Analyzing The Performance Of The Sofia Infrared Telescope, Sarah M. Bass, Jeffrey Van Cleve, Zaheer Ali
STAR Program Research Presentations
The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is an airborne near-space observatory onboard a modified Boeing 747-SP aircraft, which flies at altitudes of 45,000 ft., above 99% of the Earth’s water vapor. SOFIA contains an effective 2.5 m infrared (IR) telescope that has a dichroic tertiary mirror, reflecting IR and visible wavelengths to the science instrument (SI) and focal plane imager (FPI), respectively. To date, seven different SIs have been designed to cover a wide range of wavelengths and spectral resolutions. Since the telescope operates in the infrared, different techniques, including chopping, nodding, and dithering, are used to reduce the …

Verdicts: Visual Exploratory Requirements Discovery And Injection For Comprehension And Testing Of Software, Sefik Kanat Bolazar
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Dissertations
We introduce a methodology and research tools for visual exploratory software analysis. VERDICTS combines exploratory testing, tracing, visualization, dynamic discovery and injection of requirements specifications into a live quick-feedback cycle, without recompilation or restart of the system under test. This supports discovery and verification of software dynamic behavior, software comprehension, testing, and locating the defect origin. At its core, VERDICTS allows dynamic evolution and testing of hypotheses about requirements and behavior, by using contracts as automated component verifiers.
We introduce Semantic Mutation Testing as an approach to evaluate concordance of automated verifiers and the functional specifications they represent with respect …

FLITECAM Data Processing Validation
Many of the challenges that come from working with astronomical imaging arise from the reduction of raw data into scientifically meaningful data. First Light Infrared Test CAMera (FLITECAM) is an infrared camera operating in the 1.0–5.5 μm waveband on board SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy). Due to the significant noise from the atmosphere and the camera itself, astronomers have developed many methods to reduce the effects of atmospheric and instrumental emission. The FLITECAM Data Reduction Program (FDRP) is a program, developed at SOFIA Science Center, subtracts darks, removes flats, and dithers images.

Complete Description Of Idempotent Hedges In Fuzzy Logic, Jaime Nava
Complete Description Of Idempotent Hedges In Fuzzy Logic, Jaime Nava
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In describing expert knowledge, it is often important to properly take into account hedges} like "very", "somewhat", etc. In particular, fuzzy logic provides a consistent way of describing hedges. For some of the hedges, a repetition changes the meaning: e.g., "very very small" is smaller than "very small". However, other hedges -- like "somewhat" -- are idempotent, in the sense that repeating this hedge twice does not change the meaning. In this paper, we provide a complete description of such idempotent hedges.
On Early Stages Of Idea Propagation, The Number Of Adopters Grows As N(T) ~ C * Ta: Theoretical Explanation Of The Empirical Observation, L. Octavio Lerma, Deana Pennington, Vladik Kreinovich
On Early Stages Of Idea Propagation, The Number Of Adopters Grows As N(T) ~ C * Ta: Theoretical Explanation Of The Empirical Observation, L. Octavio Lerma, Deana Pennington, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
New good ideas sometimes propagate too slowly. To speed up their propagation, we need to have a quantitative understanding of how ideas propagate. An intuitive understanding of ideas propagation has led to several reasonable first-approximation mathematical models. These models provide a good description of idea propagation on the later stages, when the ideas have already been adopted by a reasonably large number of people. However, at the critically important early stages, these models are not perfect: these models predict a linear growth with time, while empirical growth data is often better described by a power law. In this paper, we …

Vine Copulas As A Way To Describe And Analyze Multi-Variate Dependence In Econometrics: Computational Motivation And Comparison With Bayesian Networks And Fuzzy Approaches, Songsak Sriboonchitta, Jianxu Liu, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In the last decade, vine copulas emerged as a new efficient techniques for describing and analyzing multi-variate dependence in econometrics. Our experience has shown, however, that while these techniques have been successfully applied to many practical problems of econometrics, there is still a lot of confusion and misunderstanding related to vine copulas. In this paper, we provide a motivation for this new technique from the computational viewpoint. We show that other techniques used to described dependence -- Bayesian networks and fuzzy techniques -- can be viewed as a particular case of vine copulas.

Fuzzy extension of Description Logics (DLs) allows the formal representation and handling of fuzzy or vague knowledge. In this paper, we consider the problem of reasoning with fuzzy-EL+, which is a fuzzy extension of EL+. We first identify the challenges and present revised completion classification rules for fuzzy-EL+ that can be handled by MapReduce programs. We then propose an algorithm for scale reasoning with fuzzy-EL+ ontologies using MapReduce. Some preliminary experimental results are provided to show the scalability of our algorithm.

The result confirmed the hypothesis that the use of the Safeer program provides quality service delivery within SACM, which in turn benefits …
Experimental Studies Of Android App Development For Smart Chess Board System, Srujan Gopu
Experimental Studies Of Android App Development For Smart Chess Board System, Srujan Gopu
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Playing chess on a smart phone has gained popularity in the last few years, offering the convenience of correspondence play, automatic recording of a game, etc. Although a good number of players love playing chess on a tablet/smart phone, it doesn't come close to the experience of playing over the traditional board. The feel and pleasure are more real when playing face down with the opponent sitting across each other rather than playing in mobile devices. This is especially true during chess tournaments. It would be ideal to enhance the experience of playing chess on board with the features of …
Human Action Recognition Via Fused Kinematic Structure And Surface Representation, Salah R. Althloothi
Human Action Recognition Via Fused Kinematic Structure And Surface Representation, Salah R. Althloothi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Human action recognition from visual data has remained a challenging problem in the field of computer vision and pattern recognition. This dissertation introduces a new methodology for human action recognition using motion features extracted from kinematic structure, and shape features extracted from surface representation of human body. Motion features are used to provide sufficient information about human movement, whereas shape features are used to describe the structure of silhouette. These features are fused at the kernel level using Multikernel Learning (MKL) technique to enhance the overall performance of human action recognition. In fact, there are advantages in using multiple types …

Wireless Cloud Architecture Based On Thin Clients And Ontologies, Todor Cooklev, Lubomir Stanchev, Chao Chen
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Recently, several researchers have discovered the need for radios to use description techniques for the objects in the wireless realm. The concept of RF field-programmable analog array (FPAA) was also proposed recently and the lack of hardware abstractions was identified as a problem. We propose a hardware abstraction for RF FPAAs, which enables an open RF-digital interface. We advance the concept of wireless thin clients. These clients are connected to the cloud using the open RF-digital interface. We describe the architecture of a comprehensive wireless ontology.

How To Distinguish True Dependence From Varying Independence?, Marketa Krmelova, Martin Trnecka, Vladik Kreinovich, Berlin Wu
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
A usual statistical criterion for the quantities X and Y to be independent is that the corresponding distribution function F(x,y) is equal to the product of the corresponding marginal distribution functions. If this equality is violated, this is usually taken to mean that X and Y are dependent. In practice, however, the inequality may be caused by the fact that we have a mixture of several populations, in each of which X and Y are independent. In this paper, we show how we can distinguish true dependence from such varying independence. This can also lead to new measures to degree …
How To Faster Test A Device For Different Combinations Of Parameters, Francisco Zapata, Luis C. Gutierrez, Vladik Kreinovich
How To Faster Test A Device For Different Combinations Of Parameters, Francisco Zapata, Luis C. Gutierrez, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
A device has to function properly under all possible conditions: e.g., for all temperatures within a given range, for all possible humidity values within a given range, etc. Ideally, it would be nice to be able to test a device for all possible combinations of these parameters, but the number of such combinations is often so huge that such an exhaustive testing is not possible. Instead, it is reasonable to check the device for all possible values of each parameter, for each possible pairs of values of two parameters, and, in general, for all possible combinations of values of k …

Why Trapezoidal And Triangular Membership Functions Work So Well: Towards A Theoretical Explanation, Aditi Barua, Lalitha Snigdha Mudunuri, Olga Kosheleva
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In fuzzy logic, an imprecise ("fuzzy") property is described by its membership function μ(x), i.e., by a function which describes, for each real number x, to what degree this real number satisfies the desired property. In principle, membership functions can be of different shape, but in practice, trapezoidal and triangular membership functions are most frequently used. In this paper, we provide an interval-based theoretical explanation for this empirical fact.

Note On Fair Price Under Interval Uncertainty, Joshua Mckee, Joe Lorkowski, Thavatchai Ngamsantivong
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Often, in decision making situations, we do not know the exact value of a gain resulting from making each decision, we only know the bounds on this gain. To make a reasonable decision under such interval uncertainty, it makes sense to estimate the fair price of each alternative, and then to select the alternative with the highest price. In this paper, we show that the value of the fair price can be uniquely determined from some reasonable requirements: e.g., the additivity requirement, that the fair price of two objects together should be equal to the sum of the fair prices …

Computing Covariance And Correlation In Optimally Privacy-Protected Statistical Databases: Feasible Algorithms, Joshua Day, Ali Jalal-Kamali, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many real-life situations, e.g., in medicine, it is necessary to process data while preserving the patients' confidentiality. One of the most efficient methods of preserving privacy is to replace the exact values with intervals that contain these values. For example, instead of an exact age, a privacy-protected database only contains the information that the age is, e.g., between 10 and 20, or between 20 and 30, etc. Based on this data, it is important to compute correlation and covariance between different quantities. For privacy-protected data, different values from the intervals lead, in general, to different estimates for the desired …

Fuzzy Sets Can Be Interpreted As Limits Of Crisp Sets, And This Can Help To Fuzzify Crisp Notions, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Thavatchai Ngamsantivong
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Fuzzy sets have been originally introduced as generalizations of crisp sets, and this is how they are usually considered. From the mathematical viewpoint, the problem with this approach is that most notions allow many different generalizations, so every time we try to generalize some notions to fuzzy sets, we have numerous alternatives. In this paper, we show that fuzzy sets can be alternatively viewed as limits of crisp sets. As a result, for some notions, we can come up with a unique generalization -- as the limit of the results of applying this notion to the corresponding crisp sets.

In the recent past, there has been a phenomenal increase in monitoring the physical world using wireless sensor networks comprising tiny computing devices with integrated sensors. These devices are deployed in large numbers, often across large spaces and within hostile environments.
Wireless sensor networks are used to gather meaningful data and to enable important applications. They must satisfy some basic requirements. Specifially, they must be maintenance free, inexpensive, reliable, and scalable. The devices used in these networks are deployed in the hundreds to thousands and rely on battery power. It is expensive to change these batteries in such large networks, …
Adaptive Collective Routing Using Gaussian Process Dynamic Congestion Models, Siyuan Liu, Yisong Yue, Ramayya Krishnan
Adaptive Collective Routing Using Gaussian Process Dynamic Congestion Models, Siyuan Liu, Yisong Yue, Ramayya Krishnan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We consider the problem of adaptively routing a fleet of cooperative vehicles within a road network in the presence of uncertain and dynamic congestion conditions. To tackle this problem, we first propose a Gaussian Process Dynamic Congestion Model that can effectively characterize both the dynamics and the uncertainty of congestion conditions. Our model is efficient and thus facilitates real-time adaptive routing in the face of uncertainty. Using this congestion model, we develop an efficient algorithm for non-myopic adaptive routing to minimize the collective travel time of all vehicles in the system. A key property of our approach is the ability …

Study Of Feasability For Phase Difference Extraction Using Software Defined Radio In Location Analysis, Paul Miller
Masters Theses
Here is a method for using the phase of an HF radio signal for use in location analysis. This computation is implemented in a software defined radio processing block in the GNU Radio environment. The signals analyzed are received by an Ettus Research USRP SDR. We created a phase analysis system called WMU Rootsync, which compares the roots of a received signal to the roots of a generated reference signal for the phase analysis. This research describes a prototype method for phase analysis only. Future projects may use these ideas differently than presented here. We intend for future projects to …

Decrypting the secret of beauty or attractiveness has been the pursuit of artists and philosophers for centuries. To date, the computational model for attractiveness estimation has been actively explored in the computer vision and multimedia community, yet with the focus mainly on facial features. In this article, we conduct a comprehensive study on female attractiveness conveyed by single/multiple modalities of cues, that is, face, dressing and/or voice; the aim is to discover how different modalities individually and collectively affect the human sense of beauty.
To extensively investigate the problem, we collect the Multi-Modality Beauty (M2B) dataset, which is …

Systems that are written to achieve the same high level specifications can vary in subtle ways. Depending on a programmer's objective, using one variant of a program or algorithm over another may be beneficial, and this objective may change over time. However we do not have sufficient techniques to compare two different system variants side-by-side to find specific behavioral differences, particularly in the absence of source code. Assuming two system implementations take the same inputs and produce the same outputs or exhibit the same behavior under most conditions, we want to find input instances where the behavior diverges for a …
Solving The Search For Source Code, Kathryn T. Stolee
Solving The Search For Source Code, Kathryn T. Stolee
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Programmers frequently search for source code to reuse using keyword searches. When effective and efficient, a code search can boost programmer productivity, however, the search effectiveness depends on the programmer's ability to specify a query that captures how the desired code may have been implemented. Further, the results often include many irrelevant matches that must be filtered manually. More semantic search approaches could address these limitations, yet existing approaches either do not scale, are not flexible enough to find approximate matches, or require complex specifications.
We propose a novel approach to semantic search that addresses some of these limitations and …
