Real-Time Implementation Of An Amplitude-Locked Loop: A Validation On The Dspace Ds1006-Based Platform, Jora Mangala Gonda, Sumam Sarah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The extraction of harmonics and/or the fundamental from a distorted waveform is an important process in the implementation of custom-power devices. Several schemes towards this have been proposed in the past. Among these, the algorithms based on synchronous (with respect to the supply voltages) extraction (both in phase and amplitude) have certain established advantages over the others. Amplitude-locked loops (ALLs) have been in use in signal-communication systems but are limited to sinusoidal inputs. There is a need for fast and rugged algorithms to synchronously extract harmonics and/or the fundamental from a distorted waveform in many power system applications. In this …

Image Pattern Recognition Technique For The Classification Of Multiple Power Quality Disturbances, Brahmadesam Viswanathan Krishna, Baskaran Kalaiperumal

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In a practical power system, a power quality (PQ) event often consists of various types of disturbances occurring at the same time. However, most of the existing techniques are trained to classify single disturbances, and hence have very limited usage in classifying real-time data. This work proposes a novel technique to automatically detect and classify multiple disturbances that coexist in PQ monitoring data. The data obtained from PQ monitors are represented in the form of 2-dimensional (2D) images. This 2D data visualization has significant benefits, in that each type of disturbance produces a different type of edge in the image; …

Low-Cost And Power-Efficient Thread Collision Detection Scheme For Shared Caches In A Real-Time Multithreaded Embedded Processor, Emre Özer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper addresses an important issue in a real-time multithreaded embedded processor where several active hardware threads share the critical resources such as caches in the processor. Thread interferences or collisions could lead to severe performance degradations on the real-time threads. Although the cache interference issue on real-time multithreaded processors has been studied before, no cost-effective and simpler hardware solutions were proposed to maintain the single thread performance of the real-time thread while still letting the low-priority threads progress. A novel technique called collision tag is proposed to address these issues. Progressively, the collision tag scheme can be reduced into …

Novel Control Strategy For Voltage Source Converters Based On Energy Function, Sanaz Namayan Tavana, Gevork Gharehpetian, Mehrdad Abedi, Ali Bidadfar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes a nonlinear control strategy for pulse-width modulated voltage source converters (VSCs). A passivity-based approach, resulting from the Lyapunov direct method, is presented for designing an effective nonlinear VSC controller to improve their dynamic behaviors under perturbed conditions. The differential equations of the converters are obtained and then transformed into a d-q frame. Considering the nonlinearity of the transformed equations, the Lyapunov direct method is utilized to find a solution to improve the transient response. The time derivative of the Lyapunov function guarantees that increasing its dissipative term will result in the trajectory of the VSC system returning …

A Blind Digital Signature Scheme Using Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm, İsmai̇l Bütün, Mehmet Demi̇rer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, we propose a blind digital signature (BDS) scheme based on the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm that increases the performance significantly. The security of our scheme is based on the difficulty of the elliptic curve discrete algorithm problem. Therefore, it offers much smaller key lengths for the desired security levels, along with much faster cryptographic processes, leading to fewer hardware and software requirements. According to our simulation results, the relative performance improvement of our proposed BDS scheme is up to 96% when compared with previously proposed schemes.

On-Line Self-Learning Pid Controller Design Of Sssc Using Self-Recurrent Wavelet Neural Networks, Soheil Ganjefar, Mojtaba Alizadeh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Conventionally, FACTS devices employ a proportional-integral (PI) controller as a supplementary controller. However, the conventional PI controller has many disadvantages. The present paper aims to propose an on-line self-learning PI-derivative (PID) controller design of a static synchronous series compensator for power system stability enhancement and to overcome the PI controller problems. Unlike the PI controllers, the proposed PID controller has a local nature because of its powerful adaption process, which is based on the back-propagation (BP) algorithm that is carried out through an adaptive self-recurrent wavelet neural network identifier (ASRWNNI). In fact, the PID controller parameters are updated in on-line …

Multiobjective Differential Evolution-Based Performance Optimization For Switched Reluctance Motor Drives, Hedi Yahia, Noureddine Liouane, Rachid Dhifaoui

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The simple structure, low manufacturing cost, rugged behavior, high torque per unit volume, and wide torque-speed range make a switched reluctance motor (SRM) very attractive for industrial applications. However, these advantages are overshadowed by its inherent high torque ripple, acoustic noise, and difficulty to control. The controlled parameters in SRM drives can be selected as the turn-on angle, the turn-off angle, and the current reference. This paper investigates the problem of optimal control parameters considering the maximum average torque, minimum copper losses, and minimum torque ripple as the main objectives in SRM drives. The use of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) to …

In order to indicate the severity of the contingency, 2 performance indices, namely the line flow performance index and voltage performance index, are calculated. An interior point method is applied as a nonlinear programming solver to handle such nonconvex optimization problems, while the objective function includes the costs of the new transmission lines as well as the …

Complexity Reduction Of Rbf Multiuser Detector For Ds-Cdma Using A Genetic Algorithm, Mustafa Uğur Torun, Damla Gürkan Kuntalp Jan 2013

Complexity Reduction Of Rbf Multiuser Detector For Ds-Cdma Using A Genetic Algorithm, Mustafa Uğur Torun, Damla Gürkan Kuntalp

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The optimal receiver for detecting direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) signals suffers from computational complexity that increases exponentially with the number of users. Several suboptimal multiuser detectors (MUDs) have been proposed to overcome this problem. Due to the nonlinear nature of the decision boundary of the optimal receiver, it is known that nonlinear receivers outperform linear receivers. Radial basis function (RBF) MUD is a nonlinear suboptimal receiver that can perfectly approximate this decision boundary and it needs no training since it is fully determined when the spreading codes of all users and the channel impulse response (CIR) are …

Comparison Study Of Computational Parameter Values Between Lrn And Narx In Identifying Nonlinear Systems, Farah Hani Nordin, Farrukh Hafiz Nagi, Aidil Azwin Zainul Abidin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

To determine the nonlinear autoregressive model with exogenous inputs (NARX) parameter values is not an easy task, even though NARX is reported to successfully identify nonlinear systems. Apart from the activation functions, number of layers, layer size, learning rate, and number of epochs, the number of delays at the input and at the feedback loop need to also be determined. The layer recurrent network (LRN) is seen to have the potential to outperform NARX. However, not many papers have reported on using the LRN to identify nonlinear systems. Therefore, it is the aim of this paper to investigate and analyze …

Capability-Based Task Allocation In Emergency-Response Environments: A Coalition-Formation Approach, Afsaneh Fatemi, Kamran Zamanifar, Naser Nematbakhsh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper addresses coalition formation, based on agent capabilities, centered on task allocation in emergency-response environments (EREs). EREs are environments that need fast task completion as their main requirement. We propose a team-based organization model, based on an existing organization model for adaptive complex systems. The model has some key characteristics that are beneficial for EREs: agents act in dynamic, open domains; agents collaborate in completing group tasks; agents may have similar types of capabilities, but at different levels; tasks need different agent capabilities, at collective different levels; and agents are supervised in a partially decentralized manner. We formulate task …
