Cross-Domain Password-Based Authenticated Key Exchange Revisited, Liqun Chen, Hoon Wei Lim, Guomin Yang
Cross-Domain Password-Based Authenticated Key Exchange Revisited, Liqun Chen, Hoon Wei Lim, Guomin Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We revisit the problem of secure cross-domain communication between two users belonging to different security domains within an open and distributed environment. Existing approaches presuppose that either the users are in possession of public key certificates issued by a trusted certificate authority (CA), or the associated domain authentication servers share a long-term secret key. In this paper, we propose a generic framework for designing four-party password-based authenticated key exchange (4PAKE) protocols. Our framework takes a different approach from previous work. The users are not required to have public key certificates, but they simply reuse their login passwords they share with …
Circular Reranking For Visual Search, Ting Yao, Chong-Wah Ngo
Circular Reranking For Visual Search, Ting Yao, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Search reranking is regarded as a common way to boost retrieval precision. The problem nevertheless is not trivial especially when there are multiple features or modalities to be considered for search, which often happens in image and video retrieval. This paper proposes a new reranking algorithm, named circular reranking, that reinforces the mutual exchange of information across multiple modalities for improving search performance, following the philosophy that strong performing modality could learn from weaker ones, while weak modality does benefit from interacting with stronger ones. Technically, circular reranking conducts multiple runs of random walks through exchanging the ranking scores among …
Searching Visual Instances With Topology Checking And Context Modeling, Wei Zhang, Chong-Wah Ngo
Searching Visual Instances With Topology Checking And Context Modeling, Wei Zhang, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Instance Search (INS) is a realistic problem initiated by TRECVID, which is to retrieve all occurrences of the querying object, location, or person from a large video collection. It is a fundamental problem with many applications, and also a challenging problem different from the traditional concept or near-duplicate (ND) search, since the relevancy is defined at instance level. True responses could exhibit various visual variations, such as being small on the image with different background, or showing a non-homography spatial configuration. Based on the Bag-of-Words model, we propose two techniques tailored for Instance Search. Specifically, we explore the use of …
Measuring The Value Of Conceptual Modeling A Return On Investment (Roi) Analysis, Jeffrey Alan Brelsford
Measuring The Value Of Conceptual Modeling A Return On Investment (Roi) Analysis, Jeffrey Alan Brelsford
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis presents a method for calculating the return on investment (ROI) of conceptual modeling. Conceptual modeling as it relates to Modeling and Simulation (M&S) studies is a process that abstracts a model of a real or proposed system to be subsequently used for developing computer models. The conceptual modeling process is a critical constituent in an M&S project because it produces the central reference for building the computer model. Computer models require formal logic to carry out procedures, and consistent arguments in formal logic are crucial for the model to be useful. Not only does formal logic provide the …

Tdma Slot Reservation In Cluster-Based Vanets, Mohammad Salem Almalag
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are a form of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) in which vehicles on the road form the nodes of the network. VANETs provide several services to enhance the safety and comfort of drivers and passengers. These services can be obtained by the wireless exchange of information among the vehicles driving on the road. In particular, the transmission of two different types of messages, safety/update and non-safety messages.
The transmission of safety/update message aims to inform the nearby vehicles about the sender's current status and/or a detected dangerous situation. This type of transmission is designed to …
Artificial Immune Systems And Particle Swarm Optimization For Solutions To The General Adversarial Agents Problem, Jeremy Mange
Artificial Immune Systems And Particle Swarm Optimization For Solutions To The General Adversarial Agents Problem, Jeremy Mange
Dissertations
The general adversarial agents problem is an abstract problem description touching on the fields of Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, decision theory, and game theory. The goal of the problem is, given one or more mobile agents, each identified as either “friendly" or “enemy", along with a specified environment state, to choose an action or series of actions from all possible valid choices for the next “timestep" or series thereof, in order to lead toward a specified outcome or set of outcomes. This dissertation explores approaches to this problem utilizing Artificial Immune Systems, Particle Swarm Optimization, and hybrid approaches, along with …
Photo Forensics From Partial Constraints, Eric R. Kee
Photo Forensics From Partial Constraints, Eric R. Kee
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
A variety of forensic methods have been developed to identify falsified photos, each unified by the ability to estimate and detect properties of a photo that are perturbed by forgery. There exist, however, many photos in which the required properties cannot be estimated. We present an approach to detect forgery in these photos. We use this approach to detect physically inconsistent shadows and shading in photos for which it is not possible to estimate the associated lighting properties. Specifically, we develop a method to detect inconsistent shadows cast by point and area light sources when a strict shadow-to-object correspondence cannot …
Simulation And Detection Of Unintended Electromagnetic Emissions From Super-Regenerative Receivers, Jake Hertenstein, S. Jagannathan
Simulation And Detection Of Unintended Electromagnetic Emissions From Super-Regenerative Receivers, Jake Hertenstein, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel method for detecting the presence of the unintended electromagnetic emissions (UEE) from radio receivers is examined without a priori data or training. As an extension of previous research, the behavior of the super-regenerative receiver (SRR) is modeled and simulated with fractional Brownian noise to verify the detection model. This model shows that the presence of noise in the feedback circuit of the SRR is responsible for the characteristic frequency distribution of the receiver's UEE. A second-order self-similarity model is used to estimate the Hurst parameter as a detection threshold for the presence of long-range dependent noise that is …
Stochastic Modeling And Time-To-Event Analysis Of Voip Traffic, Imad Al Ajarmeh
Stochastic Modeling And Time-To-Event Analysis Of Voip Traffic, Imad Al Ajarmeh
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Voice over IP (VoIP) systems are gaining increased popularity due to the cost effectiveness, ease of management, and enhanced features and capabilities. Both enterprises and carriers are deploying VoIP systems to replace their TDM-based legacy voice networks. However, the lack of engineering models for VoIP systems has been realized by many researchers, especially for large-scale networks. The purpose of traffic engineering is to minimize call blocking probability and maximize resource utilization. The current traffic engineering models are inherited from the legacy PSTN world, and these models fall short from capturing the characteristics of new traffic patterns. The objective of this …
An Investigation And Analysis Of The Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex In A Vibration Environment, Daniel J. Uribe
An Investigation And Analysis Of The Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex In A Vibration Environment, Daniel J. Uribe
Theses and Dissertations
Forty years of innovations have greatly improved Helmet-Mounted Displays (HMDs) and their integration into military systems. However, a significant issue with HMDs is the effect of vibration and the associated Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR). When a human’s head is subject to low-frequency vibration, the VOR stabilizes the eye with respect to objects in the external environment. However, this response is inappropriate in HMDs as the display moves with the user’s head and the VOR blurs the image as it is projected on the human retina. Current compensation techniques suggest increasing the size of displayed graphics or text to compensate for the …
Modeling Cyber Situational Awareness Through Data Fusion, Evan L. Raulerson
Modeling Cyber Situational Awareness Through Data Fusion, Evan L. Raulerson
Theses and Dissertations
Cyber attacks are compromising networks faster than administrators can respond. Network defenders are unable to become oriented with these attacks, determine the potential impacts, and assess the damages in a timely manner. Since the observations of network sensors are normally disjointed, analysis of the data is overwhelming and time is not spent efficiently. Automation in defending cyber networks requires a level of reasoning for adequate response. Current automated systems are mostly limited to scripted responses. Better defense tools are required. This research develops a framework that aggregates data from heterogeneous network sensors. The collected data is correlated into a single …
Rootkit Detection Using A Cross-View Clean Boot Method, Bridget N. Flatley
Rootkit Detection Using A Cross-View Clean Boot Method, Bridget N. Flatley
Theses and Dissertations
In cyberspace, attackers commonly infect computer systems with malware to gain capabilities such as remote access, keylogging, and stealth. Many malware samples include rootkit functionality to hide attacker activities on the target system. After detection, users can remove the rootkit and associated malware from the system with commercial tools. This research describes, implements, and evaluates a clean boot method using two partitions to detect rootkits on a system. One partition is potentially infected with a rootkit while the other is clean. The method obtains directory listings of the potentially infected operating system from each partition and compares the lists to …

A total of four undergraduate students participated in the research.
Semantic Modeling Of Requirements: Leveraging Ontologies In Systems Engineering, Masood S. Mir
Semantic Modeling Of Requirements: Leveraging Ontologies In Systems Engineering, Masood S. Mir
Theses and Dissertations
The interdisciplinary nature of Systems Engineering (SE), having stakeholders from diverse domains with orthogonal facets, and need to consider all stages of lifecycle of system during conception, can benefit tremendously by employing Knowledge Engineering (KE) to achieve semantic agreement among all stakeholders for all stages of life cycle. Present practices in SE, such as using Vocabularies, Processes, Standards, and Modeling Languages are oriented towards manual reasoning of system concepts and relations to achieve semantic agreement. Semantic Web (SW) is being developed to provide KE and automated reasoning to the unstructured information, in huge amounts, present on the World Wide Web, …

Theses and Dissertations
items) which do not appear in the database. Given this taxonomy, there exist generalized items which do not appear in the uncertain database, but nevertheless, can be probabilistically frequent within. Thus, a new method is introduced which calculates the probability of a generalized item appearing within a transaction, and thus, one can then mine for PGFIs in an uncertain database.
Modeling And Analysis Of Information Product Maps, Christopher Harris Heien
Modeling And Analysis Of Information Product Maps, Christopher Harris Heien
Theses and Dissertations
Information Product Maps are visual diagrams used to represent the inputs, processing, and outputs of data within an Information Manufacturing System. A data unit, drawn as an edge, symbolizes a grouping of raw data as it travels through this system. Processes, drawn as vertices, transform each data unit input into various forms prior to delivery to consumers. These visual representations act as documentation for all processes, and data unit transformations, leading to the final construction and delivery of an Information Product. The science of Information Quality strives to measure the fitness for use of these products, expressed by consumer satisfaction. …
Mobile Network Defense Interface For Cyber Defense And Situational Awareness, James C. Hannan
Mobile Network Defense Interface For Cyber Defense And Situational Awareness, James C. Hannan
Theses and Dissertations
Today's computer networks are under constant attack. In order to deal with this constant threat, network administrators rely on intrusion detection and prevention services (IDS) (IPS). Most IDS and IPS implement static rule sets to automatically alert administrators and resolve intrusions. Network administrators face a difficult challenge, identifying attacks against a vast number of benign network transactions. Also after a threat is identified making even the smallest policy change to the security software potentially has far-reaching and unanticipated consequences. Finally, because the administrator is primarily responding to alerts they may lose situational awareness of the network. During this research a …
A Graphical Approach To Drug Safety And Drug Repositioning, Halil Bisgin
A Graphical Approach To Drug Safety And Drug Repositioning, Halil Bisgin
Theses and Dissertations
The pharmaceutical industry has been experiencing diminishing returns in terms of newly approved drugs over a decade. Limited knowledge of target space and the safety issues that come along with newly discovered compounds have forced pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, and academia to seek more practical solutions. Since there have been several cases of repurposing, research interests have emerged for existing drugs whose pharmacokinetics properties are already known and investigation of their potential to treat other cases has become a new direction in pharmacology. Recently, several in silico methodologies have been developed for drug repositioning. In this study, the same purpose …

Journal of Undergraduate Research
The primary goal of the research was to produce robotic tools that can help children with learning disabilities become higher functioning. We accomplished this goal by creating two humanoid robots and a user interface for programming and controlling the robots. We went beyond this goal, with assistance from a Honda Initiation Grant, and developed therapy plans for using the robots to help children with autism, and completed a pilot study with two children with autism during Winter 2010.
Face Tracking User Interfaces Using Vision-Based Consumer Devices, Norman Villaroman
Face Tracking User Interfaces Using Vision-Based Consumer Devices, Norman Villaroman
Theses and Dissertations
Some individuals have difficulty using standard hand-manipulated input devices such as a mouse and a keyboard effectively. For such users who at the same time have sufficient control over face and head movement, a robust perceptual or vision-based user interface that can track face movement can significantly help them. Using vision-based consumer devices makes such a user interface readily available and allows its use to be non-intrusive. Designing this type of user interface presents some significant challenges particularly with accuracy and usability. This research investigates such problems and proposes solutions to create a usable and robust face tracking user interface …
Learning With Single View Co-Training And Marginalized Dropout, Minmin Chen
Learning With Single View Co-Training And Marginalized Dropout, Minmin Chen
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The generalization properties of most existing machine learning techniques are predicated on the assumptions that 1) a sufficiently large quantity of training data is available; 2) the training and testing data come from some common distribution. Although these assumptions are often met in practice, there are also many scenarios in which training data from the relevant distribution is insufficient. We focus on making use of additional data, which is readily available or can be obtained easily but comes from a different distribution than the testing data, to aid learning.
We present five learning scenarios, depending on how the distribution we …

Parallel_Dp: The Parallel Dynamic Programming Design Pattern As An Intel Threading Building Blocks Algorithm Template, Douglas Jack Serfass
Theses and Dissertations
Our work was composed of three parts, with the goal of selecting either the Cilk or Go languages or C++ Intel Threading Building Blocks (TBB) in order to create a template for parallel dynamic programming. Use of a template for parallel dynamic programming will enable programmers to attain increased speed from multiple-core processors without having be experts in synchronization, load balancing and cache optimization. In part one, we compared Cilk and Go performance. We created a scalable parallel algorithm based on parallelizing the merge sorting network algorithm. We implemented our scalable parallel algorithm using Go and Cilk. Both Cilk and …
A Reduced-Dimensional Structure For Fast, Visually-Assisted Search, Montadar Mohammad Al-Muhana
A Reduced-Dimensional Structure For Fast, Visually-Assisted Search, Montadar Mohammad Al-Muhana
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project is to determine if the properties preserved by low-dimensional manifolds of high-dimensional data sets can be combined with human visual acuity to improve search. Dimensionality-reducing manifold embeddings preserve relative path lengths between data elements even as a number of dimensions by which the data is represented are removed. By preserving smooth spatial variations between data elements, we may leverage the power of the human vision system to infer spatial patterns within the manifold and rapidly guide the search process to highly desirable regions of the data set: this should be true even when relevant data …

This article describes the three-phase model for interdisciplinary learning and research developed through the project, providing a valuable case study for inquiry based art/science education.
Stable Image Reconstruction Using Total Variation Minimization, Deanna Needell, Rachel Ward
Stable Image Reconstruction Using Total Variation Minimization, Deanna Needell, Rachel Ward
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
This article presents near-optimal guarantees for stable and robust image recovery from undersampled noisy measurements using total variation minimization. In particular, we show that from O(s log(N)) nonadaptive linear measurements, an image can be reconstructed to within the best s-term approximation of its gradient up to a logarithmic factor, and this factor can be removed by taking slightly more measurements. Along the way, we prove a strengthened Sobolev inequality for functions lying in the null space of suitably incoherent matrices.
Self-Configuring Neural Networks, Justin M. Anderson
Self-Configuring Neural Networks, Justin M. Anderson
Computer Science Theses
Neural Networks are an effective means of classifying data; however they are usually purpose built applications that are created for classifying a single data set. Programming a neural network can be a time consuming and sometimes error prone process. To alleviate both of these problems a self-configuring multilayer perceptron model was used to create and train neural networks. This application can take any training data set that is linearly or nonlinearly separable as input, then create the needed neural network structure and train itself, thus saving programmers' time and effort. The software has been tested with several data sets including …
