Control Of Diesel Engines Mounted On Vehicles In Mobile Cranes Via Can Bus, Muci̇z Özcan, Hi̇dayet Günay
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, the aim was to lift loads that required more force using the infrastructure of existing vehicles. To this end, a truck-mounted diesel engine was selected to be used in mobile crane applications. A control system was designed and implemented to obtain the appropriate hydraulic force by accessing the diesel engine with a controller area network bus via an electronic control unit (ECU). For this purpose, hydraulic pumps to be used to operate the crane were mounted on the selected mobile diesel engine with an ECU. Firms that manufacture cranes in the world produce cranes with infrastructure. This …
A Novel Dynamic Bandwidth Selection Method For Thinning Noisy Point Clouds, Mehmet Öztürk, Zeynep Hasirci
A Novel Dynamic Bandwidth Selection Method For Thinning Noisy Point Clouds, Mehmet Öztürk, Zeynep Hasirci
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we propose a dynamic bandwidth selection method for thinning noisy point clouds into curves. Due to the nonhomogeneous distribution of noise or varying curvature of the data, the thinning procedure requires a dynamically adjusted bandwidth along the curve. On the other hand, the selected local region must be sorted along a suitable direction vector for local curve fitting purposes. The contribution of this paper to the field is 2-folded: first, a normalized eigenvalue analysis-based method is used to determine the best local bandwidth. The second task is getting a good regression line of the local region for …

Compact Microstrip Antenna With Metamaterial For Wideband Applications, Han Xiong, Jing-Song Hong, Ming-Tao Tan, Bing Li
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
An improved metamaterial antenna, with a compact size of 27.8 x 31.9 x 0.794 mm^3, fed by an offset-microstrip line, is proposed. The total size is slightly reduced and the measured impedance bandwidth is 4.08-7.83 GHz for a return loss of \mid S_{11}\mid < -10 dB. Compared with the original patch antenna, the bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 550 MHz broader and has a lower resonant frequency. The simulated gain of the antenna is more than 2 dB, with a peak of about 6 dB at 6.8 GHz. Moreover, the antenna has strong radiation in the horizontal direction for some specific applications within the entire band.
Stopping Spam With Sending Session Verification, Ahmet Baran
Stopping Spam With Sending Session Verification, Ahmet Baran
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Spam has become one of the most significant problems for Internet communication and users today. The traditional filtering methods and signature-based spam blocking systems that have come into prominence recently fall short, as statistics demonstrate that spam further mounts up day after day. In this study, a new method is recommended to block spam mails. In this recommended method, a mail sending session is verified during mail envelope communication by adding small attachments to the simple mail transfer protocol, so spam mails can be blocked before leaving the sender domain or relay machine. Additionally, hijacked user accounts are able to …

Optimal Placement And Sizing Of Distributed Generations In Distribution Systems For Minimizing Losses And Thd_V Using Evolutionary Programming, Aida Fazliana Abdul Kadir, Azah Mohamed, Hussain Shareef, Mohd Zamri Che Wanik
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Growing concerns over environmental impacts, improvement of the overall network conditions, and rebate programs offered by governments have led to an increase in the number of distributed generation (DG) units in commercial and domestic electric power production. However, a large number of DG units in a distribution system may sometimes contribute to high levels of harmonic distortion, even though the emission levels of the individual DG units comply with the harmonic standards. It is known that the nonoptimal size and nonoptimal placement of DG units may lead to high power losses, bad voltage profiles, and harmonic propagations. Therefore, this paper …
Multi-Objective Weighted Sum Approach Model Reduction By Routh-Pade Approximation Using Harmony Search, Hasan Nasiri Soloklo, Malihe Maghfoori Farsangi
Multi-Objective Weighted Sum Approach Model Reduction By Routh-Pade Approximation Using Harmony Search, Hasan Nasiri Soloklo, Malihe Maghfoori Farsangi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A new weighted-sum multiobjective approach is investigated for order reduction based on Routh--Padé approximation, in which the harmony search algorithm is used to optimize the reduced-order model's parameters. In this method, apart from minimizing the errors between a set of subsequent time moments/Markov parameters of the system and those of the model, the error between the singular values of the reduced-order system and those of the original system is minimized. The Routh criterion is applied for specifying the stability conditions. The stability condition is then considered as a constraint in the optimization problem. To present the ability of the proposed …

Ssr Mitigation With Sssc Thanks To Fuzzy Control, Seyed Mohammad Hassan Hosseini, Hadi Samadzadeh, Javad Olamaei, Murtaza Farsadi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper deals with the capability of a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) to attenuate the subsynchronous resonance (SSR). Two well-known controllers are designed, namely a conventional damping controller (CDC) and fuzzy logic damping controller (FLDC). These 2 damping controllers are added to a main control loop of a SSSC operating as a SSR damping controller. It should be noted that, to optimize the parameters of the CDC, a versatile optimization technique is implemented, namely particle swarm optimization (PSO). A comprehensive comparison between the 2 control methods is carried out for different operational conditions. To observe the superior performance of …
Xor-Based Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm For Binary Optimization, Mustafa Servet Kiran, Mesut Gündüz
Xor-Based Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm For Binary Optimization, Mustafa Servet Kiran, Mesut Gündüz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm, which was inspired by the foraging and dance behaviors of real honey bee colonies, was first introduced for solving numerical optimization problems. When the solution space of the optimization problem is binary-structured, the basic ABC algorithm should be modified for solving this class of problems. In this study, we propose XOR-based modification for the solution-updating equation of the ABC algorithm in order to solve binary optimization problems. The proposed method, named binary ABC (binABC), is examined on an uncapacitated facility location problem, which is a pure binary optimization problem, and the results obtained by …

Hybrid Spr Algorithm To Select Predictive Genes For Effectual Cancer Classification, Aruna Sundaram, Nandakishore Lellapalli Venkata, Rajagopalan Sarukai Parthasarathy
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Designing an automated system for classifying DNA microarray data is an extremely challenging problem because of its high dimension and low amount of sample data. In this paper, a hybrid statistical pattern recognition algorithm is proposed to reduce the dimensionality and select the predictive genes for the classification of cancer. Colon cancer gene expression profiles having 62 samples of 2000 genes were used for the experiment. A gene subset of 6 highly informative genes was selected by the algorithm, which provided a classification accuracy of 93.5%.
Minimal Controller Synthesis Algorithms With Output Feedback And Their Generalization, Ata Sevi̇nç
Minimal Controller Synthesis Algorithms With Output Feedback And Their Generalization, Ata Sevi̇nç
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper proposes several improvements in the minimal controller synthesis algorithms, which were developed for a class of nonlinear systems with uncertainties. The major proposition is that only the output feedback is enough to control some nonlinear systems without an observer while the existing algorithms require the complete state feedback. Next, the extended version and the parameter identification technique of the minimal controller synthesis algorithm are combined in a single method estimating some more parameters for some known forms of nonlinearities. This is applicable with or without the improvement of removing the need for using the complete state feedback. It …

Flow Velocity Measurement And Analysis Based On Froth Image Sift Features And Kalman Filter For Froth Flotation, Jinping Liu, Weihua Gui, Zhaohui Tang
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The flow velocity of flotation froth involves important information about the concentrate grade and the mineral recovery. It is significant to maintain the flow velocity of the froth at proper levels to achieve a good production performance in the machine vision-based process monitoring and control. However, the accurate velocity field measurement for the heavily deformed and seriously fragile froth bubbles is still a great challenge. Scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) feature-based image matching provides an effective registration method for deformed objects, but most of the processing time would be wasted on the feature extraction and matching in irrelevant regions of the …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Eye pupil detection systems have become increasingly popular in image processing and computer vision applications in medical systems. In this study, a video-based eye pupil detection system is developed for diagnosing bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a condition in which people experience changes in cognitive processes and abilities, including reduced attentional and executive capabilities and impaired memory. In order to detect these abnormal behaviors, a number of neuropsychological tests are also designed to measure attentional and executive abilities. The system acquires the position and radius information of eye pupils in video sequences using an active contour snake model with an …
On Identifying Critical Nuggets Of Information During Classification Task, David Sathiaraj
On Identifying Critical Nuggets Of Information During Classification Task, David Sathiaraj
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In large databases, there may exist critical nuggets - small collections of records or instances that contain domain-specific important information. This information can be used for future decision making such as labeling of critical, unlabeled data records and improving classification results by reducing false positive and false negative errors. In recent years, data mining efforts have focussed on pattern and outlier detection methods. However, not much effort has been dedicated to finding critical nuggets within a data set. This work introduces the idea of critical nuggets, proposes an innovative domain-independent method to measure criticality, suggests a heuristic to reduce the …

A Hybrid Framework Of Iterative Mapreduce And Mpi For Molecular Dynamics Applications, Shuju Bai
A Hybrid Framework Of Iterative Mapreduce And Mpi For Molecular Dynamics Applications, Shuju Bai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Developing platforms for large scale data processing has been a great interest to scientists. Hadoop is a widely used computational platform which is a fault-tolerant distributed system for data storage due to HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System) and performs fault-tolerant distributed data processing in parallel due to MapReduce framework. It is quite often that actual computations require multiple MapReduce cycles, which needs chained MapReduce jobs. However, Design by Hadoop is poor in addressing problems with iterative structures. In many iterative problems, some invariant data is required by every MapReduce cycle. The same data is uploaded to Hadoop file system in …

Exploring The Learnability Of Numeric Datasets, Di Lin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
When doing classification, it has often been observed that datasets may exhibit different levels of difficulty with respect to how accurately they can be classified. That is, there are some datasets which can be classified very accurately by many classification algorithms, and there also exist some other datasets that no classifier can classify them with high accuracy. Based on this observation, we try to address the following problems: a)what are the factors that make a dataset easy or difficult to be accurately classified? b) how to use such factors to predict the difficulties of unclassified datasets? and c) how to …
Toward Digitizing The Human Experience : A New Resource For Natural Language Processing, Jerry Scott Weltman
Toward Digitizing The Human Experience : A New Resource For Natural Language Processing, Jerry Scott Weltman
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A long-standing goal of Artificial Intelligence is to program computers that understand natural language. A basic obstacle is that computers lack the common sense that even small children acquire simply by experiencing life, and no one has devised a way to program this experience into a computer. This dissertation presents a methodology and proof-of-concept software system that enables non-experts, with some training, to create simple experiences. For the purposes of this dissertation, an experience is a series of time-ordered comic frames, annotated with the changing intentional and physical states of the characters and objects in each frame. Each frame represents …

Clustering Of Search Trajectory And Its Application To Parameter Tuning, Linda Lindawati, Hoong Chuin Lau, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper is concerned with automated classification of Combinatorial Optimization Problem instances for instance-specific parameter tuning purpose. We propose the CluPaTra Framework, a generic approach to CLUster instances based on similar PAtterns according to search TRAjectories and apply it on parameter tuning. The key idea is to use the search trajectory as a generic feature for clustering problem instances. The advantage of using search trajectory is that it can be obtained from any local-search based algorithm with small additional computation time. We explore and compare two different search trajectory representations, two sequence alignment techniques (to calculate similarities) as well as …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cybersecurity is a national priority in this big data era. Because of negative externalities and the resulting lack of economic incentives, companies often underinvest in security controls, despite government and industry recommendations. Although many existing studies on security have explored technical solutions, only a few have looked at the economic motivations. To fill the gap, we propose an approach to increase the incentives of organizations to address security problems. Specifically, we utilize and process existing security vulnerability data, derive explicit security performance information, and disclose the information as feedback to organizations and the public. We regularly release information on the …
