Cloud Technology And Ehr Data Management, Jonathan Tancer, Aparna S. Varde
Cloud Technology And Ehr Data Management, Jonathan Tancer, Aparna S. Varde
Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Cloud technology today is being leveraged in various aspects of life ranging from entertainment to business. Among its several applications, interesting ones are those in the general field of scientific data management. The data generated here is typically of huge volumes from multiple sources and sharing often becomes imperative for collaboration among professionals and access to users. At the same time, the information involved is usually of a highly sensitive nature posing risks in sharing. In this work, we look closely at the healthcare domain where data was traditionally stored using pen-and-paper and has now shifted to electronic records being …
Generalizing Agent Plans And Behaviors With Automated Staged Observation In The Real-Time Strategy Game Starcraft, Zackary A. Gill
Generalizing Agent Plans And Behaviors With Automated Staged Observation In The Real-Time Strategy Game Starcraft, Zackary A. Gill
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In this thesis we investigate the processes involved in learning to play a game. It was inspired by two observations about how human players learn to play. First, learning the domain is intertwined with goal pursuit. Second, games are designed to ramp up in complexity, walking players through a gradual cycle of acquiring, refining, and generalizing knowledge about the domain. This approach does not rely on traces of expert play. We created an integrated planning, learning and execution system that uses StarCraft as its domain. The planning module creates command/event groupings based on the data received. Observations of unit behavior …

Function Approximation With Artmap Architectures, Lucian M. Sasu, Răzvan Andonie
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
We analyze function approximation (regression) capability of Fuzzy ARTMAP (FAM) architectures - well-known incremental learning neural networks. We focus especially on the universal approximation property. In our experiments, we compare the regression performance of FAM networks with other standard neural models. It is the first time that ARTMAP regression is overviewed, both from theoretical and practical points of view.
Motion Capture Study Of Human Movement Recognition, Nicholas Kinerd
Motion Capture Study Of Human Movement Recognition, Nicholas Kinerd
All Theses
In this thesis, we address questions about recognition of human movement through motion
capture. We begin by capturing the martial arts movements of four actors as they each perform
three different techniques. We then conduct a survey to determine if participants in
the survey are able to distinguish the various martial arts techniques and differentiate the
actors that portray said techniques. A secondary consideration of our survey is to determine
if the participants can distinguish the sex of the actors as they perform the martial arts
techniques. Our hypothesis is that people are able to distinguish actors and sex; however, …
The Crs Package: Nonparametric Regression Splines For Continuous And Categorical Predictors, Zhenghua Nie, Jeffery S. Racine
The Crs Package: Nonparametric Regression Splines For Continuous And Categorical Predictors, Zhenghua Nie, Jeffery S. Racine
The R Journal
A new package crs is introduced for computing nonparametric regression (and quantile) splines in the presence of both continuous and categorical predictors. B-splines are employed in the regression model for the continuous predictors and kernel weighting is employed for the categorical predictors. We also de velop a simple R interface to NOMAD, which is a mixed integer optimization solver used to compute optimal regression spline solutions.
Influence.Me: Tools For Detecting Influential Data In Mixed Effects Models, Rense Nieuwenhuis, Manfred Te Grotenhuis, Ben Pelzer
Influence.Me: Tools For Detecting Influential Data In Mixed Effects Models, Rense Nieuwenhuis, Manfred Te Grotenhuis, Ben Pelzer
The R Journal
influence.ME provides tools for detecting influential data in mixed effects models. The application of these models has become common practice, but the development of diagnostic tools has lagged behind. influence.ME calculates standardized measures of influential data for the point estimates of generalized mixed effects models, such as DFBETAS, Cook’s distance, as well as percentile change and a test for changing levels of significance. influence.ME calculates these measures of influence while ac counting for the nesting structure of the data. The package and measures of influential data are introduced, a practical example is given, and strategies for dealing with influential data …
Graphical Markov Models With Mixed Graphs In R, Kayvan Sadeghi, Giovanni M. Marchetti
Graphical Markov Models With Mixed Graphs In R, Kayvan Sadeghi, Giovanni M. Marchetti
The R Journal
In this paper we provide a short tuto rial illustrating the new functions in the package ggm that deal with ancestral, summary and ribbonless graphs. These are mixed graphs (containing three types of edges) that are important because they capture the modified independence structure after marginalisation over, and conditioning on, nodes of directed acyclic graphs. We provide functions to verify whether a mixed graph implies that A is independent of B given C for any disjoint sets of nodes and to generate maximal graphs inducing the same independence structure of non-maximal graphs. Finally, we provide functions to decide on the …
What's In A Name?, Paul Murrell
What's In A Name?, Paul Murrell
The R Journal
Any shape that is drawn using the grid graphics package can have a name associated with it. If a name is provided, it is possible to access, query, and modify the shape after it has been drawn. These facilities allow for very detailed customisations of plots and also for very general transformations of plots that are drawn by packages based on grid.
Frailtyhl: A Package For Fitting Frailty Models With H-Likelihood, Il Do Ha, Maengseok Noh, Youngjo Lee
Frailtyhl: A Package For Fitting Frailty Models With H-Likelihood, Il Do Ha, Maengseok Noh, Youngjo Lee
The R Journal
We present the frailtyHL package for fitting semi-parametric frailty models using h likelihood. This package allows lognormal or gamma frailties for random-effect distribution, and it fits shared or multilevel frailty models for correlated survival data. Functions are provided to format and summarize the frailtyHL results. The estimates of fixed effects and frailty parameters and their standard errors are calculated. We illustrate the use of our package with three well known data sets and compare our results with various alternative R-procedures.
Rfit: Rank-Based Estimation For Linear Models, John D. Kloke, Joseph W. Mckeen
Rfit: Rank-Based Estimation For Linear Models, John D. Kloke, Joseph W. Mckeen
The R Journal
In the nineteen seventies, Jureĉková and Jaeckel proposed rank estimation for linear models. Since that time, several authors have developed inference and diagnostic methods for these estimators. These rank-based estimators and their associated inference are highly efficient and are robust to outliers in response space. The methods include estimation of standard errors, tests of general linear hypotheses, confidence intervals, diagnostic procedures including studentized residuals, and measures of influential cases. We have developed an R package, Rfit, for computing of these robust procedures. In this paper we highlight the main features of the pack age. The package uses standard linear …

It's Not What You Draw, It's What You Don't Draw, Paul Murrell
The R Journal
The R graphics engine has new support for drawing complex paths via the functions polypath() and grid.path(). This article explains what is meant by a complex path and demonstrates the usefulness of complex paths in drawing non-trivial shapes, logos, customised data symbols, and maps.
Debugging Grid Graphics, Paul Murrell, Velvet Ly
Debugging Grid Graphics, Paul Murrell, Velvet Ly
The R Journal
A graphical scene that has been produced using the grid graphics package consists of grobs (graphical objects) and viewports. This article describes functions that allow the exploration and inspection of the grobs and viewports in a grid scene, including several functions that are available in a new package called gridDe bug. The ability to explore the grobs and view ports in a grid scene is useful for adding more drawing to a scene that was produced using grid and for understanding and debugging the grid code that produced a scene.
The State Of Naming Conventions In R, Rasmus Bååth
The State Of Naming Conventions In R, Rasmus Bååth
The R Journal
Most programming language communities have naming conventions that are generally agreed upon, that is, a set of rules that governs how functions and variables are named. This is not the case with R, and a review of unofficial style guides and naming convention us age on CRAN shows that a number of different naming conventions are currently in use. Some naming conventions are, however, more popular than others and as a newcomer to the R community or as a developer of a new package this could be useful to consider when choosing what naming convention to adopt.
A Combinatorial Solution For Scheduling Spatial Multiplexing In Mimo-Based Ad Hoc Networks, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye
A Combinatorial Solution For Scheduling Spatial Multiplexing In Mimo-Based Ad Hoc Networks, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In a MIMO-Based ad hoc network, the conflict relation between transmissions is fundamentally changed due to the multiple packet reception capability of MIMO nodes. a MIMO node can receive from multiple data streams at the same time, which significantly increases data throughput. to fully utilize the additional spectrum capacity enabled by the MIMO technology, it is important that transmissions from different nodes are coordinated. the coordination scheme needs to consider both data stream multiplexing and transmission time scheduling for a maximum performance gain. in this paper, we use an optimization framework to jointly consider MIMO link spatial multiplexing and scheduling …
Three Point Encryption (3pe): Secure Communications In Delay Tolerant Networks, Roy Cabaniss, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Madria
Three Point Encryption (3pe): Secure Communications In Delay Tolerant Networks, Roy Cabaniss, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Madria
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) are a subset of Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) composed of several mobile devices. These dynamic environments make conventional security algorithms unreliable, nodes that are far apart may not have access to the other's public key, making secure message exchange difficult. Other security methods rely on requesting the key from a trusted third party, which can be unavailable in DTN. the purpose of this paper is to introduce two message security algorithms capable of delivering messages securely against either eavesdropping or manipulation. the first algorithm, Chaining, uses multiple midpoints to re-encrypt the message for the destination …
An Affordance-Based Framework For Human Computation And Human-Computer Collaboration, R. Jordan Crouser, Remco Chang
An Affordance-Based Framework For Human Computation And Human-Computer Collaboration, R. Jordan Crouser, Remco Chang
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Visual Analytics is “the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by visual interactive interfaces” [70]. The goal of this field is to develop tools and methodologies for approaching problems whose size and complexity render them intractable without the close coupling of both human and machine analysis. Researchers have explored this coupling in many venues: VAST, Vis, InfoVis, CHI, KDD, IUI, and more. While there have been myriad promising examples of human-computer collaboration, there exists no common language for comparing systems or describing the benefits afforded by designing for such collaboration. We argue that this area would benefit significantly from consensus about …

Interface Design For Unmanned Vehicle Supervision Through Hybrid Cognitive Task Analysis, Jamie C. Macbeth, M. L. Cummings, Luca F. Bertuccelli, Amit Surana
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
While there is currently significant interest in developing Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) that can be supervised by a single operator, the majority of these systems focus on Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) domains. One domain that has received significantly less attention is the use of multiple UASs to insert or extract supplies or people. To this end, MAVIES (Multi-Autonomous Vehicle Insertion-Extraction System) was developed to allow a single operator the ability to supervise a primary cargo Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) along with multiple scouting UAVs. This paper will detail the development of the design requirements generated through a Hybrid Cognitive …

Using Variable-Rate Alerting To Counter Boredom In Human Supervisory Control, Armen A. Mkrtchyan, Jamie C. Macbeth, Erin T. Solovey, Jason C. Ryan, M. L. Cummings
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
A low task load, long duration experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of cyclical attention switching strategies on operator performance in supervisory domains. The impetus for such a study stems from the lack of prior work to improve human-system performance in low task load supervisory domains through the use of design interventions. In this study, a design intervention in the form of auditory alerts is introduced and the effects of the alerts are examined. The test bed consists of a video game-like simulation environment, which allows a single opera-tor the ability to supervise multiple unmanned vehicles. Each participant in …
Incentive Based Approach To Find Selfish Nodes In Mobile P2p Networks, Hemanth Meka, Sanjay K. Madria, Mark Linderman
Incentive Based Approach To Find Selfish Nodes In Mobile P2p Networks, Hemanth Meka, Sanjay K. Madria, Mark Linderman
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In a Mobile P2P (M-P2P) network, selfish nodes can drop packets to affect the efficiency of the whole network. Therefore, we propose a simple and efficient mechanism using virtual currency to identify selfish nodes in the network. Each node issues a receipt to its broker to prove that it has provided a forwarding service. based on receipts received each broker provides well-behaved nodes some virtual currency whereas selfish nodes are punished on dropping packets to make the network more efficient. When compared to other known approaches, our scheme provides real-time detection of selfish nodes and does not require/assume the presence …
Are Twitter Users Equal In Predicting Elections? A Study Of User Groups In Predicting 2012 U.S. Republican Primaries, Lu Chen, Wenbo Wang, Amit P. Sheth
Are Twitter Users Equal In Predicting Elections? A Study Of User Groups In Predicting 2012 U.S. Republican Primaries, Lu Chen, Wenbo Wang, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
Existing studies on predicting election results are under the assumption that all the users should be treated equally. However, recent work [14] shows that social media users from different groups (e.g., “silent majority” vs. “vocal minority”) have significant differences in the generated content and tweeting behavior. The effect of these differences on predicting election results has not been exploited yet. In this paper, we study the spectrum of Twitter users who participate in the on-line discussion of 2012 U.S. Republican Presidential Primaries, and examine the predictive power of different user groups (e.g., highly engaged users vs. lowly engaged users, right-leaning …
Semantic Similarity Detection In Natural Language Documents, Lianyu Zhao
Semantic Similarity Detection In Natural Language Documents, Lianyu Zhao
All Theses
Data leak prevention (DLP) solutions monitor and control data flow. Current techniques find data that matches user defined syntactic patterns. Unfortunately, large classes of DLP relevant data are defined by information semantics, rather than data syntax. Syntax refers to data format, whereas semantics refers to data meaning. The class of social security numbers can be adequately expressed using data syntax, whereas a new industrial process can only be adequately described using information semantics. In this paper, we propose methods for extracting and identifying document semantics using training sets of limited size (tens of documents). The first method is based on …

Agent-Based Virtual Humans In Co-Space: An Evaluative Study, Yilin Kang, Ah-Hwee Tan, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Co-Space refers to interactive virtual environment modelled after the real world in terms of look-and-feel, functionalities and services. We have developed a 3D virtual world named Nan yang Technological University (NTU) Co-Space populated with virtual human characters. Three key requirements of realistic virtual humans in the virtual world have been identified, namely (1) autonomy: agents can function on their own, (2) interactivity: agents can interact naturally with players, and (3) personality: agents can exhibit human traits and characteristics. Working towards these challenges, we propose a brain-inspired agent architecture that integrates goal-directed autonomy, natural language interaction and human-like personality. We conducted …

This paper studies the importance of visualization for discerning and interpreting patterns of data and its application for solving real problems, such as anomaly detection and data management. There are various ways to realize visualization to cater to the needs of numerous real life applications. Depending on needs, a combination of some of these ways may be required for presenting an effective visualization. The authors present visualization schemes for anomaly detection/condition monitoring and data management by leveraging network techniques and combining them with modern techniques such as sensor, database, mobile communication, GPS and GIS techniques. Two case studies are presented …

Synergy And Its Limits In Managing Information Technology Professionals, Thomas W. Ferratt, Jayesh Prasad, Harvey Enns
MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications
We examine the effects of human resource management (HRM) practices (e.g., career development, social support, compensation, and security) on IT professionals‟ job search behavior. Job search is a relatively novel dependent variable in studies of voluntary withdrawal behavior, in general, and for IT professionals, in particular. From a universalistic perspective, HRM practices individually and in combination exhibit independently additive effects on job search behavior. Our study contrasts this perspective with configurational theory, hypothesizing that proposed idealtype configurations of HRM practices have synergistic effects on job search behavior. We contribute to the IT and broader HRM literature by theoretically explicating and …
Identification Of Tcp Protocols, Juan Shao
Identification Of Tcp Protocols, Juan Shao
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Recently, many new TCP algorithms, such as BIC, CUBIC, and CTCP, have been deployed in the Internet. Investigating the deployment statistics of these TCP algorithms is meaningful to study the performance and stability of the Internet. Currently, there is a tool named Congestion Avoidance Algorithm Identification (CAAI) for identifying the TCP algorithm of a web server and then for investigating the TCP deployment statistics. However, CAAI using a simple k-NN algorithm can not achieve a high identification accuracy. In this thesis, we comprehensively study the identification accuracy of five popular machine learning models. We find that the random forest model …
Dynamic Data Race Detection And Healing, Du Li
Dynamic Data Race Detection And Healing, Du Li
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Perpetual availability is an important operational goal in today's computer systems. However, achieving this goal is challenging because modern software systems contain faults that can cause them to fail. For example, multi-threading is widely used in modern software to fully utilize the computing capability of multicore processors. However, employing multi-threading can lead to concurrency faults such as deadlock and data race that are notoriously difficult to to isolate, detect, and repair.Data races, which involves two concurrent accesses to the same data where at least one is a write, are the most common concurrency faults.
As our first step, we investigate …

The W3C Semantic Sensor Network Incubator group (the SSN-XG) produced an OWL 2 ontology to describe sensors and observations — the SSN ontology, available at http://purl.oclc.org/NET/ssnx/ssn. The SSN ontology can describe sensors in terms of capabilities, measurement processes, observations and deployments. This article describes the SSN ontology. It further gives an example and describes the use of the ontology in recent research projects.

Congestion Mitigation By Traffic Dispersion In Wireless Sensor Networks, Sreekanth Yalamanchili
Congestion Mitigation By Traffic Dispersion In Wireless Sensor Networks, Sreekanth Yalamanchili
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are event-based systems that rely on the collective effort of several sensor nodes. When all nodes in an area sense an event and transmit that data, it causes sudden traffic bursts, which are spatially-correlated and lead to network congestion. Congestion can cause an increase in the amount of data loss, energy consumption, delay data transmission, and hinder network performance. To improve performance of event-driven applications, there arises a need for protocols that can reduce congestion and energy consumption. Existing protocols for sensing multiple events either handle congestion control or spatially-correlated contention, but not both, which can …

“The Rules” are found in a collaborative document (started in March 2010) that states principles for responsibility when a computer artifact is designed, developed and deployed into a sociotechnical system. At this writing, over 50 people from nine countries have signed onto The Rules (Ad Hoc Committee, 2010). Unlike codes of ethics, The Rules are not tied to any organization, and computer users as well as computing professionals are invited to sign onto The Rules. The emphasis in The Rules is that both users and professionals have responsibilities in the production and use of computing artifacts. In this paper, we …
