Effective Computer Programming Instruction For Pre-University Albanian Students, Robert Mccloud, Ardiana Sula Dec 2012

Effective Computer Programming Instruction For Pre-University Albanian Students, Robert Mccloud, Ardiana Sula

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

The relationship between pre-university students and technology is frequently overrated. While we receive glowing reports about how young people are knowledgeable about computers, the truth is that their knowledge is typically about computer content and the manipulation of applications. Young students too often treat the actual programming and understanding of computers as a sort of magical mystery.

In this paper we look at a new Albanian initiative to identify and nurture the most talented of our pre-university students. In particular we look at contributions to the goal of making Albanians the most talented programmers in this area of Europe.

The …

Effects Of Stereo And Screen Size On The Legibility Of Three-Dimensional Streamtube Visualization, Jian Chen, Haipeng Cai, Alexander P. Auchus, David H. Laidlaw Dec 2012

Effects Of Stereo And Screen Size On The Legibility Of Three-Dimensional Streamtube Visualization, Jian Chen, Haipeng Cai, Alexander P. Auchus, David H. Laidlaw

Faculty Publications

We report the impact of display characteristics (stereo and size) on task performance in diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (DMRI) in a user study with 12 participants. The hypotheses were that (1) adding stereo and increasing display size would improve task accuracy and reduce completion time, and (2) the greater the complexity of a spatial task, the greater the benefits of an improved display. Thus we expected to see greater performance gains when detailed visual reasoning was required. Participants used dense streamtube visualizations to perform five representative tasks: (1) determine the higher average fractional anisotropy (FA) values between two regions, (2) …

Numerical Studies For Solving Fractional Riccati Differential Equation, N. H. Sweilam, M. M. Khader, A. M. S. Mahdy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, finite difference method (FDM) and Pade'-variational iteration method (Pade'- VIM) are successfully implemented for solving the nonlinear fractional Riccati differential equation. The fractional derivative is described in the Caputo sense. The existence and the uniqueness of the proposed problem are given. The resulting nonlinear system of algebraic equations from FDM is solved by using Newton iteration method; moreover the condition of convergence is verified. The convergence's domain of the solution is improved and enlarged by Pade'-VIM technique. The results obtained by using FDM is compared with Pade'-VIM. It should be noted that the Pade'-VIM is preferable because …

Solution Of Fuzzy System Of Linear Equations With Polynomial Parametric Form, Diptiranjan Behera, S. Chakraverty

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper proposed two new and simple solution methods to solve a fuzzy system of linear equations having fuzzy coefficients and crisp variables using a polynomial parametric form of fuzzy numbers. Related theorems are stated and proved. The proposed methods are used to solve example problems. The results obtained are also compared with the known solutions and are found to be in good agreement.

Safe: Simulation Automation Framework For Experiments, Luiz Felipe Perrone, Bryan C. Ward, Christopher S. Main Dec 2012

Safe: Simulation Automation Framework For Experiments, Luiz Felipe Perrone, Bryan C. Ward, Christopher S. Main

Faculty Journal Articles

The workflow of a network simulation study requires adherence to best practices in methodology so that results are credible and reproducible by third parties. The opportunities for one to introduce errors start at model description and permeate the process through to the reporting of results. The literature indicates that even publications in respected venues include inadvertent mistakes and poor application of methodology. When experts are liable to fail, it is unreasonable to expect that students would fare any better. This paper presents a system designed to provide guidance for inexperienced users of the popular ns-3 network simulator. SAFE automates the …

Managing Employees’ Use Of Mobile Technologies To Minimize Work-Life Balance Impacts, Suprateek Sarker, Saonee Sarker, Xiao Xiao, Manju Ahuja

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Organizations recognize that employees’ use of mobile technologies improves productivity. Yet there is concern that mobile usage can impact employees’ work-life balance (WLB). In this article, we report on the undesirable impacts on WLB and offer a framework and a set of strategies for managing WLB. We propose that there is a continuum of WLB perceptions, with some seeing work and personal life as separate domains, others viewing work as overlapping with personal life and yet others perceiving the two domains as integrated

Securing A Wireless Networked Control System Using Information Fusion, Brijesh Kashyap Chejerla, Sanjay Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Security of a wireless sensor network practically governs its usability in several applications. Especially, in applications like Industrial control systems which use NCS and SCADA systems, the security affects the stability of the system. We propose to use an information fusion scheme which allows us to profile the different attacks in wireless sensor networks and study their effects on the control systems stability and feedback. We make use of the Bayesian Networks to obtain hypotheses as outputs which form the decisions. These decisions are made based on the feature extraction and estimation process of the entire information fusion scheme. This …

Online Optimal Control Of Affine Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems With Unknown Internal Dynamics By Using Time-Based Policy Update, Travis Dierks, Sarangapani Jagannathan Dec 2012

Online Optimal Control Of Affine Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems With Unknown Internal Dynamics By Using Time-Based Policy Update, Travis Dierks, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation is solved forward-in-time for the optimal control of a class of general affine nonlinear discrete-time systems without using value and policy iterations. the proposed approach, referred to as adaptive dynamic programming, uses two neural networks (NNs), to solve the infinite horizon optimal regulation control of affine nonlinear discrete-time systems in the presence of unknown internal dynamics and a known control coefficient matrix. One NN approximates the cost function and is referred to as the critic NN, while the second NN generates the control input and is referred to as the action NN. the cost …

A Cross Layer Approach To The Novel Distributed Scheduling Protocol And Event-Triggered Controller Design For Cyber Physical Systems, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan Dec 2012

A Cross Layer Approach To The Novel Distributed Scheduling Protocol And Event-Triggered Controller Design For Cyber Physical Systems, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In Cyber Physical Systems (CPS), multiple real-time dynamic systems are connected to their corresponding controllers through a shared communication network in contrast with a dedicated line. for such CPS, the existing scheduling schemes for instance Centralized or Distributed Scheduling schemes are unsuitable since the behavior of real-time dynamic systems is ignored during the network protocol design. Therefore, in this paper, a novel distributed scheduling protocol design via cross-layer approach is proposed to optimize the performance of CPS by maximizing the utility function which is generated by using the information collected from both the application and network layers. Subsequently, a novel …

Video Compressive Sensing With 3-D Wavelet And 3-D Noiselet, Dao Lam, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new compressive video sampling method is investigated. as opposed to other video sampling methods for which processing is conducted on a single-frame basis, this method is applied on multiple frames of the video stream. by exploiting the extension of Wavelet to 3-D with the support of Noiselet 3-D and combining it with fast reconstruction algorithms, this framework produces successful results quickly while maintaining the quality of the video stream. Despite its simplicity, this new approach outperforms other sophisticated methods. © 2012 IEEE.

Domain Independent Ordering Of Narrative Events, Lucian T. Silcox Dec 2012

Domain Independent Ordering Of Narrative Events, Lucian T. Silcox

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

A key aspect towards gaining a rich understanding of a text is the ability to order the events that occur in the narrative. For us, as readers, this is a simple task, accomplished without effort by recognizing subtle contextual and linguistic clues. For natural language systems, however, the task is considerably more difficult. It is the intent of this research to automate the process of annotating and ordering temporal events in a narrative, and to measure the success of techniques trained on news articles when applied to less sequentially-structured texts. We build on the earlier work of Mani et al …

A Comparison Of Display Techniques For Large Graphs, Ana Rocio Pena

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Visualizing information focuses on the display of data in order to provide the user a representation that provides understanding of the data. Information visualization systems typically couple interaction mechanisms for providing overviews of the data with more detailed information through a zooming interface. This thesis compares three different techniques for displaying graphs provided by the prefuse visualization system: force-directed node positioning, radial node positioning, and a tree view of graphs. Using a large, real world data set from the South Texas College’s Distance Education department, the three visualization techniques are compared for a set of tasks that users routinely need …

A Time Series Analysis Method Using Hidden Variables For Gene Network Reconstruction, Xi Wu Dec 2012

A Time Series Analysis Method Using Hidden Variables For Gene Network Reconstruction, Xi Wu

Dissertations

The DNA microarray technology can be applied to obtain time series data which contains thousands of genes and tens of time points. When confront the great amount of data points a fast and effective method must be constructed to extract useful information. The assumption that the interactions between genes are static in the time series data is made. After made the assumption how to reconstruct those interactions becomes a difficulty problem. Since the underlying interactions between genes are complicated, which involve transcription, translation and protein-protein interaction, to construct a model from physicochemistry is almost impossible/effortless. The popular methods constructed from …

Reification: A Process To Configure Java Realtime Processors, John Huddleston Heath Dec 2012

Reification: A Process To Configure Java Realtime Processors, John Huddleston Heath

Dissertations

Real-time systems require stringent requirements both on the processor and the software application. The primary concern is speed and the predictability of execution times. In all real-time applications the developer must identify and calculate the worst case execution times (WCET) of their software. In almost all cases the processor design complexity impacts the analysis when calculating the WCET. Design features which impact this analysis include cache and instruction pipelining. With both cache and pipelining the time taken for a particular instruction can vary depending on cache and pipeline contents. When calculating the WCET the developer must ignore the speed advantages …

Data Mining Of Pancreatic Cancer Protein Databases, Peter Revesz, Christopher Assi Dec 2012

Data Mining Of Pancreatic Cancer Protein Databases, Peter Revesz, Christopher Assi

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Data mining of protein databases poses special challenges because many protein databases are non- relational whereas most data mining and machine learning algorithms assume the input data to be a type of rela- tional database that is also representable as an ARFF file. We developed a method to restructure protein databases so that they become amenable for various data mining and machine learning tools. Our restructuring method en- abled us to apply both decision tree and support vector machine classifiers to a pancreatic protein database. The SVM classifier that used both GO term and PFAM families to characterize proteins gave …

Lagrangian Relaxation For Large-Scale Multi-Agent Planning, Geoffrey J. Gordon, Pradeep Varakantham, William Yeoh, Hoong Chuin Lau, Ajay S. Aravamudhan, Shih-Fen Cheng Dec 2012

Lagrangian Relaxation For Large-Scale Multi-Agent Planning, Geoffrey J. Gordon, Pradeep Varakantham, William Yeoh, Hoong Chuin Lau, Ajay S. Aravamudhan, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multi-agent planning is a well-studied problem with various applications including disaster rescue, urban transportation and logistics, both for autonomous agents and for decision support to humans. Due to computational constraints, existing research typically focuses on one of two scenarios: unstructured domains with many agents where we are content with heuristic solutions, or domains with small numbers of agents or special structure where we can provide provably near-optimal solutions. By contrast, in this paper, we focus on providing provably near-optimal solutions for domains with large numbers of agents, by exploiting a common domain-general property: if individual agents each have limited influence …

Space Plug-And-Play Architecture Networking: A Self-Configuring Heterogeneous Network Architecture, Jacob Holt Christensen Dec 2012

Space Plug-And-Play Architecture Networking: A Self-Configuring Heterogeneous Network Architecture, Jacob Holt Christensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In spacecraft engineering, the time and money involved in satellite construction is largely spent on design and integration of custom hardware and software. These efforts are duplicated for nearly every satellite with little to no reuse between spacecraft. There is a huge potential for cost savings in removing the duplication of work. However, there is a lack of standardization in the spaceflight community, causing soaring costs and delayed schedules as each component of a spacecraft is individually designed and custom built.

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has developed the Space Plug-and-Play Architecture (SPA) to address this problem. SPA provides …

Hardware-Software Co-Design, Acceleration And Prototyping Of Control Algorithms On Reconfigurable Platforms, Desta Kumsa Edosa Dec 2012

Hardware-Software Co-Design, Acceleration And Prototyping Of Control Algorithms On Reconfigurable Platforms, Desta Kumsa Edosa

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Differential equations play a significant role in many disciplines of science and engineering. Solving and implementing Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) and partial Differential Equations (PDEs) effectively are very essential as most complex dynamic systems are modeled based on these equations. High Performance Computing (HPC) methodologies are required to compute and implement complex and data intensive applications modeled by differential equations at higher speed. There are, however, some challenges and limitations in implementing dynamic system, modeled by non-linear ordinary differential equations, on digital hardware. Modeling an integrator involves data approximation which results in accuracy error if data values are not considered …

Rule-Based Precise Localization Services In Mobile Environments, Mohammed Elbes Dec 2012

Rule-Based Precise Localization Services In Mobile Environments, Mohammed Elbes

Dissertations

In recent years there has been great interest in the positioning of people and assets in indoor and outdoor environments. Many systems were constructed to accomplish this. The application of these systems depends on the environment and the precision required for localization. The Global Positioning System (GPS) cannot be used for a precise indoor localization due to the attenuation and scattering of the signals. For indoor environments, other technologies like Wireless LAN, laser, camera images and motion sensors are used in precise localization. GPS can be used in outdoor environments but if localization accuracy is a critical requirement, other technologies …

Congestion Avoidance Energy Efficient Mac Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Alexander Sundling Dec 2012

Congestion Avoidance Energy Efficient Mac Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Alexander Sundling

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Wireless Sensor Network (WSNs) are generally energy-constrained and resource-constrained. When multiple simultaneous events occur in densely deployed WSNs, nodes near the base station can become congested, decreasing the network performance. Additionally, multiple nodes may sense an event leading to spatially-correlated contention, further increasing congestion. In order to mitigate the effects of congestion near the base station, an energy-efficient Media Access Control (MAC) protocol that can handle multiple simultaneous events and spatially-correlated contention is needed. Energy efficiency is important and can be achieved using duty cycles but they could degrade the network performance in terms of latency. Existing protocols either provide …

Design And Optimization Of Four-Dimensional Cone-Beam Computed To Mography In Image-Guided Radiation Therapy, Moiz Ahmad Dec 2012

Design And Optimization Of Four-Dimensional Cone-Beam Computed To Mography In Image-Guided Radiation Therapy, Moiz Ahmad

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The influence of respiratory motion on patient anatomy poses a challenge to accurate radiation therapy, especially in lung cancer treatment. Modern radiation therapy planning uses models of tumor respiratory motion to account for target motion in targeting. The tumor motion model can be verified on a per-treatment session basis with four-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (4D-CBCT), which acquires an image set of the dynamic target throughout the respiratory cycle during the therapy session. 4D-CBCT is undersampled if the scan time is too short. However, short scan time is desirable in clinical practice to reduce patient setup time. This dissertation presents the …

An Efficient Image Segmentation Algorithm Using Bidirectional Mahalanobis Distance, Rahul Suresh Dec 2012

An Efficient Image Segmentation Algorithm Using Bidirectional Mahalanobis Distance, Rahul Suresh

All Theses

In this thesis, we present an efficient graph-based image-segmentation algorithm that improves upon the drawbacks of the minimum spanning tree based segmentation algorithm, namely leaks that occur due to the criterion used to merge regions, and the sensitivity of the output to the parameter k. To address these problems, we propose the use of bidirectional Mahalanobis distance, along with a Gaussian model for each region, and an intuitive normalized parameter τ that replaces k and works for all images without having to be changed. Furthermore, we propose an approximation to the algorithm that enables it to run efficiently in O(NlogN) …

Eliciting Usable Gestures For Multi-Display Environments, Teddy Seyed, Chris Burns, Mario Costa Sousa, Frank Maurer, Anthony Tang Dec 2012

Eliciting Usable Gestures For Multi-Display Environments, Teddy Seyed, Chris Burns, Mario Costa Sousa, Frank Maurer, Anthony Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multi-display environments (MDEs) have advanced rapidly in recent years, incorporating multi-touch tabletops, tablets, wall displays and even position tracking systems. Designers have proposed a variety of interesting gestures for use in an MDE, some of which involve a user moving their hands, arms, body or even a device itself. These gestures are often used as part of interactions to move data between the various components of an MDE, which is a longstanding research problem. But designers, not users, have created most of these gestures and concerns over implementation issues such as recognition may have influenced their design. We performed a …

Knowledge-Based Exploration For Reinforcement Learning In Self-Organizing Neural Networks, Teck-Hou Teng, Ah-Hwee Tan Dec 2012

Knowledge-Based Exploration For Reinforcement Learning In Self-Organizing Neural Networks, Teck-Hou Teng, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Exploration is necessary during reinforcement learning to discover new solutions in a given problem space. Most reinforcement learning systems, however, adopt a simple strategy, by randomly selecting an action among all the available actions. This paper proposes a novel exploration strategy, known as Knowledge-based Exploration, for guiding the exploration of a family of self-organizing neural networks in reinforcement learning. Specifically, exploration is directed towards unexplored and favorable action choices while steering away from those negative action choices that are likely to fail. This is achieved by using the learned knowledge of the agent to identify prior action choices leading to …

Volatile Memory Message Carving: A "Per Process Basis" Approach, Aisha Ibrahim Ali-Gombe Dec 2012

Volatile Memory Message Carving: A "Per Process Basis" Approach, Aisha Ibrahim Ali-Gombe

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The pace at which data and information transfer and storage has shifted from PCs to mobile devices is of great concern to the digital forensics community. Android is fast becoming the operating system of choice for these hand-held devices, hence the need to develop better forensic techniques for data recovery cannot be over-emphasized. This thesis analyzes the volatile memory for Motorola Android devices with a shift from traditional physical memory extraction to carving residues of data on a “per process basis”. Each Android application runs in a separate process within its own Dalvik Virtual Machine (JVM) instance, thus, the proposed …

Filesystems: Addressing The Last-Mile “Problem” In Services-Oriented/Cloud Computing, George K. Thiruvathukal, Joseph P. Kaylor, Konstantin Läufer

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We have designed and implemented RestFS, a software framework that provides a uniform, configurable connector layer for mapping remote web-based resources to local filesystem-based resources, recognizing the similarity between these two types of resources. Such mappings enable programmatic access to a resource, as well as composition of two or more resources, through the local operating system’s standard filesystem application programming interface (API), script-able file-based command-line utilities, and interprocess communication (IPC) mechanisms. The framework supports automatic and manual authentication.

As part of this talk, we demonstrate a new filesystem that interfaces to the SketchFab.com service to support 3D model visualization. For …
