Trivial Meet And Join Within The Lattice Of Monotone Triangles, John Engbers, Adam Hammett
Trivial Meet And Join Within The Lattice Of Monotone Triangles, John Engbers, Adam Hammett
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
The lattice of monotone triangles (n, ≼) ordered by entry-wise comparisons is studied. Let τmin denote the unique minimal element in this lattice, and τmax the unique maximum. The number of r-tuples of monotone triangles (τ1...,τr) with minimul infimum τmin (maximul supremum τmax, resp.) is shown to asymptotically approach r|n|r-1 as n→ ∞. Thus, with high probability this even implies that one of the τi is τmin (τmax, resp.). Higher-order error terms are also discussed.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common malignant brain tumor. GBM samples are classified into subtypes based on their transcriptomic and epigenetic profiles. Despite numerous studies to better characterize GBM biology, a comprehensive study to identify GBM subtype-specific master regulators, gene regulatory networks, and pathways is missing. Here, we used FastMEDUSA to compute master regulators and gene regulatory networks for each GBM subtype. We also ran Gene Set Enrichment Analysis and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis on GBM expression dataset from The Cancer Genome Atlas Project to compute GBM- and GBM subtype-specific pathways. Our analysis was able to recover some of the …

The demands of improving energy efficiency for high performance scientific applications arise crucially nowadays. Software-controlled hardware solutions directed by Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) have shown their effectiveness extensively. Although DVFS is beneficial to green computing, introducing DVFS itself can incur non-negligible overhead, if there exist a large number of frequency switches issued by DVFS. In this paper, we propose a strategy to achieve the optimal energy savings for distributed matrix multiplication via algorithmically trading more computation and communication at a time adaptively with user-specified memory costs for less DVFS switches, which saves 7.5% more energy on average than …

Recurrence Relations For Moments Of Dual Generalized Order Statistics From Weibull Gamma Distribution And Its Characterizations, M. A. W. Mahmoud, Y. Abdel-Aty, N. M. Mohamed, Gholamhossein Hamedani
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, we establish explicit forms and new recurrence relations satisfied by the single and product moments of dual generalized order statistics from Weibull gamma distribution (WGD). The results include as particular cases the relations for moments of reversed order statistics and lower records. We present characterizations of WGD based on (i) recurrence relation for single moments, (ii) truncated moments of certain function of the variable and (iii) hazard function.

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
We describe the design and prototype implementation of Indemics (_Interactive; Epi_demic; _Simulation;)—a modeling environment utilizing high-performance computing technologies for supporting complex epidemic simulations. Indemics can support policy analysts and epidemiologists interested in planning and control of pandemics. Indemics goes beyond traditional epidemic simulations by providing a simple and powerful way to represent and analyze policy-based as well as individual-based adaptive interventions. Users can also stop the simulation at any point, assess the state of the simulated system, and add additional interventions. Indemics is available to end-users via a web-based interface.
Detailed performance analysis shows that Indemics greatly enhances the …
Efficient Detection Of Counterfeit Products In Large-Scale Rfid Systems Using Batch Authentication Protocols, Farzana Rahman, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed
Efficient Detection Of Counterfeit Products In Large-Scale Rfid Systems Using Batch Authentication Protocols, Farzana Rahman, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
RFID technology facilitates processing of product information, making it a promising technology for anti-counterfeiting. However, in large-scale RFID applications, such as supply chain, retail industry, pharmaceutical industry, total tag estimation and tag authentication are two major research issues. Though there are per-tag authentication protocols and probabilistic approaches for total tag estimation in RFID systems, the RFID authentication protocols are mainly per-tag-based where the reader authenticates one tag at each time. For a batch of tags, current RFID systems have to identify them and then authenticate each tag sequentially, one at a time. This increases the protocol execution time due to …

Remarks On A Paper Of Lee And Lim, Gholamhossein Hamedani, Michael Slattery
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Lee and Lim (2009) state three characterizations of Loamax, exponential and power function distributions, the proofs of which, are based on the solutions of certain second order non-linear differential equations. For these characterizations, they make the following statement : "Therefore there exists a unique solution of the differential equation that satisfies the given initial conditions". Although the general solution of their first differential equation is easily obtainable, they do not obtain the general solutions of the other two differential equations to ensure their claim via initial conditions. In this very short report, we present the general solutions of these equations …

The Transmuted Marshall-Olkin Fréchet Distribution: Properties And Applications, Ahmed Z. Afify, Gholamhossein Hamedani, Indranil Ghosh, M. E. Mead
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
This paper introduces a new four-parameter lifetime model, which extends the Marshall-Olkin Fréchet distribution introduced by Krishna et al. (2013), called the transmuted Marshall-Olkin Fréchet distribution. Various structural properties including ordinary and incomplete moments, quantile and generating function, Rényi and q-entropies and order statistics are derived. The maximum likelihood method is used to estimate the model parameters. We illustrate the superiority of the proposed distribution over other existing distributions in the literature in modeling two real life data sets.

Varieties Of P-Restriction Semigroups, Peter R. Jones
Varieties Of P-Restriction Semigroups, Peter R. Jones
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
The restriction semigroups, in both their one-sided and two-sided versions, have arisen in various fashions, meriting study for their own sake. From one historical perspective, as “weakly E-ample” semigroups, the definition revolves around a “designated set” of commuting idempotents, better thought of as projections. This class includes the inverse semigroups in a natural fashion. In a recent paper, the author introduced P-restriction semigroups in order to broaden the notion of “projection” (thereby encompassing the regular *-semigroups). That study is continued here from the varietal perspective introduced for restriction semigroups by V. Gould. The relationship between varieties of regular …

Essays On The Digital Divide, Belal Abdelfattah
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The digital divide is a phenomenon that is globally persistent, despite rapidly decreasing costs in technology. While much of the variance in the adoption and use of information communication technology (ICT) that defines the digital divide can be explained by socioeconomic and demographic variables, there is still significant unaccounted variance that needs to be explained if the world's population is expected to be brought more fully into the digital age. The present research addresses this need with three cross-country studies. Study 1 primarily investigates the time individuals spend with traditional media sources as a likely explanation for their frequency of …
A Visualization And Simulation Tool That Will Generate Effective Patrolling Strategies To Protect The U.S. Borders From Illegal Intrusion Using Game Theoretic Methods And Models, Eric Gutierrez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In the recent decade, the United States Border Patrol has increased the presence of border security officers at points of entry along the U.S.- Mexico border. In response to this increased presence of border security officials at ports of entries, illegal intruders have rerouted their intrusions in between ports of entry, in harsher terrain areas of the U.S. (e.g., the Arizona desert). The U.S. Border Patrol could benefit from a tool that plans effective border patrolling routes, and helps border security officials to make risk-based decisions for resource allocation. We are currently developing a tool called Genetic Algorithm for a …

Most electronic devices we are familiar with, such as cell phones and computers, are small and require similarly small electronic components arranged and connected in small areas. Finding the right size and arrangement of the components inside a device can be a challenge. The manufacturing process of the components limits their possible size, some components have specific needs to operate at a certain speed, and the total area of the device is also limited. In portable devices, these designs have one important objective: that the entire device consumes the minimum amount of electricity possible, so the device can keep functioning …

An Optimization Of Neighbor Discovery In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Felipe Jovel
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This Thesis aims to improve the performance of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) that use soft-state signaling for neighbor discovery, specifically OLSR. In particular, it uses simulations and previous work based on experiments conducted on a physical test bed to study the behavior of the neighbor-discovery algorithm used by OLSR to identify and explore ways to optimize the neighbor-discovery process. Candidate optimizations include the actual and relative settings of the refresh and expiry timers used by the algorithm.
Previous studies focused on understanding how the settings of the algorithms Hello Interval (δ) and TC Interval refresh timers affect network performance …

Public Social Network Sites And Social Recruiting, Abby Peters
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Social network sites (SNSs) are an increasingly popular form of social media used by individuals and organizations. As these platforms continue to transform the way people communicate with one another, they are simultaneously revolutionizing the way individuals interact with organizations. Part of this dramatic change is apparent in the processes by which organizations are recruiting employees and job seekers are pursuing employment. To investigate these phenomena, I employed the diffusion of innovations theory in a SNS context to examine the relationship between organizations' use of their corporate career website and their use of SNSs as recruiting sources. Subsequently, I used …

Strongly Coupled Quark Matter: Chiral Symmetry Breaking In A Magnetic Field, And Eos In The Bec-Bec Crossover, Israel Portillo Vazquez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
We explore chiral symmetry breaking in a magnetic field within a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model of interacting massless quarks including tensor channels. The new interaction channels are opened up through Fierz identities due to the breaking of the rotational symmetry by the magnetic field. We demonstrate that the magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking leads to the generation of two independent condensates, the conventional chiral condensate and a spin-one condensate. While the chiral condensate generates a dynamical fermion mass, the spin-one condensate gives rise to a dynamical anomalous magnetic moment for the fermions. We also investigate the possibility of a crossover from …

Permit Tool: Development Of An Algorithm To Determine Performance Life Of Hma Mixes In Texas, Luis Alberto Torres Escobedo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
A number of hot mix asphalt (HMA) types, such as permeable friction course (PFC), stone mastic asphalt (SMA), performance design mixes and conventional dense graded mixes are currently used to construct or overlay Texas roads. One of the important inputs into current pavement design programs used by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is the performance lives of HMA mixes. To determine the best mix type for a particular job or to analyze the performance of a mix or a road, a new system can be developed to rationally quantify the HMA mix performance. This system must have access to …

Scale-Up And On-Line Monitoring Of Gas-Solid Systems Using Advanced And Non-Invasive Measurement Techniques, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan, Shreekanta Aradhya, Faraj Zaid, Neven Ali, Thaar Aljuwaya
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Industry relies on gas-solid systems for numerous processes. Flow dynamics play an important role in achieving the desired results. The present study proposes, validates and demonstrates a novel mechanistic scale-up approach based on maintaining similar radial profile or cross sectional distribution of gas holdup in two different gas-solid systems in order to achieve hydrodynamics similarity using advanced measurement techniques. This new methodology for scale-up and design has been implemented on gas-solid spouted bed which has been used for drying, granulation and coating. The development can be extrapolated to other gas-solid systems encountered in phosphate processes.

Sir Isaac Newton studied the world around him. He observed unexplainable phenomena that the math of his time could not prove. With the help of Gottfried Leibniz, he created infinitesimal calculus to prove his theories. The new concepts he created revolutionized science, and opened new realms of science previously unthought of. In 2002, Dr. Stephen Wolfram published A New Kind of Science, He argues that the processes of understanding cellular automata can be applied to other aspects of science. Dr. Rodrigo Obando of Columbus State University took Dr. Wolfram's work and dissected it. By breaking down the rules, he started …

In this paper, a genetic algorithm-based optimization is used to simultaneously minimize two competing objectives guiding the operation of the Jefferson Lab's Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility linacs: cavity heat load and radio frequency cavity trip rates. The results represent a significant improvement to the standard linac energy management tool and thereby could lead to a more efficient Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility configuration. This study also serves as a proof of principle of how a genetic algorithm can be used for optimizing other linac-based machines.

Fixed Final-Time Near Optimal Regulation Of Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems In Affine Form Using Output Feedback, Qiming Zhao, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, the fixed final-time near optimal output regulation of affine nonlinear discrete-time systems with unknown system dynamics is considered. First, a neural network (NN)-based observer is proposed to reconstruct both the system state vector and control coefficient matrix. Next, actor-critic structure is utilized to approximate the time-varying solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation or value function. To satisfy the terminal constraint, a new error term is defined and incorporated in the NN update law so that the terminal constraint error is also minimized over time. A NN with constant weights and time-dependent activation function is employed to approximate …

Adaptive Neural Network-Based Optimal Control Of Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems In Strict-Feedback Form, H. Zargarzadeh, T. Dierks, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper focuses on neural network (NN) based optimal control of nonlinear continuous-time systems in strict-feedback form when the system dynamics are known by using an adaptive backstepping approach. A single NN-based adaptive approach is designed to learn the solution of the infinite horizon continuous-time Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation while the corresponding optimal control input that minimizes the HJB equation is calculated in a forward-in-time manner without using value and policy iterations. First, the optimal control problem is solved for a generic multi-input and multi-output nonlinear system with a state feedback approach. Then the approach is extended to a single-input and …

An Online Outlier Identification And Removal Scheme For Improving Fault Detection Performance, Hasan Ferdowsi, Sarangapani Jagannathan, Maciej Jan Zawodniok
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Measured data or states for a nonlinear dynamic system is usually contaminated by outliers. Identifying and removing outliers will make the data (or system states) more trustworthy and reliable since outliers in the measured data (or states) can cause missed or false alarms during fault diagnosis. In addition, faults can make the system states nonstationary needing a novel analytical model-based fault detection (FD) framework. In this paper, an online outlier identification and removal (OIR) scheme is proposed for a nonlinear dynamic system. Since the dynamics of the system can experience unknown changes due to faults, traditional observer-based techniques cannot be …

The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has become a more important component in high-performance computing systems as it accelerates data and compute intensive applications significantly with less cost and power. The GPU achieves high performance by executing massive number of threads in parallel in a SPMD (Single Program Multiple Data) fashion. Threads are grouped into workgroups by programmer and workgroups are then assigned to each compute core on the GPU by hardware. Once assigned, a workgroup is further subgrouped into wavefronts of the fixed number of threads by hardware when executed in a SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) fashion. In this …
Peering Into The Discourse Of Industrial Design Training Through A Sustainability Lens, Norman M. Su, Haodan Tan, Eli Blevis
Peering Into The Discourse Of Industrial Design Training Through A Sustainability Lens, Norman M. Su, Haodan Tan, Eli Blevis
Design Thinking Research Symposium
Now well established in HCI, the lens of sustainability may be applied to educational practices in industrial design and interaction design. By sustainability, we mean to include notions of mitigation of the environmental effects of climate change. In this paper, we present an analysis of student projects in a junior and senior industrial design class dataset. Drawing from discourse analysis, we examine how the industrial design classroom serves as a space to socially construct the philosophies and goals inherent in “good” design. We then examine how the lens of sustainability is implicated into the industrial design “way” as espoused by …

The goal of this study was to investigate and compare user search activities of two discovery tools at an academic library. The implementation of a new discovery tool (Primo by Ex Libris) to replace an existing system (VuFind) provided a unique opportunity to collect transaction logs of both systems and examine user search behavior in an empirical test. Results from a transaction log analysis and a user study of this study have contributed to the understanding of users’ search behavior and their preferences and perceptions of the two systems. We find both commonalities and differences between VuFind and Primo for …

Study On Endurance Of Flash Memory Ssds, Mochan Shrestha
Wayne State University Dissertations
Flash memory promises to revolutionize storage systems because of its massive performance gains, ruggedness, large decrease in power usage and physical space requirements, but it is not a direct replacement for magnetic hard disks. Flash memory possesses fundamentally different characteristics and in order to fully utilize the positive aspects of flash memory, we must engineer around its unique limitations. The primary limitations are lack of in-place updates, the asymmetry between the sizes of the write and erase operations, and the limited endurance of flash memory cells. This leads to the need for efficient methods for block cleaning, combating write amplification …
