Fast Pure R Implementation Of Gee: Application Of The Matrix Package, Lee S. Mcdaniel, Nicholas C. Henderson, Paul J. Rathouz
The R Journal
Generalized estimating equation solvers in R only allow for a few pre-determined options for the link and variance functions. We provide a package, geeM, which is implemented entirely in R and allows for user specified link and variance functions. The sparse matrix representations provided in the Matrix package enable a fast implementation. To gain speed, we make use of analytic inverses of the working correlation when possible and a trick to find quick numeric inverses when an analytic inverse is not available. Through three examples, we demonstrate the speed of geeM, which is not much worse than C …

Inform 7 Usability Precompiler or I7UP is a project which helps Inform 7 authors with their stories by diversifying the possibilities in the author’s interactive fiction. I7UP reads and analyzes the Inform story that is passed in through python and natural language processing then provides the user with a selection of choices to add to his story and lastly automatically generates the corresponding Inform 7 code. By utilizing the combination of Python, Django, and HTML/CSS, I7UP is able to provide an easytouse interface which helps generate additional "Understand" statements and "Conjugated Verb" statements. I7UP is an authoring aid for Inform …
Channels: Easy Video Content Consumption, Alexander R. Ledwith
Channels: Easy Video Content Consumption, Alexander R. Ledwith
Computer Engineering
The idea for this project is to take a user’s digital movie and television show library, and organize the individual videos into lists that will continuously and concurrently play like cable TV channels. This means that when a list of channels is switched to, video content will automatically start playing, possibly in the middle, based on a schedule. It should serve the needs of the user by allowing the user to quickly watch any of their existing channels, easily add a new channel based on chosen criteria or manual selection, and easily add new video content. In addition, the product …

Integrated Collision Avoidance System Sensor Evaluation Final Design Project, Alex F. Graebe, Bridgette S. Kimball, Drew T. Lavoise
Mechanical Engineering
Following the development of Aircraft Collision Avoidance Technology (ACAT) by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a need arose to transition the life-saving technology to aid the general aviation community. Considering the realistic cost of implementation, it was decided that the technology should be adapted to function on any smartphone, using that device as an end-to-end solution to sense, process, and alert the pilot to imminent threats. In September of 2012, the SAS (Sense and Survive) Senior Project Team at California Polytechnic University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo was assigned the task of using smartphone technology to accurately sense …

Demo: Approximate Semantic Matching In The Collider Event Processing Engine, Souleiman Hasan, Kalpa Gunaratna, Yongrui Qin, Edward Curry
Kno.e.sis Publications
This demo presents a use case from the energy management domain. It builds upon previous work on approximate semantic matching of heterogeneous events and compares two semantic matching scenarios: exact and approximate. It illustrates how a large number of exact matching event subscriptions are needed to match heterogeneous power consumption events. It then demonstrates how a small number of approximate semantic matching subscriptions are needed but possibly with a lower true positives/negatives performance. The demo is delivered via the COLLIDER approximate event processing engine currently under development in DERI.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Ind-privacy and unp-privacy, later refined to unp∗-privacy, are two different classes of privacy models for RFID authentication protocols. These models have captured the major anonymity and untraceability related attacks regarding RFID authentication protocols with privacy, and existing work indicates that unp∗-privacy seems to be a stronger notion when compared with ind-privacy. In this paper, we continue studying the RFID privacy models, and there are two folds regarding our results. First of all, we describe a new traceability attack and show that schemes proven secure in unp∗-privacy may not be secure against this new and practical type of traceability attacks. We …

Visual Tracking Via Locality Sensitive Histograms, Shengfeng He, Qingxiong Yang, Rynson W.H. Lau, Jian Wang, Ming-Hsuan Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents a novel locality sensitive histogram algorithm for visual tracking. Unlike the conventional image histogram that counts the frequency of occurrences of each intensity value by adding ones to the corresponding bin, a locality sensitive histogram is computed at each pixel location and a floating-point value is added to the corresponding bin for each occurrence of an intensity value. The floating-point value declines exponentially with respect to the distance to the pixel location where the histogram is computed, thus every pixel is considered but those that are far away can be neglected due to the very small weights …

Attribute-Based Access To Scalable Media In Cloud-Assisted Content Sharing, Yongdong Wu, Zhuo Wei, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents a novel Multi-message Ciphertext Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (MCP-ABE) technique, and employs the MCP-ABE to design an access control scheme for sharing scalable media based on data consumers’ attributes (e.g., age, nationality, gender) rather than an explicit list of the consumers’ names. The scheme is efficient and flexible because MCP-ABE allows a content provider to specify an access policy and encrypt multiple messages within one ciphertext such that only the users whose attributes satisfy the access policy can decrypt the ciphertext. Moreover, the paper shows how to support resource-limited mobile devices by offloading computational intensive perations to cloud …

A Generic Decision Making Framework For Autonomous Systems, Connor Lange
Master's Theses
With the rising popularity of small satellites, such as CubeSats, many smaller institutions previously incapable of developing and deploying a spacecraft have starting to do so. Institutions with a history of space flight, such as NASA JPL, have begun to put projects on CubeSats that would normally fly on much larger satellites. As a result, the institutions with space flight heritage have begun to port spacecraft software that was previously designed for much larger and more complex satellites to the CubeSat platform. Unfortunately for universities, who are the majority of all institutions devel- oping CubeSats, these ported systems are too …

The Accessible User Interaction Framework For Android Applications, Xiaoxi Luo
Master's Theses
As mobile technologies advance, accessibility features of smartphones are continu- ously improving and becoming more prevalent. It is essential that the user interaction design of mobile applications provides equal access and equal service to all our com- munity, especially for people with disabilities. However, there are no general mobile accessibility design guidelines publicly available. This paper reviews the web acces- sibility development guidelines as a reference, and the current accessibility features provided by modern mobile operating systems.
It is proposed in this paper to use interactive spoken dialogues as the user interac- tion framework for accessible mobile applications. The idea …
Computer Sketch Recognition, Richard Steigerwald
Computer Sketch Recognition, Richard Steigerwald
Master's Theses
Tens of thousands of years ago, humans drew sketches that we can see and identify even today. Sketches are the oldest recorded form of human communication and are still widely used. The universality of sketches supersedes that of culture and language. Despite the universal accessibility of sketches by humans, computers are unable to interpret or even correctly identify the contents of sketches drawn by humans with a practical level of accuracy.
In my thesis, I demonstrate that the accuracy of existing sketch recognition techniques can be improved by optimizing the classification criteria. Current techniques classify a 20,000 sketch crowd-sourced dataset …
Evaluating Usability Evaluations, Allen Leo Dunlea
Evaluating Usability Evaluations, Allen Leo Dunlea
Master's Theses
We live in an age when consumers can now shop and browse the web using hand-held devices. This means that competitive companies need to have a website to represent their brand and to conduct business. E-commerce sites need to pay special attention to the usability of their sites, since it has such an impact on how potential costumers view their brand.
Jakob Nielsen defines usability as a "quality attribute that assesses how easy user interfaces are to use"; he separates usability into five quality components: learnability, efficiency, memorability, errors and satisfaction. The current standard for testing usability involves having …

Understanding Common Perceptions From Online Social Media, Derek Doran, Swapna S. Gokhale, Aldo Dagnino
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Modern society habitually uses online social media services to publicly share observations, thoughts, opinions, and beliefs at any time and from any location. These geotagged social media posts may provide aggregate insights into people's perceptions on a bad range of topics across a given geographical area beyond what is currently possible through services such as Yelp and Foursquare. This paper develops probabilistic language models to investigate whether collective, topic-based perceptions within a geographical area can be extracted from the content of geotagged Twitter posts. The capability of the methodology is illustrated using tweets from three areas of different sizes. An …
Finding Evidence Of Metacognition In An Eportfolio Community: Beyond Text, Across New Media, Kathryn Wozniak, Jose Zagal
Finding Evidence Of Metacognition In An Eportfolio Community: Beyond Text, Across New Media, Kathryn Wozniak, Jose Zagal
School of Continuing and Professional Studies Faculty and Staff Works
Finding evidence of how metacognition is demonstrated in educational ePortfolios is often limited to written artifact analysis and ignores new media such as images, video, links, and navigation schema. This study seeks to begin to fill this gap through a qualitative content analysis of 30 learners’ ePortfolios developed in a networked ePortfolio community. We found evidence of learners’ metacognition in their choices, integration, and organization of new media content in the ePortfolio. We propose that intentional analysis of learners’ choices and arrangement of new media can help educators and researchers find additional evidence of metacognition beyond text within digital learning …

Preparing Detailed 3d Building Models For Google Earth Integration, Linh Truong-Hong, Thanh Thoa Pham Thi, Junjun Yin, James Carswell
Conference papers
Today's spatially aware users are becoming more interested in retrieving personalised and task relevant information, requiring detailed 3D city models linked to non-spatial attribute data. However, current implementations of 3D city models are typically LoD2 that don't include geometric or attribute details about many visible features (e.g. rooms) of a building. As such, valueadded applications developed for web-based and wireless platforms are limited to querying for available non-spatial business data at the building level only. To overcome this, geometrically accurate 3D building models are necessary to enable users to visualize, interact, and query for task specific non-spatial business data. This …

Linear Model Estimation Of Nonlinear Systems Using Least-Squares Algorithm5, Alireza Rahrooh, Walter W. Buchanan, Remzi Seker
Publications
This paper presents utilizes Least-Squares Algorithm to obtain more accurate linear models of nonlinear systems using parameter estimation. This approach generates an optimal linear model which is valid over a wide range of trajectories and converges to the desired steady-state value with no errors unlike the existing techniques. The proposed technique is very efficient and does not require storing the data. Therefore, it can easily be used and implemented with limited resources for undergraduate curriculum especially in underdeveloped countries. Most available techniques for linearization of nonlinear system are only valid about the operating point; furthermore, the knowledge of the operating …

Within the frameworks of learning in the limit of indexed classes of recursive languages from positive data and automatic learning in the limit of indexed classes of regular languages (with automatically computable sets of indices), we study the problem of minimizing the maximum number of mind changes by a learner on all languages with indices not exceeding . For inductive inference of recursive languages, we establish two conditions under which can be made smaller than any recursive unbounded non-decreasing function. We also establish how is affected if at least one of these two conditions does not hold. In the case …

Euler And The Ongoing Search For Odd Perfect Numbers, Brian D. Beasley
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2013
Leonhard Euler, after proving that every even perfect number has the form given by Euclid, turned his attention to finding odd perfect numbers. Euler established a basic factorization pattern that every odd perfect number must have, and mathematicians have expanded upon this Eulerian form ever since. This paper will present a brief summary of Euler’s result and some recent generalizations. It will also note connections between odd perfect numbers and the abundancy index (the abundancy index of a positive integer is the ratio of the sum of its positive divisors to itself). In particular, finding a positive integer with an …

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2013
There is a need for a new style of supporting a computer course. Although it is widely recognized that computer technology provides essential tools for all current scientific work, few university curricula adequately ground science majors in the fundamentals that underlie this technology. Introducing science students to computational thinking in the areas of algorithms and data structures, data representation and accuracy, abstraction, performance issues, and database concepts can enable future scientists to become intelligent, creative and effective users of this technology. The intent of this course is not to turn scientists into computer scientists, but rather to enhance their ability …

A Different Approach, Catherine Crockett
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2013
This paper discusses an approach used to encourage science majors to rethink their attitudes and study habits in a first semester calculus course. Two activities were used to enhance study habits. They are outlining concepts and in-class quizzes designed for self-evaluation of skills. After using both methods in two sections of the calculus course, the students were surveyed to determine if these activities were successful. A majority of the students felt the activities were helpful and wanted to continue them.
