Wireless Sensor Network For Wine Fermentation, Kerry Scharfglass, Andrew Lehmer Jun 2012

Wireless Sensor Network For Wine Fermentation, Kerry Scharfglass, Andrew Lehmer

Computer Engineering

This project implements an automated temperature monitoring system for wine fermentation which is affordable, easy to use, and scalable to typical small winery setups. To realize these requirements, we implemented the system as a wireless sensor network utilizing commercial off-the-shelf hardware. Temperature and system diagnostic information is communicated wirelessly in a peer-to-peer network topology such that all information flows toward an aggregating server. The server makes the temperature information available over the Internet via a web application and alerts the winemaker by email when the temperature has left acceptable bounds that the winemaker may configure. This project also involved materials …

An Evolutionary Search Paradigm That Learns With Past Experiences, Liang Feng, Yew-Soon Ong, Ivor Tsang, Ah-Hwee Tan Jun 2012

An Evolutionary Search Paradigm That Learns With Past Experiences, Liang Feng, Yew-Soon Ong, Ivor Tsang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A major drawback of evolutionary optimization approaches in the literature is the apparent lack of automated knowledge transfers and reuse across problems. Particularly, evolutionary optimization methods generally start a search from scratch or ground zero state, independent of how similar the given new problem of interest is to those optimized previously. In this paper, we present a study on the transfer of knowledge in the form of useful structured knowledge or latent patterns that are captured from previous experiences of problem-solving to enhance future evolutionary search. The essential contributions of our present study include the meme learning and meme selection …

More Of A Receiver Than A Giver: Why Do People Unfollow In Twitter?, Haewoon Kwak, Sue Moon, Wonjae Lee Jun 2012

More Of A Receiver Than A Giver: Why Do People Unfollow In Twitter?, Haewoon Kwak, Sue Moon, Wonjae Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a logistic regression model taking into ac- count two analytically different sets of factors–structure and action. The factors include individual, dyadic, and triadic properties between ego and alter whose tie breakup is under consideration. From the fitted model using a large-scale data, we discover 5 structural and 7 actional variables to have significant explanatory power for unfollow. One unique finding from our quantitative analysis is that people appreciate receiving acknowl- edgements from others even in virtually unilateral com- munication relationships and are less likely to unfollow them: people are more of a receiver than a giver.

Aligning Images In The Wild, Wen-Yan Lin, Linlin Liu, Yasuyuki Matsushita, Kok-Lim Low, Siying Liu Jun 2012

Aligning Images In The Wild, Wen-Yan Lin, Linlin Liu, Yasuyuki Matsushita, Kok-Lim Low, Siying Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Aligning image pairs with significant appearance change is a long standing computer vision challenge. Much of this problem stems from the local patch descriptors’ instability to appearance variation. In this paper we suggest this instability is due less to descriptor corruption and more the difficulty in utilizing local information to canonically define the orientation (scale and rotation) at which a patch’s descriptor should be computed. We address this issue by jointly estimating correspondence and relative patch orientation, within a hierarchical algorithm that utilizes a smoothly varying parameterization of geometric transformations. By collectively estimating the correspondence and orientation of all the …

Where Should The Bugs Be Fixed? More Accurate Information Retrieval-Based Bug Localization Based On Bug Reports, Jian Zhou, Hongyu Zhang, David Lo Jun 2012

Where Should The Bugs Be Fixed? More Accurate Information Retrieval-Based Bug Localization Based On Bug Reports, Jian Zhou, Hongyu Zhang, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

For a large and evolving software system, the project team could receive a large number of bug reports. Locating the source code files that need to be changed in order to fix the bugs is a challenging task. Once a bug report is received, it is desirable to automatically point out to the files that developers should change in order to fix the bug. In this paper, we propose BugLocator, an information retrieval based method for locating the relevant files for fixing a bug. BugLocator ranks all files based on the textual similarity between the initial bug report and the …

Using Rigidity Analysis To Probe Mutation-Induced Structural Changes In Proteins, Filip Jagodzinski, Jeanne Hardy, Ileana Streinu Jun 2012

Using Rigidity Analysis To Probe Mutation-Induced Structural Changes In Proteins, Filip Jagodzinski, Jeanne Hardy, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Predicting the effect of a single amino acid substitution on the stability of a protein structure is a fundamental task in macromolecular modeling. It has relevance to drug design and understanding of disease-causing protein variants. We present KINARI-Mutagen, a web server for performing in silico mutation experiments on protein structures from the Protein Data Bank. Our rigidity-theoretical approach permits fast evaluation of the effects of mutations that may not be easy to perform in vitro, because it is not always possible to express a protein with a specific amino acid substitution. We use KINARI-Mutagen to identify critical residues, and we …

Short Message Service (Sms) Command And Control (C2) Awareness In Android-Based Smartphones Using Kernel-Level Auditing, Robert J. Olipane Jun 2012

Short Message Service (Sms) Command And Control (C2) Awareness In Android-Based Smartphones Using Kernel-Level Auditing, Robert J. Olipane

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the emerging threat of botnets in the smartphone domain and focuses on the Android platform and botnets using short message service (SMS) as the command and control (C2) channel. With any botnet, C2 is the most important component contributing to its overall resilience, stealthiness, and effectiveness. This thesis develops a passive host-based approach for identifying covert SMS traffic and providing awareness to the user. Modifying the kernel and implementing this awareness mechanism is achieved by developing and inserting a loadable kernel module that logs all inbound SMS messages as they are sent from the baseband radio to …

Abortable Reader-Writer Locks Are No More Complex Than Abortable Mutex Locks, Zhiyu Liu Jun 2012

Abortable Reader-Writer Locks Are No More Complex Than Abortable Mutex Locks, Zhiyu Liu

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

When a process attempts to acquire a mutex lock, it may be forced to wait if another process currently holds the lock. In certain applications, such as real-time operating systems and databases, indefinite waiting can cause a process to miss an important deadline. Hence, there has been research on designing abortable mutual exclusion locks, and fairly efficient algorithms of O(log n) RMR complexity have been discovered (n denotes the number of processes for which the algorithm is designed). The abort feature is just as important for a reader-writer lock as it is for a mutual exclusion lock, but to the …

Prediction Of Topic Volume On Twitter, Yiye Ruan, Hemant Purohit, David Fuhry, Srinivasan Parthasarathy, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

We discuss an approach for predicting microscopic (individual) and macroscopic (collective) user behavioral patterns with respect to specific trending topics on Twitter. Going beyond previous efforts that have analyzed driving factors in whether and when a user will publish topic-relevant tweets, here we seek to predict the strength of content generation which allows more accurate understanding of Twitter users' behavior and more effective utilization of the online social network for diffusing information. Unlike traditional approaches, we consider multiple dimensions into one regression-based prediction framework covering network structure, user interaction, content characteristics and past activity. Experimental results on three large Twitter …

Gpu-Accelerated Point-Based Color Bleeding, Ryan Daniel Schmitt Jun 2012

Gpu-Accelerated Point-Based Color Bleeding, Ryan Daniel Schmitt

Master's Theses

Traditional global illumination lighting techniques like Radiosity and Monte Carlo sampling are computationally expensive. This has prompted the development of the Point-Based Color Bleeding (PBCB) algorithm by Pixar in order to approximate complex indirect illumination while meeting the demands of movie production; namely, reduced memory usage, surface shading independent run time, and faster renders than the aforementioned lighting techniques.

The PBCB algorithm works by discretizing a scene’s directly illuminated geometry into a point cloud (surfel) representation. When computing the indirect illumination at a point, the surfels are rasterized onto cube faces surrounding that point, and the constituent pixels are combined …

Suffix Trees For Document Retrieval, Ryan Reck Jun 2012

Suffix Trees For Document Retrieval, Ryan Reck

Master's Theses

This thesis presents a look at the suitability of Suffix Trees for full text indexing and retrieval. Typically suffix trees are built on a character level, where the tree records which characters follow each other character. By building suffix trees for documents based on words instead of characters, the resulting tree effectively indexes every word or sequence of words that occur in any of the documents. Ukkonnen's algorithm is adapted to build word-level suffix trees. But the primary focus is on developing Algorithms for searching the suffix tree for exact and approximate, or fuzzy, matches to arbitrary query strings. A …

Teaching Introductory Programming Concepts: A Comparison Of Scratch And Arduino, Anne Beug Jun 2012

Teaching Introductory Programming Concepts: A Comparison Of Scratch And Arduino, Anne Beug

Master's Theses

Computing has become an integral part of modern America. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that between 2008 and 2018, the United States will have 1.4 million job openings in computing fields [1]. Since the early 2000's (just after the "dot com bust"), the number of students enrolled in computing majors (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, etc.) dropped precipitously by over 50%, only starting to rise again in 2009 [2]. One way to rectify to this gap between demand and supply is to start training students in computational thinking during high school. While the Computer Science Advanced Placement AB test has …

Energy Aware Algorithms For Managing Wireless Sensor Networks, Abhishek Karpate Jun 2012

Energy Aware Algorithms For Managing Wireless Sensor Networks, Abhishek Karpate

Student Work

While the majority of the current Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) research has prioritized either the coverage of the monitored area or the energy efficiency of the network, it is clear that their relationship must be further studied in order to find optimal solutions that balance the two factors. Higher degrees of redundancy can be attained by increasing the number of active sensors monitoring a given area which results in better performance. However, this in turn increases the energy being consumed. In our research, we focus on attaining a solution that considers several optimization parameters such as the percentage of coverage, …

Identifying Core Components In Software Systems, Phillip Meyer Jun 2012

Identifying Core Components In Software Systems, Phillip Meyer

Student Work

As large software systems are highly complex, they can be difficult for a developer to understand. If a core subset of a software system could be extracted which contains the most important classes and connections of the larger system, studying this core would be useful for efficiently understanding the overall system. In this research we examine research into core/periphery structures in networks, primarily focusing on the use of k-core decomposition. The extracted dependencies of three open source Java software systems provide the inputs, with forty different versions of these systems analyzed in total. We derive inter-class dependencies from these releases …

Mixed-Initiative Strategies For Real-Time Scheduling Of Multiple Unmanned Vehicles, Andrew S. Clare, Jamie Macbeth, Mary L. Cummings Jun 2012

Mixed-Initiative Strategies For Real-Time Scheduling Of Multiple Unmanned Vehicles, Andrew S. Clare, Jamie Macbeth, Mary L. Cummings

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Advances in autonomy have made it possible to invert the typical operator-to-unmanned vehicle ratio so that a single operator can now control multiple heterogeneous Unmanned Vehicles (UVs). Real-time scheduling and task assignment for multiple UVs in uncertain environments will require the computational ability of optimization algorithms combined with the judgment and adaptability of human supervisors through mixed-initiative systems. The goal of this paper is to analyze the interactions between operators and scheduling algorithms in two human- in-the-loop multiple UV control experiments. The impact of real-time operator modifications to the objective function of an optimization algorithm for multi-UV scheduling is described. …

Involvement Of Microrna Families In Cancer, Stefan Wuchty, Dolores Arjona, Serdar Bozdag, Peter O. Bauer Jun 2012

Involvement Of Microrna Families In Cancer, Stefan Wuchty, Dolores Arjona, Serdar Bozdag, Peter O. Bauer

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Collecting representative sets of cancer microRNAs (miRs) from the literature we show that their corresponding families are enriched in sets of highly interacting miR families. Targeting cancer genes on a statistically significant level, such cancer miR families strongly intervene with signaling pathways that harbor numerous cancer genes. Clustering miR family-specific profiles of pathway intervention, we found that different miR families share similar interaction patterns. Resembling corresponding patterns of cancer miRs families, such interaction patterns may indicate a miR family’s potential role in cancer. As we find that the number of targeted cancer genes is a naı¨ve proxy for a cancer …

Adaptive Security-Aware Scheduling For Packet Switched Networks Using Real-Time Multi-Agent Systems, Ma'en Saleh Saleh Jun 2012

Adaptive Security-Aware Scheduling For Packet Switched Networks Using Real-Time Multi-Agent Systems, Ma'en Saleh Saleh

Dissertations

Conventional real-time scheduling algorithms are in care of timing constraints; they don’t pay any attention to enhance or optimize the real-time packet’s security performance. In this work, we propose an adaptive security-aware scheduling with congestion control mechanism for packet switching networks using real-time agentbased systems. The proposed system combines the functionality of real-time scheduling with the security service enhancement, where the real-time scheduling unit uses the differentiated-earliest-deadline-first (Diff-EDF) scheduler, while the security service enhancement scheme adopts a congestion control mechanism based on a resource estimation methodology.

The security service enhancement unit was designed based on two models: singlelayer and weighted …

Exerlink: Enabling Pervasive Social Exergames With Heterogeneous Exercise Devices, Taiwoo Park, Inseok Hwang, Uichin Lee, Sunghoon Ivan Lee, Chungkuk Yoo, Youngki Lee, Hyukjae Jang, Sungwon Peter Choe, Souneil Park, Junehwa Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We envision that diverse social exercising games, or exergames, will emerge, featuring much richer interactivity with immersive game play experiences. Further, the recent advances of mobile devices and wireless networking will make such social engagement more pervasive - people carry portable exergame devices (e.g., jump ropes) and interact with remote users anytime, anywhere. Towards this goal, we explore the potential of using heterogeneous exercise devices as game controllers for a multi-player social exergame; e.g., playing a boat paddling game with two remote exercisers (one with a jump rope, and the other with a treadmill). In this paper, we propose a …

Solving The Search For Suitable Code: An Initial Implementation, Kathryn T. Stolee, Sebastian Elbaum Jun 2012

Solving The Search For Suitable Code: An Initial Implementation, Kathryn T. Stolee, Sebastian Elbaum

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Searching for code is a common task among programmers, with the ultimate goal of finding and reusing code or getting ideas for implementation. While the process of searching for code - issuing a query and selecting a relevant match - is straightforward, several costs must be balanced, including the costs of specifying the query, examining the results to find desired code, and not finding a relevant result. For the popular syntactic searches the query cost is quite low, but the results are often vague or irrelevant, so the examination cost is high and matches may not be found. Semantic searches …

Semi-Supervised Hierarchical Clustering For Personalized Web Image Organization, Lei Meng, Ah-Hwee Tan Jun 2012

Semi-Supervised Hierarchical Clustering For Personalized Web Image Organization, Lei Meng, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing efforts on web image organization usually transform the task into surrounding text clustering. However, Current text clustering algorithms do not address the problem of insufficient statistical information for image representation and noisy tags which greatly decreases the clustering performance while increases the computational cost. In this paper, we propose a two-step semi-supervised hierarchical clustering algorithm, Personalized Hierarchical Theme-based Clustering (PHTC), for web image organization. In the first step, the Probabilistic Fusion ART (PF-ART) is proposed for grouping semantically similar images and simultaneously learning the probabilistic distribution of tag occurrence for mining the key tags/topics of clusters. In this way, …

In recent studies of mobile and pervasive …

When A Friend In Twitter Is A Friend In Life, Wei Xie, Cheng Li, Feida Zhu, Ee-Peng Lim, Xueqing Gong Jun 2012

When A Friend In Twitter Is A Friend In Life, Wei Xie, Cheng Li, Feida Zhu, Ee-Peng Lim, Xueqing Gong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Twitter is a fast-growing online social network service (SNS) where users can "follow" any other user to receive his or her mini-blogs which are called "tweets". In this paper, we study the problem of identifying a user's off-line real-life social community, which we call the user'sTwitter off-line community, purely from examining Twitter network structure. Based on observations from our user-verified Twitter data and results from previous works, we propose three principles about Twitter off-line communities. Incorporating these principles, we develop a novel algorithm to iteratively discover the Twitter off-line community based on a new way of measuring user closeness. According …

Constructing Simplicial Complexes Over Topological Spaces, Milka N. Doktorova Jun 2012

Constructing Simplicial Complexes Over Topological Spaces, Milka N. Doktorova

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The first step in topological data analysis is often the construction of a simplicial complex. This complex approximates the lost topology of a sampled point set. Current techniques often assume that the input is embedded in a metric -- often Euclidean -- space, and make significant use of the underlying geometry for efficient computation. Consequently, these techniques do not extend to non-Euclidean or non-metric spaces. In this thesis, we present an oracle-based framework for constructing simplicial complexes over arbitrary topological spaces. The framework consists of an oracle and an algorithm that builds the simplicial complex by making calls to the …

Self-Organizing Neural Networks For Learning Air Combat Maneuvers, Teck-Hou Teng, Ah-Hwee Tan Jun 2012

Self-Organizing Neural Networks For Learning Air Combat Maneuvers, Teck-Hou Teng, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper reports on an agent-oriented approach for the modeling of adaptive doctrine-equipped computer generated force (CGF) using a commercial-grade simulation platform known as CAE STRIVECGF. A self- organizing neural network is used for the adaptive CGF to learn and generalize knowledge in an online manner during the simulation. The challenge of defining the state space and action space and the lack of domain knowledge to initialize the adaptive CGF are addressed using the doctrine used to drive the non-adaptive CGF. The doctrine contains a set of specialized knowledge for conducting 1-v-1 dogfights. The hierarchical structure and symbol representation of …
