legacy helmets. Currently no adequate USAF neck injury criteria exist to effectively guide the requirements, design, and test of escape systems for pilots with HMDs. This research effort presents a novel method to …

Verifiable Computation On Outsourced Encrypted Data, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Hwee Hwa Pang, Jian Weng Sep 2014

Verifiable Computation On Outsourced Encrypted Data, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Hwee Hwa Pang, Jian Weng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

On one hand, homomorphic encryption allows a cloud server to perform computation on outsourced encrypted data but provides no verifiability that the computation is correct. On the other hand, homomorphic authenticator, such as homomorphic signature with public verifiability and homomorphic MAC with private verifiability, guarantees authenticity of computation over outsourced data but does not provide data confidentiality. Since cloud servers are usually operated by third-party providers which are almost certain to be outside the trust domain of cloud users, neither homomorphic encryption nor homomorphic authenticator suffices for verifiable computation on outsourced encrypted data in the cloud. In this paper, we …

Control Flow Obfuscation Using Neural Network To Fight Concolic Testing, Haoyu Ma, Xinjie Ma, Weijie Liu, Zhipeng Huang, Debin Gao, Chunfu Jia Sep 2014

Control Flow Obfuscation Using Neural Network To Fight Concolic Testing, Haoyu Ma, Xinjie Ma, Weijie Liu, Zhipeng Huang, Debin Gao, Chunfu Jia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Concolic testing is widely regarded as the state-of-the-art technique in dynamic discovering and analyzing trigger-based behavior in software programs. It uses symbolic execution and an automatic theorem prover to generate new concrete test cases to maximize code coverage for scenarios like software verification and malware analysis. While malicious developers usually try their best to hide malicious executions, there are also circumstances in which legitimate reasons are presented for a program to conceal trigger-based conditions and the corresponding behavior, which leads to the demand of control flow obfuscation techniques. We propose a novel control flow obfuscation design based on the incomprehensibility …

Graph Matching By Simplified Convex-Concave Relaxation Procedure, Zhiyong Liu, Hong Qiao, Xu Yang, Steven C. H. Hoi Sep 2014

Graph Matching By Simplified Convex-Concave Relaxation Procedure, Zhiyong Liu, Hong Qiao, Xu Yang, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The convex and concave relaxation procedure (CCRP) was recently proposed and exhibited state-of-the-art performance on the graph matching problem. However, CCRP involves explicitly both convex and concave relaxations which typically are difficult to find, and thus greatly limit its practical applications. In this paper we propose a simplified CCRP scheme, which can be proved to realize exactly CCRP, but with a much simpler formulation without needing the concave relaxation in an explicit way, thus significantly simplifying the process of developing CCRP algorithms. The simplified CCRP can be generally applied to any optimizations over the partial permutation matrix, as long as …

A Study Of Age Gaps Between Online Friends, Lizi Liao, Jing Jiang, Ee Peng Lim, Heyan Huang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User attribute extraction on social media has gain considerable attention, while existing methods are mostly supervised which suffer great diffi- culty in insufficient gold standard data. In this paper, we validate a strong hypothesis based on homophily and adapt it to ensure the certainty of user attribute we extracted via weakly supervised propagation. Homophily, the theory which states that people who are similar tend to become friends, has been well studied in the setting of online social networks. When we focus on age attribute, based on this theory, online friends tend to have similar age. In this work, we take …

Dupfinder: Integrated Tool Support For Duplicate Bug Report Detection, Ferdian Thung, Pavneet Singh Kochhar, David Lo Sep 2014

Dupfinder: Integrated Tool Support For Duplicate Bug Report Detection, Ferdian Thung, Pavneet Singh Kochhar, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To track bugs that appear in a software, developers often make use of a bug tracking system. Users can report bugs that they encounter in such a system. Bug reporting is inherently an uncoordinated distributed process though and thus when a user submits a new bug report, there might be cases when another bug report describing exactly the same problem is already present in the system. Such bug reports are duplicate of each other and these duplicate bug reports need to be identified. A number of past studies have proposed a number of automated approaches to detect duplicate bug reports. …

Privatedroid: Private Browsing Mode For Android, Su Mon Kywe, Christopher Landis, Yutong Pei, Justin Satterfield, Yuan Tian, Patrick Tague Sep 2014

Privatedroid: Private Browsing Mode For Android, Su Mon Kywe, Christopher Landis, Yutong Pei, Justin Satterfield, Yuan Tian, Patrick Tague

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Private browsing mode is a privacy feature adopted by many modern computer browsers. With the increased use of mobile devices and escalating privacy concerns for mobile users, browser applications on mobile devices have also started incorporating private browsing mode. Even so, the use of private browsing mode is limited to the browser applications and cannot be applied directly on other third-party mobile applications. In this paper, we propose PrivateDroid, which provides a private browsing mode for third-party applications on the Android platform. First, we discuss three possible approaches of implementing mobile private browsing mode: code instrumentation, an extra sandbox, and …

Active Code Search: Incorporating User Feedback To Improve Code Search Relevance, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang Sep 2014

Active Code Search: Incorporating User Feedback To Improve Code Search Relevance, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Code search techniques return relevant code fragments given a user query. They typically work in a passive mode: given a user query, a static list of code fragments sorted by the relevance scores decided by a code search technique is returned to the user. A user will go through the sorted list of returned code fragments from top to bottom. As the user checks each code fragment one by one, he or she will naturally form an opinion about the true relevance of the code fragment. In an active model, those opinions will be taken as feedbacks to the search …

Efficient Data Compression With Error Bound Guarantee In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Abu Alsheikh, P. K. Poh, S. Lin, Hwee-Pink Tan, D. Niyato

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a data compression and dimensionality reduction scheme for data fusion and aggregation applications to prevent data congestion and reduce energy consumption at network connecting points such as cluster heads and gateways. Our in-network approach can be easily tuned to analyze the data temporal or spatial correlation using an unsupervised neural network scheme, namely the autoencoders. In particular, our algorithm extracts intrinsic data features from previously collected historical samples to transform the raw data into a low dimensional representation. Moreover, the proposed framework provides an error bound guarantee mechanism. We evaluate the proposed solution using real-world data sets and …

Authorized Keyword Search On Encrypted Data, Jie Shi, Junzuo Lai, Yingjiu Li, Huijie Robert Deng, Jian Weng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud computing has drawn much attention from research and industry in recent years. Plenty of enterprises and individuals are outsourcing their data to cloud servers. As those data may contain sensitive information, it should be encrypted before outsourced to cloud servers. In order to ensure that only authorized users can search and further access the encrypted data, two important capabilities must be supported: keyword search and access control. Recently, rigorous efforts have been made on either keyword search or access control over encrypted data. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no encryption scheme supporting both capabilities in …
