Drudge: A High-Level To High-Level Translator For The Easyc Platform, Brandon Paul Jones Jan 2013

Drudge: A High-Level To High-Level Translator For The Easyc Platform, Brandon Paul Jones

Student Theses and Dissertations

The use of abstraction along with the use of critical thinking are key concepts in computer science. The development of these skills are crucial for survival and success in the field. I believe the key to success is to allow students to experiment with computer science concepts at an early age. The BEST robotics competition is a fertile ground for potential future computer scientists and engineers, however the current robotic programming platforms prove to be overly challenging for the young audience. In this thesis, I propose both a new approach to teaching younger individuals programming, as well as, a new …

Efficient Salient Region Detection With Soft Image Abstraction, Ming-Ming Cheng, Jonathan Warrell, Wen-Yan Lin, Shuai Zheng, Vibhav Vineet, Nigel Crook Jan 2013

Efficient Salient Region Detection With Soft Image Abstraction, Ming-Ming Cheng, Jonathan Warrell, Wen-Yan Lin, Shuai Zheng, Vibhav Vineet, Nigel Crook

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Detecting visually salient regions in images is one of the fundamental problems in computer vision. We propose a novel method to decompose an image into large scale perceptually homogeneous elements for efficient salient region detection, using a soft image abstraction representation. By considering both appearance similarity and spatial distribution of image pixels, the proposed representation abstracts out unnecessary image details, allowing the assignment of comparable saliency values across similar regions, and producing perceptually accurate salient region detection. We evaluate our salient region detection approach on the largest publicly available dataset with pixel accurate annotations. The experimental results show that the …

Robust Non-Parametric Data Fitting For Correspondence Modeling, Wen-Yan Lin, Ming-Ming Cheng, Shuai Zheng, Jiangbo Lu, Nigel Crook

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a generic method for obtaining nonparametric image warps from noisy point correspondences. Our formulation integrates a huber function into a motion coherence framework. This makes our fitting function especially robust to piecewise correspondence noise (where an image section is consistently mismatched). By utilizing over parameterized curves, we can generate realistic nonparametric image warps from very noisy correspondence. We also demonstrate how our algorithm can be used to help stitch images taken from a panning camera by warping the images onto a virtual push-broom camera imaging plane.

Verifying Linearizability Via Optimized Refinement Checking, Yang Liu, Wei Chen, Yanhong A. Liu, Jun Sun, Shao Jie Zhang, Jin Song Dong Dong Jan 2013

Verifying Linearizability Via Optimized Refinement Checking, Yang Liu, Wei Chen, Yanhong A. Liu, Jun Sun, Shao Jie Zhang, Jin Song Dong Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Linearizability is an important correctness criterion for implementations of concurrent objects. Automatic checking of linearizability is challenging because it requires checking that: 1) All executions of concurrent operations are serializable, and 2) the serialized executions are correct with respect to the sequential semantics. In this work, we describe a method to automatically check linearizability based on refinement relations from abstract specifications to concrete implementations. The method does not require that linearization points in the implementations be given, which is often difficult or impossible. However, the method takes advantage of linearization points if they are given. The method is based on …

Stock Market Prediction Without Sentiment Analysis: Using A Web-Traffic Based Classifier And User-Level Analysis, Pierpaolo Dondio Jan 2013

Stock Market Prediction Without Sentiment Analysis: Using A Web-Traffic Based Classifier And User-Level Analysis, Pierpaolo Dondio

Conference papers

This paper provides further evidence on the predictive power of online community traffic with regard to stock prices. Using the largest dataset to date, spanning 8 years and almost the complete set of SP500 stocks, we train a classifier using a set of features entirely extracted from web-traffic data of financial online communities. The classifier is shown to outperform the predictive power of a baseline classifier solely based on price time-series, and to have similar performances as the classifier built considering price and traffic features together. The best predictive performances are achieved when information about stock capitalization is coupled with …

Object Detection And Recognition In Natural Settings, George William Dittmar Jan 2013

Object Detection And Recognition In Natural Settings, George William Dittmar

Dissertations and Theses

Much research as of late has focused on biologically inspired vision models that are based on our understanding of how the visual cortex processes information. One prominent example of such a system is HMAX [17]. HMAX attempts to simulate the biological process for object recognition in cortex based on the model proposed by Hubel & Wiesel [10]. This thesis investigates the ability of an HMAX-like system (GLIMPSE [20]) to perform object-detection in cluttered natural scenes. I evaluate these results using the StreetScenes database from MIT [1, 8]. This thesis addresses three questions: (1) Can the GLIMPSE-based object detection system replicate …

Advanced Optimization Techniques For Monte Carlo Simulation On Graphics Processing Units, Eyad Hailat Jan 2013

Advanced Optimization Techniques For Monte Carlo Simulation On Graphics Processing Units, Eyad Hailat

Wayne State University Dissertations

The objective of this work is to design and implement a self-adaptive parallel GPU optimized Monte Carlo algorithm for the simulation of adsorption in porous materials. We focus on Nvidia's GPUs and CUDA's Fermi architecture specifically. The resulting package supports the different ensemble methods for the Monte Carlo simulation, which will allow for the simulation of multi-component adsorption in porous solids. Such an algorithm will have broad applications to the development of novel porous materials for the sequestration of CO2 and the filtration of toxic industrial chemicals.

The primary objective of this work is the release of a massively parallel …

Towards Personalized Medicine Using Systems Biology And Machine Learning, Calin Voichita Jan 2013

Towards Personalized Medicine Using Systems Biology And Machine Learning, Calin Voichita

Wayne State University Dissertations

The rate of acquiring biological data has greatly surpassed our ability to interpret it. At the same time, we have started to understand that evolution of many diseases such as cancer, are the results of the interplay between the disease itself and the immune system of the host. It is now well accepted that cancer is not a single disease, but a “complex collection of distinct genetic diseases united by common hallmarks”. Understanding the differences between such disease subtypes is key not only in providing adequate treatments for known subtypes but also identifying new ones. These unforeseen disease subtypes are …

Modeling And Verifying Hierarchical Real-Time Systems Using Stateful Timed Csp, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Yan Liu, Ling Shi, Étienne André Jan 2013

Modeling And Verifying Hierarchical Real-Time Systems Using Stateful Timed Csp, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Yan Liu, Ling Shi, Étienne André

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Modeling and verifying complex real-time systems are challenging research problems. The de facto approach is based on Timed Automata, which are finite state automata equipped with clock variables. Timed Automata are deficient in modeling hierarchical complex systems. In this work, we propose a language called Stateful Timed CSP and an automated approach for verifying Stateful Timed CSP models. Stateful Timed CSP is based on Timed CSP and is capable of specifying hierarchical real-time systems. Through dynamic zone abstraction, finite-state zone graphs can be generated automatically from Stateful Timed CSP models, which are subject to model checking. Like Timed Automata, Stateful …

Paperless Subjective Programming Assignment Assessment: A First Step, David Hansen

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

A significant component of student evaluation includes the objective and subjective assessment of programming assignments. We describe bits and pieces of a paperless electronic workflow we’ve recently used to provide objective and subjective feedback to students, emphasizing the tools and process used to provide subjective programming assignment assessment. We identify opportunities for future work to complete an end-to-end paperless electronic workflow that incorporates subjective assessment.

Comparison Of Models For Mixture Transport Properties For Numerical Simulations Of Ablative Heat-Shields, Hicham Alkandry, Iain D. Boyd, Alexandre Martin Jan 2013

Comparison Of Models For Mixture Transport Properties For Numerical Simulations Of Ablative Heat-Shields, Hicham Alkandry, Iain D. Boyd, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The goal of this study is to evaluate the effects of different models for calculating the mixture transport properties on flowfield predictions of ablative heat-shields. The Stardust sample return capsule at four different trajectory conditions is used as a test case for this study. In the first part of the study, the results predicted using Wilke's mixing rule with species viscosities calculated using Blottner's curve fits and species thermal conductivities determined using Eucken's relation are compared to the results obtained using Gupta's mixing rule with collision cross-section (CCS) data. The Wilke/Blottner/Eucken model overpredicts the heat transfer to the surface relative …

Modeling Of Chemical Nonequilibrium Effects In A Charring Ablator, Alexandre Martin Jan 2013

Modeling Of Chemical Nonequilibrium Effects In A Charring Ablator, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Charring ablators remain the premium choice for space exploration missions that involve atmospheric re-entry. These type of ablative material are composed of a carbon matrix, usually made of fibers, which is then impregnated with a resin. During re-entry, the high heat flux produced by convective heating causes the material to chemically react. First, the resin pyrolyzes, and is vaporized into a gas that travels through the material, and is eventually ejected at the surface. Since the composition of the gas at the surface greatly affects the heat flux, and therefore the surface temperature, it is thus important to be able …

Raising The Bar On Training At Valparaiso University, Kevin M. Steele, Matthew Smith Jan 2013

Raising The Bar On Training At Valparaiso University, Kevin M. Steele, Matthew Smith

Information Technology Faculty and Staff Publications

We have recently overhauled our IT training program that we offer our students, faculty and staff. In the past, the training program consisted of sessions about changes to campus systems or sessions related to very specific software uses such as mail merge or tables. Users can now expect that training will be more than software use and how-to’s. We have started looking at ways to enhance our clients overall use of campus technology. As we examined ways to better serve our campus community, we engaged in qualitative observations in many areas. We examined how our graduate students were using technology …

Visualization Of Off-Screen Data On Tablets Using Context-Providing Bar Graphs And Scatter Plots, Peter S. Games, Alark Joshi Jan 2013

Visualization Of Off-Screen Data On Tablets Using Context-Providing Bar Graphs And Scatter Plots, Peter S. Games, Alark Joshi

Computer Science

Visualizing data on tablets is challenging due to the relatively small screen size and limited user interaction capabilities. Standard data visualization apps provide support for pinch-and-zoom and scrolling operations, but do not provide context for data that is off-screen. When exploring data on tablets, the user must be able to focus on a region of interest and quickly find interesting patterns in the data. We present visualization techniques that facilitate seamless interaction with the region of interest on a tablet using context-providing bar graphs and scatter plots. Through aggregation, fisheye-style, and overview+detail representations, we provide context to the users as …

Detecting Mobility Patterns In Mobile Phone Data From The Ivory Coast, Matthew Dixon, Spencer P. Aiello, Funmi Fapohunda, William Goldstein Jan 2013

Detecting Mobility Patterns In Mobile Phone Data From The Ivory Coast, Matthew Dixon, Spencer P. Aiello, Funmi Fapohunda, William Goldstein

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This paper investigates the Data for Development (D4D) challenge [3], an open challenge set by the French mobile phone company, Orange, who have provided anonymized records of their customers in the Ivory Coast. This data spans a 5 month (150 day) horizon spread across 4 different sets containing antenna-to-antenna traffic, trace data for 50,000 customers at varying spatial resolution, and social graphs for 5,000 customers. By leveraging cloud-based and open-source analytics infrastructure to (1) merge the D4D datasets with Geographic Information System (GIS) data and (2) apply data mining algorithms, this paper presents a number of techniques for detecting mobility …
