Risk Management Of Email And Internet Use In The Workplace, John Ruhnka, Windham E. Loopesko

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The article surveys the changing risk environment for corporations from their employees’ electronic communications. It identifies the types of liabilities that corporations can incur from such employee communications. It discusses the objectives of corporate internet use policies and the types of provisions such policies should contain. It suggests an alternative risk-based approach to corporate acceptable use policies instead of a traditional “laundry list” of internet use prohibitions.

Analysis Of A Second Hand Google Mini Search Appliance, Stephen Larson

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Information and the technological advancements for which mankind develops with regards to its storage has increased tremendously over the past few decades. As the total amount of data stored rapidly increases in conjunction with the amount of widely available computer-driven devices being used, solutions are being developed to better harness this data (LaTulippe, 2011). One of these solutions is commonly known as a search appliance. Search appliances have been used in e-discovery for several years. The Google Mini Search Appliance (Mini) has not only been used for e-discovery, but for indexing and searching internal documents. To accomplish these tasks, search …

System-Generated Digital Forensic Evidence In Graphic Design Applications, Enos Mabuto, Hein Venter Jan 2013

System-Generated Digital Forensic Evidence In Graphic Design Applications, Enos Mabuto, Hein Venter

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Graphic design applications are often used for the editing and design of digital art. The same applications can be used for creating counterfeit documents such as identity documents (IDs), driver’s licences, passports, etc. However, the use of any graphic design application leaves behind traces of digital information that can be used during a digital forensic investigation. Current digital forensic tools examine a system to find digital evidence, but they do not examine a system specifically for the creating of counterfeit documents created through the use of graphic design applications. The paper in hand reviews the system-generated digital forensic evidence gathered …

A Swarm Of Salesmen: Algorithmic Approaches To Multiagent Modeling, Alexandre Amlie-Wolf Jan 2013

A Swarm Of Salesmen: Algorithmic Approaches To Multiagent Modeling, Alexandre Amlie-Wolf

Honors Papers

This honors thesis describes the algorithmic abstraction of a problem modeling a swarm of Mars rovers, where many "agents" must together achieve a goal. The algorithmic formulation of this problem is based on the traveling salesman problem (TSP), and so in this thesis I offer a review of the mathematical technique of linear programming in the context of its application to the TSP, an overview of some variations of the TSP and algorithms for approximating and solving them, and formulations without solutions of two novel TSP variations which are useful for modeling the original problem.

Group Developed Weighing Matrices, K. T. Arasu, Jeffrey R. Hollon Jan 2013

Group Developed Weighing Matrices, K. T. Arasu, Jeffrey R. Hollon

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A weighing matrix is a square matrix whose entries are 1, 0 or −1, such that the matrix times its transpose is some integer multiple of the identity matrix. We examine the case where these matrices are said to be devel- oped by an abelian group. Through a combination of extending previous results and by giving explicit constructions we will answer the question of existence for 318 such matrices of order and weight both below 100. At the end, we are left with 98 open cases out of a possible 1,022. Further, some of the new results provide insight into …

Coupling Numerical Simulation And Pattern Recognition To Model Production And Evaluate Carbon Dioxide Injection In Shale Gas Reservoir, Amirmasoud Kalantari-Dahaghi Jan 2013

Coupling Numerical Simulation And Pattern Recognition To Model Production And Evaluate Carbon Dioxide Injection In Shale Gas Reservoir, Amirmasoud Kalantari-Dahaghi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Massive multi-cluster, multi-stage hydraulic fractures have significantly increased the complexity of the flow behavior in shale. This has translated into multiple challenges in the modeling of production from shale wells.

Most commonly used numerical techniques for modeling production from shale wells are Explicit Hydraulic Fracture (EHF) and Stimulated Reservoir Volume (SRV). Model setup for the EHF technique is long and laborious and its implementation is computationally expensive, such that it becomes impractical to model beyond a single pad. On the other hand, identifying the extent and conductivity of SRV is a challenging proposition. SRV technique is commonly used to simplify …

Security Analysis Of A Cyber Physical System : A Car Example, Jason Madden

Masters Theses

"Deeply embedded Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) are infrastructures that have significant cyber and physical components that interact with each other in complex ways. These interactions can violate a system's security policy, leading to the leakage of rights and unintended information flow. This thesis will explore information flow as it uses a public channel. In order to exemplify the use of the public channel, a vehicle being composed of the computer system and its operators will show how information is disclosed to an observer. The example is made up of a vehicle traveling across some terrain with an observer watching the …

Search-Based Model Summarization, Lokesh Krishna Ravichandran Jan 2013

Search-Based Model Summarization, Lokesh Krishna Ravichandran

Masters Theses

"Large systems are complex and consist of numerous components and interactions between the components. Hence managing such large systems is a cumbersome and time consuming task. Large systems are usually described at the model level. But the large number of components in such models makes it difficult to modify. As a consequence, developers need a solution to rapidly detect which model components to revise. Effective solution is to generate a model summary. Although existing techniques are powerful enough to provide good summaries based on lexical information (relevant terms), they do not make use of structural information (component structure) well. In …

Hybridizing And Applying Computational Intelligence Techniques, Jeffery Scott Shelburg Jan 2013

Hybridizing And Applying Computational Intelligence Techniques, Jeffery Scott Shelburg

Masters Theses

"As computers are increasingly relied upon to perform tasks of increasing complexity affecting many aspects of society, it is imperative that the underlying computational methods performing the tasks have high performance in terms of effectiveness and scalability. A common solution employed to perform such complex tasks are computational intelligence (CI) techniques. CI techniques use approaches influenced by nature to solve problems in which traditional modeling approaches fail due to impracticality, intractability, or mathematical ill-posedness. While CI techniques can perform considerably better than traditional modeling approaches when solving complex problems, the scalability performance of a given CI technique alone is not …

Secure Design Defects Detection And Correction, Wenquan Wang Jan 2013

Secure Design Defects Detection And Correction, Wenquan Wang

Masters Theses

"Bad design and software defects often make source codes hard to understand and lead to maintenance difficulties. In order to detect and fix such defects, researchers have systematically investigated these issues and designed different effective algorithms to tackle the problems. However, most of these methods need source codes/models for defect detection and correction. Commercial companies, like banks, may not be willing to provide their source models due to data security. Therefore, it is a huge challenge to detect software detects by a consulting company as well as to keep source models confidential. This thesis analyze security issues in existing approaches …

Efficient Integrity Verification Of Replicated Data In Cloud, Raghul Mukundan Jan 2013

Efficient Integrity Verification Of Replicated Data In Cloud, Raghul Mukundan

Masters Theses

"The cloud computing is an emerging model in which computing infrastructure resources are provided as a service over the Internet. Data owners can outsource their data by remotely storing them in the cloud and enjoy on-demand high quality services from a shared pool of configurable computing resources. By using these data storage services, the data owners can relieve the burden of local data storage and maintenance. However, since data owners and the cloud servers are not in the same trusted domain, the outsourced data may be at risk as the cloud server may no longer be fully trusted. Therefore, data …

Women Authors Of Technical Writing Textbooks From 1923 To 1973, Melissa Nicole Wampler

Masters Theses

"The published histories of technical writing textbooks do not usually include many women-authored textbooks. To find out why women-authored textbooks have been marginalized in these pedagogical histories, I selected seven women-authored textbooks and four men-authored textbooks published from 1923 to 1973, investigated the backgrounds of the authors and key features of their textbooks, and used the collected data to compare the women-authored textbooks to the men-authored textbooks. I was not able to find any reason why the women-authored textbooks have been or should be marginalized in histories of technical writing textbooks; however, my study had several limitations. My thesis begins …

Sybil Detection In Vehicular Networks, Muhammad Ibrahim Almutaz Jan 2013

Sybil Detection In Vehicular Networks, Muhammad Ibrahim Almutaz

Masters Theses

"A Sybil attack is one where an adversary assumes multiple identities with the purpose of defeating an existing reputation system. When Sybil attacks are launched in vehicular networks, an added challenge in detecting malicious nodes is mobility that makes it increasingly difficult to tie a node to the location of attacks. In this thesis, we present an innovative protocol for Sybil detection in vehicular networks. Considering that vehicular networks are cyber-physical systems integrating cyber and physical components, our technique exploits well grounded results in the physical (i.e., transportation) domain to tackle the Sybil problem in the cyber domain. Compared to …

Octree-Based Indexing For 3d Point Clouds Within An Oracle Spatial Dbms, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, Abu Saleh Mohammad Mosa, Debra Laefer, Michela Bertolotto

Articles

A large proportion of today’s digital data has a spatial component. The storage and effective 10 management of such data poses particular challenges. Nowhere is this truer than with Light De-11 tection and Ranging (LiDAR), where datasets of even small geographic areas may contain sever-12 al hundred millions points. Currently available spatial information systems do not provide suita-13 ble support for 3D data. As a consequence, while a specific system can be used to store the data, 14 another has to be used to process it. Typically several software applications are used to analyze 15 and process LiDAR data, requiring …

Using Semi-Supervised Classifiers For Credit Scoring, Kenneth Kennedy, Brian Mac Namee, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2013

Using Semi-Supervised Classifiers For Credit Scoring, Kenneth Kennedy, Brian Mac Namee, Sarah Jane Delany

Articles

In credit scoring, low-default portfolios are those for which very little default history exists. This makes it problematic for financial institutions to estimate a reliable probability of a customer defaulting on a loan. Banking regulation (Basel II Capital Accord), and best practice, however, necessitate an accurate and valid estimate of the probability of default. In this article the suitability of semi-supervised one-class classification algorithms as a solution to the lowdefault portfolio problem are evaluated. The performance of one-class classification algorithms is compared with the performance of supervised two-class classification algorithms. This study also investigates the suitability of oversampling, which is …

A Comparative Study Of The Effect Of Sensor Noise On Activity Recognition Models, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

To provide a better understanding of the relative strengths of Machine Learning based Activity Recognition methods, in this paper we present a comparative analysis of the robustness of three popular methods with respect to sensor noise. Specifically we evaluate the robustness of Naive Bayes classifier, Support Vector Machine, and Random Forest based activity recognition models in three cases which span sensor errors from dead to poorly calibrated sensors. Test data is partially synthesized from a recently annotated activity recognition corpus which includes both interleaved activities and a range of both temporally long and short activities. Results demonstrate that the relative …

An Experience-Driven Pedagogy For The Instruction Of Software Testing In Computer Science, Christopher Duane Brown Jan 2013

An Experience-Driven Pedagogy For The Instruction Of Software Testing In Computer Science, Christopher Duane Brown

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

In the realm of computer programming, the experience of writing a program is used to reinforce concepts and evaluate ability. This research uses three case studies to evaluate the introduction of testing through Kolb's Experiential Learning Model (ELM). We then analyze the impact of those testing experiences to determine methods for improving future courses.

The first testing experience that students encounter are unit test reports in their early courses. This course demonstrates that automating and improving feedback can provide more ELM iterations. The JUnit Generation (JUG) tool also provided a positive experience for the instructor by reducing the overall workload. …

Using Genetic Algorithms To Find Cellular Automata Rule Sets Capable Of Generating Maze-Like Game Level Layouts, Andrew Pech Jan 2013

Using Genetic Algorithms To Find Cellular Automata Rule Sets Capable Of Generating Maze-Like Game Level Layouts, Andrew Pech

Theses : Honours

The video game industry has grown substantially over the last decade and the quality of video games has also been advancing rapidly. In recent years, video games have been advancing to a point that the increased time required to manually create their content is making this process too costly. This has made procedural content generation a desirable option for game developers due to its speed of generating content, and the variety of content that a single PCG method can produced.

The main purpose of this dissertation is to detail a new approach to procedurally generate video game level layouts, and …

Introduction To Neutrosophic Measure, Neutrosophic Integral, And Neutrosophic Probability, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2013

Introduction To Neutrosophic Measure, Neutrosophic Integral, And Neutrosophic Probability, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book, we introduce for the first time the notions of neutrosophic measure and neutrosophic integral, and we develop the 1995 notion of neutrosophic probability. We present many practical examples.

It is possible to define the neutrosophic measure and consequently the neutrosophic integral and neutrosophic probability in many ways, because there are various types of indeterminacies, depending on the problem we need to solve. Neutrosophics study the indeterminacy. Indeterminacy is different from randomness. It can be caused by physical space materials and type of construction, by items involved in the space, etc.

Balancing Human And Machine Contributions In Human Computation Systems, R. Jordan Crouser, Alvitta Ottley, Remco Chang Jan 2013

Balancing Human And Machine Contributions In Human Computation Systems, R. Jordan Crouser, Alvitta Ottley, Remco Chang

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Many interesting and successful human computation systems leverage the complementary computational strengths of both humans and machines to solve these problems. In this chapter, we examine Human Computation as a type of Human-Computer Collaboration—collaboration involving at least one human and at least one computational agent. We discuss recent advances in the open area of function allocation, and explore how to balance the contributions of humans and machines in computational systems. We then explore how human-computer collaborative strategies can be used to solve problems that are difficult or computationally infeasible for computers or humans alone.
