Scene Understanding For Real Time Processing Of Queries Over Big Data Streaming Video, Alexander Aved Jan 2013

Scene Understanding For Real Time Processing Of Queries Over Big Data Streaming Video, Alexander Aved

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With heightened security concerns across the globe and the increasing need to monitor, preserve and protect infrastructure and public spaces to ensure proper operation, quality assurance and safety, numerous video cameras have been deployed. Accordingly, they also need to be monitored effectively and efficiently. However, relying on human operators to constantly monitor all the video streams is not scalable or cost effective. Humans can become subjective, fatigued, even exhibit bias and it is difficult to maintain high levels of vigilance when capturing, searching and recognizing events that occur infrequently or in isolation. These limitations are addressed in the Live Video …

Applying Combinatorial Testing To Systems With A Complex Input Space, Mehra Nouroz Borazjany Jan 2013

Applying Combinatorial Testing To Systems With A Complex Input Space, Mehra Nouroz Borazjany

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Combinatorial testing, which has been shown very effective in fault detection, is a testing strategy that applies the theory of combinatorial design to test software programs. Given a program under test with k parameters, t-way combinatorial testing requires all combinations of values of t (out of k) parameters be covered at least once, where t is usually a small integer. Combinatorial testing can significantly reduce the cost of testing while increasing its effectiveness.Input space modeling is an important step in combinatorial testing. The input space of a subject program must be modeled before combinatorial testing can be applied to it. …

Accelerated Data Delivery Architecture, Michael L. Grecol Jan 2013

Accelerated Data Delivery Architecture, Michael L. Grecol

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This paper introduces the Accelerated Data Delivery Architecture (ADDA). ADDA establishes a framework to distribute transactional data and control consistency to achieve fast access to data, distributed scalability and non-blocking concurrency control by using a clean declarative interface. It is designed to be used with web-based business applications. This framework uses a combination of traditional Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) combined with a distributed Not Only SQL (NoSQL) database and a browser-based database. It uses a single physical and conceptual database schema designed for a standard RDBMS driven application. The design allows the architect to assign consistency levels to entities …

Sellers Continue To Give Away Confidential Information On Second Hand Memory Cards Sold In Australia, Patryk Szewczyk, Nikki Robins, Krishnun Sansurooah

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Second hand storage devices can be treasure troves of confidential data. This study investigated the remnant data on second hand memory cards that were purchased through Australian second hand auction websites throughout 2013. Memory cards continue to increase in capacity and are used in both smart phones and tablet computers as persistent storage. During this study a total of 140 second hand memory cards were purchased throughout 2013. Each memory card had its data recovered and subsequently analysed. The results show that sellers are sending memory cards with no evidence of erasure; poor attempts to erase data; or simply asking …

Patterns And Patter - An Investigation Into Ssh Activity Using Kippo Honeypots, Craig Valli, Priya Rabadia, Andrew Woodward

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

This is an investigation of the activity detected on three honeypots that utilise the Kippo SSH honeypot system on VPS servers all on the same C class address. The systems ran on identical software bases and hardware configurations. The results are over the period 21st March 2013 until Tuesday 04 June 2013. The initial analysis covered in this paper examines behaviours and patterns detected of the attacking entities. The attack patterns were not consistent and there was large disparity in numbers and magnitude of attacks on all hosts. Some of these issues are explored in the paper.

Uncertain Congestion Games With Assorted Human Agent Populations , Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Shih-Fen Cheng Jan 2013

Uncertain Congestion Games With Assorted Human Agent Populations , Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Congestion games model a wide variety of real-world resource congestion problems, such as selfish network routing, traffic route guidance in congested areas, taxi fleet optimization and crowd movement in busy areas. However, existing research in congestion games assumes: (a) deterministic movement of agents between resources; and (b) perfect rationality (i.e. maximizing their own expected value) of all agents. Such assumptions are not reasonable in dynamic domains where decision support has to be provided to humans. For instance, in optimizing the performance of a taxi fleet serving a city, movement of taxis can be involuntary or nondeterministic (decided by the specific …

Neural Network-Based Optimal Control Of Mobile Robot Formations With Reduced Information Exchange, Travis Dierks, Bryan Brenner, S. Jagannathan Jan 2013

Neural Network-Based Optimal Control Of Mobile Robot Formations With Reduced Information Exchange, Travis Dierks, Bryan Brenner, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel formation control scheme for mobile robots is introduced in the context of leader-follower framework with reduced communication exchange. The dynamical controller inputs for the robots are approximated from nonlinear optimal control techniques in order to track the designed control velocities generated by the kinematic controller. The proposed nonlinear optimal control technique, referred to as adaptive dynamic programming, uses neural networks (NNs) to solve the optimal formation control problem in discrete time in the presence of unknown internal dynamics and a known control coefficient matrix. A modification to the follower's kinematic controller is used to allow the desired formation …

A Comparative Analysis Of Open Source Storage Area Networks With Esxi 5.1, Robert M. Trinkle

Open Access Theses

Storage Area Networks have increased in popularity with the advancement of virtualization technologies. SANs consist of a central repository of hard disks allowing multiple clients to access and share data over a computer network. In recent years, multiple commercial and open source SAN technologies have been introduced to the market. Unlike commercial products, the open source SAN technologies lack formal documentation and research making implementation best practices scarce. This research analyzed the performance of different SAN architectures and implementation strategies. In addition, this paper expands upon previous research by using current hardware and software technologies. The test results of prominent …

Study On The Performance Of Tcp Over 10gbps High Speed Networks, Cheng Cui Jan 2013

Study On The Performance Of Tcp Over 10gbps High Speed Networks, Cheng Cui

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Internet traffic is expected to grow phenomenally over the next five to ten years. To cope with such large traffic volumes, high-speed networks are expected to scale to capacities of terabits-per-second and beyond. Increasing the role of optics for packet forwarding and transmission inside the high-speed networks seems to be the most promising way to accomplish this capacity scaling. Unfortunately, unlike electronic memory, it remains a formidable challenge to build even a few dozen packets of integrated all-optical buffers. On the other hand, many high-speed networks depend on the TCP/IP protocol for reliability which is typically implemented in software and …

Program Analysis : Termination Proofs For Linear Simple Loops, Hongyi Chen Jan 2013

Program Analysis : Termination Proofs For Linear Simple Loops, Hongyi Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Termination proof synthesis for simple loops, i.e., loops with only conjoined constraints in the loop guard and variable updates in the loop body, is the building block of termination analysis, as well as liveness analysis, for large complex imperative systems. In particular, we consider a subclass of simple loops which contain only linear constraints in the loop guard and linear updates in the loop body. We call them Linear Simple Loops (LSLs). LSLs are particularly interesting because most loops in practice are indeed linear; more importantly, since we allow the update statements to handle nondeterminism, LSLs are expressive enough to …

On Identifying And Analyzing Significant Nodes In Protein-Protein Interaction Networks, Rohan Khazanchi, Kathryn Dempsey Cooper, Ishwor Thapa, Hesham Ali

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Network theory has been used for modeling biological data as well as social networks, transportation logistics, business transcripts, and many other types of data sets. Identifying important features/parts of these networks for a multitude of applications is becoming increasingly significant as the need for big data analysis techniques grows. When analyzing a network of protein-protein interactions (PPIs), identifying nodes of significant importance can direct the user toward biologically relevant network features. In this work, we propose that a node of structural importance in a network model can correspond to a biologically vital or significant property. This relationship between topological and …

On Mining Biological Signals Using Correlation Networks, Kathryn Dempsey Cooper, Ishwor Thapa, Claudia Cortes, Zack Eriksen, Dhundy Raj Bastola, Hesham Ali Jan 2013

On Mining Biological Signals Using Correlation Networks, Kathryn Dempsey Cooper, Ishwor Thapa, Claudia Cortes, Zack Eriksen, Dhundy Raj Bastola, Hesham Ali

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Correlation networks have been used in biological networks to analyze and model high-throughput biological data, such as gene expression from microarray or RNA-seq assays. Typically in biological network modeling, structures can be mined from these networks that represent biological functions; for example, a cluster of proteins in an interactome can represent a protein complex. In correlation networks built from high-throughput gene expression data, it has often been speculated or even assumed that clusters represent sets of genes that are coregulated. This research aims to validate this concept using network systems biology and data mining by identification of correlation network clusters …

A Method For Ontology-Based Semantic Relatedness Measurement, Görkem Gi̇ray, Murat Osman Ünalir

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

There are many methods having different approaches for assessing similarity and relatedness and they are used in many application areas, including web service discovery, invocation and composition, word sense disambiguation, information retrieval, ontology alignment and merging, document clustering, and short answer grading. These methods can be categorized as path-based, information content-based, feature-based, geometric model-based, and hybrid approaches. These approaches use resources such as concept hierarchy, conceptual graph, and corpus for computing similarity and relatedness. With the rise of the semantic web, ontologies have attracted the attention of several researchers. Ontologies represented in the Web Ontology Language (OWL) are also valuable …

The Meaning Of Music-Making For Computer Scientists With A Serious Musing-Making Avocation: A Phenomenological Case Study, Varda Shaked Jan 2013

The Meaning Of Music-Making For Computer Scientists With A Serious Musing-Making Avocation: A Phenomenological Case Study, Varda Shaked

Educational Studies Dissertations

This study explores the meaning of music-making in the lives of computer scientists who play classical music as their serious avocation. In particular, it investigates their tendencies and capacities to concurrently engage in two such distinct disciplines on a regular basis, by exploring the cognitive, social, and cultural aspects of their concurrent engagement. While current research literature approaches the affinities between mathematicians/scientists and musicians through the presence of mathematical properties of music and through anecdotal evidence involving known persona and their innovations, this study provides a deeper look at the individuals who combine such worlds, in order to better understand …

Energy-Aware Scheduling For Acyclic Synchronous Data Flows On Multiprocessors, Dawei Li, Jie Wu Jan 2013

Energy-Aware Scheduling For Acyclic Synchronous Data Flows On Multiprocessors, Dawei Li, Jie Wu

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Synchronous Data Flow (SDF) is a useful computational model in image processing, computer vision, and DSP. Previously, throughput and buffer requirement analyses have been studied for SDFs. In this paper, we address energy-aware scheduling for acyclic SDFs on multiprocessors. The multiprocessor considered here has the capability of Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS), which allows processors to operate at different power/energy levels to reduce the energy consumption. An acyclic SDF graph can first be transformed to an equivalent homogeneous SDF graph and then to a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) for one iteration of it. We propose pipeline scheduling to address …

Automatic Identification Of Learners’ Language Background Based On Their Writing In Czech, Katsiaryna Aharodnik, Marco Chang, Anna Feldman, Jirka Hana Jan 2013

Automatic Identification Of Learners’ Language Background Based On Their Writing In Czech, Katsiaryna Aharodnik, Marco Chang, Anna Feldman, Jirka Hana

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The goal of this study is to investigate whether learners’ written data in highly inflectional Czech can suggest a consistent set of clues for automatic identification of the learners’ L1 background. For our experiments, we use texts written by learners of Czech, which have been automatically and manually annotated for errors. We define two classes of learners: speakers of Indo-European languages and speakers of non-Indo-European languages. We use an SVM classifier to perform the binary classification. We show that non-content based features perform well on highly inflectional data. In particular, features reflecting errors in orthography are the most useful, yielding …

Algorithms And Data Structures For Efficient Timing Analysis Of Asynchronous Real-Time Systems, Yingying Zhang Jan 2013

Algorithms And Data Structures For Efficient Timing Analysis Of Asynchronous Real-Time Systems, Yingying Zhang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a framework to verify asynchronous real-time systems based on model checking. These systems are modeled by using a common modeling formalism named Labeled Petri-nets(LPNs).

In order to verify the real-time systems algorithmically, the zone-based timing analysis method is used for LPNs. It searches the state space with timing information (represented by zones). When there is a high degree of concurrency in the model, firing concurrent enabled transitions in different order may result in different zones, and these zones may be combined without affecting the verification result. Since the zone-based method could not deal with this problem efficiently, …

Relation Lifting, With An Application To The Many-Valued Cover Modality, Marta Bílková, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Jirí Velebil Jan 2013

Relation Lifting, With An Application To The Many-Valued Cover Modality, Marta Bílková, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Jirí Velebil

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We introduce basic notions and results about relation liftings on categories enriched in a commutative quantale. We derive two necessary and sufficient conditions for a 2-functor T to admit a functorial relation lifting: one is the existence of a distributive law of T over the “powerset monad” on categories, one is the preservation by T of “exactness” of certain squares. Both characterisations are generalisations of the “classical” results known for set functors: the first characterisation generalises the existence of a distributive law over the genuine powerset monad, the second generalises preservation of weak pullbacks.

The results presented in this paper …

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

Core Ironclad is a core calculus that models the salient features of Ironclad C++, a library-augmented type-safe subset of C++. We give an overview of the language including its definition and key design points. We then prove type safety for the language and use that result to show that the pointer lifetime invariant, a key property of Ironclad C++, holds within the system.

Closed Type Families With Overlapping Equations (Extended Version), Richard A. Eisenberg, Dimitrios Vytiniotis, Simon Peyton Jones, Stephanie Weirich Jan 2013

Closed Type Families With Overlapping Equations (Extended Version), Richard A. Eisenberg, Dimitrios Vytiniotis, Simon Peyton Jones, Stephanie Weirich

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

Open, type-level functions are a recent innovation in Haskell that move Haskell towards the expressiveness of dependent types, while retaining the look and feel of a practical programming language. This paper shows how to increase expressiveness still further, by adding closed type functions whose equations may overlap, and may have non-linear patterns over an open type universe. Although practically useful and simple to implement, these features go beyond conventional dependent type theory in some respects, and have a subtle metatheory.

A Case Study Towards Verification Of The Utility Of Analytical Models In Selecting Checkpoint Intervals, Michael Joseph Harney Jan 2013

A Case Study Towards Verification Of The Utility Of Analytical Models In Selecting Checkpoint Intervals, Michael Joseph Harney

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

As high performance computing (HPC) systems grow larger, with increasing numbers of components, failures become more common. Codes that utilize large numbers of nodes and run for long periods of time must take such failures into account and adopt fault tolerance mechanisms to avoid loss of computation and, thus, system utilization. One of those mechanisms is checkpoint/restart. Although analytical models exist to guide users in the selection of an appropriate checkpoint interval, these models are based on assumptions that may not always be true. This thesis examines some of these assumptions, in particular, the consistency of parameters like Mean Time …

Emotion Capture: Emotionally Expressive Characters For Games, Cathy Ennis, Ludovic Hoyet, Arjan Egges, Rachel Mcdonnell Jan 2013

Emotion Capture: Emotionally Expressive Characters For Games, Cathy Ennis, Ludovic Hoyet, Arjan Egges, Rachel Mcdonnell

Conference papers

It has been shown that humans are sensitive to the portrayal of emotions for virtual characters. However, previous work in this area has often examined this sensitivity using extreme examples of facial or body animation. Less is known about how attuned people are at recognizing emotions as they are expressed during conversational communication. In order to determine whether body or facial motion is a better indicator for emotional expression for game characters, we conduct a perceptual experiment using synchronized full-body and facial motion-capture data. We find that people can recognize emotions from either modality alone, but combining facial and body …

A New Tool For Qt Interval Analysis During Sleep In Healthy And Obstructive Sleep Apnea Subjects: A Study On Women, Kemal Ali̇can Kaya, Bülent Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

By monitoring the Q wave/T wave (QT) interval computed from electrocardiography (ECG) signals during sleep, it is possible to create a link between the ventricular repolarization and sleep stages. In this study, we aimed to find a robust and simple approach to automatically determine the fiducials on each 30-s sleep epoch, such as the Q, R, and T-end points, on long sleep ECG recordings in order to statistically analyze the effect of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and sleep stages on QT intervals. This is a retrospective study in which the ECG data extracted from the polysomnography recordings of 7 healthy …

Estimation Of Fuel Cost Curve Parameters For Thermal Power Plants Using The Abc Algorithm, Yusuf Sönmez Jan 2013

Estimation Of Fuel Cost Curve Parameters For Thermal Power Plants Using The Abc Algorithm, Yusuf Sönmez

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The solution accuracy of economic dispatch problems is associated with the accuracy of the fuel cost curve parameters. Therefore, updating of these parameters is a very important issue to further improve the final accuracy of economic dispatch problems. Estimating the parameters of the fuel cost curve may be the best solution for this issue. This paper presents an application of the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm to estimate the fuel cost curve parameters of thermal power plants. In the estimation problem, 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-order fuel cost functions are used, and the estimation problem is formulated as an optimization one. …

Preserving Location Privacy For A Group Of Users, Maede Ashouri-Talouki, Ahmad Baraani Dastjerdi, Ali̇ Aydin Selçuk Jan 2013

Preserving Location Privacy For A Group Of Users, Maede Ashouri-Talouki, Ahmad Baraani Dastjerdi, Ali̇ Aydin Selçuk

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Location privacy is an interesting problem that has been receiving considerable attention. This problem has been widely discussed from the individual point of view; however, there exist only a few works that support location privacy for a group of users. In this paper we consider the problem of supporting location privacy for a group of users during the use of location-based services (LBSs). We assume a group of users who want to benefit from a LBS and find the nearest meeting place that minimizes their aggregate distance. Each user in this scenario wants to protect his or her location from …

Swarm Optimization Tuned Mamdani Fuzzy Controller For Diabetes Delayed Model, Mohammad Hassan Khooban, Davood Nazari Maryam Abadi, Alireza Alfi, Mehdi Siahi Jan 2013

Swarm Optimization Tuned Mamdani Fuzzy Controller For Diabetes Delayed Model, Mohammad Hassan Khooban, Davood Nazari Maryam Abadi, Alireza Alfi, Mehdi Siahi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the blood glucose level in the body. Diabetes mellitus can be caused by too little insulin, a resistance to insulin, or both. Although research activities on controlling blood glucose have been attempted to lower the blood glucose level in the quickest possible time, there are some shortages in the amount of the insulin injection. In this paper, a complete model of the glucose--insulin regulation system, which is a nonlinear delay differential model, is used. The purpose of this …
