Will Fault Localization Work For These Failures? An Automated Approach To Predict Effectiveness Of Fault Localization Tools, Tien-Duy B. Le, David Lo
Will Fault Localization Work For These Failures? An Automated Approach To Predict Effectiveness Of Fault Localization Tools, Tien-Duy B. Le, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Debugging is a crucial yet expensive activity to improve the reliability of software systems. To reduce debugging cost, various fault localization tools have been proposed. A spectrum-based fault localization tool often outputs an ordered list of program elements sorted based on their likelihood to be the root cause of a set of failures (i.e., their suspiciousness scores). Despite the many studies on fault localization, unfortunately, however, for many bugs, the root causes are often low in the ordered list. This potentially causes developers to distrust fault localization tools. Recently, Parnin and Orso highlight in their user study that many debuggers …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In modern society, more and more people are suffering from some type of stress. Monitoring and timely detecting of stress level will be very valuable for the person to take counter measures. In this paper, we investigate the use of decision analytics methodologies to detect stress. We present a new feature selection method based on the principal component analysis (PCA), compare three feature selection methods, and evaluate five information fusion methods for stress detection. A driving stress data set created by the MIT Media lab is used to evaluate the relative performance of these methods. Our study show that the …

Computing The Grounded Semantics In All The Subgraphs Of An Argumentation Framework: An Empirical Evaluation, Pierpaolo Dondio
Computing The Grounded Semantics In All The Subgraphs Of An Argumentation Framework: An Empirical Evaluation, Pierpaolo Dondio
Articles
Given an argumentation framework – with a finite set of arguments and the attack relation identifying the graph – we study how the grounded labelling of a generic argument a varies in all the subgraphs of . Since this is an intractable problem of above-polynomial complexity, we present two non-naïve algorithms to find the set of all the subgraphs where the grounded semantic assigns to argument a specific label . We report the results of a series of empirical tests over graphs of increasing complexity. The value of researching the above problem is two-fold. First, knowing how an argument behaves …

The Standardized Nomenclature of Medicine -- Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT -- further abbreviated as SCT) has been endorsed as a premier clinical terminology by many national and international organizations. The US Government has chosen SCT to play a significant role in its initiative to promote Electronic Health Record (EH R) country-wide. However, there is evidence suggesting that, at the moment, SCT is not optimally modeled for its intended use by healthcare practitioners. There is a need to perform quality assurance (QA) of SCT to help expedite its use as a reference terminology for clinical purposes as planned for EH R …
Pre-Distribution Scheme For Data Sharing In Mobile Cloud Computing, Chaitanya Vemulapalli, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Mark Linderman
Pre-Distribution Scheme For Data Sharing In Mobile Cloud Computing, Chaitanya Vemulapalli, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Mark Linderman
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
computing gave rise to a new computing paradigm called Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) that gives the flexibility to access information and computing resources anywhere anytime. In many applications, mobile nodes capture images/video clips and exchange with other mobile peers (on demand) and use local access points for efficient smooth distribution of information in the wireless network. In such a situation, a three-way data management and dissemination technique is helpful because it provides both data management and distribution at different levels of granularity. The main motivation of this paper is that we seek a balance between accessing information from a remote …
Monster In The Woods—Adventures In Puppetry, Brian R. Mcnair, Kelly Loosli
Monster In The Woods—Adventures In Puppetry, Brian R. Mcnair, Kelly Loosli
Journal of Undergraduate Research
It was supposed to be simple, a quick project, inexpensive, from the gut, a chance to experience a puppet production from beginning to end, learn from every step, and come away with an intricate knowledge of film, puppetry, green screen, and post production; a project meant to last six months: tops. But as other people became involved, idea leading to idea and way onto way it didn’t take long for my simple puppet show to turn into its namesake: a monster in the woods.
Graphstore: A Distributed Graph Storage System For Big Data Networks, Venkataswamy Martha
Graphstore: A Distributed Graph Storage System For Big Data Networks, Venkataswamy Martha
Theses and Dissertations
Networks, such as social networks, are a universal solution for modeling complex problems in real time, especially in the Big Data community. While previous studies have attempted to enhance network processing algorithms, none have paved a path for the development of a persistent storage system. The proposed solution, Graphstore, provides an efficient and scalable graph management system for giant networks using Hadoop, a widely accepted distributed big data processing framework. Unlike the existing graph processing systems on Hadoop, the GraphStore offers a persistency through which query processing modules can be implemented. There arise several challenges with this study, such as …
Dynamical System Approach To System Call Analysis For Host Based Intrusion Detection, Nitin Vishwanath Kanaskar
Dynamical System Approach To System Call Analysis For Host Based Intrusion Detection, Nitin Vishwanath Kanaskar
Theses and Dissertations
Worms and remote intrusions often utilize code injection to be successful. Execution of the injected code is crucial to exploit a vulnerability in an application. This proposal introduces a different approach than the previous approaches to system call analysis. System call layer reflects significant behavioral semantics of an application as it signifies change of application privileges to kernel mode. We introduce some of the well-established techniques and formalisms of Dynamical System Theory into analysis of application behavior via system calls analysis. We accept a program as a blackbox dynamical system whose internals are not known but whose output - system …
An Abstraction Of The Java Language’S Awt Library, Leanne Isaac, Dr. Phillip J. Windley
An Abstraction Of The Java Language’S Awt Library, Leanne Isaac, Dr. Phillip J. Windley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As Java, a new language developed for the Internet, has continued to grow in popularity, the face of the World Wide Web is changing. Now, once static HTML pages are lined with moving animation and sounds. While the possibilities that Java brings to the Internet are practically endless, creating these applications is not a simple task for the everyday Internet user who has not had experience in advance computer programming. With this fact in mind, I thought that if it were possible to create a simple and direct language that could be sent to a program which translated it into …
Speculative Evaluation In Particle Swarm Optimization, Matthew Gardner, Dr. Kevin Seppi
Speculative Evaluation In Particle Swarm Optimization, Matthew Gardner, Dr. Kevin Seppi
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Optimization problems are ubiquitous in our modern world. Businesses such as Google need to decide where to place ads, scientists need to fit models to data, and airlines need to schedule their flights. All of these problems are optimization problems, and optimization techniques can be used to find solutions. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a relatively new optimization technique that draws on ideas from the sociology of flocking birds. It was originally developed for use on a single machine, and attempts at modifying the algorithm to run in parallel are still quite preliminary. However, the problems people want to solve …

Evaluation Of Sql Performance Tuning Features In Oracle Database Software, Katarzyna Marta Dobies
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Timely access to data is one of the most important requirements of database management systems. Having access to data in acceptable time is crucial for efficient decision making. Tuning inefficient SQL is one of the most important elements of enhancing performance of databases. With growing repositories and complexity of underlying data management systems, maintaining decent levels of performance and tuning has become a complicated task. DBMS providers acknowledge this tendency and developed tools and features that simplify the process. DBAs and developers have to make use of these tools in the attempt to provide their companies with stable and efficient …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, new passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags with multimodal sensors and a high on-tag memory is proposed. First, the features preferred on the new passive RFID tags are motivated followed by a detailed description on the design and fabrication of the tags. Next, the performance of the tags in terms of read range is evaluated. The experiments results show that proposed tags have a range of 5.8 meters when all sensors are disabled while the range reduces when sensors are enabled. However, it is demonstrated that the range can be enhanced to 8 meters by using energy …

Word Recognition From Continuous Articulatory Movement Time-Series Data Using Symbolic Representations, Jun Wang, Arvind Balasubramanian, Luis Mojica De La Vega, Jordan R. Green, Ashok Samal, Balakrishnan Prabhakaran
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Although still in experimental stage, articulation-based silent speech interfaces may have significant potential for facilitating oral communication in persons with voice and speech problems. An articulation-based silent speech interface converts articulatory movement information to audible words. The complexity of speech production mechanism (e.g., co-articulation) makes the conversion a formidable problem. In this paper, we reported a novel, real-time algorithm for recognizing words from continuous articulatory movements. This approach differed from prior work in that (1) it focused on word-level, rather than phoneme-level; (2) online segmentation and recognition were conducted at the same time; and (3) a symbolic representation (SAX) was …
Automatically Creating Records From The Extracted Data Fields Of Genealogical Microfilm, Kenneth Martin Tubbs Jr., Dr. David W. Embley
Automatically Creating Records From The Extracted Data Fields Of Genealogical Microfilm, Kenneth Martin Tubbs Jr., Dr. David W. Embley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
A wealth of information is locked up in millions of microfilm documents. The process of extracting and organizing this enormous amount of data is overwhelming. Automated data extraction techniques offer the ability to rapidly and systematically capture this information so that it can be stored and queried in databases. The complete process consists of these steps: convert the hand-written text to ASCII, record the text’s location, classify the text, create records from the classified text, store the records. My research focused on developing data extraction techniques for automating the recognition and creation of genealogical records from the extracted text.

Neural Network Topologies, Michael Rimer, Dr. Tony Martinez
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Neural networks are a statistics-based learning paradigm in which specific acquired data samples are studied to form general rules on how to correctly handle new, unseen data. They have been used to make informed decisions in complex systems, such as predicting stock market trends, controlling robots in unpredictable environments, and performing voice or face recognition.
Proof Tools, Annette Bunker
Proof Tools, Annette Bunker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The field of formal methods uses mathematical proof techniques to help ensure the reliability of computer systems. These proofs are complex enough to warrant the use of a proof tool. Proof tools assist system designers by enforcing logical rules. But in order to reason about designs, we must build a representation of the design within the proof tool.
The Effect Of Displaying Dependencies On Software Maintenance, Timothy D. Shadel, Dr. Peter Biggs
The Effect Of Displaying Dependencies On Software Maintenance, Timothy D. Shadel, Dr. Peter Biggs
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Research has shown that the maintenance of existing software represents about 80% of the total development effort [1]. Up to 50% of a developer’s time may be spent trying to understand the software system [2]. Because maintenance costs are high, any methodology, tool, or training that could help reduce this cost would be a welcome aid to software development companies.

A Forward-Secure Certificate-Based Signature Scheme, Jiguo Li, Huiyun Teng, Xinyu Huang, Yichen Zhang, Jianying Zhou
Faculty Publications
Cryptographic computations are often carried out on insecure devices for which the threat of key exposure raises a serious concern. In an effort to address the key exposure problem, the notion of forward security was first presented by Günther in 1990. In a forward-secure scheme, secret keys are updated at regular periods of time; exposure of the secret key corresponding to a given time period does not enable an adversary to ‘break’ the scheme for any prior time period. In this paper, we first introduce forward security into certificate-based cryptography and define the security model of forward-secure certificate-based signatures (CBSs). …
Low-Profile Wake-Up Radio Mechanism For Resource-Constrained Wireless Devices, Ali Al-Uraiby
Low-Profile Wake-Up Radio Mechanism For Resource-Constrained Wireless Devices, Ali Al-Uraiby
Theses and Dissertations
Achieving low power consumption, size reduction, and space optimization are all challenges in resource constrained wireless devices such as Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) nodes. WSN nodes use duty cycle to improve their power efficiency, and wake-up radio (WUR) is used as a control channel to wake them up. A field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is one of the attractive candidates for WSN devices implementation. A low-profile WUR scheme is proposed and implemented using FPGA to address the challenge of power consumption for resource-constrained wireless devices. First, a new design to partition WUR from the remaining main radio component and data processing …
Removing Points From A Delaunay Tetrahedralization, Nathan Moon, Dr. Bryan S. Morse
Removing Points From A Delaunay Tetrahedralization, Nathan Moon, Dr. Bryan S. Morse
Journal of Undergraduate Research
A set of points in three dimensions can be tetrahedralized, or broken into non-intersecting tetrahedra, in many ways. A Delaunay tetrahedralization of a set of points is a tetrahedralization with the property that the sphere defined by each tetrahedron in the structure does not contain any other points in the structure besides the points defining the tetrahedron. A Delaunay tetrahedralization of a set of points is unique except for the case where more than four points are co-spherical.

The introduction and rise of General Purpose Graphics Computing has significantly impacted parallel and high-performance computing. It has introduced challenges when it comes to distributed computing with GPUs. Current solutions target specifics: specific hardware, specific network topology, a specific level of processing. Those restrictions on GPU computing limit scientists and researchers in various ways. The goal of OpenCUDA+MPI project is to develop a framework that allows researchers and scientists to write a general algorithm without the overhead of worrying about the specifics of the hardware and the cluster it will run against while taking full advantage of parallel and distributed …

A 2-Chain Can Interlock With An Open 10-Chain, Bin Lu, Joseph O'Rourke, Jianyuan K. Zhong
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Abstract. It is an open problem, posed in [3], to determine the minimal k such that an open flexible k-chain can interlock with a flexible 2-chain. It was first established in [5] that there is an open 16-chain in a trapezoid frame that achieves interlocking. This was subsequently improved in [6] to establish interlocking between a 2-chain and an open 11-chain. Here we improve that result once more, establishing interlocking between a 2-chain and a 10-chain. We present arguments that indicate that 10 is likely the minimum.
