Fresh: Fair And Efficient Slot Configuration And Scheduling For Hadoop Clusters, Jiayin Wang, Yi Yao, Ying Mao, Bo Sheng, Ningfang Mi

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Hadoop is an emerging framework for parallel big data processing. While becoming popular, Hadoop is too complex for regular users to fully understand all the system parameters and tune them appropriately. Especially when processing a batch of jobs, default Hadoop setting may cause inefficient resource utilization and unnecessarily prolong the execution time. This paper considers an extremely important setting of slot configuration which by default is fixed and static. We proposed an enhanced Hadoop system called FRESH which can derive the best slot setting, dynamically configure slots, and appropriately assign tasks to the available slots. The experimental results show that …

A Partner-Matching Framework For Social Activity Communities, Chunyu Ai, Wei Zhong, Mingyuan Yan, Feng Gu

Publications and Research

A lot of daily activities require more than one person to participate and collaborate with each other; however, for many people, it is not easy to find good partners to engage in activities with one another. With the rapid growth of social network applications, more and more people get used to creating connections with people on the social network. Therefore, designing social network framework for partner-matching is significant in helping people to easily find good partners. In this paper, we proposed a framework which can match partners for an active community. In order to improve the matching performance, all users …

Big Data In Healthcare: What Is It Used For?, Rebecca Hermon, Patricia A H Williams

Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference

Big data analytics is a growth area with the potential to provide useful insight in healthcare. Whilst many dimensions of big data still present issues in its use and adoption, such as managing the volume, variety, velocity, veracity, and value, the accuracy, integrity, and semantic interpretation are of greater concern in clinical application. However, such challenges have not deterred the use and exploration of big data as an evidence source in healthcare. This drives the need to investigate healthcare information to control and reduce the burgeoning cost of healthcare, as well as to seek evidence to improve patient outcomes. Whilst …

Managing Wireless Security Risks In Medical Services, Brian Cusack, Akar Kyaw

Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference

Medical systems are designed for a range of end users from different professional skill groups and people who carry the devices in and on their bodies. Open, accurate, and efficient communication is the priority for medical systems and consequently strong protection costs are traded against the utility benefits for open systems. In this paper we assess the vulnerabilities created by the professional and end user expectations, and theorise ways to mitigate wireless security vulnerabilities. The benefits of wireless medical services are great in terms of efficiencies, mobility, and information management. These benefits may be realised by treating the vulnerabilities and …

Parweb: A Front-End Interface For Cluster Computing., Jacob Potter

Honors Theses

The High Performance Computational Science Laboratory at Western Michigan University operates a cluster of systems for use by students, professors, and professional researchers. Currently users that want to access the cluster, known as “Thor”, require knowledge of the Unix/Linux command line. They also require knowledge of operating a piece of software known as TORQUE to correctly achieve results from the High Performance Computing Lab.

The Web User Interface Framework for High Performance Cluster Computing alleviates the need for intimate knowledge of a command line interface, and replaces the current interaction interface with a more user friendly and graphical oriented system. …

Promoting Functions To Type Families In Haskell, Richard A. Eisenberg, Jan Stolarek Dec 2014

Promoting Functions To Type Families In Haskell, Richard A. Eisenberg, Jan Stolarek

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

Haskell, as implemented in the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC), is enriched with many extensions that support type-level programming, such as promoted datatypes, kind polymorphism, and type families. Yet, the expressiveness of the type-level language remains limited. It is missing many features present at the term level, including case expressions, anonymous functions, partially-applied functions, and letexpressions. In this paper, we present an algorithm - with a proof of correctness - to encode these term-level constructs at the type level. Our approach is automated and capable of promoting a wide array of functions to type families. We also highlight and discuss …

Applying Gmdh-Type Neural Network And Particle Warm Optimization For Prediction Of Liquefaction Induced Lateral Displacements, Reza A. Jirdehi, Hamidreza T. Mamoudan, Hossein H. Sarkaleh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Lateral spreading and flow failure are amongst the most destructive effects of liquefaction. Estimation of the peril of lateral spreading requires characterization of subsurface conditions, principally soil density, fine content, groundwater conditions, site topography and seismic characteristics. In this paper a GMDH-type neural network and particle swarm optimization is developed for prediction of liquefaction induced lateral displacements. Using this method, a new model was proposed that is suitable for predicting the liquefaction induced lateral displacements. The proposed model was tested before the requested calculation. The data set which is contains 250 data points of liquefaction-induced lateral ground spreading case histories …

Facilitating Natural Conversational Agent Interactions: Lessons From A Deception Experiment, Ryan M. Schuetzler, Mark Grimes, Justin Scott Giboney, Joesph Buckman

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

This study reports the results of a laboratory experiment exploring interactions between humans and a conversational agent. Using the ChatScript language, we created a chat bot that asked participants to describe a series of images. The two objectives of this study were (1) to analyze the impact of dynamic responses on participants’ perceptions of the conversational agent, and (2) to explore behavioral changes in interactions with the chat bot (i.e. response latency and pauses) when participants engaged in deception. We discovered that a chat bot that provides adaptive responses based on the participant’s input dramatically increases the perceived humanness and …

Efficient Integrity Verification Of Replicated Data In Cloud Using Homomorphic Encryption, Raghul Mukundan, Sanjay Madria, Mark Linderman Dec 2014

Efficient Integrity Verification Of Replicated Data In Cloud Using Homomorphic Encryption, Raghul Mukundan, Sanjay Madria, Mark Linderman

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The cloud computing is an emerging model in which computing infrastructure resources are provided as a service over the internet. Data owners can outsource their data by remotely storing them in the cloud and enjoy on-demand high quality services from a shared pool of configurable computing resources. However, since data owners and the cloud servers are not in the same trusted domain, the outsourced data may be at risk as the cloud server may no longer be fully trusted. Therefore, data confidentiality, availability and integrity are of critical importance in such a scenario. The data owner encrypts data before storing …

Flow Dynamics Of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, C. J. Van Der Veen, L. A. Stearns, Jesse Johnson, B. Csatho Dec 2014

Flow Dynamics Of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, C. J. Van Der Veen, L. A. Stearns, Jesse Johnson, B. Csatho

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Force-balance calculations on Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, reveal large spatial variations in the along-flow component of driving stress with corresponding sticky spots that are stationary over time. On the large scale, flow resistance is partitioned between basal (80%) and lateral (20%) drag. Ice flow is due mostly to basal sliding and concentrated vertical shear in the basal ice layers, indicating the bed is at or close to the pressure-melting temperature. There is a significant component of driving stress in the across-flow direction resulting in nonzero basal drag in that direction. This is an unrealistic result and we propose that there …

Scientific Application Acceleration Utilizing Heterogeneous Architectures, Edwin Weill

All Theses

Within the past decade, there have been substantial leaps in computer architectures to exploit the parallelism that is inherently present in many applications. The scientific community has benefited from the emergence of not only multi-core processors, but also other, less traditional architectures including general purpose graphical processing units (GPGPUs), field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and Intel's many integrated cores (MICs) architecture (i.e. Xeon Phi). The popularity of the GPGPU has increased rapidly because of their ability to perform massive amounts of parallel computation quickly and at low cost with an ease of programmability. Also, with the addition of high-level programming …

Qmethod: A Package To Explore Human Perspectives Using Q Methodology, Aiora Zabala Dec 2014

Qmethod: A Package To Explore Human Perspectives Using Q Methodology, Aiora Zabala

The R Journal

Q is a methodology to explore the distinct subjective perspectives that exist within a group. It is used increasingly across disciplines. The methodology is semi-qualitative and the data are analysed using data reduction methods to discern the existing patterns of thought. This package is the first to perform Q analysis in R, and it provides many advantages to the existing software: namely, it is fully cross-platform, the algorithms can be transparently examined, it provides results in a clearly structured and tabulated form ready for further exploration and modelling, it produces a graphical summary of the results, and it generates a …

Farewell's Linear Increments Model For Missing Data: The Flim Package, Rune Hoff, Jon Michael Gran, Daniel Farewell Dec 2014

Farewell's Linear Increments Model For Missing Data: The Flim Package, Rune Hoff, Jon Michael Gran, Daniel Farewell

The R Journal

Missing data is common in longitudinal studies. We present a package for Farewell’s Linear Increments Model for Missing Data (the FLIM package), which can be used to fit linear models for observed increments of longitudinal processes and impute missing data. The method is valid for data with regular observation patterns. The end result is a list of fitted models and a hypothetical complete dataset corresponding to the data we might have observed had individuals not been missing. The FLIM package may also be applied to longitudinal studies for causal analysis, by considering counterfactual data as missing data- for instance to …

Smr: An R Package For Computing The Externally Studentized Normal Midrange Distribution, Ben Dêivide, Oliveira Batista, Daniel Furtado Ferreira

The R Journal

The main purpose of this paper is to present the main algorithms underlining the con struction and implementation of the SMR package, whose aim is to compute studentized normal midrange distribution. Details on the externally studentized normal midrange and standardized normal midrange distributions are also given. The package follows the same structure as the prob ability functions implemented in R. That is: the probability density function (dSMR), the cumulative distribution function (pSMR), the quantile function (qSMR) and the random number generating function (rSMR). Pseudocode and illustrative examples of how to use the package are presented.

Sgof: An R Package For Multiple Testing Problems, Irene Castro-Conde, Jacob De Uña-Álvarez Dec 2014

Sgof: An R Package For Multiple Testing Problems, Irene Castro-Conde, Jacob De Uña-Álvarez

The R Journal

In this paper we present a new R package called sgof for multiple hypothesis testing. The principal aim of this package is to implement SGoF-type multiple testing methods, known to be more powerful than the classical false discovery rate (FDR) and family-wise error rate (FWER) based methods in certain situations, particularly when the number of tests is large. This package includes Bi nomial and Conservative SGoF and the Bayesian and Beta-Binomial SGoF multiple testing procedures, which are adaptations of the original SGoF method to the Bayesian setting and to possibly correlated tests, respectively. The sgof package also implements the Benjamini-Hochberg …

Flexible R Functions For Processing Accelerometer Data, With Emphasis On Nhanes 2003–2006, Dane R. Van Domelen, W. Stephen Pittard

The R Journal

Accelerometers are a valuable tool for measuring physical activity (PA) in epidemiological studies. However, considerable processing is needed to convert time-series accelerometer data into meaningful variables for statistical analysis. This article describes two recently developed R packages for processing accelerometer data. The package accelerometry contains functions for performing various data processing procedures, such as identifying periods of non-wear time and bouts of activity. The functions are flexible, computationally efficient, and compatible with uniaxial or triaxial data. The package nhanesaccel is specifically for processing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), years 2003–2006. Its primary function generates measures …

Automatic Conversion Of Tables To Longform Dataframes, Jimmy Oh Dec 2014

Automatic Conversion Of Tables To Longform Dataframes, Jimmy Oh

The R Journal

TableToLongForm automatically converts hierarchical Tables intended for a human reader into a simple LongForm dataframe that is machine readable, making it easier to access and use the data for analysis. It does this by recognising positional cues present in the hierarchical Table (which would normally be interpreted visually by the human brain) to decompose, then reconstruct the data into a LongForm dataframe. The article motivates the benefit of such a conversion with an example Table, followed by a short user manual, which includes a comparison between the simple one argument call to TableToLongForm, with code for an equivalent manual conversion. …

Gset: An R Package For Exact Sequential Test Of Equivalence Hypothesis Based On Bivariate Non-Central T-Statistics, Fang Liu Dec 2014

Gset: An R Package For Exact Sequential Test Of Equivalence Hypothesis Based On Bivariate Non-Central T-Statistics, Fang Liu

The R Journal

The R package gset calculates equivalence and futility boundaries based on the exact bivariate non-central t test statistics. It is the first R package that targets specifically at the group sequential test of equivalence hypotheses. The exact test approach adopted by gset neither assumes the large-sample normality of the test statistics nor ignores the contribution to the overall Type I error rate from rejecting one out of the two one-sided hypotheses under a null value. The features of gset include: error spending functions, computation of equivalence boundaries and futility boundaries, either binding or nonbinding, depiction of stagewise boundary plots, and …
