Distributed Owl El Reasoning: The Story So Far, Raghava Mutharaju, Pascal Hitzler, Prabhaker Mateti Oct 2014

Distributed Owl El Reasoning: The Story So Far, Raghava Mutharaju, Pascal Hitzler, Prabhaker Mateti

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Automated generation of axioms from streaming data, such as traffic and text, can result in very large ontologies that single machine reasoners cannot handle. Reasoning with large ontologies requires distributed solutions. Scalable reasoning techniques for RDFS, OWL Horst and OWL 2 RL now exist. For OWL 2 EL, several distributed reasoning approaches have been tried, but are all perceived to be inefficient. We analyze this perception. We analyze completion rule based distributed approaches, using different characteristics, such as dependency among the rules, implementation optimizations, how axioms and rules are distributed. We also present a distributed queue approach for the classification …

Self-Organizing The Space Of Vocal Imitations, Davide Rocchesso, Davide Andrea Mauro Phd Oct 2014

Self-Organizing The Space Of Vocal Imitations, Davide Rocchesso, Davide Andrea Mauro Phd

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

The human voice is a powerful instrument for producing sound sketches. The sonic space that can be spanned with the voice is vast and complex and, therefore, it is difficult to organize and explore. In this contribution, we report on our attempts at extracting the principal components from a database of 152 short excerpts of vocal imitations. We describe each excerpt by a set of statistical audio features and by a measure of similarity of the envelope to a small number of prototype envelopes. We apply k-means clustering on a space whose dimensionality has been reduced by singular value decomposition, …

Understanding Intelligent Systems, Tamara Kneese Oct 2014

Understanding Intelligent Systems, Tamara Kneese

Media Studies

Science fiction has long imagined a workforce reshaped by robots, but the increasingly common instantiation of intelligent systems in business is much more mundane. Beyond the utopian and dystopian hype of increased efficiencies and job displacement, how do we understand what disruptions intelligent systems will have on the workforce?

An Energy Efficient Framework For Localization And Coverage In Participatory Urban Sensing, Adnan Khan, Sk Kajal Arefin Imon, Sajal K. Das Oct 2014

An Energy Efficient Framework For Localization And Coverage In Participatory Urban Sensing, Adnan Khan, Sk Kajal Arefin Imon, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Participatory sensing is an approach to data collection where individuals use their smartphones to capture different scenarios, and upload to a server to create knowledge. A fundamental issue in such data collection process is the coverage of the collected data that reflects how well the targeted area is monitored. To ensure coverage requirements, the traditional approaches require the server to know the location of the participating mobile devices that takes significant amount of energy. In this paper, we propose a novel framework called PLUS for data collection in participatory sensing ensuring partial coverage, where a mobile device does not send …

A Cross Layer Routing Scheme For Passive Rfid Tag-To-Tag Communication, Haifeng Niu, S. Jagannathan Oct 2014

A Cross Layer Routing Scheme For Passive Rfid Tag-To-Tag Communication, Haifeng Niu, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A routing protocol for Passive RFID tag-to-tag networks is not reported in contrast with routing protocols for battery powered mobile wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. In this paper, we provide a cross-layer approach for passive RFID tag-to-tag communication. In the data link layer, we designed the medium access control (MAC) protocol which is suitable for passive tag-to-tag communication. In the network layer, we developed the optimal link cost multipath routing (OLCMR) protocol by using modulation depth as the link cost. Simulation results verify that proposed routing protocol consumes less energy when it is compared to optimum link state routing …

The Antisymmetry Betweenness Axiom And Hausdorff Continua, Paul Bankston Oct 2014

The Antisymmetry Betweenness Axiom And Hausdorff Continua, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

An interpretation of betweenness on a set satisfies the antisymmetry axiom at a point a if it is impossible for each of two distinct points to lie between the other and a. In this paper we study the role of antisymmetry as it applies to the K-interpretation of betweenness in a Hausdorff continuum X, where a point c lies between points a and b exactly when every subcontinuum of X containing both a and b contains c as well.

Workplace Surveillance, Tamara Kneese Oct 2014

Workplace Surveillance, Tamara Kneese

Media Studies

Employers have long devised techniques and used new technologies to surveil employees in order to increase efficiency, decrease theft, and otherwise assert power and control over subordinates. New and cheaper networked technologies make surveillance easier to implement, but what are the ramifications of widespread workplace surveillance?

Networked Employment Discrimination, Tamara Kneese Oct 2014

Networked Employment Discrimination, Tamara Kneese

Media Studies

Employers often struggle to assess qualified applicants, particularly in contexts where they receive hundreds of applications for job openings. In an effort to increase efficiency and improve the process, many have begun employing new tools to sift through these applications, looking for signals that a candidate is “the best fit.” Some companies use tools that offer algorithmic assessments of workforce data to identify the variables that lead to stronger employee performance, or to high employee attrition rates, while others turn to third party ranking services to identify the top applicants in a labor pool. Still others eschew automated systems, but …

Effect: An Energy Efficient Framework For Data Compression In Tree-Based Wireless Sensor Networks, Sk Kajal Arefin Imon, Adnan Khan, Sajal K. Das Oct 2014

Effect: An Energy Efficient Framework For Data Compression In Tree-Based Wireless Sensor Networks, Sk Kajal Arefin Imon, Adnan Khan, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Periodic data collection is an important application in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Since sensors are power constrained, building energy efficient data collection topology offers significant challenge. Compression of correlated data is one of the widely used techniques in WSNs where sensory data are compressed along their routes toward the sink. Consequently, a data compression tree is formed in which a sensor (say, child) selects its parent based on the degree of correlation among their sensed data, and the data of the child node is compressed at the parent node. In periodic data collection, the data collected by individual sensors can …

Fides: A Trust-Based Framework For Secure User Incentivization In Participatory Sensing, Francesco Restuccia, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Participatory sensing (PS) has recently attracted tremendous attention given its potential for a wide variety of sensing applications. Due to the fact that PS systems rely completely on the data provided by the users, incentivizing users' active participation while guaranteeing data reliability is paramount to effectively employ PS systems in practical scenarios. In this paper, we first define a set of attacks which compromise data reliability of existing PS applications. Next, we propose a scalable and secure trust-based framework, called FIDES, which relies on the concept of mobile security agents (MSAs) and Jsang's trust model to rule out incorrect reports …

The Information Value Methodology: How Users Assess The Quality Of Web Information, Marilou Haines Oct 2014

The Information Value Methodology: How Users Assess The Quality Of Web Information, Marilou Haines

Theses and Dissertations

The Internet is a self-regulating complex system in which users decide what is relevant through their actions. Since the burden of locating and evaluating information depends on knowledge, experience, and skill, this study rigorously and holistically investigates the Web users' experience. The study began with a multidisciplinary literature review to determine how academics assess IQ on the Web. While individual models are narrowly focused, in aggregate, they delineate the boundaries of IQ needs, and identify the dimensions that are significant to the Web community. These dimensions, categorized into six knowledge domains, are the core of the information value methodology (IVM). …

Scalable Tuning Of Building Models To Hourly Data, Aaron Garrett, Joshua New Oct 2014

Scalable Tuning Of Building Models To Hourly Data, Aaron Garrett, Joshua New

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Energy models of existing buildings are unreliable unless calibrated so that they correlate well with actual energy usage. Manual tuning requires a skilled professional and is prohibitively expensive for small projects, imperfect, nonrepeatable, and not scalable to the dozens of sensor channels that smart meters, smart appliances, and sensors are making available. A scalable, automated methodology is needed to quickly, intelligently calibrate building energy models to all available data, increase the usefulness of those models, and facilitate speed-and-scale penetration of simulation-based capabilities into the marketplace for actualized energy savings. The "Autotune" project is a novel, model-agnostic methodology that leverages supercomputing, …

Using Class Interfaces And Mock Objects To Unit Test Aspects, Michael Bryan Snider Oct 2014

Using Class Interfaces And Mock Objects To Unit Test Aspects, Michael Bryan Snider

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

In object oriented programming (OOP) class objects are individual units of code that encapsulate the desired functionality of each object. AOP is an attempt to handle the cross-cutting concerns that represent functionality needed by a class, but is not specific to that class. The cross-cutting functionality is implemented in AOP by using a class-like structure, the aspect. Aspects do not have their own context and as such are dependent upon other objects for their context. By not having their own context it is difficult to test the functionality of aspects. This study investigated the effectiveness of using class interfaces and …

Efficient And Secure Code Dissemination In Sensor Clouds, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Madria Oct 2014

Efficient And Secure Code Dissemination In Sensor Clouds, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present an efficient and secure code dissemination technique aimed at sensor clouds. Previous code dissemination techniques were geared toward traditional wireless sensor networks. They did not take into account, the dynamic nature of a sensor cloud, where the applications running on the motes may not just be updated but changed completely in successive code disseminations. The technique presented in this paper is based upon the observation that a large amount of code is common between applications in wireless sensor networks. Our technique first discovers the code common across various wireless sensor applications. It then distributes this …

E-Vet: Economic Reward/Penalty-Based System For Vehicular Traffic Management, Nilesh Padhariya, Ouri Wolfson, Anirban Mondal, Varun Gandhi, Sanjay Kumar Madria Oct 2014

E-Vet: Economic Reward/Penalty-Based System For Vehicular Traffic Management, Nilesh Padhariya, Ouri Wolfson, Anirban Mondal, Varun Gandhi, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose the E-VeT system for efficient vehicular traffic management in road networks using economy-based reward/penalty schemes. In E-VeT, base stations collaboratively facilitate dynamic vehicular route assignments for reducing the traffic congestion, average time of arrival and fuel consumption. The main contributions of this work are two-fold. First, it proposes an R2A (Revenue-based Route Allocation) scheme, which rewards vehicles for following system-assigned longer-time paths, and charges a fee for following system-assigned shorter-time paths. Furthermore, it penalizes vehicles for any deviations from the system-assigned paths. Second, it discusses a route allocation algorithm, which gives lesser-time paths as a preference to vehicles …

Taming The Software Chaos: True To Its Promise, Iftdss Eases The Burden Of Fuels Treatment Planning—And Does A Lot More Besides, Gail Wells Oct 2014

Taming The Software Chaos: True To Its Promise, Iftdss Eases The Burden Of Fuels Treatment Planning—And Does A Lot More Besides, Gail Wells

Joint Fire Science Program Digests

A key problem reported by the fuels treatment planning community is the difficulty and inefficiency of evaluating and then applying many planning tools and applications. Fuels specialists have struggled to find, load, and learn all the different fuels and fire planning models, not to mention the interface of running, adjusting, and inputting data specific to each model without the ability to easily share inputs/outputs between models.

The Interagency Fuels Treatment Decision Support System (IFTDSS) was conceived as a way for users to learn one interface, access a variety of data and models all in one place, and pass data (inputs …

Topology Dependence Of Ppm-Based Internet Protocol Traceback Schemes, Ankunda R. Kiremire Oct 2014

Topology Dependence Of Ppm-Based Internet Protocol Traceback Schemes, Ankunda R. Kiremire

Doctoral Dissertations

Multiple schemes that utilize probabilistic packet marking (PPM) have been proposed to deal with Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks by reconstructing their attack graphs and identifying the attack sources.

In the first part of this dissertation, we present our contribution to the family of PPM-based schemes for Internet Protocol (IP) traceback. Our proposed approach, Prediction-Based Scheme (PBS), consists of marking and traceback algorithms that reduce scheme convergence times by dealing with the problems of data loss and incomplete attack graphs exhibited by previous PPM-based schemes.

Compared to previous PPM-based schemes, the PBS marking algorithm ensures that traceback is possible …

Indoor Acoustic Mapping And Geolocation, Thomas Shyy Oct 2014

Indoor Acoustic Mapping And Geolocation, Thomas Shyy

Open Access Theses

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is widely used in navigations of flights, vehicles and travelers nowadays. However, the signals are not always available and there are some cases where the receptions of the GPS signal can be lost because of the presence of urban canyons, buildings, tunnels and forests. Another down side for the GPS is that indoor positioning can be really difficult because of the greater signal interference from the indoor.

On the other hand, the concept of echolocation has also been used for positioning purposes. Echolocation offers a promising approach to improve the quality of life of people …

In this paper, an MIS program promotion strategy was …

Pushing The Boundaries Of Tractable Ontology Reasoning, David Carral, Cristina Feier, Bernardo Cuenca Grau, Pascal Hitzler, Ian Horrocks Oct 2014

Pushing The Boundaries Of Tractable Ontology Reasoning, David Carral, Cristina Feier, Bernardo Cuenca Grau, Pascal Hitzler, Ian Horrocks

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We identify a class of Horn ontologies for which standard reasoning tasks such as instance checking and classification are tractable. The class is general enough to include the OWL 2 EL, QL, and RL profiles. Verifying whether a Horn ontology belongs to the class can be done in polynomial time. We show empirically that the class includes many real-world ontologies that are not included in any OWL 2 profile, and thus that polynomial time reasoning is possible for these ontologies.

Theoretical Analysis Of Steady State Genetic Algorithms, Alexandru Agapie, Alden H. Wright Oct 2014

Theoretical Analysis Of Steady State Genetic Algorithms, Alexandru Agapie, Alden H. Wright

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Evolutionary Algorithms, also known as Genetic Algorithms in a former terminology, are probabilistic algorithms for optimization, which mimic operators from natural selection and genetics. The paper analyses the convergence of the heuristic associated to a special type of Genetic Algorithm, namely the Steady State Genetic Algorithm (SSGA), considered as a discrete-time dynamical system non-generational model. Inspired by the Markov chain results in finite Evolutionary Algorithms, conditions are given under which the SSGA heuristic converges to the population consisting of copies of the best chromosome.

Publications

The concept of Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly moving from a vision to being pervasive in our everyday lives. This can be observed in the integration of connected sensors from a multitude of devices such as mobile phones, healthcare equipment, and vehicles. There is a need for the development of infrastructure support and analytical tools to handle IoT data, which are naturally big and complex. But, research on IoT data can be constrained by concerns about the release of privately owned data. In this paper, we present the design and implementation results of a synthetic IoT data generation framework. …
