As production of data is exponentially growing with a drastically lower cost, the importance of data mining required to extract and discover valuable information is becoming more paramount. To be functional in any business or industry, data must be capable of supporting sound decision-making and plausible prediction. The purpose of this paper is concisely but broadly to provide a synopsis of the technology and theory of data mining, providing an enhanced comprehension of the methods by which massive data can be transferred into meaningful information.
Major Challenges And Solutions For Utilizing Big Data In The Maritime Industry, Sadaharu Koga
Major Challenges And Solutions For Utilizing Big Data In The Maritime Industry, Sadaharu Koga
World Maritime University Dissertations
The dissertation is a study of big data for the use in the maritime industry. Today’s society is information-intensive. The term “big data” is becoming more common. In fact, some maritime companies and institutions have already been trying to utilize big data for enhancing maritime safety and environmental protection. In order to promote this trend, the dissertation tries to identify common and important challenges for the whole maritime industry in terms of the utilization of big data and propose corresponding solutions. First, by reviewing the definitions of big data, three major features are identified. Big data takes electronic form, is …
Modeling Properties Of Deformation Pattern, Yuan Lin
Modeling Properties Of Deformation Pattern, Yuan Lin
Theses and Dissertations
The human aging process is a complicated topic in the biological sciences. It is human nature to want to keep looking young and interested in one's appearance many years into the future. Some fundamental questions related to this issue are, "How fast are we aging?" Is it a continuous process or is it a process of phases? What will I possibly look like after ten years? To provide an answer to all of these questions, it is necessary to closely monitor the changes taking places in our anatomy. Wrinkles and human face shape deformation, which are the natural signs of …
Characterizing Fetal Sleep States Of Iugr And Low-Risk Fetuses Using Fetal Magnetocardiography, Bhargavi Sriram
Characterizing Fetal Sleep States Of Iugr And Low-Risk Fetuses Using Fetal Magnetocardiography, Bhargavi Sriram
Theses and Dissertations
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a fetal condition characterized by growth-rate reduction. Afflicted fetuses tend to display abnormalities in heart rate. Hence, studying its heart rate variability (HRV) along with comparisons against normal fetal HRV might give some insight into the heart rate dynamics between the two groups. Heart rate variability (HRV) is one of the prominent markers that could help in identifying fetal distress. Four fetal heart rate patterns were previously defined based on HRV, which can provide clinicians with valuable information regarding fetus health during pregnancy. Past studies that differentiate the HRV with or without considering patterns, have …
Optimizing Data Movement In Hybrid Analytic Systems, Patrick Michael Leyshock
Optimizing Data Movement In Hybrid Analytic Systems, Patrick Michael Leyshock
Dissertations and Theses
Hybrid systems for analyzing big data integrate an analytic tool and a dedicated data-management platform, storing data and operating on the data at both components. While hybrid systems have benefits over alternative architectures, in order to be effective, data movement between the two hybrid components must be minimized. Extant hybrid systems either fail to address performance problems stemming from inter-component data movement, or else require the user to explicitly reason about and manage data movement. My work presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a hybrid analytic system for array-structured data that automatically minimizes data movement between the hybrid components. …
Synthesis Of Irreversible Incompletely Specified Multi-Output Functions To Reversible Eosops Circuits With Pse Gates, Robert Adrian Fiszer
Synthesis Of Irreversible Incompletely Specified Multi-Output Functions To Reversible Eosops Circuits With Pse Gates, Robert Adrian Fiszer
Dissertations and Theses
As quantum computers edge closer to viability, it becomes necessary to create logic synthesis and minimization algorithms that take into account the particular aspects of quantum computers that differentiate them from classical computers. Since quantum computers can be functionally described as reversible computers with superposition and entanglement, both advances in reversible synthesis and increased utilization of superposition and entanglement in quantum algorithms will increase the power of quantum computing.
One necessary component of any practical quantum computer is the computation of irreversible functions. However, very little work has been done on algorithms that synthesize and minimize irreversible functions into a …
Financial Ratio Analysis For Stock Price Movement Prediction Using Hybrid Clustering, Tom Tupe
Financial Ratio Analysis For Stock Price Movement Prediction Using Hybrid Clustering, Tom Tupe
Master's Projects
We have gathered over 3100 annual financial reports for 500 companies listed on the S&P 500 index, where the main goal was to select and give proper weights to the various pieces of quantitative data to maximize clustering results and improve prediction results over previous work by [Lin et al. 2011]. Various financial ratios, including earnings per share surprise percentages were gathered and analyzed. We proposed and used two types, correlation based ratios and causality based ratios. An extension to the classification scheme used by [Lin et al. 2011] was proposed to more accurately classify financial reports, together with a …
A Hash-Cash Based Music Streaming Payment System, Timothy Chen
A Hash-Cash Based Music Streaming Payment System, Timothy Chen
Master's Projects
This project develops a hash-cash based, streaming music payment system. In our system, musicians are paid based on how long their works are listened to. Artists can upload their works to our proof-of-concept service so that people can discover and listen to them. While their works are being listened to, a mining process is run in parallel. The mining process discovers a “listening coin” based on the hash-cash algorithm. Users of our service would pay a monthly fee to access the music library. The monthly fees are then distributed to all artists proportionate to the number of virtual coins they …
A Gis-Centric Approach For Modeling Vessel Management Behavior System Data To Determine Oyster Vessel Behavior On Public Oyster Grounds In Louisiana, David X. Gallegos
A Gis-Centric Approach For Modeling Vessel Management Behavior System Data To Determine Oyster Vessel Behavior On Public Oyster Grounds In Louisiana, David X. Gallegos
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The satellite communications system called the Vessel Management System was used to provide geospatial data on oyster fishing over the nearly 1.7 million acres of the public water bottoms in Louisiana. An algorithm to analyze the data was developed in order to model vessel behaviors including docked, gearing, fishing and traveling. Vessel speeds were calculated via the Haversine formula at small and large intervals and compared to derive a measure of linearity. The algorithm was implemented into software using Python and inserted into a PostgreSQL database supporting geospatial information. Queries were developed to obtain reports on vessel activities and daily …
An Empirical Study Of Semantic Similarity In Wordnet And Word2vec, Abram Handler
An Empirical Study Of Semantic Similarity In Wordnet And Word2vec, Abram Handler
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis performs an empirical analysis of Word2Vec by comparing its output to WordNet, a well-known, human-curated lexical database. It finds that Word2Vec tends to uncover more of certain types of semantic relations than others -- with Word2Vec returning more hypernyms, synonomyns and hyponyms than hyponyms or holonyms. It also shows the probability that neighbors separated by a given cosine distance in Word2Vec are semantically related in WordNet. This result both adds to our understanding of the still-unknown Word2Vec and helps to benchmark new semantic tools built from word vectors.
Masquerade Detection Using Singular Value Decomposition, Sweta Vikram Shah
Masquerade Detection Using Singular Value Decomposition, Sweta Vikram Shah
Master's Projects
Information systems and networks are highly susceptible to attacks in the form of intrusions. One such attack is by the masqueraders who impersonate legitimate users. Masqueraders can be detected in anomaly based intrusion detection by identifying the abnormalities in user behavior. This user behavior is logged in log files of different types. In our research we use the score based technique of Singular Value Decomposition to address the problem of masquerade detection on a unix based system. We have data collected in the form of sequential unix commands ran by 50 users. SVD is a linear algebraic technique, which has …
Spartan Web Application Firewall, Brian C. Lee
Spartan Web Application Firewall, Brian C. Lee
Master's Projects
Computer security is an ongoing issue and attacks are growing more sophisit- cated. One category of attack utilizes cross-site scripting (XSS) to extract confiden- tial data such as a user’s login credential’s without the knowledge of either the user nor the web server by utilizing vulnerabilities on web pages and internet browsers. Many people develop their own web applications without learning about or having good coding practices or security in mind. Web application firewalls are able to help but can be enhanced to be more effective than they currently are at detecting re- flected XSS attacks by analyzing the request …

A Content-Sensitive Wiki Help System, Eswara Satya Pavan Rajesh Pinapala
Master's Projects
Context-sensitive help is a software application component that enables users to open help pertaining to their state, location, or the action they are performing within the software. Context-sensitive “wiki” help, on the other hand, is help powered by a wiki system with all the features of context-sensitive help. A context-sensitive wiki help system aims to make the context-sensitive help collaborative; in addition to seeking help, users can directly contribute to the help system. I have implemented a context-sensitive wiki help system into Yioop, an open source search engine and software portal created by Dr. Chris Pollett, in order to measure …
Dynamics Of Propagation Of Premature Impulses In Structurally Remodeled Infarcted Myocardium: A Computational Analysis, Candido Cabo
Dynamics Of Propagation Of Premature Impulses In Structurally Remodeled Infarcted Myocardium: A Computational Analysis, Candido Cabo
Publications and Research
Initiation of cardiac arrhythmias typically follows one or more premature impulses either occurring spontaneously or applied externally. In this study, we characterize the dynamics of propagation of single (S2) and double premature impulses (S3), and the mechanisms of block of premature impulses at structural heterogeneities caused by remodeling of gap junctional conductance (Gj) in infarcted myocardium. Using a sub-cellular computer model of infarcted tissue, we found that |INa,max|, prematurity (coupling interval with the previous impulse), and conduction velocity (CV) of premature impulses change dynamically as they propagate away from the site of initiation. There are fundamental differences between the dynamics …
The Nax Language: Unifying Functional Programming And Logical Reasoning In A Language Based On Mendler-Style Recursion Schemes And Term-Indexed Types, Ki Yung Ahn
Dissertations and Theses
Two major applications of lambda calculi in computer science are functional programming languages and mechanized reasoning systems (or, proof assistants). According to the Curry--Howard correspondence, it is possible, in principle, to design a unified language based on a typed lambda calculus for both logical reasoning and programming. However, the different requirements of programming languages and reasoning systems make it difficult to design such a unified language that provides both. Programming languages usually extend lambda calculi with programming-friendly features (e.g., recursive datatypes, general recursion) for supporting the flexibility to model various computations, while sacrificing logical consistency. Logical reasoning systems usually extend …
Kaczmarz Iterative Projection And Nonuniform Sampling With Complexity Estimates, Tim Wallace, Ali Safak Sekmen
Kaczmarz Iterative Projection And Nonuniform Sampling With Complexity Estimates, Tim Wallace, Ali Safak Sekmen
Computer Science Faculty Research
Kaczmarz’s alternating projection method has been widely used for solving mostly over-determined linear system of equations Ax = b in various fields of engineering, medical imaging, and computational science. Because of its simple iterative nature with light computation, this method was successfully applied in computerized tomography. Since tomography generates a matrix A with highly coherent rows, randomized Kaczmarz algorithm is expected to provide faster convergence as it picks a row for each iteration at random, based on a certain probability distribution. Since Kaczmarz’s method is a subspace projection method, the convergence rate for simple Kaczmarz algorithm was developed in …
The Effects Of Gamifying Optional Lessons On Motivation, Aaron Zemach
The Effects Of Gamifying Optional Lessons On Motivation, Aaron Zemach
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Adding video-game elements to non-video-game interfaces (“gamification”) has become a common engagement strategy over the past several years in the domain of education. While prior studies have found that adding game elements to mandatory educational materials can increase students’ motivation to complete the materials, there has yet to be a study to investigate if game elements can make users more likely to engage with optional educational materials. In this study, we investigate whether users of a gamified educational interface are more motivated than users of a non-gamified interface to voluntarily complete educational materials. We found users of a gamified interface …

Stochastic Adaptive Event-Triggered Control And Network Scheduling Protocol Co-Design For Distributed Networked Systems, Hao Xu, Avimanyu Sahoo, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In a distributed 'networked control system' (NCS), multiple physical systems or agents are connected to their corresponding controllers through a shared packet-switched communication network. For such distributed NCS, periodic sampled controller design is unsuitable to handle packet-switched closed-loop control systems, and a novel stochastic optimal adaptive event-sampled controller scheme is proposed in the application layer for each physical system or agent expressed as an uncertain linear dynamic system. Lyapunov stability analysis will be utilized to derive the event trigger condition. In addition, a network scheduling protocol is also required for such NCS. Traditional network scheduling protocols are unsuitable for such …
Online Learning On Incremental Distance Metric For Person Re-Identification, Yuke Sun, Hong Liu, Qianru Sun
Online Learning On Incremental Distance Metric For Person Re-Identification, Yuke Sun, Hong Liu, Qianru Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Person re-identification is to match persons appearing across non-overlapping cameras. The matching is challenging due to visual ambiguities and disparities of human bodies. Most previous distance metrics are learned by off-line and supervised approaches. However, they are not practical in real-world applications in which online data comes in without any label. In this paper, a novel online learning approach on incremental distance metric, OL-IDM, is proposed. The approach firstly modifies Self-Organizing Incremental Neural Network (SOINN) using Mahalanobis distance metric to cluster incoming data into neural nodes. Such metric maximizes the likelihood of a true image pair matches with a smaller …
Human Action Classification Based On Sequential Bag-Of-Words Model, Hong Liu, Qiaoduo Zhang, Qianru Sun
Human Action Classification Based On Sequential Bag-Of-Words Model, Hong Liu, Qiaoduo Zhang, Qianru Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recently, approaches utilizing spatial-temporal features have achieved great success in human action classification. However, they typically rely on bag-of-words (BoWs) model, and ignore the spatial and temporal structure information of visual words, bringing ambiguities among similar actions. In this paper, we present a novel approach called sequential BoWs for efficient human action classification. It captures temporal sequential structure by segmenting the entire action into sub-actions. Each sub-action has a tiny movement within a narrow range of action. Then the sequential BoWs are created, in which each sub-action is assigned with a certain weight and salience to highlight the distinguishing sections. …
Data Visualization For Network Simulations, Luiz Felipe Perrone, Greg L. Shrock, Christopher S. Main
Data Visualization For Network Simulations, Luiz Felipe Perrone, Greg L. Shrock, Christopher S. Main
Faculty Journal Articles
As many other kinds of simulation experiments, simulations of computer networks tend to generate high volumes of output data. While the collection and the statistical processing of these data are challenges in and of themselves, creating meaningful visualizations from them is as much an art as it is a science. A sophisticated body of knowledge in information design and data visualization has been developed and continues to evolve. However, many of the visualizations created by the network simulation community tend to be less than optimal at creating compelling, informative narratives from experimental output data. The primary contribution of this paper …
Perspectives On Languages For Specifying Simulation Experiments, Luiz Felipe Perrone, Johannes Schützel, Danhua Peng, Adelinde Urhmacher
Perspectives On Languages For Specifying Simulation Experiments, Luiz Felipe Perrone, Johannes Schützel, Danhua Peng, Adelinde Urhmacher
Faculty Journal Articles
While domain specific languages are well established for describing the system of interest in modeling and simulation, the last years have seen increasingly domain specific languages also exploited for specifying experiments. This development, whose application areas range from computational biology to network simulation, is motivated by the desire to facilitate the reproducibility of simulation results. Thereby, the experimentation process is treated as a first class object of simulation studies. As the experimentation process contains different tasks such as configuration, observation, analysis, and evaluation, domain-specific languages can be exploited to specify experiments as well as individual sub-tasks or even the goal …

The Potentials And Challenges Of Big Data In Public Health, Rena N. Vithiatharan
Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference
The potential to use big data sources for public health increases with the broadening availability of data and improved methods of analysis. Whilst there are some well-known examples of the opportunistic use of big data, such as GoogleFlu, public health has not yet realised the full potential of such data sources. A literature review was undertaken to identify the potential of such data collections to impact public health, and to identify what challenges are currently limiting this potential. The potential include improved real-time analysis, research and development and genome studies. However, challenges listed are poor universal standardisation and classification, privacy …

The use of personal devices in the work environment has crossed the boundaries of work and socially related tasks. With cyber criminals seriously targeting healthcare for medical identity theft, the lack of control of new technologies within healthcare networks becomes an increasing vulnerability. The prolific adoption of personal mobile devices in the healthcare environment requires a proactive approach to the management of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). This paper analysed the current state of the problem and the challenges that this creates in an environment that has stringent privacy and security requirements. The discourse demonstrates that the issue is not …
